Transmission would not shift in motion leaving from a stop sign. I later found out my transmission lines had corroded away leaking a large amount of transmission fluid. After replacing brakes and adding brake fluid I noticed the brake fluid had leaked from bottom. I had to replace all brake lines and fittings due to corrosion.

Tamara recall prev owned veh, bought from dealership as "safe" to operate,110,000 mi on 11072016. Prev owner and current owner had ve had veh serviced regularly. Undercarriage and braking noise while in motion on hwy. Rear door not able to open, manually or with remote. Maint light and tire light came on. Post noise inspection by mechanic, left (?)front axle boot is split. Front noise undetermined (sway bar links or strutts?) at this time. Rear left driver's side axle bearing and seal leaking transmission fluid(?) into brakes. Brakes affected by leaking fluid and will have to be replaced due to damage by fluid, which could cause brake failure while driving. Rear door lock failure due to interior corrosion/rust. May need to be replaced.

Vehicle purchased used July 2011 w/ 45k miles. In may 2012 at 55k had brakes repaired, all 4 wheels new rotors pads and hardware. In 2014 noticed brake fluid leaking from caliper and discoloring wheels. Dealer service verified front calipers frozen (guide pins and pads rusted in place as well as caliper pistons). This appears to be a design flaw as the caliper does not incorporate any protective boot for the guide pins or any interface between the pad shoe and the caliper body. The caliper body and guide pin appear to be easily oxidized, a fact that Toyota attributes to "environmental conditions". Apparently Toyota designs for the mildest conditions rather than the harshest. Oddly, it is only the front caliper with this design: the rear caliper incorporates a more modern design with a boot for the guide bolt.

We were stopped at a stop light at the time of the incident. An alarm went off in the car and the red brake light came on. At that point we rolled the car to see if the brakes were working. This is when we realized there were no brakes and the only break we had was our emergency brake. It was taken to a nearby mechanic where it was determined that a caliper over-extended causing the brake fluid to leak out- losing the hydraulic break system all together. Luckily we were not moving at the time of the incident because having lost the entire break system while moving could have been extremely dangerous.

On 8/22/2011, phil bachman Toyota in johnson city, TN replaced a leaking left front caliper on my Toyota 4runner. The leak was so bad that the front brake pads were saturated and had to be repalced. Brake fluid covered my tire and wheel, and the wheel had several knicks from something that occurred related to the brakes and this issue. On 3/16/12, the very same problem occurred again with the left front caliper; the brake pads again had to be replaced but phil bachman did this work under warranty. On 1/31/13, the very same problem occurred but this time it was with the right front caliper, and it will cost me several hundred dollars to have this fixed. I did a google search and found that many 2003 and 2004 Toyota 4runners have this problem. Why was there not a recall by Toyota for this problem? it is a safety issue--by the time I realized what the problem was each time, my life was at risk in driving this vehicle with this type of problem.
The rear axle seals repeatedly fail on this vehicle, I'm now having to make a fourth costly replacement of both the rear axle seal and contaminated brake shoes. For the fourth time the rear axle seal has failed which leaks brake fluid onto rear brake shoes, resulting in severe reduction of rear braking power. Also, as a result the front brakes are placed under undue pressure and warping of front brake rotors occurs which must also be addressed. While I have previously filed complaints over this same issue since 2005 with both Toyota and the nhtsb, there has been no recall initiated. The last time my rear axle seals were replaced was less than 20,000 miles ago. This vehicle only sees normal wear and usage. I am not the only complaint as many others have experienced the same issue based on Toyota forum discussions and a search of nhtsb complaint filings. Toyota customer service center again refused to assist me in any way with todays complaint filing on 7/31/12.

No brakes: brake pedal went all the way to the floor without vehicle stopping. Upon my personal inspection at time of incident, I found the brake fluid reservoir to be full and no brake fluid leaks, anywhere, were found. The Toyota service manager where I bought the vehicle stated that cause was a defective master brake cylinder assembly. I believe this is a manufacturing quality issue as I have not heard of a master brake cylinder assembly malfunctioning within a two year time frame.
Ithe contact had 2002 Toyota 4-runner serviced at dealership because of brake problems and the abs light was on. Had brake problems several times ,and had vehicle serviced several times. The contact told dealership wheels kept locking , and she did not feel safe drivingthe vehicle. Dealership left parts off the brakes. The contact found the parts in trunk. Took vehicle back to the dealership who said it happend because brake fluid leak. Also, a tail light was out. The contact's vehicle was involved in an accident two weeks ago, did not hit anyone. Was going south and ended up going west. The wheels locked, and vehicle went completely to the right, hit the shoulder, and flipped over. The contact sustained injuries. A police report was taken. The contact wore seat belts, and was traveling 55 mph. The roads were clear and dry. The manufacturer has not been contacted.
