Mazda MAZDA6 owners have reported 4 problems related to gas recirculation valve (egr valve) (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Mazda MAZDA6 based on all problems reported for the MAZDA6.
Vehicle has a 3. 7l v6 duratec engine designed by Ford. I was entering the highway at about 55mph, check engine light went on, then vehicle shut off, and I lost both power and steering. Was able to get to side of the highway without crashing. Steam/smoke was coming out of the hood and the temp gauge was pinned at h. Dealership advised that coolant had gotten mixed with oil and engine was destroyed. Cost to repair - $7400 used $13k new engine. Told it was not due to any neglect or maintenance issue. It was a water pump failure. There is a design flaw in this engine. The water pump is integrated into the engine and timing chain. When the pump fails it damages the engine, allowing coolant to mix with the oil. Numerous Ford and Mazda owners have had this problem but because it usually happens at or after 100k miles the manufacturers do not report it. They will also do nothing to help the customer who is left with a huge repair bill or a totaled car. Please help me and other owners. I have research with the names of other owners who had the same problem with their Ford or Mazda.

The ac compressor clutch locked up and caused the belt to make loud screeching noises. Also, something burning could be smelled inside the engine and burnt rubber was flung around the engine compartment. Another issue: read about this a lot because I am experiencing it, the passenger-side dash is melting. Seems they used a cheap material and when it gets above 80 degrees outside the dash begins to melt. It is sticky, leaves a residue on your fingers, and produces an extreme glare. The ac went out while I was in the drive-through ordering food. The dash board has been melting since last summer and has not gotten any better. Stopped melting during the winter and began melting now that it's summer again.
Bought a 2003 Mazda 6 last year, my tachometer kept going crazy and the car would die out. I took it to good year, 3 codes came up. They changed the cam shaft sensor and the egr valve. That didn't fix the problem, good year took the parts out, put mine back in and told me to take it to a Mazda dealership. I took it to Mazda, they told me I had to change my pcm because it was shorting out, and my egr valve and that should take care of the problem. They quoted me 2k dollars for everything. I asked them how much they were charging for the parts, they told me 1100 for the pcm and 200 for the egr, the rest was labor. As the service advisor quoted me prices, I told her I can buy a pcm online for 145. She said, yes, you can do that, but we won't warranty the job because it's not our part. I told them are you sure that will take care of the problem? they said yes. I told them okay fine! constantly calling the dealership for 2 weeks asking when I was going to get my car back, they gave me a loaner. I had that for a week, so they had my car a total of 3 weeks. Finally I called again, I asked them what's going on with my car. They told me, I need a new engine. I was like what? what happened to 2k will take care of the problem? they said no, there's too much sludge in the engine, you need a new one. Upset, I'm already in for 2k and now they want me to spend another 5k for a new engine. Mind you, I was already hesitant because of the price of the pcm. Any way, service advisor tells me, I can buy a new/used engine online for 500 and have them change it. I told them that was the whole reason, I didn't buy the pcm online!I was told you wouldn't warranty it, now you want me to buy one online? I went to the dealership, picked up my car, still the same problem. I'm not the only one,see link . . . Read more...

There seems to be no one significant event that has lead up to the issues I am currently experiencing. The problem has gotten progressively worse with time over the last few months. It started with a minor stutter back in late July/early August. It worsened a few days after the computer was reflashed for the recall in early September. I'm not sure if that was a catalyst to this problem or not since it was stuttering before a little bit also. By late September the problem seemed to be worsening. By mid-October it was stuttering constantly when driving in stop and go traffic. The problem worsened with cool weather when the engine is cold. On nights below about 30 degrees, the car stutters and bucks severely for the first few minutes until the engine is warmed up. Acceleration is sometimes unpredictable during this time. So far, Mazda has replaced the mass air flow sensor and updated the ecu to the latest available as of November. Spark plugs were replaced prior to this per my request. Nothing seems to make an impact. It should also be noted that this problem (cold start) seems to worsen on rough/uneven roads. Gas type (93 or 94 and name brand) seems to make no noticeable impact.
