1 Steering problem of the 2007 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 08/04/2025

Power steering motor went out. Went to the dealer to get special coverage 14119 ( I was aware of the issue ). Dealership refused to do work for free as stated in service bulletin. Called gm corporate and they also said work would would not be done for free. 14119 specifically stated that power steering motor would be changed and I quote " at no cost to the customer " unquote. They want $175 just to look at my vehicle. When does the " at no cost to the customer " come in, apparently we seem to have forgotten that. I would like some legal clarification to this from the NHTSA.

5 Steering problem of the 2010 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 09/12/2024

Although this vehicle is a 2010 Hhr, it has less than 23000 miles on it, has been garaged kept and maintained impeccably. The warning light blinks at random and then the power steering fails. It does not matter the speed of the vehicle and happens at random. Once turned off and restarted, the power steering works for approx 5 minutes and then fails again. There was a recall on 2009-2010 Hhrs for sudden loss of power steering issued in 3/2014, recall # 14v153000. This recall is not VIN# specific. However, when I contact the dealer for repair of this vehicle, I am told that the recall does not pertain to my VIN#, so its not covered. Nhtsa has more than 135 complaints about Hhrs since 10/2019 with more than half of them being steering issues. This clearly is a wider recall issue than originally thought. My vehicle is inoperable due to this safety issue. I filed a complaint with gm. They told me it was not their issue and I could pay to have it diagnosed and fixed at a dealership. This is a gm issue due to the amount of complaints about this exact problem from other owners. I am hoping gm is made aware of the widespread issues and does the right thing, issuing another recall for all 2009-2010 Hhrs regardless of VIN#.

16 Steering problem of the 2010 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 02/28/2023

The power steering failed, it is available for inspection. My safety and the safety of my two very young children were put at risk. Suddenly as I crossed the rail road tracks and attempted to turn right onto another street, the power steering went out of my vehicle. I narrowly avoided a collision with another vehicle stopped at the stop sign on the street I signaled to turn down. It hasn't been inspected by anyone yet. The power steering light came on right as it failed and I had no assisted power steering, manual only.

17 Steering problem of the 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 02/10/2023

The (eps) system in my 2006 chevy Hhr has experienced multiple malfunctions. The power steering suddenly cuts out without warning while driving at both low and high speeds, making it extremely difficult to steer, especially when attempting to turn or change lanes. This failure happens intermittently, and the eps motor is suspected to be the root cause. I have replaced fuses and relays, but the issue persists. This system is available for inspection upon request. This malfunction poses a severe risk to my safety and the safety of others. When the power steering fails, it becomes nearly impossible to turn the vehicle, which is especially hazardous during routine maneuvers such as lane changes or turns at intersections. The sudden loss of steering capability, especially at higher speeds, has left me vulnerable to potential collisions. Given the unpredictability of the issue, it could easily lead to a fatal accident if it occurs while navigating tight curves or avoiding road hazards. The problem has been confirmed by a certified mechanic, who validated that the power steering system is malfunctioning and recognized the danger it poses. The mechanic advised that this issue is prevalent in vehicles of this make and model & suggested filing a formal complaint to prompt further investigation by the manufacturer. To date, the veh has been thoroughly examined by an independent service center. They confirmed the malfunction of the eps system but were unable to fully resolve the issue through standard repairs like fuse or relay replacements. A "power steering" message illuminates on the dashboard. A few seconds later, the power steering system fails completely, leaving the vehicle almost impossible to control. These warnings have been intermittent, but their frequency has increased over time. The first occurrence was about a year ago, given the ongoing danger and prevalence of this issue among other 2006 chevy Hhr owners, I am requesting that gm initiate a formal recall.

18 Steering problem of the 2010 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 01/19/2023

My vehicle is the 2010 Hhr with electric assist steering. As with thousands of other Chevrolet Hhrs, my power steering abruptly stopped working. It is the eps system that is notorious for stopping abruptly and was and is the subject of a recall. However, gm refuses to repair mine like they have over a hundred thousand others with the same exact issue. They state that my vehicle, though exactly the same as thousands and thousands of others subject to the recall, is not included in the recall. . . How can this be? same exact issue. . .

The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 144,000.

21 Steering problem of the 2009 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 07/16/2022

When driving my 2009 Hhr the steering wheel shakes & vibrate at different intervals. Usually while slowing down to a stop & sometimes after during high speeds. Recently the noise it made was frightening. I had to use my emergency flashers & drive 50 mi per hr. On the freeway to arrive home safely. I took my car to mark Chevrolet & reported it on 08/02/2021. The car's mileage was 133344. The car is not an everyday vehicle that is driven often. I received the car on 08/17/2021 after the steering column & shaft were replaced along with resurfacing front brake rotors & rear brake job. On August 18, 2021 while driving on the freeway I went to blow my horn at a hazardous situation & discovered none of the steering wheels controls were working, horn & etc. I immediately returned my car to mark Chevrolet & reported their negligence & how they had risk my life to release the car without these functions working. They supposedly corrected the problem. On 07/05/2022 I had to return my car to mark Chevrolet because I was experiencing the identical problem with my steering wheel vibrating & make noise. My cars mileage was only 137641 less than a year later with just 4,297 miles driven. They claimed to have tightened something up in the column & returned my car on 07/12/2022. As I was driving on 07/16/2022 again the steering wheel started vibrating & making strange loud noises. I felt so unsafe & tried to make it home safely driving at a reduced speed. I plan to return the car this week back to mark Chevrolet and am asking for support to rectify this situation. I understand there was a recall on Chevrolet Hhr 2009 steering electric power assist system. I don't know if this issue is related to that. I never received communication from general motors stating that my vehicle was affected but apparently there is a problem. Please help!.

22 Steering problem of the 2008 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 07/15/2022

Needless to say, general motors has dealt with their share of recalls lately and while much of the gm recall news has been devoted to the ignition failures which have forced new ceo mary barra to stand before the us government, this new recall has nothing to do with the ignition cylinder failures. Although the ignition problems can cause a steering issue and some of the vehicles included in the ignition recall are also included in this new recall, this recall pertains specifically to the power steering system. It seems that in the 1. 3 million affected vehicles, one or more components of the electric power steering assist system could fail and when that happens, the car will not have the same level of power assist. The general motors statement announcing this recall is a bit on the vague side in terms of explaining exactly what is causing this loss of power assist, but the automaker has explained that it could be due to a problem with the power steering motor, the steering column assembly, the power steering control unit or a combination of the power steering column and the power steering control unit. Regardless of which of those components fail, it will become much more difficult to steer the car at low speeds, although when driving at higher speeds it may almost be unnoticeable. However, with the increased possibility of accidents, gm isn’t taking any chances so they have made the decision to add these 1. 3 million cars to their already lengthy list of recalled models. My 2008 Hhr is not listed in any recalls by it's VIN.

28 Steering problem of the 2008 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 01/05/2022

Steering gets very stiff and sometimes locks up when turning left or right in a curve at highway speeds. Had dealer check it and they said they replaced steering motor. Did not correct problem. Made an appointment to check again but was told I would incur charges. I have had it to several mechanic shops and we cannot find anything loose or failing. In a parked position it locks up completely until you start rolling. Afraid steering is going to lock up in a curve and cause harm to driver and passengers. It is available for inspection. It has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police or insurance. Has no warning lights or messages pertaining to problem. The problem first appeared approximately 6 months ago.

31 Steering problem of the 2007 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 11/17/2021

While driving the vehicle approximately 45mph, the power steering light came on the dash. While driving straight was not an issue, attempting to pull off the road was difficult. I checked owners manual which told me to take it to a dealer. This in itself was bothersome. I opened the hood and called my mechanic, who told me to check fuses. I replaced the fuse and the vehicle was fine for about 4 weeks, but once again driving 30-35 mph, the light came on the dashboard. I have saved both replaced fuses, I’m wondering after reading other reports whether the fuses are even blown? either way, this is not a safe situation to be driving any speed without power steering. Mine is a 2007 Chevrolet Hhr with approximately 163 k miles.

32 Steering problem of the 2010 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 09/15/2021

The contact stated that as she turned off and restarted the vehicle, the steering wheel regained power steering; however, the failure reoccurred while driving and making turns. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that no issues were found; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was towed to the same independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the power steering sensors had failed. The independent mechanic informed the contact that the failure was related to NHTSA campaign number: 14v153000. The power steering sensors and the battery were replaced. The vehicle was repaired. 33 Steering problem of the 2007 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 07/28/2021

The power steering intermittently (but quite regularly) goes out. The "power steering" warning also comes up on the display panel on the dash. If vehicle is restarted, the power steering seems to resolve itself again but only temporarily. This problem is becoming much more frequent. This is a safety issue because without the power steering in working order, the steering wheel becomes difficult to turn and this happens not only on the road but also on the highway as well when the vehicle is going 70 miles per hour. We have not had the vehicle serviced or looked at for this issue. It has been ongoing for several months but seems to be getting worse/more frequent.

34 Steering problem of the 2010 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 07/26/2021

While driving, my power steering fluid light indicator came on making it really hard to turn. After parking and turning the car on the steering wheel went back to normal. I had my mechanic to check my steering fluid and I did not need any added. This has happened 3 times while driving my car and I refuse to drive my car. Is there a recall on this the power steering?.

The contact owns a 2007 Chevrolet Hhr. The contact stated while reversing out of the driveway, the power steering warning light illuminated, and the vehicle lost power steering functionality.
