6 Steering Failed problem of the 2008 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 07/02/2013

As I was rolling up to a stop sign, the "power steering" alert appeared on my instrument panel. Having never experienced this warning before, I didn't know quite what it meant. As I made my left turn into the intersection, I found out! it took all my physical strength to stay within the pavement. Had my wife been driving, she would not have been able to maintain control. The steering failed twice more in the next two days. Fortunately, I avoided collisions both times and had repairs made at the dealership as soon as it opened for business after the 4th of July holiday. As there is no recall for this major safety hazard, the cost to me was $302. 66. I understand that this power steering motor is used on other gm cars that have been recalled. The Hhr should be included!.

7 Steering Failed problem of the 2007 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 05/29/2013

This car has experienced repeated sudden loss of power steering assist. It happens without warning and at all speeds from 25 to 65mph. Research shows that similar vehicles have been recalled for this exact problem but this particular car was not subject to that recall. (NHTSA # 10v073000). Furthermore, research indicates that this is a somewhat common problem for this make and model. Can you please tell me why this car is not subject to steering motor failure recall and please consider issuing a recall for this dangerous condition.

10 Steering Failed problem of the 2008 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 03/17/2013

My 2008 Chevrolet Hhr has developed an intermittent steering power assist failure. It first occurred a week ago upon start up. I drove it a few miles, afraid to turn it off for fear I wouldn't be able to drive it home upon restarting. Upon restarting in my driveway, the problem was gone. Now, a week later and with my daughter borrowing the car to drive to work in a snowstorm, the problem resurfaced as she was driving! I see there are numerous other complaints of this problem being reported daily. Why is this issue not being dealt with by the manufacturer? wtf! I cannot afford the expense at the moment, so the car is is currently being driven with this unsafe condition.

13 Steering Failed problem of the 2007 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 09/06/2012

The Hhr has electric power steering. The steering assist fails and makes the car almost impossible to steer. This is an interment problem. Shutting the car off and restarting will reset the fault and allow the steering to have power assist again. It seems gm has recalled all cars with that steering system except the Hhr. This is so dangerous because you never know when you are going to loose assist. I can happen in a turn and you will not be able to steer through the turn. Someone is going to die due to this issue it is very dangerous. Called my local gm dealer and was told I'm on the hook for the expense to repair this issue. Canada did recall this make and model for this issue. How is it a safety problem in canada but not in the us?.

17 Steering Failed problem of the 2007 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 09/13/2010

I have a 2007 Hhr. Since new it has had front end problems. The swaybar bushings are defective and cluck in cold weather. Replacing them does not fix the problem. (my dealer has replaced them at least once. ) the struts make noise too in cold weather, the intermediate shaft has to be replaced every 10000 miles because it starts binding and clunking. (replaced on my car 3 times now) however my biggest (safety) concern is the electric power steering. All other gm cars with the same system have been recalled and alot of Hhr steering systems are failing. Mine has not yet failed, but is does have a loud rattle (my research tells me that it is the gear on the motor) that my dealer "cannot duplicate" I have only 31000 miles on it now and worry about the power assist failing at the worst possible moment when my wife is driving with our kids. I understand that I won't lose all steering, just power assist, however if you are not expecting a sudden increase in steering resistance, the wheel could jerk out of your hand and you could easily take out someone on a sidewalk. Gm, please just recall the Hhr too and replace my steering column before someone gets killed.

A police report was filed. The contact has pictures of the vehicle. The VIN was unknown. The failure and current mileages were 24,000.
