1 Owners/service Manual problem of the 2014 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 10/15/2020

On October 15th at approximately 3:30 pm (CT) my 2014 Toyota Sienna was parked in my driveway with the engine on, unattended, when it moved forward up the slight incline of my driveway, struck another vehicle that was parked in the garage and kept moving forward until it struck the front wall of the garage. Prior to the accident, I had reversed the van out of the garage and left the van ignition on and in park as I exited. I know for certain that the van was in the park position since the automatic locks let me exit the vehicle without having to manually unlock them and the alarms did not sound as I exited. The van also did not roll forward ir backward as I exited. I then walked in front of the van to enter my house through the garage. I was in the house for less than 5 minutes when I heard the loud crash of the van striking the garage wall. My Toyota Sienna was manufactured on June 6, 2014. After the accident I discovered there is an active recall (recall: transmission shift cable/rollaway/fmvss 102) for an issue that causes rollaways effecting cars manufactured between June 17, 2014 through June 24, 2014. I took my van to Toyota expecting my issue to be related to this recall. Toyota had the black box inspected and the transmission inspected and determined they were not liable since they were not able to replicate the issue and did not find any defects. When I took my car in originally the technician stated that there was not a good way to determine if the shift cable was defective and they were simply replacing the part as part of the recall, which my car did not qualify for since it was manufactured 11 days prior. A car should never move itself from the park position and something has to be faulty with the car in order for it to do so.

2 Owners/service Manual problem of the 2009 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 12/17/2019

Both sides power sliding doors had a cable broken that activates automatic door function, it also obstructs manually opening doors creating an egress hazard. Both doors can only be manually opened partial way. Average person enters/exits rear seats with great difficulty due to the sliding door obstruction.

3 Owners/service Manual problem of the 2015 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 11/25/2019

The cable to the passenger side automatic door snapped. The passenger side automatic door is now manual due to exorbitant cost of repairs. It was discovered when the vehicle was stationary.

4 Owners/service Manual problem of the 2010 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 08/29/2019

Both back sliding door cables snapped. Have been advised the motors siezed causing the cables to snap. Neither door works. Driver's side door can only open 6 inches. This is a safety hazard in event of emergency. My children can not get out of the car and can not operate the one door able to manually open. Fix has been estimated at $1900 per door. Toyota knows this is an issue. They issued a customer warrantee enhancement for it but it has expired. They refuse to reopen it. There has been a recall for this on the 2004-2009 model year and currently a recall for this for 2011-2018 models but not the 2010. There are hundreds of Toyota Sienna's on the road with this issue and it is completely unsafe and totally unacceptable that Toyota refuses to take responsibility for the 2010's and cover the costs to fix the problem.

5 Owners/service Manual problem of the 2011 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 07/11/2019

My driver side sliding door will not open by either pressing the buttons or trying to manually open it.

6 Owners/service Manual problem of the 2004 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 06/26/2019

Started having problem with the doors on the van the front door was the first problem with a failed door cheek causing the door not to be able to be opened had to force it open and remove the door cheek due to a weld that had broken away from the door is why it failed and the second was the power sliding door on the passenger side the door quite working and then when switched into the manual mode I was unable to get the door to close or it would close them come back open it took almost a hour to get it to close and stay closed. This being the car I transport my kids in that's a big safety issue to me knowing the door may not work or may not say closed while driving please help.

7 Owners/service Manual problem of the 2014 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 05/20/2019

With the car in park and attempting to open the driver side sliding door, it refuses to open and stops abruptly during the slide only opening a few inches (not enough to render the opening usable) because the fuel door is not sufficiently closed to depress the push button that tells the van's system that the fuel door is fully shut. Thus the sliding door stops abruptly (as programmed) to avoid a collision with an open fuel door. However, that is not the case here. Upon further inspection it is noticed that the spring on the push button has such a severe stiffness that the fuel door's hinge system was not designed durable enough to compensate for the outward load exerted by the push button when the fuel door is closed and locked. For this reason, the fuel door hinge, over time, experiences a fatigue failure at the top of the hinge only. That is to say, the lower half of the hinge remains connected and operable while the top half of the hinge shears in twain. Now sheared, the fuel door is pushed freely away by the push button and the top forward most corner of the fuel door protrudes past the van's profile by half an inch or more. It is the failure of the fuel door hinge, created by the overdesign of the spring on the push button, that allows the door to not open properly despite the driver doing everything to keep the path of the door clear. Unfortunately, for embarking, this renders the sliding access point as difficult as you have to manually push against the fuel door when opening the sliding door until it halfway open. For disembarking this is the safety hazard, as there is no way to "rig" the system to operate from the inside and during emergency egress from the vehicle. If the passenger door is blocked or broken as the result of a hazard or crash, occupants in the rear of the vehicle can become trapped inside being forced to climb into the front seat or trunk.

8 Owners/service Manual problem of the 2014 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 01/15/2019

While stationary, the sliding door cable snapped while it was automatically opening and has impeded the sliding door to even open manually which leads to safety concerns as the door will not open up as the cable impedes in its way.

9 Owners/service Manual problem of the 2008 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 10/10/2018

My Sienna side door cannot open. My son would not be able to escape the vehicle if a problem in an accident. Dealer said there is no recall but the door cannot even be opened manually. This would be a $1500-2000 repair which as a single mom is not an option for me. I do not feel something as significant as ability to escape a vehicle should fall on the consumer.

10 Owners/service Manual problem of the 2013 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 07/22/2018

The passenger side cable attached to the sliding door has stripped, causing an internal jam, disallowing the door from closing fully. Even manually closing the doors does not work, and the door is open roughly 60% of the way. The van is still able to drive with the door open.

11 Owners/service Manual problem of the 2011 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 06/06/2018

Power sliding passenger door cable rusted apart, therefore making the door completely unfunctioning. It cannot be used manually either.

12 Owners/service Manual problem of the 2009 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 02/28/2018

The rear left sliding door does not lock when shut. Even when used in power mode or manual. It will slide open when driving down the road especially on turns. Reading online it seems to be a common problem with this vehicle. The door lock actuator will not secure the door in a lock position no matter what you do. This makes the vehicle unsafe to drive for the fear that somebody will fall out while driving.

13 Owners/service Manual problem of the 2013 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 01/07/2018

We experienced a very cold arctic blase in early January 2018. The van was in our garage. When I tried to oped the left hand rear sliding door, it would not open. After a second attempt, it did open but then reversed. Eventually, it would not close and latch, so we did not drive it that day. I had to slam it shut in order for the interior lights to so out so not to run down the battery. I did drive it a few days later, and the door came open when I made a right hand turn. When I would stop, it shut, but did not latch. I set up an appointment with the dealer I bought the vehicle from after explaining the problem and they said they would order the parts for the recall repair. Later that day, dealer said there was also a problem with the closing motor and that was not covered by the recall repair. It only covered the wiring harness and junction box. I got a ride from work to the dealer and they offered me a loaner while they did more evaluations of the problem. Later the next day, I was told the repairs would cost $1300 and would not be covered under the recall. I felt that the failure of the cables and the fuse being overloaded probably contributed to the motor failing. I then told them just to disable the power function and we would just open and close manually because I could not afford that repair at this time. Later that day. The service adviser left me a voice mail that they could not make the repair nor repair the latch and the vehicle was ready for me to pick up. I call back on Saturday morning to speak to service manager, but he was off. I called back on Monday, but had to leave a voice message. I am very concerned that even if I could afford the repair this time, it will probably happen to the other door at some point as well. There seems to be quite a history of this problem going back several years and it's more of a design issue.

15 Owners/service Manual problem of the 2014 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 10/14/2017

At right around 50,000 miles, the cable on one of my power sliding doors snapped. This I have already filed a complaint for. But then at around 52,000 miles, the cable on the other power sliding door snapped. Now both doors have to be used manually, which would be fine except for the doors are so incredibly heavy that if the car is on any sort of hill, my children can barely get the doors open because they are so heavy. On top of that, they don't always lock open when being used manually. A child would easily be crushed by these doors if they lost control of them or if another child let go of the door. This is an incredibly dangerous hazard that Toyota should fix.

17 Owners/service Manual problem of the 2005 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 07/27/2017

Cpsc:I currently own 2 2005 Toyota Sienna minivans. I've had one for at least 8 years (now has ~212,000 miles and the other I purchased in the last month (has ~127,000). The engine in my original van has been wonderful however currently you cannot open either of the sliding side doors, with the automatic option or manually. The automatic feature broke.

18 Owners/service Manual problem of the 2013 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 06/19/2017

The power sliding doors would not open by pushing the button. The power button was in the on position. In order to open the door we had to try it manually and when that was done the cable broke. The following week the other power sliding door cable broke as well. After the cable broke you could not even open the door manually with the power button in the off position. This is a safety issue as to if a child or person was in that seat and would be unable to get out in the case of an emergency. The vehicle was in a stationary position when this happened. Now the one door will become unlodged and open while driving down the highway. I do know that there is a safety recall on that portion of it but I believe that the cables for the power doors should be included because I do believe that they are a cause to this.

19 Owners/service Manual problem of the 2016 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 05/27/2017

Toyota Sienna faulty power sliding doors. The vehicle was parked. When we tried to open the door, the cable snapped. Then we won't be able to close it. We had to cut the remaining cable behind the sliding wheel to manually close the door.

20 Owners/service Manual problem of the 2010 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 05/08/2017

Power sliding doors jammed in the closed (or partially open position) as the door cable got hung up in the sliding mechanism. Both doors of our vehicle are now affected. Driver side sliding door failed to open fully in Jan 2017 - it opened about 4 inches and would stop. Passenger side sliding door failed to open at all in may 2017, it would move a fraction of an inch when trying to open and then get jammed. The van has seen moderate use, and the doors were opened with the automatic mechanism (used the button) over 99% of the time. The wear on the door opening mechanism was not caused by inappropriate manual opening. After the problem, in both cases the only way to be able to open the doors was to physically break the guide cables - which was done from outside of the vehicle. It is unlikely to be done from inside the vehicle due to how the person would need to stand and the strength they could generate, especially during an emergency event. Fix for the problem is over $1000 for each door. Remedy for me is that I cut the broken cables and we open the doors manually now. I believe there is a recall that covers this problem for 2004-2007 Siennas, but has not been extended to cover the same model for years 2008-2010. Snippet of this certain 2004 to 2007 model year Sienna vehicles extension of warranty coverage for power sliding door cable assembly this concerns the cable assembly, not the latch assembly.

21 Owners/service Manual problem of the 2008 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 04/02/2017

Cable on driver side power sliding door snapped while opening the door when parked. Door would only open a few inches as cable was stuck in the mechanism. I had to close it to drive home then it would not open at all after I got home, even after I disconnected the motor with the button under the dash and tried to operate manually. The door is completely non-functional now. I am concerned now since I can't move the door if it is truly latched and may come open while driving, also it is a safety issue that if the vehicle was in an accident and I couldn't open the other door for some reason that anyone in the back would not be able to get out quickly. The motor was working (I can hear it running) and I can see the snapped corroded end of the cable so I know it is definitely the cable and not the motor or the door latch. There is a big piece of cable hanging out the back of the door near the rear window.

22 Owners/service Manual problem of the 2014 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 02/27/2017

I've been having issues for over a year now with the drivers side rear sliding door not closing all the way. It would close all but the last 6 inches or so and then re-open. I took it to the dealership 3 times and they said they found no issues, but greased the door. 2 weeks ago the door would not open or close at all (even manaullly - thus the reason for my complaint). I turned the automatic feature off and could not get the door to open at all!!! major safety issue! I looked and noticed that the cable had snapped. I took it to the dealership again and they replaced the cable and said that was the problem with the door not closing properly too. That cost me $320. The next day the same issue returned of the door not closing all the way. I took it back in and they diagnosed it again in less than a minute as the roller on the hinge. They agreed to replace it at no charge to me, but did not let me see the claimed bad part. My major concern is that this door would not open at all even in the manual mode and that the door consistently would not close all the way. All these symptoms occurred with the vehicle fully stopped and in park.

23 Owners/service Manual problem of the 2007 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 01/03/2017

I currently have a 2007 Toyota Sienna with 130k miles. My car is good condition and has been very reliable over the last several years. Recently both the drivers and passenger sliding doors stopped working and the wire that is part of the door mechanism popped and is now hanging from the back windows. I am at this time unable to open either door and there is no way to manually open the doors. I have children and they are having to climb from the front to the read. There was no indicator that this was becoming an issue. It as if Toyota was aware of this problem, however they are not addressing it without charing outrageous prices. The dealer claimed wear and term, however my door may be opened and closed 1 to 2 times per day, if that. The response was very nonchalant as if was not a big deal. I am very disappointed in the issue and more disappointed in the response from my dealer, whom I have been dealing with since 1997. Toyota really needs to address this issue. This is not only a mechanical malfunction, it is a safety issue.

24 Owners/service Manual problem of the 2014 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 01/01/2017

Vehicle is a handicap vehicle equipped with electric ramp. Problems with sliding doors unlocking, not locking or doors opening making it an extreme safety based. Interim recall received recommendation received in November to operate doors in manual mode is unacceptable with ramp and handicapped drivers. Contacted Toyota corporate and would not provide assistance or accommodation.

25 Owners/service Manual problem of the 2013 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 11/22/2016

On November 22, 2016, a recall was announced for the sliding door operations. We then disabled the door operations pursuant to the recall notice and had the dealer likewise further disable the door operation. More than 7 months later, there is no remedy and the door motor still runs when closing the door which, seemingly, is part of the problem so our steps coupled with the steps of the dealer, leave us in no better of a place with doors and a hatch that require manual closing which is very heard from my children.

26 Owners/service Manual problem of the 2015 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 11/14/2016

Power sliding doors, both driver and passenger, malfunctioned. While in park, the doors were open, when we pressed to button to close them, the doors came partly closed, then opened back up, then tried to close, then tried to open. Regardless of what we did, the door would not operate correctly. Eventually, we turned the switch to manual and were able to close the doors. Took the van to dealer. They said it was the motor and replaced it. That was 11-14-2016. Now 1-4-2017, the doors are not working properly again. And when I called the dealer, they never mentioned the recent recall. Neither have I received any notification from Toyota regarding the dangerous recall. I happened to hear about it from a family member. I spoke with the dealer about it, they said call Toyota. I called Toyota, they said that I would eventually get something in the mail. It is hard to believe that a manufacturer would be so irresponsible about major safety issues. Once I looked online, I found that the sliding door problem has been going on for years. How is it legal for a company to purposely continue to endanger people's lives?.

27 Owners/service Manual problem of the 2005 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 09/13/2016

Passenger side automatic sliding door stopped working 5 years ago so we used it manually. Door stopped working manually 2 years ago. Driver side sliding door was not automatic. One year ago began not working intermittently. Now you cannot open the door from the inside. This posses a great safety hazard. Passengers in the rear two rows of the van cannot open either door in an emergency.

28 Owners/service Manual problem of the 2006 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 08/15/2016

In August 2016, the cable to our power sliding passenger rear door broke while on vacation. Up to this point the door made a little "groaning" sound when opened but it never failed to work. After the cable broke, we were able to open the door manually for about 1 week, then the door stopped opening. After researching the internet, this is a common problem. Toyota has offered a fix to vehicles 9 years or younger for specific year vehicles. Ours is too old. If this is a common problem, why is the replacement of this cable prior to breakage a not required maintenance item? I feel this is a safety issue since if we are ever in an accident that requires a fast exit from the vehicle, anyone sitting in the third row will have a difficult exit.

29 Owners/service Manual problem of the 2006 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 08/14/2016

The automatic sliding passenger door jammed approximately halfway open and could no longer be opened or closed. The incident occurred while the vehicle was stationary at a rest stop along I-87. I removed the door panel and observed that the protective plastic coating on the actuator cable had worn off and the bare cable appeared to have cut through one of the plastic pulleys which completely disintegrated thus jamming the door. I had to cut the cable and remove the remnants of the pulley in order to be able to manually operate the door so I could continue driving home with my family. No one was harmed as a result of the incident.

30 Owners/service Manual problem of the 2008 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 07/21/2016

The passenger sliding door's pulley cable snapped while performing a routing automated door opening operation. There where some grinding noises while the door attempted to open. The vehicle was parked on a level surface. Upon inspection of finding out what happened, the braided cable appeared faulty and was corroded. Meanwhile the loss in tension resulted in loose cable preventing the door from opening and closing properly. The cable was then cut but the excess cable is hanging out of the vehicle. The door is now opened manually but it is having difficulty holding itself when opened. I do have three young children under the age of 7 who frequently use these doors. My concern is that the door opening is not was I purchased/expect and second the cost of repair is very high ($1200-$2500) when hearing this issue has become more frequent in the last two years as these vehicles are surpassing their warranty expectancy. I do not have any photos but still have the faulty cable if pictures are requested at a later time.

31 Owners/service Manual problem of the 2014 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 06/01/2016

Started having issues with left & right sliding doors not closing on 2014 Toyota Sienna roughly 18 months after purchase. Later received a recall notice for the instrument panel junction block and new wire harnesses as well as warranty enhancements for sliding door front and rear lock assemblies. Brought in to white river Toyota in white river junction, vt for repair and was told that all that could be done was the recall item as they could not duplicate the sliding door issue not closing. Have continued to have this problem and have had to close doors manually. Brought in again to have repaired approximately a year later and was led to believe the warranty enhancement repairs would be done only to be told that they needed to order the parts and that the technician recommended the replacement of both sliding door hinges at a cost of $758. The extracare warranty that I had purchased when I bought the vehicle will not cover the hinges as these were not covered when the warranty was purchased. This vehicle is a 2014 and I started having these issues within two years of purchase. Why isn't Toyota stepping up to the plate and fixing these issues? these problems are well documented and Toyota supposedly prides themselves on customer satisfaction. Are they waiting until these doors can't be closed at all and/or fall off before they will be forced to fix? I will never purchase another Toyota or recommend a Toyota for the simple fact that customer satisfaction and safety does not appear to be their #1 priority.

"takata recall" NHTSA reference id 16v340 the Sienna VIN (xxx) is actually in switzerland. 33 Owners/service Manual problem of the 2004 Toyota Sienna

Failure Date: 03/01/2016

My automatic sliding door cable has frayed. I can't use the door now. Somehow I magically got it shut, but now it is completely locked down to try and protect the kids and to keep the van in a usable state (obviously you can't drive around a vehicle whose door won't close). The vehicle was stationary when this happened. It was over a couple of days from when I first heard a strange noise when the door was moving to when it stopped functioning altogether. The last time I tried to close it it had been opened on accident by a babysitter who didn't know and we had to keep pressing the manual open/close button continually and inch it to a closed position, because it kept trying to reopen the door. I have 6 kids, 5 in car seats. I really need to be able to access the babies car seats without climbing into the van. This is ridiculous. We are down to one door. Also it is completely unsafe in the event that an accident were to occur. As a side note the motor seems to be working fine. The cables are the problem.

Failure Date: 09/06/2015

Driver side automatic sliding door failed to operate after the cable snapped. Cable did not cause injury but this is a potential hazard. Now the door operates in manual mode but if the van is on an incline, the door will close rapidly with significant force. This is a danger to young children.
