2005 Nissan Maxima transmission problem - my car began making a very loud knocking sound when I would shit from park to drive or reverse. It doesn't do it all the time, but it is doing it more frequestly now. In addition my transmission has begun to slip while driving. I googled 2005 Nissan Maxima issues and to my surprise there are countless complaints about tranmission issues with the Nissan Maxima. I am scheduled to bring my car to a mechanic tomorrow morning, but I feel like I know what the problem is after reading all the complaints. It appears I will need a new transmission. 44 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 08/17/2011

I like many others am having the exact transmission "slipping, jerking" problems between 2nd and 3rd gear. The rpm's just jump right up under acceleration, the transmission slips then catches causing a jerking, lurching forward action. It is very dangeroua especcially coming on to a majon highway. Because of this I will not let my wife and children drive in the car. We cannot afford the quoted $3500 to $4000 to replace the transmission. Nor do we feel as if we should have to. We have owne this car since new. It has been very reliable but this is abusrd. Nissan needs to recall this model year and replace with corrected transmission before someone gets killed. Or is that what it's going to take to get them to acknowledge the problem.

53 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 04/20/2011

My problem began in April 2011 and continue still. My car was shifting hard and jumping in and out of gear. I took it in to ray brandt Nissan and was told the motor mounts were broken and this was the problem causing the transmission to bump. As my vehicle warranty was approaching expiration I had it serviced to make sure things were in order. Anyway, just 2 weeks ago (mid January 2012) I took my car in for transmission service. When I got my car back the transmission slipping started again and this time it is happening more often. I will be going down the road and all of a sudden the transmission winds like it was put in neutral and the bumps into gear giving me a whiplash effect (did I mention I suffer with neck pain). I am now really afraid to drive this car as it may shift into neutral while I am passing someone or crossing traffic and the result could be fatal. With all of the complaints made, I sure hope someone will come to our aid and have this problem recalled. I called the Nissan complaint division and they said since they did not actually work on the transmission, they could not help me in any way. In other words, give me your money and forget you. It is sad when you buy a vehicle and pay alot for it thinking you will have dependable transportation you get screwed so badly. I will never buy another Nissan again and will pass the word on to as many people as possible. P. S. I have owned Toyota's in the past and they always stand behind you and help as much as they can. Please help!!!!.

I have a 2005 Nissan Maxima. For the past few mths I have noticed the transmission slipping or stalling on change of gears. My car was purchased a yr. Old and had around 40000 miles. The car now has right at 90000 miles. I have always bragged on how great of a car, the Nissan Maxima is. Now, I' m very disappointed. And very concerned about the safety of my family. On very drive I experience severe jerking and stalling. I more so experience the jerks and stalling while traveling at a 20/40 miles.

57 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 12/16/2010

I have a 2005 Nissan Maxima and just like everyone else I am having transmission problems with this vehicle. It jolts hard when going from park to drive or if I reverse and go to drive. Also the cars gear slips between 2nd and 3rd gear. I think it's ridiculous the amount of people having this problem this a vehicle the same year and model and the complaints I have seen and no one is doing nothing about getting it fixed. There should be a recall!!! does someone have to get killed for the issue to be addressed??.

58 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 12/15/2010

2005 Nissan Maxima was shifting from 1st to 2nd and also downshifting very hard as well. The transmission would also slip occasionally when driving slow through for an example a row of stop signs. 2 weeks after I purchased the car I had to replace the transmission $3800. 00 from a dealer and the dealership I bought it from offered no help because I paid cash for the car. Now I have my new transmission and it shifts better but I have been having the same slippage problem as before and only had the new transmission 3 months. There is a major defect in these cars and Nissan should fix that. I have owned 3 Nissans but after I get rid of this car I will never own another one if Nissan dosent take some responsibility and fix their mistakes. No matter how costly, they will end up loosing alot of long time customers if they dont.

62 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2010

The transmission is slipping in between 1st to 2nd gear. A very hard jerk often. A hard jerk when going into reverse. It happens when the car is warmed up. I am being told that this is a very very common problem with the 2004 and 2005 Maximas and looking online it is a defect in the cars transmission assembly. I am being told I have to replace the transmission and it is very costly. Then to most likely have the same problem with the new transmission gets about 60,000 miles on it. Have been having problem for months, so being that we do not have finances to repair, the car is sitting.

63 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 09/02/2010

When the engine is warn and you shift from park to drive or reverse the car jerks really hard before it goes to the desired gear. Once it picks up you will feel a jerk while driving especially when you are slowing down from high speed to a stop. It really jerks around 2nd and 3rd shifting, picking up or slowing down. During driving when you depress the accelerator, it does not pick up right away and the engine will rave before it kicks in with a jerk. The transmission slips before it picks up. Once you start acceleration, there is a rattling sound when you press the gas. I have taken it to the dealership several time and they tell me they cannot find anything wrong with it and that I should always use premium gas. The last time I had to spend $500 to replace the visa valve and evap valve the the problem still continues. This happens after driving the car and it has warmed up. The dealership cannot replicate the problem because whenever you take it in they wait till the engine has cooled down before they take it for a test drive. It sounds to me like they do it on purpose. My car is about 110k miles and this started about 10k miles ago.

67 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 04/05/2010

My 2005 Nissan Maxima's transmission started slipping in the September of 2009, I had maintenance done on the entire car done including the transmission which stopped the problem temporarily. By January of 2010 the problem came back and worst. The car would stop in the middle of traffic and it took about 5 seconds for the car to change shift. It would also jerk very violently when changing shifts, so hard that I was almost pushed out to the car in front of me, I finally had it on April 5th 2010 when out of nowhere the transmission gave out entirely. I was going up a hill and the automatic transmission let go so it started going backwards fast, I pressed forward on the gas only to get a hard rev and nothing else. I kept going until I hit the brakes hard inadvertently making me hit a tree denting my bumper. My car is now sitting in my driveway until I come up with the money to pay for a brand new transmission. I spoke to Nissan and they suggested I take my car to a certified dealer for a diagnostics run which cost me 100 dollars. They offered me a new transmission for 4500 but I haggled down to 2500. I am in college and cannot afford spending that kind of money. I am still paying off this car and it is causing me distress. If I don't get any help I don't know what I will do.

68 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 04/05/2010

Same as everyone else. My 2005 Nissan Maxima's transmission is slipping. It makes a "popping" noise. I have had the motor mounts replaced. It still needs strut mounts & possibly new struts. I haven't had any "near misses" in traffic or anything though. I am unemployed & can't afford to fix it in order to sell it. I'm sure the "corporate" people at Nissan doesn't have any of these dilemmas.

69 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 03/25/2010

I purchased a Nissan Maxima sl 2005 on oct 2004, at this time the car has 66,500 miles and we are having transmission problems. Some of these problems includes (once the car is hot): 1. It takes few seconds for thr transmission to click into gear from reverse into drive accompanied by a very hard jerk. 2. The transmission slips out during regular driving then jerking back into gear and this hard jerking is affection the transmission mounts. We had a transmission oil change at 30,000 and 60,000 miles. We read plenty of online posting of 100's of customer with the same problems with the same Nissan Maxima 2005 so we contacted Nissan consumer affair for help. They instructed us to go to the dealer for a diagnostics, at the dealer they told us that they won't diagnose the transmission until the transmission oil is change and one of the transmission mounts is replace for about $700. My wife uses this car with the kids and I'm concern that they can have a problem that can cause an accident.

70 Transmission Gear Slipping problem

Failure Date: 02/07/2010

I have a 2005 Nissan Maxima, after approximately 100,000 miles, my transmission started to slip. Whether putting the car into reverse or in to gear to go forward, the car jerks violently, as well as when attempting to accelerate, the car revs to up to the 5000 rpm range, and then jerks into gear. This occurs between 1st and second gear, as well as 3rd and 4th gear. This caused me to almost get in to an accident. After doing research there are thousands of other Nissan Maxima from 2005 experiencing the same issue.
