Have owned the vehicle since 32k miles, 2nd owner I think. Starting about 1 and 1/2 yr ago the electric power steering (eps) started turning off while driving under any condition. When this happens it is very hard to turn the car. Car must be stopped and engine turned off and on again to reset eps system. This is very dangerous and happens at random.

Power steering assist is lost and it requires greater driver effort at low vehicle speeds that increases the risk of a crash. This is the same part that was recalled in the 2008 Chevrolet cobalt under NHTSA campaign number: 10v073000 the same problem is happening to the Chevrolet Hhr it all over the internet.

While I was driving in rush hour traffic during a turn onto a 4 lane divided highway a power steering message came on and the alarm sounded and discovered my power steering was gone. I had to pull extremely hard to the left to complete the turn. I then pulled over to check it out and turned off the car and sat there for a minute and restarted the car and it was okay. This has happened over the last 6 days several times but always in the afternoon, not the morning. I went into the place I get my car worked on for routine service and they hooked to the computer and said it had something to do with a faulty electronic switch and would have to be taken to the dealer. This is an extreme safety issue.

Loss of steering assist occurs at any time while driving and once assist is lost, a message is displayed on the driver information center (dic) and a chime sounds. This is the same problem & part involved in the below recall of cobalts & in a canadian recall of Hhrs. It is almost impossible to park when it is not working. Resetting by turning ignition off, then starting engine again will last about 30 seconds. I have almost crashed as it fails while turning entering/exiting parking spaces or garage. The eps (electronic power steering) goes out in my 2009 Chevrolet Hhr every single day, usually after about 5 minutes of driving. It hasn't caused me to have a major accident yet, but it caused me to scrape against a guard rail. The eps motor needs a recall immediately, as this is a well known issue with many Hhr owners!!!.

Electric power steering failure: this is a known issue by general motors and they have recalled Chevrolet cobalt and malibu, along with pontiac g5. The same part is used in the Chevrolet Hhr, which shares the same platform and many common parts with the cobalt and g5. I have had several instances of power steering failure that nearly resulted in accidents. I feel endangered and general motors does not care. They need to recall this. I have searched and found many many incidents of this occurring on the web. They know about this and refuse to acknowledge the problem.
