My airbag light came on last week and I found a recall for this issue online. When I brought my Tacoma to the dealership the technician told me the recall for the airbag light due to a spiral cable in the steering wheel was not covered for my Tacoma model. The dealership said the current recall was for a certain spiral cable not in my model Tacoma and that it should not be the issue. The next day the dealership called and said further diagnostic revealed it is the spiral cable and they are charging me $600. 00 to repair a safety issue. The dealership said this was a safety concern and that the airbag would not have deployed if I were to have been in an accident.

Driving south on macintosh rd. Tried to avoid hitting a car that made an illegal u-turn in front of me. I ran into the wall hard enough to knock the wall (cement) down. The air bag did not deploy. I received a concussion, and am still having problems with side effects a year later. Accident happened may 12, 2014.

While stopped in traffic, I was rear-ended by a vehicle. I hit the vehicle in front of me and that vehicle hit the one in front of it. The airbags did not deploy. My passenger's head hit the windshield even though she was wearing a seatbelt (the interior design required me to have the seat positioned quite close to the windshield).
Air bags did not deploy in frontal crash.

Without any warning or other indication, as I was driving, the red seat belt light came on and would not go off even after all passengers were wearing seat belts. I took it to a shop where they were unable to pull up a code for the light and stated they could not find a reason for the light to remain on. I contacted the dealership where I purchased the vehicle and they were unable to assist or find a reason stating that it was my problem and I would need to pay for any repairs to the component. Recently, during a u joint repair, the shop I take my vehicle's to warned me that the airbag would not deploy if I were to be involved in an accident. They stated that the red indicator light is showing me that there is not an active airbag system. I'd like to know if there is a pattern with this particular make or model as there seems to be quite a few issues with Toyota truck models at the moment. My daughter also drives a 2006 Tacoma and was reimbursed for her spiral cable repair expenditure.
Like many other Toyota Tacoma owners, my airbag dashboard light intermittently illuminated last year. After researching it, Toyota had issued a press release acknowledging a problem with the "spiral cable" and indicated they were gathering the parts and would send letters to owners. I never received a letter and after inquiring, my VIN was excluded from the recall campaign. After researching a bit more, it appears many Tacoma owners have the same issue and were excluded from the recall campaign. The airbag dashboard light now illuminates continuously. The dealership said it would be $106 to diagnose the problem (we all know it's a spiral cable issue) and from all accounts, the spiral cable replacement cost is north of $500 (even though Toyota's press release indicated it is a 30 minute fix). By the way, the dealership told me the airbag would not deploy in the event of a frontal crash as long as the airbag dashboard light is illuminated. The cost of repair is out of range for most and it was obvious the dealership had little concern for the safety of the occupants. This is a serious safety issue and the NHTSA is failing to analyze the data and make a compelling case to Toyota to expand the affected range of vins included in the recall campaign. It is yet another black eye for Toyota for demonstrating a lack of concern for a serious safety issue that could end up seriously injuring or killing a vehicle occupant, unnecessarily. Given the recent publicity of the fine levied against Toyota and the grilling gm is now taking, you would expect the automakers to step up their game. My observation is that they simply don't care. If NHTSA is not forcing their hands on safety issues, it's obvious car manufacturers no longer have incentive to do the right thing. Nhtsa, we're counting on you to analyze this data for safety sake.

The car in front of me stopped on the freeway and I was not able to stop in time. My front right hit his rear left, and my car spun 180 degrees into the lane next to the one I had been in and I was facing the oncoming traffic. My air bags did not deploy.

On 5/7/13 my Toyota Tacoma airbag did not deploy, was injured, and was not responsible for accident. Uninsured driver eby lucas, 2008 Toyota scion, was cause of accident, and scion's airbag worked. 2008 Toyota scion was received by mf auto on 4/4/13, purchased by yuka okuna, insured by geico on April 9, 2013 & reinsured on April 10, 2013 w/all state insurance (policy 4/10 to 10/10?), and police report stated amanda longley owned car & insured by safe auto. Yet insurance companies claim it is 'phantom or ghost driver' and not insured at all- not lawful in state of indiana as proof of insurance is required? it appears bmv records maybe altered after police report- police verified information at scene of accident? additionally, noticed police report stated "safety equipment effective" was noted "yes" for scion & Tacoma but my Toyota Tacoma airbag did not work properly- perceived unsafe product. Lastly, Tacoma Toyota was in a separate accident in 2004, not my fault (rear ended at around 35-40 mph), and airbag did not deploy- caused alot of damages and injury. Toyota failed to provide a safe product and is a cause of loss in many ways- too many losses to detail. Toyota was informed in writing but failed to address product safety concerns adequately and appeared more concerned about brand reputation than safety of people? (see phi matrix for some reasons- linked to stock prices/brand/ design /beauty analytics).

I ran into the back of a truck who was completely stopped, and I was moving at approximately 35-40mph on impact. The impact was perfectly square into the front of my truck. The airbags did not deploy. I was wearing my seat belt, however I was still pushed into the steering wheel quite hard. Fortunately I sustained no major injurious, and only suffered minor aches and pains.

My truck was traveling in middle lane of interstate when traffic on the right was slowing down to exit and another truck in the lane next to me on the right did not slow down and swerved into the middle lane failing to yield causing my truck to strike his truck causing an accident and totaling my truck. During this accident that crushed the front passenger side of the vehicle the air bags did not deploy.
The contact owns a 2012 Toyota Tacoma. The contact stated that while driving 40 mph, he crashed into a tree and the air bags failed to deploy. The contact stated that the vehicle was destroyed but there were no injuries. The vehicle was towed to a body shop. The cause of the failure was unknown. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 20,000.
Just started my truck up to go to work as usual and after about 1/2 a mile the airbag light came on. My truck has never been in an accident and the airbags have never been deployed before so I wanted to get it checked out when I got to work. As an ase certified technician I hooked up my scan tool and pulled code b1801-open in d squib circuit. So I examined it more and pulled up airbag operation data passenger buckle sw (seatbelt) unplugged=unset plugged in=set d seat pos with seatbelt unbuckled=bkwrd buckled=frwrd driver buckle sw unplugged=unset and plugged in=unset. I followed the Toyota motor sales USA inc trouble tree for this dtc and came to the conclusion that the spiral cable needs replaced. Went online and googled the dtc and have found several complaints and questions about this dtc. Several failures of the spiral cable. This seems like it is a manufacturing defect that has been designed to fail. I feel Toyota needs to step up and correct the defective parts.
Tl-the contact owns a 2005 Toyota Tacoma. The contact stated that while driving at 30 mph, another vehicle attempted to turn and the contact and crashed into the rear of the vehicle. The air bags failed to deploy. The abs warning light illuminated. The contact did not sustain any injuries that required medical attention. A police report was filed. The vehicle was driven from the crash scene and was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 150,000. Oo.
The contact owns a 2011 Toyota Tacoma. The contact stated that while driving 60 mph, the contact crashed into a deer. The driver's side air bag did not deploy. The vehicle was drivable after the crash however, the contact sustained a contusion to left elbow and a broken left wrist. There were no passengers in vehicle. The vehicle was not inspected for the cause of the failure. The manufacturer was made not aware of the issue. The current and failure mileage was 39,000.
Truck was in a parking slot when it suddenly accelerated and jumped the concrete barrier and hit the building (deli) broke the glass and damaged building. Airbag did not deploy. Damage to truck was $6533. 97. This is second time truck has accelerated unexpectedly. Toyota inspected it on 6/25/2012 and determined it was not a manufacture design or defect. I believe there is some kind of malfunction. They checked the operation of the accelerator pedal and they claim all throttle tests were safe as they were designed.
Air bag light came on. I went into Toyota escondido to have it checked. Cost 105. 00 to have them tell me it was the spiral cable and needed to be replaced. Stated that none of my airbags would work if that light was on and that my insurance would not cover me in an accident if the airbags did not deploy. Total cost for repair $654. 80. I have talked to many Tacoma owners about this problem and they have all experienced it. Some have it fail under warranty and some like me have to pay. This shouldn't be happening.
I was driving on the freeway and a car was in a accident, the vehicle was on its side. The owners of the car had got out to safety, but had to leave it to protect themselves. It was a black or very dark colored. With in this time of my passenger and myself in my 2004 Toyota truck had come upon it to fast to stop. It was a split decision and reflex to slam on my brakes. Other cars where around and I had no other choice but to hit head on. I was doing about 65 miles an hour and slamming on my brakes did little to avoid or lesson my reduction of speed. Thank god my passenger and I had on our safety belts. My truck comes with air bags and was listed as a good production of vehicles with safe and quality protection in an accident. I love my truck. I was not protected as led to believe. My air bags did not deploy. My truck is beyond questionable of my impact they should have deployed. I barely have a front portion of a bumper. Engine was smashed into my cab practically. Fenders caved in. Totaled. . . . I need help understanding this. I need to be insured that Toyota would not let this be overlooked. Im asking for this and maybe other safety issues to be handled and taken into to serious concern. It might be with this model truck only.
Involved in accident going 45 mph. Airbag did not deploy.
Air bag warning light stays on, code indicates defective spiral cable. Seems to be a common defect in newer Tacomas and is a serious safety issue since the air bag will not deploy in an accident. Replacing these is apparently a profit maker for Toyota, isn't it about time they were made to pay for this defect themselves, via a safety recall? or do people have to die first?.
Air bag warning light on and was quoted a price of $500 to repair. If not fixed, air bags will not deploy! something call "cock spring" under the steering wheel has malfunctioned.
The air bag light came on while driving. My passenger looked it up in the manual and it stated that the vehicle was to be returned to the dealership as soon as possible for maintenance. The problem turned out to be the spiral cable for the air bag had broken. This is a huge safety issue, as the air bag will not deploy when this cable breaks. Fortunately for me, this happened prior to the expiration of the warranty for passenger restraints, as I see this is a pretty expensive repair. I have looked at this site as well as others and see this is a common problem, and have to wonder why there has not been a recall on this part. Why aren't safety features always covered in all cars, as long as they are on the road?.
No issues have occurred with my truck until now. Just recently the air bag light on my 2007 Toyota Tacoma sr5 4x4 came on for a few seconds when turning the truck on, it stayed on for a few moments, longer than usual then turned off. While driving the light came back on and would not go off. Took to dealership; they say this is a spiral cable issue - cost to fix is $400. 00. Truck has approximately 76000 miles on it. Doing more research on Toyota Tacoma discussion forums online there are a few 100 other people out there that have this exact same issue. This is definitely a recall and a safety issue, the dealership let me know when I took my truck in that the airbag will not deploy without fixing this issue. My truck is practically still new, I have never had an issue like this before with any of my other vehicles. I will be sending a letter to Toyota about this issue as well.
My driver side air bag light has been on for some time. There was a recall for a harness in the steering column but that did not repair it. Then they tested the one thing and another and say it is a common issue where in the fender it can rub and cause the air bag to not deploy. I have seen a recent recall on various models where they call this a safety concern and can only wonder if it is also the case on the Toyota Tacoma prerunner I drive.
The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Tacoma. The contact noticed that the air bag light was illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostics. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact believed the failure to be a manufacturing defect because the air bags had never deployed. The approximate failure mileage was 110,000.

The air bag light on my 2007 Toyota Tacoma prerunner double cab 4x2 came on and will not go off. The Toyota dealership planned to charge me $115 to diagnose the problem. They did not recognize the code and charged me $59. 50 stating that they would call back after speaking with technical support. Later they said the problem is the spiral cable and quoted me $562. 44 to replace it. The problem occurred in July 2011 at 59,000 miles. I plan to fix it soon for 2 reasons: my life is worth more than $562 and I believe in virginia the light needs to be off to pass the yearly state inspection. This is definitely a recall and a safety issue, the dealership let me know when I took my truck in that the airbag will not deploy without fixing this issue. My truck is practically still new, I have never had an issue like this before with any of my other vehicles.
The contact owns a 2003 Toyota Tacoma. The contact was driving out in an intersection when a vehicle crashed into him at 45 mph. The air bag did not deploy. The vehicle was towed to the contacts home and had not been inspected. The contact was concerned that the air bags did not deploy. A police report was filed. The VIN was not available. The failure and current mileage was 80,000.
Airbag light came on dash- took to dealer because manual said to-$450 later I am told is a spiral cable in the steer column needed to be replaced-was told only option was to replace-otherwise, airbag would not deploy and light would stay on dash-warranty should cover this type of thing forever. No reason consumer should put out $450 for a safety malfunction.
