1 Electrical System problem of the 2022 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 09/01/2025

Pre-collision system malfunction, hybrid system malfunction, awd system malfunction suddenly when restarting the vehicle. Towed to Toyota of downtown la dealership. Toyota of downtown la service tells me that the cpu on my relative new Sienna 2022 was fried from jump start when Sienna starting-battery was low. It was done by a aaa professional, I doubt that is the reason for the fried cpu. I believe Toyota engineers would not design/allow the cpu vulnerable to being fried from a jump start. This is a horrific design flaw if it is this way. This happens now, just 6 months after the 3 year warranty coverage. Toyota of downtown la service is telling me it is going to cost me $2900 to replace this cpu. I find this unacceptable.

6 Electrical System problem of the 2023 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 05/14/2025

Multiple times this has been an issue. I stepped on the break and the car essentially leaps forward typically when going up down or straight. In November 2024 it happened while going up a hill slowly and I bumped into the vehicle ahead of me. My vehicle had no damage, but the car in front of me had to get a new skid plate and my insurance doubled because of it. Since the incident in November 2024, my car has unintentionally accelerated intermittently. Finally, April 2025 this happened my car started shaking jolted forward, engine revving, and then my check engine light came on then immediately contacted my local dealership and scheduled an appointment to get my car in. They have had my vehicle since then and have said it is not safe to give it back to me so I am currently driving a loaner vehicle.

7 Electrical System problem of the 2015 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 04/02/2025

I have had this car for 7 years. Started having issues a year ago and despite bringing it to Toyota 2x, they cannot tell me what the issue is. I will be driving on a regular flat paved road when the car will suddenly brake and pull me towards the side of the road. I get the abs code sometimes and also the slip indicator light. I've explained this each x I've brought it in and they have told me it's due to me "driving too fast" or "accidentally having my foot on the brake. " lol I am a typical soccer mom and drive conservatively and don't brake when I don't have to. It will do it on curving roads as well as straight roads. When this happens, it is terrifying! I have gone to different mechanics as well and no one can determine this issue. I've replaced the abs sensors on this and am still having this issue. I don't know what else to do, as this is unsafe and unsafe to the extent that I no longer allow my 17 year old to drive it. Please help!!!!!!!!.

8 Electrical System problem of the 2024 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 02/17/2025

Van purchased new October 2024. On two separate occasions, one in late 2024 and next today, [xxx], when pulling into street from a stop, there is no throttle response. You push the accelerator at varying pressure and no response for 2-3 seconds. This is a severe safety issue as it could cause an accident with oncoming traffic. No error lights illuminated on dash. Have seen other complaints on NHTSA website and social media as well. Will take to dealer but reporting a major safety issue. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

9 Electrical System problem of the 2022 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 01/29/2025

The complaint was the failure mode of a no start condition while traveling. The issue was related to partial or improper function of the dsm which caused a drain on the battery and battery cell damage requiring full replacement. The fix was a software update to prevent recurrence which cost several hundred dollars (according to the Toyota service bulletin or TSB-0089) along with approx $200 for diagnostic analysis. The TSB work would have been covered if we had not exceeded 36,000 miles. We had the vehicle for 3 years and 1 month. I do not understand the mileage impact to the coverage of a firmware update as this was related to a no start condition and could have occurred when we stopped at a rest stop area as we were traveling across country at the time. I am very disappointed with the failure and the impact of getting several jump starts for our vehicle as well as the couple days waiting to get scheduled into a dealership and 4 hours to get fixed.

11 Electrical System problem of the 2023 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 01/07/2025

The vehicle has a standard installation of a kick sensor for the rear hatch. I purchased the vehicle used and was able to start the vehicle and drive it for a period of time hoping to charge up the 12v battery. However, upon stopping the vehicle I could not restart it. Even after repeated jumpstart and driving the vehicle for over 45 minutes, the 12 v battery could not restart the car. I read about a similar issue with 2022 Toyota vehicles and so I followed the directions to disable the kick sensor. I then jumpstarted the car, drove it around and I found I could restart the car even after a short drive. I left the vehicle sitting in my driveway for two days and I could still restart the vehicle. I believe the 2023 Toyota Sienna has the same issue as the 2022 model and the kick sensor needs to be replaced so it doesn’t drain the 12v battery when the sensor gets dirty. I live in the midwest and this happened during January when there was snow and slush on the streets.

12 Electrical System problem of the 2025 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 01/05/2025

Drivers and passengers front doors make the sound as if they unlock and lock. The manual lock lever will flip as well however the doors will not unlock. This happens randomly both while trying to exit the vehicle and enter. When locked inside you have to crawl over the console to get to a door that functions . This is a major concern if you are in an accident and cannot exit the vehicle. Dealer look at my vehicle but could not duplicate it. I have a video of this when it happens.

15 Electrical System problem of the 2022 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 09/18/2024

While stopping at traffic light behind other cars and braking on slight downslope the brakes let off for a second or two, then re-engaged. Felt like when you hit an icy patch or oil spot on pavement. The 2022 vehicle is under 3 years old and has 10,539 miles on it and this was first time this has occurred.

17 Electrical System problem of the 2023 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 08/09/2024

Passenger side sliding door randomly opens even when car is in the locked mode and when parked. It has happened 4 times. Toyota blames my chair lift and the mobility works blames Toyota. Service has not been able to recreate the problem since it is intermittent and has documented the complaint. However the only way to insure it doesn’t happen is to shut off the power to the doors making them difficult to open. This has only happened while parked but is a safety issue when not at home in the garage.

18 Electrical System problem of the 2017 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 07/26/2024

20 Electrical System problem of the 2021 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 02/01/2024

At the begining of 2024, I received a recall letter from Toyota regarding the airbag malfunction. I was told to wait for a remedy by q3 of 2024. I patiently waited and was very anxious driving my vehicle. I recently did talk to my local dealer during my maintenance and they stated that they do not have any information regarding that and that I should call Toyota. I tried calling Toyota and was instructed to wait as they still have not got a remedy and that if I was getting in any accidents Toyota will be fully responsible. I bought the car to drive for my safety an this is the level of safety that I am getting. Thus I am here looking for help on how I can get this matter resolved as driving knowing that airbag has failed on the passenger side is very unsafe.

21 Electrical System problem of the 2020 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 12/20/2023

Spontaneous and random: blinkers come on, radio volume goes up or down when turning the other way, carplay usb shuts off and on, hiccups when accelerating (when eco kicks on/in)…everything points to an electrical/computer issue. Purchased used from a dealership and noticed these issues after the 3-day return window.

22 Electrical System problem of the 2021 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 12/08/2023

1. The vehicle displayed the rear cross traffic alert (rcta) warning light along with the blind spot monitoring (bsm) warning light on the dash board. The vehicle was brought to Toyota of ann arbor for an inspection. After inspecting the vehicle, Toyota of ann arbor reported that road debris (snow, dirt, mud, etc. ) was trapped between the bumper and the sensor resulting in the sensor to malfunction. The vehicle has been taken through a car wash with an underbody wash option, but due to the position of the sensor, the sensor is not able to be cleaned from a car wash. The sensor can only be cleaned by removing the bumper. But when the bumper is removed, the sensors have to be re-calibrated and the re-calibration of the sensors can only be completed by trained professionals. 2. Due to the malfunctioning sensor, the driver's safety is put at risk by not being alerted of obstructions (both objects or persons) behind the vehicle, nor oncoming cross traffic, nor detecting vehicles in blind spots. This could cause collisions or worse, fatality, due to the malfunction sensor not alerting the driver. 3. This vehicle has been able to reproduced the problem multiple times and as mentioned above, the vehicle was inspected and confirmed by the Toyota of ann arbor dealership. The dealership (Toyota of ann arbor) mentioned that there are multiple reports of this issue on other vehicles of the same make and model. 4. The vehicle or component has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representative, or others. 5. No prior symptoms were seen or displayed prior to the failure.

23 Electrical System problem of the 2022 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 12/05/2023

Our 2022 Toyota Sienna would not start after arriving at a doctor’s appointment. Contacted active Toyotacare for towing - no one showed up. Called a friend to jump start van; consulted the owners’ manual and performed jump. Van started but could only be driven about 100 yds in parking lot. Van stopped; multiple error codes showed up when trying to jump start again. Toyotacare didn’t call again or show up so we ended up paying for tow service to the dealership - haley Toyota of richmond. Dealership checked vehicle; concluded the battery had an internal weld problem but that the jump start was not performed properly even though the manual was followed. There are no jump start instructions in the engine compartment. We were given a tech bulletin instruction sheet with more accurate information. We were advised the engine control unit was burned out, causing all the error codes and would not be covered under warranty because “we” did not perform the jump start correctly. The cost of repair is almost $1100. 00 but the battery, which started all the issues, is covered under warranty. The tech instruction sheet indicates to me that Toyota was aware of the inadequate jump start instructions and failed to inform customers of the possible issues. The tech instruction sheet we were given is dated April 6, 2022 - one month before we purchased the vehicle. The sheet lists all Toyota hybrid models as affected.

24 Electrical System problem of the 2020 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 10/10/2023

Speakers make an ear piercing loud noise that lasts about a second. If this sound were to occur during travel, could cause distraction leading to harm, or with young kids in the car, possibly damage their ears. This problem has been random and not experienced by a dealership. No warning messages or symptoms to the problem. Problem first appeared 6 months ago.

26 Electrical System problem of the 2008 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 07/15/2023

Issues with vsc. The sensor alarm goes off when driving at more than 50 mph and slightly turning the steering wheel. The car brakes itself and this is dangerous. It happens all the time, it has been more than 5-6 years and we are to the point of not using the car on the freeway to prevent a potential fatal accident. I found posts describing the same issue with this model of Toyota. Car should be recalled to get this fixed.

27 Electrical System problem of the 2023 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 07/07/2023

On July 7, 2023 I paid in full and was given possession of the 7 passenger seating Toyota van. The car has automatic door locking mechanism as part of the electrical system and can be locked from inside the car. The van is used to transport 2 children in car seats who can touch car components. We were given one keyfob by the dealership and we were told that Toyota manufacturer did not have a second keyfob to give at that time; we were told that we would get the second keyfob within a few weeks. We were not told prior to purchasing the car that only one keyfob would be given or else we would not have purchased the car; there was a failure to disclose this. It has now been close to 3 months that we have driven with only one keyfob. With children who can touch inside controls, they could lock themselves inside the van with the windows closed and the single keyfob left inside the car. We do not have a second keyfob to prevent possible deaths and injuries that could occur from the manufacturer's negligence and faulty car electrical system design. Toyota vans aimed at parents with children are unsafe for use when only one keyfob is issued. It is the responsibility of the NHTSA to help protect the safety of these children and parents as Toyota cares more about making a short-term profit from getting the full cash from the sale of the van instead of delaying the sale of the van until both keyfobs are available to purchasers at the time of sale of the vehicle. It is estimated that this is not an isolated incident as my multiple contacts with elmore Toyota dealership and Toyota of America headquarters result being told that it is a "Toyota wide problem with several other purchasers waiting also. " this should be a class action lawsuit with both compensatory damages awarded along with punitive damages to discourage Toyota and other auto manufacturers from placing profits above the safety of children who cannot speak or defend themselves from such gross negligence.

28 Electrical System problem of the 2023 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 07/07/2023

Our family bought a 2023 new Toyota Sienna [VIN 5tderkec2ps168174] on July 7, 2023 paying the full price plus premium dealer markup from elmore Toyota in westminster, orange county, California on January 7, 2023 and only received one keyfob for the 7 seater van. I was told that I would get a second keyfob within 2-3 weeks. I have constantly contacted elmore Toyota and they have said that the keyfob has still not arrived as of December 5th, 2023. As we have three adult drivers using the vans and children who are seated in their car seats in the van, it is imperative that we get our second keyfob as soon as possible. If we were told that we would only get one keyfob and would have to wait over 5 months to get a second keyfob, we would not have bought this vehicle. It is a safety issue as the possibility exists that the single keyfob could be in the car when a child pushes a lock button for the van, there would be no second keyfob to free the trapped children. Please contact me to resolve this risk.

29 Electrical System problem of the 2021 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 07/03/2023

The contact owns a 2021 Toyota Sienna. The contact stated that while his wife was fueling the vehicle, his 5 year old son pressed the automatic rear driver's side sliding door switch and the door opened, bumped and scrapped the fuel door. The contact's wife immediately stopped fueling the vehicle. The contact stated that the vehicle was designed with an automatic door lock that would engage to prevent the rear driver's side sliding door from opening and bumping into the fuel door, when fueling the vehicle; however, the automatic door lock failed to engage. The contact stated that he was concerned that the failure had caused metal fragments intrusion in the fuel tank. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the failure could not be determined. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the dealer for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 49,000.

30 Electrical System problem of the 2015 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 06/03/2023

All interior dome/lights (door side lights, visor mirror lights, all overhead passenger lights, etc) not lighting up at all. Fuse in engine compartment is good. Vehicle has been at auto dealership where originally purchased. Safety concerns are that at night, unable to determine if there has been access by person or if person is actually in vehicle. Vehicle diagnoses was begun on 6/12/2023 and is still in process of issues. Received a call from the service representative on 6/19/2023 that water had accumulated under the fuse box in the engine compartment causing corrosion at the connection of the wire harness to the underside of the fuse box. Initially this caused the the internal lights to fail. There is much more corrosion occurring which will eventually cause a complete electrical failure and possible engine failure/fire. Current recommendation from service manager is to completely replace the wire harness at a cost of $7,000+. Insurance may or may not cover the cost of repair. The insurance adjuster is meeting today with the service manager. In my opinion, this is a serious defect in Toyota Sienna manufacturing, design and materials used.

31 Electrical System problem of the 2021 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 06/02/2023

The breaks give out to a point where you run the risk of running into someone or something. We've visited Toyota 3 times now complaining of this issue yet they just state it's the regenerative breaks and how they operate. Although the breaking never got to this level of safety concern until we reached around 30,000 miles. I filed a complaint with Toyota that resulted in nothing being done. A couple examples would be sitting at a stop light and the breaks release almost causing us to run into the car in front of us. Pulling into daycare trying to stop while pulling into the parking spot and the breaks release. The last one is while going down hills the breaks seem to let go and the vehicle speeds up. It scared my wife so much that we actually sold the vehicle as Toyota deemed it safe. We loved the vehicle but can't risk the safety of our family.

32 Electrical System problem of the 2022 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 04/26/2023

Over the past 18 months, this vehicle has exhibited the following actions approximately 30-40 times. When slowing the vehicle, with brake pressure applied, the vehicle reacts appropriately until, at the slow speed( approximately 5-10 mph) it suddenly accelerates or surges ahead for approximately 1-2 seconds. The has occurred while in the process of turning as well as moving straight ahead. I have taken the vehicle to the dealer of the original sale, shepard's Toyota, thomaston maine, and they have attempted to replicate this action. They were unable to do so. The reported to me that they contacted Toyota engineering and was told, I paraphrase, that when the drive battery is fully charged and the dynamic braking system is still creating a charge, the current is directed to the drive motors, despite the fact that the brake is applied to slow and stop the vehicle. These events have occurred inn the middle of turns, when attempting to stop at crosswalks, and stopping prior to entering a traffic stream. If I had not continued to apply the brake, the vehicle would have, in several case, collided with objects.

The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that the tailgate hydraulic struts needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, however, the failure recurred. The contact stated that she had noticed that the failure had reoccurred at a thirty-degree weather on two occasions. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 140,000.

35 Electrical System problem of the 2006 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 03/27/2023

The vehicle stability control system randomly engages and activates the brakes without cause. This can happen on a gentle curve going under the speed limit. It is very scary and I am afraid it is going to cause an accident. Internet research shows many owners with this issue and no information on the cause or a fix.
