36 Service Brakes problem of the 2004 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 06/01/2022

I bought my 2004 Toyota 4runner sport edition as a new car, and have been the sole owner of the vehicle. I have taken good care of it the entire time. Regular car washes, service maintenance and necessary repairs over time. I recently had my 4runner in for repairs and spent a considerable amount of money, over $6,000 in anticipation of driving it for many more years. Following the repairs I was told by the mechanic that the frame was extremely rusted and that the entire frame would need to be replaced. There are large holes rusted through in many areas of the frame and a tremendous amount of rust over the entire frame. Rusted pieces of the frame have fallen off. I fear for the safety of my family and me if I were to drive the vehicle at all. I have barely driven it since learning of the dangerous condition of the frame. I've limited any driving at all to my immediate area, and have driven very carefully and slowly, as I am extremely concerned that there might be a catastrophic failure of the frame while driving and I may be injured or killed, or worse. . . . The vehicle might cause harm or death to another person. I am now basically without a vehicle and have been forced to rely on my daughter's car, leaving the family with only one vehicle. This is a major failure of the vehicle. I can provide photos and video at your request. Toyota must be held accountable for the failure of this frame. The vehicle is now useless. I expect Toyota to rectify this situation immediately. Please contact me as soon as possible. Thank you. [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. 38 Service Brakes problem of the 2017 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 02/17/2022

Failed brake master cylinder, this is still a rather new vehicle and the mechanics said this is unlikely in a new low mileage vehicle. I did research and this has only happened a few times, seems like a safety recall should be put in place.

39 Service Brakes problem of the 2021 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 02/13/2022

Driving up to 60mph the steering wheel vibrates excessively. I have taken it to the dealer and got repairs to fix it but 2 days later it returned. I had wheels balanced and rotated with an alignment. I fear I will loose control of the SUV soon.

40 Service Brakes problem of the 2004 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 01/23/2022

The frame is rusted completely throughout. Very dangerous!.

41 Service Brakes problem of the 2006 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 11/24/2021

My 2006 Toyota 4 runner, I've found a large amount of rust through out the frame of the vehicle. I feel the vehicle is not safe to drive. Toyota has frame replacement recalls to the tundras, and sequias but not the 4runner. I feel this is an issue that Toyota is aware of. I also feel that something should be done for manufacturing a vehicle with defective chassis.

42 Service Brakes problem of the 2004 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 11/09/2021

Seized front right brake caliper caused vehicle to slide off road during sudden stop to avoid debris in roadway. Took vehicle to a brake shop and they found that right front wheel was locked. This is the third time I have had the exact same problem with the brake system. The previous times, the problem occurred during nice weather and with windows open I smelled the burning brake pads and was able to get the problem fixed before it became a hazard. On the first previous incident, the repair required replacement of both front brake caliper, rotors, and pads. On the second previous occasion less than 20,000 miles ago both front and rear calipers, rotors and pads were replaced. This is apparently a known defect in the 2004 Toyota 4runner, yet Toyota has not conducted a recall to fix an extremely dangerous and ongoing problem. Note: I originally purchased the vehicle in new jersey in 2004 and a virginia Toyota dealer (koons Toyota) worked on the brake system multiple times (2005-2006) and finally replaced the entire system.

43 Service Brakes problem of the 2020 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 10/12/2021

Break problem after letting car sit overnight and coming up to a stop sign or anything slowly pedal goes to the floor if you pump tge pedal the brakes will come back and seem to work fine except when sitting in a drive-through line with your foot on the brake pedal it'll slowly lose brake pressure and you'll start creeping forward until the pedal starts going lower and lower and requires excessive pressure to hold vehicle stopped. It doesn't happen all the time but it is fairly consistent. Especially through the drive thru line is when you notice it took to dealership dealership said there was nothing wrong with it.

44 Service Brakes problem of the 2019 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 10/07/2021

Anytime you go above 60mph the car and steering wheel shake pretty violently. If you take your foot off the gas it goes away temporarily. The same happens at times when braking, the car and steering wheel will shake. Tires have been balanced, rotated, and replaced with no improvement. This seems to be a well known and wide spread problem with Toyota offering no real solution. The vehicle seems hard to control and could be dangerous at speeds above 60. I am around 50,000 miles on my 4runner and the problem seems to have started when my tires were replaced a few months ago.

45 Service Brakes problem of the 2017 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 09/27/2021

While driving at full speed on the freeway, another vehicle stopped suddenly in front of me. My brake pedal was soft and went down almost to the floor. Rapid pulsing of brakes, as would be expected with the abs (antilock brake system), did not occur. I pulled around to the shoulder and barely managed to stop in time to avoid a collision, which was quite a frightening experience. I have had a few similar incidents since then, and have noticed that the brake pedal is a bit soft until pumping the pedal a few times. A local dealer diagnosed the problem and said the "abs actuator assembly" has failed and needs to be replaced. The part itself costs >$2900, making this with labor a ~$3800 repair. (please see attached) 1. This part is not subject to normal wear and tear. 2. Although beyond the 3/36 warranty, this vehicle is relatively new (2019) with only ~55k miles on it. This part should not fail after so relatively few miles. 3. Failure of this abs part causes the entire brake system to fail, since the abs is tied in to the brake system. 4. Failure of this part represents a severe hazard, risk, and safety concern, with significant potential to cause injury or death of driver/passengers/pedestrians, or persons in other vehicles. 5. The cost to repair this is not trivial and represents a major expense. I feel that in light of the above, Toyota should accept responsibility for failure of this part. 46 Service Brakes problem of the 2005 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 08/12/2021

The rear control arm broke while I was driving causing me to swerve uncontrollably and almost causing a collision.

47 Service Brakes problem of the 2005 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 07/31/2021

The back brake lines rusted out completely crumbling causing me to almost collide head on with oncoming traffic while my kids where in the car. This was a terrifying experience. Upon further inspection the back brakes were so rusted out that they crumbled to dirt.

48 Service Brakes problem of the 2003 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 07/19/2021

Due to severe rust underneath the vehicle, there have been a few issues that have made the vehicle very unsafe to drive. Last week, both of my rear brake lines were completely done and leaking brake fluid leaving me with no brakes. This was due to rust and corrosion that had eaten the metal lines away. The radiator mounts are corroding, as well as the skid plate for my fuel tank and a few spots on my frame near the rear. I was not aware of the rust as I just got the vehicle a few weeks ago. I was driving in traffic when my brake light came on and I noticed my brakes didn't seem to be very effective and they eventually got the point where they were not working or slowing the vehicle at all. Once I took it to the shop and they put it on the lift, the mechanics pointed out just how bad the rust was.

49 Service Brakes problem of the 2003 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 06/16/2021

Frame is rotted out and brake lines attached to the frame as well as every suspension component. Car failed inspection deemed unsafe to drive. This problem has been addressed for tacoma, tundra and sequoia but not 4runner. These frames have the same issue as those and needs to be repaired by Toyota due to lack of rust and corrosion protection. There’s no reason 4runner should be overlooked for the same issue as the other full frame trucks.

50 Service Brakes problem of the 1999 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 06/14/2021

Over the years of ownership, my vehicle has been overwhelmed with rust issues. All four axles are rusted to include the brake components. I didn't realize how bad the rusting was until I heard "popping" noise when making turns the rear suspension sway bar link was rusted so bad, it broke free. I had the rack and pinion replaced in August of 2020 because rust ate through the lines. The frame appears to have separations due to rust as well.

51 Service Brakes problem of the 2006 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 06/06/2021

Corrosion related issues not found on other makes based on personal experience with other boxed ladder frame vehicles extreme corrosion involving disintegration of the rear trailing arm already haphazardly repaired with steel doubler ladder frame is disintegrating from interior of frame penetrating towards the exterior facade compromises structural integrity and safety of vehicle that is seen beyond on many 4runners beside this particular example brake calipers sticking due to corrosion requiring replacement on multiple occasions binding of brake components cause severe pull under highway speed braking.

52 Service Brakes problem of the 2021 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 05/27/2021

On may 27, 2021 the brakes failed on my brand new 2021 Toyota trd off-road premium 4runner. I attempted to brake at a stop light, the brake pedal went to the floor and the car did not stop. Luckily no accident occurred and I was able to drive it home (4 miles). No warning lights or messages appeared at all before, during or after the incident. This occurred between 3-4 pm in custer, sd on main street during clear weather. The vehicle was hauled to Toyota dealer in rapid city, sd the next morning, may 28th. They could not duplicate the issue, brakes appeared to work fine. They found no fluid leaks and no computer trouble codes. Dealer says they can't diagnose and fix it unless they can replicate the issue. I asked how brakes can completely fail and then work fine again - they don't know. After this brake failure I have found several other 4runner owners who have experienced this same failure, under similar conditions and speeds. Other owners have also submitted incident reports to NHTSA.

53 Service Brakes problem of the 2014 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 05/12/2021

When applying the brakes, the vehicle / steering wheel shakes "violently". Almost to the point that it is hard to hold on to the steering wheel. And if I'm driving at highway speeds the vehicle is extremely hard to stop. I have had to swerve around the vehicle in front of me numerous times because my brakes could not stop my vehicle in time. In an attempt to fix this issue I have had a certified mechanic replace the front rotors at 71k miles, 83k miles, 100k miles with the last time being with genuine Toyota rotors. Each time the vehicle will drive great for about 10k miles and than go back to the violent shaking. Even with the last set of genuine Toyota rotors, the violent shaking started after about 15k - 18k miles. Luckily with covid I don't have to drive on the highway much, but even at city speeds it still really shakes. So here I am still looking for a permanent solution to my problem.

54 Service Brakes problem of the 2004 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 05/03/2021

Our 2004 Toyota forerunner with v6 engine was purchased as a used vehicle in 2019 with 106,000 miles on it. Since then, it has developed more and more areas of rust on the frame despite our efforts to mitigate this issue. We have had to repair the frame, suspension, brakes, and wheel bearings. We continuously inspect the undercarriage and continue to discover more and more areas of significant rust/deterioration despite efforts to clean, treat (with paint, rust inhibitors, welding repairs). We are concerned that this deterioration will soon result in a catastrophic failure and possible accident resulting in property damage, injury, or death.

55 Service Brakes problem of the 2014 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 02/23/2021

The vehicle is hard to stop and the brakes are spongy, ive driven a few 4runners and they are all like that and its dangerous. You have to push the pedal to the floor. The engine makes a horrible ticking sound when idling and sounds like the engine is going to blow up.

56 Service Brakes problem of the 2003 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 01/22/2021

The rear tire assembly ripped loose from its mounts under normal driving conditions. . A loud clunk noise. . . . Then . Brakes were lost and the electrical system showed warning lights on dash board. . . Car is not drivable. . . Massive rust at failure points.

57 Service Brakes problem of the 2018 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 01/07/2021

On multiple occasions with speeds varied 35-60mph when brakes were applied vehicle locked up, sometimes pulling to one side, brakes then went to floor not stopping vehicle requiring me to brake again. . Sometimes rolling into traffic. . This started immediately after purchasing the vehicle with only 12 miles on the odometer. I have taken the vehicle in multiple times and told they cannot recreate the issue snd are unable to identify a issue. . What worries me is that I have to potentially get harmed. The vehicle only has 26k miles on it. I am terrified to drive it.

58 Service Brakes problem of the 2008 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 12/11/2020

Vehicle displayed a check engine light due to a non sealing gas cap. This condition also disables the stability control system. Vehicle lost control on wet conditions and was unable to recover due to all traction and stabilization systems being turned off due to a check engine light (faulty gas cap). I have owned the vehicle for 6 years and have put over 80,000 miles on it without incident. Vehicle was in motion traveling the speed limit on a rainy road.

59 Service Brakes problem of the 2020 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 12/01/2020

Unknown but not really a "safety issue" in the true sense of the meaning. Front brakes. Loud squeal from brakes under cold climate conditions. Dealership has inspected but nothing found. Mentioned NHTSA # 10190453 & TSB #t-tt-0636-20 rev to the service manager but they stated that there is/was no official "TSB" for brake squeal issue on my vehicle. I believe they were referring to a Toyota "t-sb-#######", rather than the "t-tt-0636-20 rev". I did not get any info from dealership since no official "TSB" is published?.

60 Service Brakes problem of the 2020 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 11/13/2020

While slowly slowing the vehicle down, the brake pedal went completely to the floor and lost all braking. As soon as pedal is brought back up and pumped once or twice, brakes regained function. No warning or safety lights went off. This has occurred 3 different times with 2 different drivers.

61 Service Brakes problem of the 2007 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 10/30/2020

The battery died unexpectedly (about 3 years old) and when we replaced it and tried to drive it, there was a loud continuous beep from the dash and no brakes. We replaced the abs fuse, which blew again immediately. We had to have it towed to the shop and it was confirmed it was the brake module. This exact issue just happened with our 2013 camry and it was replaced under a manufacturer warranty. I drive my kids in this car. We could have died.

62 Service Brakes problem of the 2020 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 09/21/2020

Brakes are not functioning properly, the pedal goes way down to the floor before engaging any brakes. At idle the brakes seem to function fine, after driving at about 10mph the brakes go back to not working again. Dealership says the brakes are "normal" and I was told to drive it home even though it was still having the issue. Transmission is not shifting properly either, it gets stuck at 4000-5000 rpm sometimes and then shifts into the next gear. The braking issue occurred even worse going down a hill at 55mph right before it went in for service.

63 Service Brakes problem of the 2006 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 09/13/2020

Just recently I have noticed that when I apply the brake pedal it "sticks" takes ( when driving) couple seconds to resume it original position and I can hear a click. I am taking it to my mechanic to ensure is not critical. Just wanted to know if there is a recall on this. Also, since approximately 2014 the original manufacture paint have gradually being deteriorating to the point which the whole body needs a new paint job. Specifically, the paint have completed faded on most parts of the body, the clear coat is completely peeling off. I am the only owner of this vehicle and I have taken good care of it, only 125 k registered.

64 Service Brakes problem of the 2004 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 05/19/2020

Truck has been well cared for and has 330k miles on it. Always clean and maintained properly by myself and previous owners. Frame is showing signs of excessive rust in the front between the wheels and at almost all of the welded areas. Some areas of frame are coming off in chunks as it appears to be rotting from the inside out. This is also affecting fuel/brake likes as well as suspension components. Pictures can be sent upon request. Family has the car at the moment.

65 Service Brakes problem of the 2003 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 02/11/2020

While driving my abs, break, vsc trac and vsc off light came on solid. It was all accompanied by an alarm. I was in heading down a hill in the snow. Right after the alerts came on I had a hard break pedal with no movement and no breaks. I was not able to use the emergency break as in snow that would not have helped. I have done some research and this has happened to multiple people online and its concerning that if abs stops/faults you lose all ability to break at all.

66 Service Brakes problem of the 2020 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 01/06/2020

Every time I push the brake pedal, it makes a hissing sound. There is a electronic noise after the hissing sound. This is annoying and it makes me feel nauseous.

67 Service Brakes problem of the 2019 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 01/01/2020

General brake use. When pressing to the brakes the pedal has to be pressed on all the way to the floor before the car begins to stop.

68 Service Brakes problem of the 2006 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 12/03/2019

The frame is so rusted everywhere that it is unsafe to drive. One huge hole is completely broken through both sides of the frame and the bottom plate has cracked through. I have a highly reputable welding shop set to repair and patch this but I feel Toyota needs to take care of this before it costs me everything.

69 Service Brakes problem of the 2004 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 10/26/2019

Chassis, brakes and all under carriage of 2004 Toyota 4 runner is rusted. Soon the car will not pass inspection. I do not live in a salt water zone. My car has never driven through salt water. I have 71,000 miles on the car. The brakes were so rusted that I had to replace them. The car will be too dangerous to drive soon.

70 Service Brakes problem of the 2006 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 10/18/2019

The breaks pulse when your stopping and there have been two instances when I experienced the breaks unexpectedly went out or slipped. . . It's hard to explain exact feeling but it was scary. The traction control light came on when I was at a stop sign at a slight hill and the breaks made a strange noise this happened twice however the light only came on the one time. Then while driving the abs, traction, break, and another light all came on at once. This was just random while driving normally. About 20min later they went out. Also while setting at the light or being stopped while in great the car pushes forward while the break is depressed. These things fave been random when the breaks felt as if I had lost them I was turning a corner and stepped on the breaks while in the turn they made a slight noise and I let up when I felt as if I was losing them then depressed again. The second time it happened I was in a normal straight road and depressed the breaks and again it felt as if I had lost them. . . I jerked a little as it scared me being in traffic then I let up and depress them again and if felt normal. Again it has been totally random. Also my tire pressure light comes on quite frequently and I keep losing a little pressure in all tires.
