My vehicle's power steering failed due to a defunct torque sensor which should have been replaced by the previous recall. The power steering became defective while I was driving on a highway, and completely failed a short time thereafter while stopped. After I was notified of the previous recall in 2014, I took my vehicle to a Ford service shop; however, Ford apparently did not fix the underlying issue in my vehicle (malfunctioned torque sensor). There was no warning or notice given that this issue may arise in the future after having the alleged recall "fixed". I also was given no notice at any time that the power steering was going to fail completely.

While attempting to accelerate at 1 mph, the power steering assist fault indicator illuminated and the steering wheel became extremely difficult to turn. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that a sensor in the power steering failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact spoke to the dealer (gorno Ford 22025 allen rd, woodhaven, mi 48183) who stated that there was no open recall on the vehicle, and the contact would have to pay a diagnostic fee. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 116,000.

My car was recalled once for power steering according to my car's history Ford updated the computer system. However for the last six months my power steering keeps failing. I never know when I start the car if I will have power steering. Ford states no recall and will not fix the problem for free. What I read states that if the computer update does not work than a replacement of the steering must be done. This is a major safety issue. I have had to cancel doctor's appointments because that day I did not have power steering and can not parallel park. Please I need help with this. I understand that some other owners are having the same issue. Must I get into an accident because of lack of power steering before Ford corrects this problem once and for all. Please help I am desperate.

My teenage son was driving this vehicle his 2008 Mercury Mariner when the steering wheel froze without warning. It took all my strength but he manage to get to his grandparents and pulled over. His dashboard indicated it was "power steering assist fail. " the power steering failure was the #1 trending complaint on carcomplaints. Com in April, 2014 and is a known problem. Prior to contacting the dealership, I research it and found that Ford issued safety recalls for approximately 1. 1 million cars in north America. The first recall affected escape and Mercury from 2008-2011. However, I did not receive a recall notice and when the dealership was called we were informed the recall had expired. Safety recalls should not expired, especially for known issues like this.

Started vehicle. Dash message read "power steering assist failure. " no power steering. After doing online research (it didn't take long to find similar to identical complaints), I found that there was a steering related recall pertaining to the vehicle (7/2014). Took vehicle to Lincoln-Mercury dealership from which it was purchased new. The dealer service department informed me that the recall work had been done the last time we had our oil changed over the summer, and that the recall had been "closed out". . . . We weren't informed of either the fact that there was a recall in the first place, or that they had "taken care" of it. The recall work was apparently to "reprogram" some "module" to simply make the driver aware that something has gone awry with the power steering (no kidding). The ultimate diagnosis: the vehicle needs a new steering column at a cost of nearly $1,300. 00 as the "torque sensor" has failed. It is apparent to me and many others that the recall had nothing to do with repair of the failed component, which is not such an "unlikely event". . . . Also, the failure of the component is not a matter of improper maintenance as could be the case with typical power steering systems. . . It just fails. The failure of the component(s) is however a pretty serious safety issue I would think. I will make the dealer service department aware of this, and continue to find out why these repairs should not be the responsibility of the manufacturer. By the way, mileage was 87,810 when this happened.

Came to a stop, began to turn left, steering wheel jerked to one side then power steering gave out mid turn, on a busy street, crossing over two lanes of traffic. It is nearly impossible to steer the vehicle when this happens. This has actually happened a handful of times at this point. Ford dealer can't figure it out, so I'm stuck with an unsafe vehicle to drive. How has this vehicle not been recalled!? it's not like it's small issue like radio problems, this is a safety issue!!!!! if you park the vehicle and shut it off, then restart it, the sterling will then work again (until next time it gives out) it's almost like restarting the car is rebooting the system. Either way, very scary when you're driving and you have no warning that your power steering is going to fail.
The steering wheel made a pop/cracking noise on start-up at first. The wheel would oscillate in place and only stop if I put pressure on it to turn it off center. The power steering would intermittently go out on start-up. I would turn the car off and on again until it returned. This was fine for a week or so, but then the power steering went out while driving. When the power steering fails, the car is nearly impossible to turn.
Driving and my wheel shakes and makes a horrifying noise. It's almost scary. Scared my wheels going to seize while I'm driving. Turn the car on sometimes and the power steering has failed. Have to restart the car to get it to work. Have read multiple other people who have the same problem. $2000 to get it fixed. This is ridiculous. Need a recall.
Over the last couple weeks we have experienced a loss of power steering and an increasingly severe "shaking" of our steering wheel when it is working. We took the car to the mechanic and was told that we need to replace the entire steering column due to a failure of the electronic power steering. The part alone is $900, $1,400 with labor. . My wife was driving home with our son from saint louis children's hospital back home 250 miles. As she's driving the power steering fails. When she gets home she tells me and I go out and start the vehicle and the power steering worked fine. Since original incident the vehicle electronic power assist steering (epas) works intermittently and sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. Called the local Ford dealership, tri-lakes Ford and they claim it's not a recall or a common problem although there's is tons of incidents of this happening nationwide all over the internet. Angered I then called Ford customer service and they give me the same run around saying this is unfortunate and they don't hear of this problem much and they cannot and will not help me. How many lives or wrecks has to be damaged before this issue is a recall? Ford knows its a fault and need to own up to it. The Mercury Mariner has the exact same part number for the replacement column as the Ford escape so I know this is a common problem. What if it was devastating? what if my wife and terminally ill child was injured or worse killed because of this problem? the real question should be, what of it was your child or your wife? Ford has lost my business for good. As well as our local dealership.

Steering shakes at any speed including when in park. Power steering also completely failed two times in the last 48 hours, shutting off the ignition and turning it back on restored power steering on both occasions. This is my wife's car which she uses to transport our 2 year and 9 month old children, as such a failure during operation could be devastating. I have her taking my vehicle until we get this safety issue resolved.
