I own a 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse, black. When I purchased the car, the paint appeared perfect, but in less than one year very bad 'sunbleached' or oxidized spots have appeared on the roof and trunk and appear to be getting worse in a hurry. The car has been washed and waxed regularly since I purchased it. Since these spots have shown up, I have been looking at other Eclipses around my area, and literally every single black Eclipse I see - probably upwards of 30 cars (2000-2003) - has the same problem, not to mention the thousands of online posts I have seen mentioning this same problem. I would like to know if there is any way to have the dealership pay for a new paintjob with current black paint (I do not want the same 2003 paint put on, only to have the same problem occur in 4 years) thank you very much!.
After having my car washed and detailed in late may of 2008, I noticed a white deterioration of paint on the hood. Over the past few months the damage has spread over the hood and the trunk of the vehicle like a fungus. I recently went online to research the problem and discovered hundreds of Mitsubishi owners are experiencing the same problems. Most have stated that Mitsubishi has been notified of the problem and will not take responsibility for the defect as the car is "no longer under the 36 month warranty period". Many of the complaints have noted the cost of repair as high as $3,500 - 9,000 to repaint the car. To repair the car could be more than the kelley blue book value for some owners. I have found no information as to whether or not a class action lawsuit has been filed, however, a gentleman in PA is organizing consumers to initiate a case. There are several websites that have been created ( deadeclipse. Com; Mitsubishisucks. Com) as a forum for hundreds of dissatisfied customers to voice their disappointment with the company/product. It seems unusual that with hundreds of complaints circulating about the manufacturer's defect (clear coat paint) on many of its models, the NHTSA has no record of investigation or recalls. Please consider this a formal complaint and initiate a formal investigation. I look forward to hearing from you. Please contact me as soon as possible. Thank you.

I have experienced multiple problems with my 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse. I assumed they were all just normal wear and tear until my most recent incident - the cover to my shock, passenger side, completely rusted exposing my shocks and allowing them to pop up, denting my hood and remaining exposed while I drive. Since this is such an unusual problem, I began investigating the other issues and they are all related to multiple recalls issued on my vehicle. I contacted Mitsubishi to alert them to the defect(s) as well as encourage them to alert other owners of the same model. It took them less than a week to decide not to investigate my car. They haven't even seen the damage. I offered to send photos and they were declined. They didn't even want a licensed Mitsubishi dealer to inspect my car. I think their lack of interest and concern is irresponsible and dangerous.

Incidents: the convertible top leaks and the seatbelts get completely soaked with water every time it rains especially in downpours.
I will have had my car 5years in mid-June. Last year in November I noticed that my black car was turning a whitish grey but only on the hood and trunk. In the spring I took it to the dealer where I purchased it brand new, he took pictures and showed it to the regional manager, and they both agreed that it was a defect in the paint ,and that the paint was a problem that year ( 2003 ). They painted it but only the hood and trunk. Then in March of this year I noticed that the rest of the car is doing the same thing. So I took it back to the dealer and they said that it was considered an old car and out of warranty, but if the paint was bad last year do to a defect in the paint it's still the same car with the same defective paint and they refuse to have any thing to do with it. My car only has 37,000 miles on it . Can some one please help me? I love my car never any problems with it,runs great but looks like ?!@#$%.
Paint on hood, trunk and fenders is peeling, cracking, coming off. Continues to worsen. Mitsubishi is aware of the "defect", and state they are not mandated to fix it. Upon doing some research, I am learning that there are hundreds of mistibishis (all black in color, like mine) that are having this problem.
I have a black I guess you can call it black and white 2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse. The clear coat it completely off and the black paint is just about gone. I have rust spots coming through now. It first started on the hood about a year ago and now it is everywhere. I also had to replace two of my rims because they were bent. Now I have a shimmy in my steering wheel when I get up to 65mph this started about a year ago also. I have gotten new tires and rims on it hoping that would help the problem but it is just as bad as it was last year.
I purchased a 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse gts brand new in August of 2003. Since that time the paint on the top of the vehicle has faded and the clear coat is chipping away. The color is now a milky white and looks terrible only after 4. 5 years and 38,000 miles of owning the vehicle. Something is not right here.
I. The events leading up to the failure are:
1. I washed and waxed my car on a regular basis. 2. I drove my car on the highway at a speed of approximately 70 miles per hour. Ii. Failure and its consequences:
1. The passenger side molding on the front windshield officially called the a pillar separated form the bolts which held it to the frame of the car and flew off striking and denting the passenger door. 2. The bolds that held this molding to the frame are still attached to the car showing that there was a breakdown of the adhesive material that originally held this part to the bolts. Iii. What was done to correct the failure?
nothing
1. After going to the dealer, they contacted the factory representative, nothing was done. 2. After speaking to a customer service representative from Mitsubishi motors of north America, nothing was done. 3. After writing to the president of Mitsubishi motors of north America on September 24, 2007, I heard nothing. 4. On October 8, 2007, I sent a second letter to the president of Mitsubishi motors of north America and members of the board of directors. I coincidentally received a call from the customer service representative from Mitsubishi motors of north America the same day who said that my situation had been reviewed and the decision was the same. To do nothing. 5. I have written to the president again on October 10, 2007. As of today I have not heard from anyone. 6. To this day no one, including the factory representative, has inspected my vehicle to see what caused this failure.

My wife and I were driving on the highway and the right molding on the front window flew off the car. (it is called the a pillar. ) it shot back, banging against the side of the car dented the door. When we got to our destination I looked and the bolts were still in the frame, but the molding was gone. The next day I went to the dealer (coconut creek Mitsubishi in coconut creek, florida) to ask if this was normal. They of course said no. I asked what they would do to get it replaced. Their first response was to sell me a new one at a cost of $163. 70 plus tax, but they would install it for free because they admitted that this should not happen. A week later I spoke to the service manager michael see at coconut creek Mitsubishi and find out what the factory rep told him. Michael told me that john hackworth the factory rep said I'm not going to do anything. The factory rep never looked at the car or inspected the bolts to see why the molding flew off. He heard the age of the car and the mileage and that was the basis for his final decision. The story that michael see and the assistant manager of the dealership stanly anders keep telling me is that the car is six years old and has 95,000 miles on it and things break. First mr. Anders said that it was normal wear and tear. The fact that the factory rep never called to look at the vehicle and inspect the bolts to see what happened, in my opinion is unacceptable. The fact that Mitsubishi motors of north America has no influence over the decisions of a factory rep is absurd. In addition, the dashboard is slowly falling apart. The dashboard had approximately seven cracks in it when I purchased the car. The dealer said that this is normal on convertibles and that they will not replace it. Your car, your problem we did more then enough for a used car. Today there are about eleven or twelve cracks and I suppose that one day it will just fall apart completely, but according to the dealer, that's normal.
2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse paint defect.
We have a 2003 black Mitsubishi Eclipse. The paint is going bad on all the top areas of the car. The clear coat peeling and it is turning white. I have seen many other black Mitsubishi's like this and have seen other web sites that speak of this. It is unbelievable that in two or three years that a factory paint job from a major car company can go bad this soon and in so many cars. I will not let anyone I know buy another Mitsubishi unless this problem is resolved in a satisfactory manner.
I own a black 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse. On or about June 1, 2007 I noticed a mysterious white spot forming on the roof of my car. Within the next month or so, the white spot turned into several white spots and now currently on August 5, 2008 the entire roof is covered in white and one has even turned to rust. I contacted a Mitsubishi dealership and was told that the car is not covered after 36,000 miles. My question is, what does mileage have to do with paint? I then did some research online and found out that this is a very common problem with Mitsubishi vehicles produced around 2003 and that the issue is due to a defect in the primer used by the company. So why doesn't Mitsubishi fess up to their problem and fix the mess? there are thousands if not millions of dissatisfied customers with newer vehicles that look horrible. In my case, I own a fairly new vehicle that I am still making payments on that looks absolutely worthless. I am ashamed to own this vehicle, it looks like I don't take care of my car. When it all actuality, this is not my fault. I would appreciate any help with this matter. I would like Mitsubishi to repaint my car at no cost to me.
Vehicle stated clearly on window sticker that vehicle included a stainless steel exhaust system. The entire system is now rusting.

The contact owns a 2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse spyder. While driving approximately 45 mph the driver observed that the dashboard cover sustained excessive cracks. The manufacturer was notified of the defect; however, the part was unavailable. The vehicle has not been repaired due to the unavailability and uncertainty of the part. The failure mileage was 38,000.
The car is a 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse. There were no specific events leading to the failure, but the paint on the trunk and roof of the car has oxidized and appears to have dissolved. The car is outside of warranty, and we will need to have it repainted on our own. Based upon my internet research it appears that this problem is widespread.
My dash on my 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse spider gt is cracking. I have talked to many other people who say this is all happening to them also. This is a manufactures defect that needs to be fixed!!.
Cheap dashboard of a 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse has over 5 cracks on it. The cracks are growing and someday it can just fall apart and result in danger while driving.
Every time there is a heavy rain my car leaks onto the drivers side floor board. This is not a little water its more like putting your feet into a lake. I believe the water is coming though the outside vent by the windshield wipers since the water is running down the inside wall. It does not appear to be coming in though the roof.
I purchased car in 2003 and within 6 months certain areas on the car the paint began to diminish. Taken to Mitsubishi for effected areas and they painted car on two different occasions, (the effected areas at that time) but when the rest of the car continued to diminish Mitsubishi refused to paint affected areas because car was out of warranty. I have seen several Mitsubishi's with the same problem, and I can't figure out why Mitsubishi doesn't paint the entire car at the first sign of this problem. The entire car is painted with this clear coat, so the entire car will eventually have this problem. However, Mitsubishi doesn't paint the entire vehicle all at once so that their customers will only go to the dealer the first time it happens, and will just pay out of their pockets when it happens again! this saves the greedy company money!.

I own a 2003 black Mitsubishi Eclipse gts that has a horrible oxidizing paint problem. The hood, trunk and top of my car are nearly all gray at this point. The problem first appeared about two years ago when the car was only three years old. The dealership refused to repaint the car stating that it was past warranty.
I am experiencing problems with the corrosion of my paint on my 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse; I began experiencing problems in early 2005 (just a little over a year of owning the brand new vehicle. ) while my complaint does not involve a safety issue, it does involve false representation of the product and expectations. Several websites contain hundreds of other individuals complaining about the same situation. I have addressed this issue with my Mitsubishi dealer and was turned away since I had exceeded the mileage according to my warranty. I do know that I would not have purchased this vehicle if I knew the paint was so cheaply done or manufactured. I would like to know if there are any recalls on the paint or if there are any class action suits against Mitsubishi. While such items as paint and tires are considered "normal wear and tear", one would not expect their tires to blow out just days after leaving a dealership just as the paint should last until I at least complete the financing period. Again, the expectations of the overall vehicle have not been met, even with normal upkeep of the vehicle. Please let me know of any information that can be offered.
Dashboards on the Mitsubishi Eclipse model years 2000-2005 have a tendency to crack as they are made of plastic. No force is applied that makes them crack, simply heat from the sun or cold temperatures. My dashboard and many thousand others have several cracks and this problem has not been addressed by Mitsubishi.
The rubbers on my 2004 Mitsubishi Eclipse spyder is always leaking water into the car, creating a mold smell, destroying the speakers, ect. The dealership replaced them about 4 months ago or less, and they are leaking again on the convertible top, making my seat belt wet, which I believe is a hazard if in a accident, my seat, and floors, not to mention it is leaking into the door panels. My son has fallen out of the car slipping on the water on the door panel, not that he needed a ambulance but got a fat lip when he put his teeth into them when he fell, also getting a bruised leg.
Paint job defects. I have owned several Mitsubishis vehicles in my family. All resulting in paint defects on the car. Only one has not, dealership said because there is a defect and that one vehicle not affected was made and painted in japan. Cost of repaint of vehicle is $1500 to $2500 depending on where you go.

My calapana black 2001 Eclipse gt started to fade a year ago. I noticed that most black Mitsubishi cars starts to fade in 2-3 years. I have a couple of friends that have the same problem but refuse to complain here because they already done several times to the dealer but never had a response. I also have exact problem as complain no. Odi 100511429 NHTSA complaint 448638. As mentioned, the car has trouble shifting from 1st to 2nd gear (worst when cold), stutters when first accelerating, and makes a continuous rattling noise when the clutch is not engaged. I complained to Mitsubishi dealer many times but they refuse to be responsible.
Dashboard becomes brittle, and cracks result--causing airbag on passenger side to be misaligned--this is on a 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse rs, 2. 4l-----the company refuses to fix it, I would like a new dashboard.
I own a 2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse gt with a paint-peeling problem. The vehicle has a horrible paint-peeling problem all over the top areas of the car. I bought the car with about 48,000 miles, and the paint problem started about two thousand miles later. I have seen many, many vehicles with the same problem as my car. I took my vehicle to a Mitsubishi dealership so that they could take pictures and send them in. I received a response about three weeks later saying that they would not do anything to the car because I was not the original owner and the vehicle was out of warranty. The fact that I wasn't the original owner has nothing to do with the paint being a problem on other people's cars. They refuse to accept that the defect is on their behalf and refuse to fix the problem. My vehicle is beginning to rust and I am not able to afford the repainting of my car. The vehicle will just continue to rust and become a road hazard that is out of my control. I take well-above decent care of my vehicles, but there is nothing I could do about the paint. While it may not be a road hazard or cause in deaths or injuries, it does cause excessive, and unnecessary, rust which would eventually lead to hazardous vehicles, which people cannot afford to fix because they are still paying for the vehicle. Thank you for taking the time to read this. Chad.
Have a 2003 Eclipse and many many problems since purchasing. After regular scheduled tire balance and rotation, took the car back because of shaking at 50-60 mph, the dealership told me the rims were bent, and they would have to be replaced, and they did (right after balance and rotating? would they balance if the rims were bent?) had my car in numerous times for moisture in my windows when putting them down and back up, a lot of moisture and bad visibility, replaced strips which helped mold smell, but can't fix the moisture. B/c of the bad visibility I am extra careful, but my car should not have this problem. Recently the molding on the windshield was coming loose, the dealership fixed it (sent it to a window place) and since then I have a film on my windshield which makes it very difficult to see. . . I have cleaned the glass numerous times, my wipers were fairly new, mitsbushi wouldn't look at it when I took it in for another rim replacement. My car still shakes, my windows and windshield have bad visibility problems, and now my sunroof button has popped out and will not open unless I hold it in first.
I purchased my 1998 Eclipse GS in 2003 with approx. 38,000 miles on it. Within 2 months, my driver's door handle broke when opening the door. This occurred on a day in the middle of the summer. Not thinking much about it, I had it replaced at a cost of almost $300. 00 (parts, labor, & paint) it happened again within 3 months. The dealership replaced this one also and only charged me for the part, a mere $175. 00. About 6 months later, my girlfriend at the time was opening the passenger door and that handle broke off. This makes 3 broken door handles in 11 months. I might be a strong guy, I guess, but my girlfriend was 5'1" and about 90 lbs. . The kind of girl who had trouble tearing notebook paper. Well, while waiting for the dealership to order a replacement handle, my brother was getting into the driver's side of my car to install a new stereo and the driver's side handle snaps off in his hand. I had to leave a window down for a week inorder to get in and out of the vehicle. I have since stopped ordering from the dealership as a fiberglass door handle was available online for $35. 00 and came black in color. To date, as of 2010, I have had to replace the driver's door handle 6 times and the passenger side twice. After speaking wit quite a few Mitsubishi enthusiasts, I have discovered that this is a problem Mitsubishi knows about, always knew about, and has simply refused to fix, even as far as not making replacement door handles out of stronger material. I will never buy a Mitsubishi again based on this simple design flaw which the company deems is beneath them to make right.

When the consumer drove the vehicle, it was hard to see out of the rear window. The vehicle was designed with the back setting to high up. The manufacturer and the dealer were aware of the problem.
