The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Tacoma. The contact started that the ignition and the air bag warning indicator illuminated until the engine was turned off. There was a recall associated with the failure under NHTSA campaign id number 12v092000 (air bags:frontal). The authorized dealer stated that the part would not be available for three weeks and the vehicle must remain at the dealer during that time frame. The contact was displeased to know that the vehicle had to remain at the dealer after waiting for five weeks to schedule an appointment for the recall repair. The manufacturer was notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 70,000.

Airbag light on. Had vehicle diagnosed by independent mechanic. Said vehicle needs new spiral cable (clock spring). Called dealer for recall information and was told that there is a pending recall out sometime this summer 2012 but if wanted to repair now would be at my expense. Why no action on known problem. There are even ads on ebay to repair the spiral cable and/or connectors. One such vendor has done hundreds of repairs.

Air bag light on, horn not working. Dealer said defective clock spring in steering column.

On it and have found a lot of people have been having this problem. Going by the info. Found on line, from google to newsgroups it seems that the spiral cable in the steering column is failing at a alarming rate. The Toyota dealers are just charging for diagnostics and not admitting a product defect. I am taking mine to the dealer and is $117. 00 just to diagnose it. . And I know this takes them 10 min or less to hook it up to the computer and get the error codes printed. This dealers are charging $90 to $120 just for the diagnostic. . And it seems the repairs can go from $300 up to $800. 00. Srs (air bag) issues should be covered for the life of a vehicle or srs (air bags) should be optional! if it is a required part like a seat belt Toyota should cover the part free. Please take time to review my compliant and those of others.

At around 48,000 miles, airbag light came on. Took it to Toyota dealer and was diagnosed at broken spiral cable. Total cost to fix was 460 dollars with labor. Seems to be a common problem with 06 Tacoma.

The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer had not been made aware of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 64,950. Updated 12/06/lj the consumer stated the diagnostic codes indicated the spiral cable failed which initiates the driver air bag. Updated 12/16/11.

My 08 Toyota Tacoma has airbag light on and dealer wants to charge 490. 00 to replace spiral cable. This is a safety problem caused by a faulty part there should be a recall!.

Air bag light came on while driving at approx: 76,000 miles and has stayed on. . . No crash, bump or anything. Was on smooth highway driving.

Vehicle was recalled for spiral cable which could result in airbag light staying on. Toyota has a problem with the airbag and are using the spiral cable as an excuse to get you in and then charge you for fixing their faulty airbag. Toyota should be recalling the vehicles for faulty airbags not spiral cables. The more investigation I do the more I can see that many others have the same problem and are being ignored by Toyota.

Drivers side air bag light remains on. Diagnosed as a failed spiral cable. Toyota motors through their dealer ship refuses to acknowledge any responsibility (romamo Toyota, syracuse NY ) internet research indicates that this a common problem amongst Toyota vehicles and especially 2006 Toyota Tacoma's this is a safety issue. Why has this not been a recall item?.

My air bag light went on for no reason - no service or impact to trigger the sensor. I paid a Toyota dealer $112 for a diagnostic check and they found codes b1660 & b1801, requiring me to replace the spiral cable. The cost was about $570 before tax. I did not have the money to do the repair, so the air bag light is still on. The Toyota representative told me that the air bag would not function in a crash if this was not repaired. This is a defective part and should be replaced by Toyota whether I am under warranty or not because it is a safety feature of the vehicle, and other mechanics will not work on air bags.

My airbag light came on when driving one day. As I did research, it seems that the spiral cable in the steering wheel in the newer Tacomas are faulty. There are entirely too many of these things going bad. A simple search on google for Tacoma spiral cable brings up scores of people with these things going bad, some at 30-40 thousand miles! it is rediculous that Toyota has had this ongoing problem and done nothing! after all the crap about unintended acceleration and floormats I would expect them to address this issue, but apparently safety systems are't that important to them. Not only do they have chronic failures, but the dealerships are more than happy to charge $100 to diagnose the problem, even though almost every case is the spiral cable. The total bill comes to anywhere from 4-500 dollars depending on the dealership, for a repair that shouldn't happen in the first place. Normal wear and tear is one thing, but since when is there normal wear and tear on air bags?.

No significant events occurred. Air bag light on 2007 Toyota Tacoma came on briefly after start up, turned off as usual, then came back on and would not go off. Took to dealership; they say this is a spiral cable issue - cost to fix is $400. 00. Truck has approximately 77000 miles on it; have never had airbag issues with any vehicle in my life!.

At 83,000 miles my air bag light came on and I was quite concerned. While looking in the owens manual all I found was “if light is continually illuminated bring to the dealer immediately�. So I took my 2005 Toyota Tacoma into the dealership and they charged me $60 to diagnose the code. Once diagnosed, I was informed that the spiral cable needs to be replaced at an estimate to replace the part at $420. I asked the sales person in the service department how did it break. To my surprise she said “ I don’t know but it seams like almost every 2005 and 2006 Tacoma that reaches 75,000 miles has this problem�. At this point I can not afford the cable as I had to replace the water pump at the cost of $600. So this means that I get to sacrifice my safety until I can save up the money. This comes from a 30 year old who at 15 years of age almost lost his brother due to a broken back and a torn aorta in a car accident. Nissan did a recall on the lap belt he was wearing 3 days after the accident. He was in the hospital for 6 months and survived from a 2% chance of living. Please help!!!!.

114,00 miles on 2006 dealer maintained Toyota Tacoma ext. Cab 2wd 4cyl. Srs airbag light came on. Diagnosed at Toyota dealer spiral cable failure. They want $750 to replace the cable. It's a safety item and should be covered for the life of the truck. Toyota has a problem, there has been enough complaints filed,time to do something.

The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that the squib cable needed to be replaced. The vehicle was in the process of being repaired. The failure mileage was 100,000 and the current mileage was 110,000.

Copy of letter to Toyota concerning a defective spiral cable and electronic circuit; feels this part should have been repaired and covered under a special safety warranty or recall; enclosed automotive part fwd to nvs-200 the consumer stated the air bag light illuminated 12 days after being at the dealership to have a recall problem repaired. The dealer informed the consumer he would have to pay $88 to diagnose the problem. The dealer stated the problem was due to a broken spiral cable and electronic circuit underneath the horn which would cost $ 496 in addition to the $ 88.

The air bag light in the dash board came on at about 48,000 miles. There was no crash or any related incident that could have caused it to come on. There should be a recall for this factory related defect. I hope this complaint will help for a future recall or a solution to this problem.

2006 Toyota Tacoma double cab, v-6, 4wd. I bought this truck new from palmer's Toyota in mobile, al. At 72,000 miles, the driver's side airbag light came on. Took the truck in for service and it was determined that the spiral cable in the steering column was bad. The cost to repair is in excess of $500! I chose not to repair at the time - have been driving with the light on for a week now. Service rep said that until repair is made, my airbags were "disabled". It appears that alot of Toyota owners are experiencing this same problem. What are the chances that this could be investigated and possibly Toyota issuing a recall for this?.

Cannot afford to fix at this time. I have no airbag in the event of a collision. This part failed simply from normal turning of the steering wheel. Air bag light came on at 62,000 miles. Dealer determined the spiral cable assembly in the steering wheel failed due to broken wire. This is a safety defect that should never have happened. Dealer said Toyota had no recall or service bulletin regarding this problem and they were aware of other failures. Dealer is Toyota of newport.

2005 Toyota Tacoma lunges or surges while holding the brake at light. If I don't hold the brake firm it could rear end vehicle in front of me. Dealer says its normal. And charged me to inspect. Airbag light came on dealer told me it was a part in the airbag and wanted 612. 00 to replace stating that it may go off while driving. Causing a crash . Shouldn't a part this critical be covered for life of truck?.

Air bag light stays on. I have owned 5 Toyotas and my air bag light has never come on. Took vehicle to Toyota of redlands, calif on 1/28/2020 for check. They reported that the spiral cable has failed. Cost to replace $523. As I stated I have owned 5 Toyotas and have never had this problem. I believe thepart to be defective and it should be investigated by your organization. Toyota should be made to replace defective air bag system parts up to 100k miles of a vehicle. Can you tell me if there has been many problems of this nature reported and if so do I have any recourse with Toyota. Thank you.

I was operating the vehicle on the highway at about 70 mph and the airbag light (airbag srs warning! according to the manual on the truck) came on. I immediately took it to the dealership because I was literally minutes away. The service technician knew exactly what repair needed to be made without even doing an inspection. I was informed that the "spiral cable" either shorted out or broke, and that my airbags would not function until the $400. 00 part was replaced plus the cost of labor because my truck is no longer under warranty. I don't feel that a component as vital to the driver and passenger's safety as the airbag is should be subject to costly repairs unless it's actually been deployed. The vehicle has never been in an accident. Nothing has been done to correct the problem as of yet, it only became an issue today.

Airbag indicator light will not go off regardless of "fixes" on my 2005 Toyota Tacoma.

We purchased a 2006 Tacoma on Dec. 23, 2008 from competition Toyota in new york. We drove the truck back to wisconsin that day. Two days after purchase date (approx. 1500 miles later), the airbag light came on. Having a busy schedule, and not using the truck much, we brought the truck into marquart Toyota in eau claire, WI on March 18, 2009. They assured me that it would be covered under warranty as long as it were an airbag problem. Turns out they charged us with $94. 95 for the problem to be diagnosed. A spiral coil that allows the steering wheel to turn while still keeping the airbag connected broke. They quoted me $483. 19 for the repair of this coil. Due to this broken coil, none of the airbags in the truck work. I called Toyota customer service to resolve this issue. After two weeks of deliberating, Toyota told me that this would not be covered under warranty. I reminded the representative whom I was speaking with that all safety related defects are to be covered in entirety by the manufacturer. None of the airbags in this truck work because of this coil, sounds like a safety defect to me.
