36 Other Fuel System problem of the 2006 Mercedes Benz E350

Failure Date: 11/03/2022

In June 2017, I received a letter from mercedes-benz of America informing me that the warranty of the fuel system in my vehicle is extended to 15 years. In that same year, I had my whole fuel tank replaced by an authorized Mercedes Benz dealer in san jose, California due to strong smell of fuel by the rear wheel well on the driver side of the car. The repair was fully cover by mb-America under this extended warranty. On November 3, 2022, I experienced the same fuel smell from the same place of the car (I. E. , driver side rear wheel well) and was told that the repair will not be cover at all, even though the fuel system in my car is only 5 years old. I am writing to suggest that you impose a 15 years warranty on the fuel leak replacement parts. Mb needs to stand behind their product if it was their oem parts and done by their authorized dealer. In my case the new fuel smell was due to a cracked fuel pump assembly (part # 211 470 60 94) which was found in the brand new fuel tank installed in my car in 2017. My car is now repaired at a local shop at a fraction of the cost that mb-san jose would have charged me. My hope is for you to help future similar customers who will experience similar issue avoiding this unjust expense. Thank you very much, [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

Failure Date: 11/01/2022

On my way to work lady Tuesday 11/1/22 just a few blocks from my at&t office I started smelling fuel. I thought it was an lad car next to me. Looking at the rear mirror I noticed a line of fuel following me. By the time I pulled a side and shut down the vehicle I lost the full tank. The vehicle was towed and is still at Mercedes Benz of plano, plano, TX. The tech said the orings had gone bad and the hose deteriorated. . Read more...

38 Other Fuel System problem of the 2007 Mercedes Benz E350

Failure Date: 09/19/2022

Fuel tank fuel leak, NHTSA action number ea13003 I purchased a 2007 mercedes e class used a few months ago, and recently I noticed a fuel leak, strong fuel smell outside of vehicle when fuel tank is filled higher. More fuel means more fuel odor. Upon research, it seems like there was a warranty extension for 15 years, and with my luck, warranty extension ran out just after I bought the car but before I noticed the problem. As fuel is a safety issue and can easily ignite, and also affects emissions, I feel like the remedy should not just be a 15 year warranty extension, but longer as cars are staying on the road longer and longer. I'm sure I'm not the only one with this issue out of warranty extension period.

40 Other Fuel System problem of the 2012 Mercedes Benz E350

Failure Date: 08/20/2022

The incident was not the vehicle persa but passengers riding in back seat experienced nausea and headaches. Found gas fumes emitting from vehicle. As time progressed fumes got worse and fuel mileage performance worsened. Gas consumption was extremely bad. Car was taken in for oil change and absolutely no gas leaks were found and technician showed me the under carriage of car. Nothing showing on the obd. Afraid car will catch fire. Not driving as of today.

41 Other Fuel System problem of the 2012 Mercedes Benz E350

Failure Date: 08/01/2022

I smell gas all the time inside and outside the car.

42 Other Fuel System problem of the 2012 Mercedes Benz E350

Failure Date: 08/01/2022

There is a strong smell of gas inside and outside of the vehicle. Gas is being consumed at a faster rate than usual. No warning lights have come on inside the care. The smell is strong and is affecting all passengers (headaches, nausea) including children and toddlers.

43 Other Fuel System problem of the 2014 Mercedes Benz E350

Failure Date: 07/31/2022

Car was being driven at secondary road speed (~40mph). Engine suddenly began to spudder and misfire terribly. Came to a stop light engine was idled roughly. Accelerated from stop, when check engine light turned on. Car went into limp mode at a very dangerous rail road crossing and left turn intersection. Without acceleration, family was in danger of being hit by train and incoming traffic. Took car to mercedes mechanic. Faulty parts were the camshaft position solenoid valve, ignition cool. Short circuit in one part caused blown ignition fuse and cascading mechanical problems and safety risks. Repair cost so far is $1,100. Concern is the placement of the faulty part. It is exposed to high heat in the motor compartment and poses a fire hazard as well as a personal injury hazard to the occupants and driver.

44 Other Fuel System problem of the 2012 Mercedes Benz E350

Failure Date: 07/22/2022

While driving the vehicle, noticed a smell of fuel inside the car. Parked the car in my garage and the next morning, noted a heavy smell of fuel in the garage. After some research, discovered a recall on the fuel filters for 2011-2012 mercedes E350 for the fuel fillers. Took car to dealership and they stated the recall was not associated with my VIN despite my car being the exacted year, make, and model for the recall. I removed the back seat to view the fuel filter and saw fuel puddled inside the car, on top of the fuel filter, under the left side of the rear seat. The risk is twofold. Spark ignited the gas in the vehicle out a spiral ignited the fumes smelled in my garage.

45 Other Fuel System problem of the 2007 Mercedes Benz E350

Failure Date: 07/13/2022

Due to the odor of gasoline both inside and outside my car I brought my car to the local mercedes’ dealership. Upon inspection they found a small crack in my fuel tank which allowed gasoline to leak into another compartment. The dealer stated they would not be able to replace fuel pump without replacing the gasoline because of the “danger and risk of fire”. I believe that the leakage of gasoline and the fumes associated inhaled presents a very real danger, and risk to health. Upon research I found that this is a major issue that has been addressed by your department. After a 3 year investigation this investigation was closed due to the extension of the manufactures warranty to 15 years. My car is 8 months out of the extended warranty. When speaking to mercedes’ benz hotline, the representative stated receiving several phone calls recently with reports of the same issue. I appreciate your attention to this matter. I am hoping this case with be reopened, and the manufacturer held responsible for replacing faulty fuel tanks.

46 Other Fuel System problem of the 2014 Mercedes Benz E350

Failure Date: 06/22/2022

Fuel smell really strong & a huge fuel leak started on 6/20/2022. The fuel smell was so strong inside the the car I couldn't stay in it. It started leaking before I fueled up my vehicle. Wen to the back of the car and notice a huge puddle of gas. I didn't know anything about this recall until today. I've owed the car for three years. I hope that mercedes will fix this issue. Very dangerous.

47 Other Fuel System problem of the 2014 Mercedes Benz E350

Failure Date: 06/17/2022

Strong gas odor inside cabin, whenever gas tank is full I can smell gas for extended time period. May relate to faulty gas line under the back seat.

48 Other Fuel System problem of the 2010 Mercedes Benz E350

Failure Date: 06/10/2022

Very strong exterior exhaust odor, like gasoline, consistent and always prevalent but more so when fuel is at half or above. Afraid may spark if near open flame.

49 Other Fuel System problem of the 2011 Mercedes Benz E350

Failure Date: 05/03/2022

While filling the gas tank, gas continued to pour from the pump, even though the tank was full. Usually the pump automatically stops dispensing gas when the tank is full. Gas splashed all over my car and myself. Also, my car often smells like gas after filling up the tank. It seems dangerous to have gas fumes inside of my car. I feel like a rolling bomb driving after a fill up. What’s going on?.

50 Other Fuel System problem of the 2012 Mercedes Benz E350

Failure Date: 05/02/2022

Fuel leaking from rear passanger side tire area. Took vehicle to dealer. Dealer identified faulty fuel tank as source of fuel. This problem has been reported in other mercedes classes, including a manufacturers recall. My vehicle is 10 years old with only 71,000 miles. Dealer wants over $7,500 to repair. This issue has occured in other mercedes classes. This is a safety issue as driving with a leaking fiel tank can cause a fire and explosion. Please expedite this issue. Thanks.

51 Other Fuel System problem of the 2008 Mercedes Benz E350

Failure Date: 05/01/2022

My car has smelled like gas for the past few years. Also it has not past inspection for the past 2 years. Mercedes said it was due to a defective intake manifold. Paid to replace the intake manifold and mercedes said 2 new codes appeared. Now the gas tank, fuel pumps, brackets and hoses need to be replaced at a cost of of over 3500. The fuel pumps were replaced in 2014. Not sure why I continue to have problems with fuel pumps and now gas tank. Was informed this year after replacing the intake manifold that there was an extended warranty that concluded December 2022. I think mercedes should resolve this as other vehicles had this same safety issue.

52 Other Fuel System problem of the 2008 Mercedes Benz E350

Failure Date: 05/01/2022

Very strong gas smell both inside and outside of the car with check engine light on. This happened in may of 2022. Could not park the car inside the garage. Contacted mbusa, they said there is an extended warranty for this vehicle for this problem, advised me to take it to mercedes dealer. I took the car to the dealer. They checked it out and said it is not covered under the extended warranty because it has passed the mileage ceiling for pzev which I do not know what pzev is. I checked the NHTSA website, it says 15 years unlimited miles. I had no other choice but to fix the car at the dealer and pay for the cost. A few months later mbusa sent me a letter telling me although it has passed the mileage I might be eligible for a refund and wanted me to file a claim at the dealership. I did and after over two months the dealer again told me it is not covered. I paid about $1100 for the repair and told mbusa that the dealer does not honor what the mbusa letter says. Now even mbusa does not honor what they wrote me in their own letter. They say if my car was non pzev it would have been covered? how was it my fault to have a pzev vehicle? why did mercedes had pzev and non pzev? how is it the customer fault. Both vehicles have the same issue but why one is covered and the other is not? please you be the judge.

53 Other Fuel System problem of the 2007 Mercedes Benz E350

Failure Date: 04/22/2022

The component/s that have failed are (reputedly) the fuel system resulting in significant fuel fumes permeating into the cabin of the vehicle as well as being very evident around the rear outside of the vehicle. This seems to be more obvious after the car has been filled with fuel. Having fuel fumes leaking into the cabin of the car should be self evident as a risk to anyone travelling in the vehicle, especially in the rear seats. The fumes eminating from the car, externally, are a potential fire hazard should anyone walk by with a cigarette or naked flame. This is an on going problem well known to Mercedes Benz and one that should have been the subject of immediate recalls by mb and not subject to a miledge, time frame or VIN number. Why should I, or anyone, have to foot a fairly significant bill, for fixing a manufacturing fault just because the previous owners didn't get the problem fixed and I purchased the vehicle after some 15 year warrenty time frame? this issue could result in someones death if mercedes is not forced to remedy it and by remedy it I mean for all 2007 E350's to be recalled unconditionally.

54 Other Fuel System problem of the 2007 Mercedes Benz E350

Failure Date: 04/01/2022

Vehicle fuel system known component issue, fuel pump failure, intermittent. Driving vehicle can lose power at speed, causing potential loss of control as hydraulic assist to steering and braking fails with engine. This known issue has intermittently cause our car to fail to start, or fail in operation. This was a known issue, the manufacturer was allowed to avoid a recall by extending the warranty for this component (fuel pump in fuel tank assembly) to 15 years. Our car started showing this around that time (3 months ago, when extended warranty expired), however we were not then aware of said warranty. Now that we've been two months of diagnosis and discussions with mbusa customer care, they are not willing to replace the known failure point as warranty expired 3 months ago. This should have been a recall from the beginning, and now we, and many others to come, will have the value and usefulness of our vehicles reduced or eliminated. Those not aware of the potential failure of this very expensive part, will be at risk every time they operate their cars at speed on the public highways. Nhtsa should never have allowed this warranty extension scheme to substitute for a recall. There is no way to predict failure, and entire fuel tank assembly replacement is <$4,000. Fuel pump is not individually accessible or available for replacement, only entire tank assembly in these pzev vehicles is available. Mercedes-benz is shirking responsibility here, and flipping it over to the dealerships and consumers.

55 Other Fuel System problem of the 2009 Mercedes Benz E350

Failure Date: 03/24/2022

This vehicle has a very profound strong gas smell inside and out of the car. Upon further research, it has been notably stated that this particular vehicle model from years 2003-2009 had the same common issue that when refueling and topping off at full tank capacity, there is a fuel leakage seeping from the top of the gas tank which sits underneath of the back passenger seat. Apparently there is a health hazard recall listed upon this vehicle for this issue but when I called my local Mercedes Benz dealer they said that there was no recall with this issue and refused to acknowledge the problem. But in fact there are many videos of evidence online illustrating and showing other same vehicle owners addressing the fuel tank leakage from within underneath the back passenger seat, and there is also many written testimonials cases stating the existance of the same issue. I really do hope this issue gets addressed ASAP for which I do fear for my family's safety and mine. Thank you in advance for your time!.

56 Other Fuel System problem of the 2012 Mercedes Benz E350

Failure Date: 02/04/2022

I sent NHTSA a report earlier -#485386-- a mercedes recall=#12v557000- for this vehicle was issued -- on cars manufactured from 4/18/11 to 7/12/11. My auto was manufactured on 7/11. There is no exact date listed. The past few weeks I did smell gas outside of the car. I spoke to the dealer who told me it was not a recalled car. I went ahead and went to a repair mercedes shop to investigated the problem and found that the gas filter was leaking as indicated in the recall. Mercedes needs to expand the recall dates since it is obvious the dates are incorrect. I went ahead and took pictures of the leak and sent it to mercedes customer service. Again response from them was the car was not on the recall. I also want mercedes to pay me $478. 70 for the repair. Pictures of the filter/leak was also sent to them and you.

57 Other Fuel System problem of the 2012 Mercedes Benz E350

Failure Date: 02/02/2022

I noticed the strong smell of fuel around the rear of the car especially around the back. Upon inspection I noticed that the corner of the tank on the driver's side was wet with fuel. I took it to my mechanic who on inspecting the car reported that the pump outlet on the driver's side pump (which is accessed from the interior under the back seat) was spraying fuel up against the underside of the car against the rear seat and also noticed that the second pump on the passenger side on top of the tank was also seeping fuel. To have fuel leaking anywhere is dangerous, but to have it happening under the rear seat where my children sit is extremely dangerous. I checked for a recall for this problem with mercedes but didn't find one on their site. I called them at their corporate hq and they claimed not having a complaint like this before and didn't want to accept any responsibility for the faulty part/s. This is in need of immediate attention by Mercedes Benz before someone loses their lives because of mb ignoring this serious problem. Sean hovenden. . . Phone 850-226-1080 email sean@epiflorida. Com car fills with strong fuel vapors with raw fuel collecting on top of fuel pump many more reports for same problem I found online that mercedes would not react to, here is a typical one. . . Other fuel system pump problem of the 2012 Mercedes Benz E350 date: 06/01/2020 1) my vehicle is emitting a very strong fuel smell and possible leak coming from the fuel pump. This is located under the rear seat, which had a recall. I believe that the item is faulty and should replace once again. I reached out to the dealership and to mb corp; but they do not want to take responsibility for their faulty design and product. The vehicle is not safe to drive with the strong vapors, which are dangerous to health. Also, I am forced to leave the vehicle outside of the garage because of my fear that this will cause a fire or explosion, resulting in massive house destruction and possible death.

59 Other Fuel System problem of the 2006 Mercedes Benz E350

Failure Date: 12/07/2021

Noticed strong gasoline odor in left rear wheel well after filling the vehicle with fuel. Since the vehicle had just been repaired for an unrelated issue at a local mercedes dealer, I took it back to them for troubleshooting. They diagnosed the problem as a leak at the seal on the fuel pump in the tank. I researched this issue and found it is a recurring problem for which mercedes had offered a warranty extension of 15 years. This extension expired for my vehicle in July 2020. Cost to repair was $3,256 as after a 10% discount. I was not informed of this issue or the extended warranty despite having the vehicle serviced at mercedes dealers multiple times since purchasing it in 2008.

60 Other Fuel System problem of the 2011 Mercedes Benz E350

Failure Date: 11/05/2021

My vehicle developed a raw fuel smell inside and outside the vehicle. Also the check engine light came on. The problem was resolved by the dealer after some time under pzev warranty. What I am concerned with is why was this not a recall as the vehicle fuel vapors could of caused a fire in our garage or while we were operating it. Please note there was raw gas on the outside of the fuel tank.

61 Other Fuel System problem of the 2009 Mercedes Benz E350

Failure Date: 10/07/2021

I’m smelling gas fumes inside and outside of the car. I heard there was a 15 yr warranty on e class with this issue.

62 Other Fuel System problem of the 2006 Mercedes Benz E350

Failure Date: 10/04/2021

The contact owns a mercedes-benz E350. The owner experienced this failure about a month ago. The vehicle was parked in the driveway and the contact noticed gas is leaking continuously in his driveway. The vehicle fills up with gasoline on the driver's side and goes into the back passenger's seat on the driver's side. The believes the extended warranty agreement between NHTSA and mercedes-benz is a safety hazard regarding the gas leak failure. The contact talked to the manufacturer and local dealer regarding the failure and waiting for a response from them both. The failure has not been officially diagnosed yet. The approximate mileage is 184,000. 2006mercedes-benz E350w VIN: wdbuf56j06a847910 recall data refreshed on Feb 17,2022 0 unrepaired recalls associated with this VIN.

63 Other Fuel System problem of the 2014 Mercedes Benz E350

Failure Date: 09/09/2021

Severe gasoline leak smell inside and outside the vehicle. Smell is so bad as to make it impossible to stand next to the vehicle without gasping for air and watering eyes. Due to a fire hazard situation, car can not be parked inside the garage as there is a gas water heater installed in the vicinity. Fuel leak in the feed system has been a known problem in mercedes vehicles in the past. A recall was even issued on E350, 2014 model (recall # 15v792000). However, my vehicle was excluded from the recall on account of mfg. Date not matching with the recall notice. But here we are same problem showing up in the vehicle even after so called fuel leak probe was closed. Took it to the dealer for diagnosis and repair was quoted to be $2297. That's an outrageous amount of money to repair a problem which should not have happened as part of regular wear and tear and is most certainly a fire-hazard and safety issue. My wife and kids ride in this vehicle several times a day and currently I can't let them in this car due to the fear of fire. I would kindly request you to reopen the fuel leak matter with mercedes and look into the matter while I seek a reimbursement of the repair cost from mercedes corporate.

64 Other Fuel System problem of the 2006 Mercedes Benz E350

Failure Date: 07/14/2021

Leaking fuel tank and gaskets. A strong smell of fuel internally in the vehicle and externally with a full tank of fuel. Mercedes benz warrantee extension pe#12001 "covered fuel tank components. " Mercedes Benz denied claim because of pzev vs non-pzev type of vehicle. Both vehicles pzev and non-pzev, both use the same plastic gas tank, sending units, and fuel pump in their respective vehicles. How did NHTSA agree to cover non-pzev vehicles only.

65 Other Fuel System problem of the 2014 Mercedes Benz E350

Failure Date: 06/30/2021

Very strong gas smell enters the cabin and surrounding exterior of the car after fill up. Seems to be a very common problem with this model and follows the same issues with previous years that were filed with the NHTSA and ultimately needed to be repaired by mb. The problem appears to be with the components of the fuel tank immediately under the rear seat. I am at the point where this has become a very dangerous hazard that consumers should know that the manufacturer should address and that consumers should not have to pay for repairs.

66 Other Fuel System problem of the 2013 Mercedes Benz E350

Failure Date: 05/09/2021

A summary of the may 9, 2021, event follows: 6:30 a. M: I woke up, put on gym clothes and shoes and drove to gym (1 mile from home). 7:01:40 a. M. Turned into the gym parking lot and slowly inched into a parking space. (my mercedes rides low in the front so I pull in slowly so the block will not scrape my bumper). 7:02:00 a. M. As I pull slowly into the parking space the car stalls and the engine begins revving very loud. I firmly press my right foot (foot was already on the brake as I was inching into the space) on the brake because the car is still making that revving sound. 7:02:15 a. M. The car is at a complete stop for some time. The engine begins revving even louder and surges forward (foot was still on the brake) four feet. The car hits the brick gym building and comes to a standstill. I turn off the engine and sit there stunned. ( a witness signed a statement and said "car was at a complete stop for some time. . . Thought driver would open her door and get out but then the car suddenly surged forward and hit the building"). After getting out of my car and inspecting the wrecked car, I notice the gas cap is open and I shut it. The police show up, and say "no police report" will be made. I have some injuries (concussion, bruises over full torso and legs) but I treat patients with tbis so self-diagnosed and treated my injuries without seeking additional medical attention. On may 9, 2021, I call csaa and report the accident. After several conversations with csaa claims advisor karl arnold, it appears the car frame is damaged, and repair costs exceed value of car. The building had no damage. I then attempted to access relevant data on the edr and was misled by the mercedes fairfield dealership, service unit. I was told by josh “the data is irretrievable, and you can’t get it”. I asked why would congress pass the edr in to law making edrs mandatory and data belongs to owner, if it is not retrievable? he had no answer. I smell gas in the garage after I fill up my vehicle. I do not over-fill the tank, I remove the gas filler nozzle when it turns off automatically. I feel this is an unsafe condition. I have not yet taken the vehicle to a dealer to investigate this problem. According to my research, this vehicle model has a history of this same complaint in earlier models and was repaired by the dealers no charge through model years 2009. The condition has obviously not been remedied after this defect was discovered.

70 Other Fuel System problem of the 2012 Mercedes Benz E350

Failure Date: 03/26/2021

My 2012 mercedes E350 has oil contamination of the wiring harness. The oil has also damaged other components in the engine compartment including oxygen sensors; probes and ecu(computer) this is very expensive damage. Mercedes-benz had had recall for this problem in the past but the recall did not extend to the 2012 model year. They need to do another recall for this ongoing problem. This is a major safety hazard, as the car could stall in traffic without warning.
