Brake Disc Problems of Mitsubishi Galant - part 1

I have replaced the pads and turned the rotors on a 2001 Mitsubishi Galant DE to correct the problem with the car shimmying and poor braking ability. This corrected the problem for only 5,000 miles. I can see that I am going to have to replace or turn the rotors again and possibly replace the brakes. I have a friend who is having the exact same problem with his 2001 Mitsubishi Galant ES. I have also talked to other owners who are experiencing the exact same problem. After I ahve found this web site I will refer them to write a complaint. This has been very frustraiting because there does not seem to be a resolution and the car is recently out of the warranty at only 36,000 miles. I would like to know if there are other people who are experiencing the same problems and if they have found a resolution ?.

Consumer had front/rear brakes and rotors replaced three different timesdue to excessive wear after 1,200 miles.

Vehicle purchased on 2/25/02. Brakes are squealing very loudly, and consumer is concerned about their effectiveness. Vehicle was checked by dealer, who stated that nothing could be done to stop squeaking.

When the brakes are applied at any speed a violent vibration can be felt in steering wheel, dealer has been contacted, but cannot locate source of problem. Please provide further details.

Car doesn't always come to a complete stop when brakes are applied.

Brake problems since the beginning. Vibration when braking any speed, dealer couldn't locate the problem and pads where fine. Withen a few months I replaced the brake pads and had the rotors turned, I still have the vibration problem. I;ve heard about a factory recall on the brakes but couldn't locate any information with an online search.

The brakes on my car have been giving problems ever since I bought the car. I change the front brakes at the request of the dealers and paid almost $300. The brakes still give problem, they brake very slowly, forever squeeking and give off a dark fibre to the rim of the car.

Pulsation when braking @ high speeds. Rotors trimmed 10/99. Problem still existed. New rotors again in 00. New rotors and pads installed 2/01. 8000 miles later, still pulsation at high speeds. Going back to dealership 6/12 for brake pulsation. Faulty rotors. Called Mitsubishi.

When trying to stop car it would vibrate, a year late same problem.

Brakes has to be replaced every two months. When driving vehicle brakes grind, it sound like it is metal to metal.

Vehicle shutters severly when braking. Dealer resurfaced the rotors/changed the pads & replaced lower control arm. The higher the speed the more it shuttered. Dealer repaired vehicle on 6-05-2000 because it was spqueaking & pulsating. When vehicle was picked up, it was doing the same thing.

Vehicle steering and brake vibrate upon braking, braking distance too long. Front rotors warped - resurfaced at 14847 miles. Same problem at 21315 miles - front rotors replaced. Ignition replaced at 21274 miles - problem (when car started electrical components of radio, wipers, a/c did not work) this started intermittently shortly after purchase, very frequent occurence when changed 24000miles brake problems again, 25600 miles at dealers again for brake problem.

The front brake system was replaced, after replacement front brakes required replacement a second time which was causing grinding noises, 2 repairs within 17000 miles seems excessive.

Dealer admits to bad rotors and pads on Galants, but will not repair under warranty because Mitsubishi will not reimburse them.

Brake pads have been replaced twice in 7 months. Vibrations in front end and brake pedal continue. Car has been to dealer 5 times they say it is normal.

Vehicle shakes/vibrates due to warn out front brake rotors/pads.

Disc brake rotors need to be turned or replaced every 5000 miles.

Twice in less than 20,000 miles the front rotors have warped prematurely. Required brake pad replacement and grinding of rotors.

Either when driving or braking the car begins to shake.

We took delivery of our car on 2/25/99. It was taken into the dealer service dept on 5/12/99 with bad virbration in the steering upon braking. They said the rotors and bushings were bad and replaced them. 2 mos later, back again with same problem. Same thing done again to fix. We have taken the car back 5 times for the exact same thing. The problem keeps returning after about 2000 miles each time, they replace the same thing. I have contacted Mitsubishi and the dealer pete moore, no response. I am afraid there is something very wrong with this car. I have found on the internet where many other people are having the same exact problem and they also have taken their cars in and the exact same repairs are done over and over. Something is wrong here. Something that could be very dangerous. No one wants to do anything about it. I believe there is a defect in the manufacture of some of these cars. They can't fix it for good. The problem creeps back within a couple thousand miles. Now I know I am not the only one out there with this problem. Please, I believe this could be a safety hazard. I am afraid to travel. I am afraid the what if what ever is wrong with this car that they cannot find, what if it breaks. What will happen. Will I be able to stop, to steer? will I lose control of the car? something is bad wrong here. I feel this really needs to be checked out. Thank you.

Steering wheel shakes violently duing braking and at speeds above 35 miles per hour.

At braking, the steering starts to shake. At times I have gone through a red light because the car would not stop, you apply the brake but there is just nothing there, other times because of the shaking , it feels like the car is going to come apart I have taken the car to the dealer for the same problem 4 different times. Each time they surface the rotors, and change the pads. But after 2 or 3 days the problem continues. The excuses that I get form the dealer varies from that there is too much heat in florida or that I drive through puddles or even one time they had the odasity of telling me that nor I or my wife knew how to drive and that we were destroying the brakes. In June of 2000 I saw the sal;esperson that sold me the car and he confessed to me that the Galant has this problem but that not even the manufacture knows what it is.

Both airbags failed to deploy, extensive front end damage on 07/06/00. Problem # 2 front disc brakes have always made a grinding noise and front end has a vibration. Car was taken back to dealer a couple of months after purchase, front brake shoes were replaced and rotors turned(not covered by warranty). This failed to fix problem, I have since learned to live with it(can't afford to have it fixed). Note: I believe you may have a recall on my third problem with this vehicle, although I have not received a recall notice from the manufacturer, my car loses power to my accessories(radio, air conditioning,etc. ).

When driving at any speed and applying the brakes there is a grinding noise, and the brakes are rubbing and the steering wheel vibrates and jumps from left to right at any speed.

Brakes have severe shake due to uneven parallelism or runout of rotor/ rotors are warping.

When driving at any speed and applying brakes vehicle is pulling to the left or right. Also, and there is some knocking noise coming from the vehicle.

We have been leasing the vehicle and brought the vehicle in four times because of grinding of brakes, and three times they have replaced them. The last time the brakes wore out completly, and only had them fix three months prior t that. We feel that it is a safety hazard to our lives and others and afraid to drive because it seems that three months bringing it back for brakes only 11500 miles on them, something is wrong somewhere.

This could be the worest car in the world, besides the brakes failing 9 times the head gasket and transmition and radio. The car needs to be sent to the scrap yard.

The braking system malfunctioned, causing noises or humming noises from the front end of the vehicle, and extended stopping distance which may result in an accident. Also, brake pads and master cylinder have been replaced. Cannot determine the problem. Problem began when vehicle had 11684 miles on it.

Three months after I bought my Mitsubishi Galant I heard a loud screaching noise it souned like metal grinding against metal, and I had to apply the brakes harder than usual for the car to stop. So I took it to the dealer and they had to replace the front rotors and brake pads. Another three months passed and I experienced the same problem, it started to become a trend, almost every 3,000 miles I had to replace my rotors and brake pads. This car is a death trap evertime I drive this car. I wonder if this is the day my brakes will fail completly. The scariest moment I had driving this car and I thought the car wouldn't stop was on March 3 1997. I was coming from the dealer after getting my brakes fixed traveling down roosevelt blvd, and when I was approaching a stop light and I drew my brakes I smelled smoke and noticed it come from my front tires and I also relized it was taken my car awhile to come to a complete stop I has to push the brakes a the way to the floor for the car to stop. I was frightened I thought the car was going to go right through the red light. I traveled the rest of the way home going about 35 mph instead of 50 mph and even at the slower speed, it was still difficult to stop. When I finally got home I called the dealer to come tow the car back. This is the unsafest car I ever drove I wouldn't recommend this car to my worst enemy. Everyone in my family is scared to drive and to get in the car, I'm very cautious about having a child riding in this car, because I don't want to jeopardize a child's life. I've had four cars all for over 5yrs and only had to replace the brakes once no car, especially a new car should have their brakes replaced eleven times to put is nicely that's just ridiculos. I've complained many time to the manufacture and they have ignored my complaints. This is a car that needs to be recalled a. S. A. P before someone dies, and what it will probably take for them to recall this piece of junk.

While driving the vehicle and applying the brakes, the brake would grab and release, grab and release. There was also a grinding noise. Driver used emergency brakes to stop vehicle. The rotors and brakes pads have been replaced by dealer.

Also, dealer replaced brake pads and rotors which have been replaced 5 times. The dealer will now no longer make repairs under warranty. Dealer said that the rotors are made of poor quality steel, which is causing the need for frequent brake repair.

Intermittently when brakes are applied vehicle pulls. Dealer has repaired and replaced pads and rotors several times.
