I was driving on the highway and the power steering light came on the instrument panel and my steering was hard to turn. It's very hard to steer like if I was driving an older model car with no power steering. Not very safe for me and the family.

Vehicle stopped while driving 35 mph. Restarted car after a few minutes and had to manually turn the car. The steering wheel was very hard to turn. Car set for a while and problem still persisted.
Power steering comes up in messsge center over 10 mph. Steering is very hard. When you turn the motor off and restart it resets. Over 10 mph power steering comes up again. Brought it to local dealership and diagnostic test done but test comes up with no problems. Gm recalled only the 2010 Hhr for this problem, not the other year models. I purchased my 2006 Hhr new in December 2005.

Thursday October 8, 2015 my wife got ready to go to work got in the car and backed up from the porch and then she noticed that the steering was real hard to turn. So she drove the car back into the porch and noticed that there was a warning on the dash that said power steering. She honked the car for me to go outside, she told me what was going on with the car and I too noticed it said power steering. I glad this happened on my porch because I had just arrived from phoenix, az on October 7 at 8pm, 2015. We could have been killed on the highway. Sincerely, [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

As exiting the expressway lost the steering power it was very hard to turn since I wasnt expecting it I ended at the shoulder and a flat tire. The car behind me realized I had car problems and was able to react to avoid a car accident. I heard of a recall and contacted gm at 1-800-222-1020. I was told they were aware of this situation but only doing a recall of 2009 and foward not 2008. I am also waiting for th edealership to contact me regarding the recall for the ignition.
Backing up out of drive way, steering was hard to move steering wheel. Took car to dealer which in addition I have the recall for egnetion recall the dealer states they have recalls for the steering but my VIN number is not a recall at this time. So why am I having the same problems as other recalls and I am not able to get the repairs under the gm company dealer states I need a power steering which is electrical and a steering colume.
The contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Hhr. The contact stated that the instrument panel shorted intermittently and caused electrical failures within the vehicle. The contact mentioned that the steering wheel was extremely tight and intermittently locked without warning. Upon using the cigarette lighter, smoke emitted inside the vehicle indicating that there was an electrical fire with the wires. The fire extinguished without having to contact the fire department. The vehicle was not inspected and diagnosed. The vehicle was included in NHTSA campaign numbers: 14v171000 (electrical system) and 14v047000 (air bags, electrical system) but was unable to determine when the recall repair would be performed. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 80,000.
The steering wheel is hard to move.
Power steering stops working. It began about a month ago, scared me a lot. At first it would happen after I drove it a bit but now it happens after about 30 seconds. I worry about needing to steer to avoid someone at slow speeds. I live in a crowded community and people, dogs, bikes, skateboarders and children are always just walking out onto the road. Also, I drive into farmer's markets and swap meets where people are all milling about and lots of maneuvering needs to be done to avoid accidents. No power steering makes this very hard to do. I can't afford to fix as I m barely making enough money to continue with my small business. Called Chevrolet and they tell me this is not a recall issue. They will charge me $125 just to look at it. And I have to give up using the car. This is crazy that no recall has been done considering all the complaints and facts of this issue.
While driving the power steering message comes on the dash and the steering is very hard, I turn off the car and back on,then it is fine, now it happens all the time, dealer sent me to chevy dealer which said no recall or extended warranty to cover repair, asked for corp number and got bogus number which is not corp number, I called back and asked again and that number there is never any answer. Have already done the email and spoke to rep with chevy before on this and she stated they had not heard of this issue before and would let me know but to bring to dealer and have fixed but to keep receipt for pay back if recall happens, is recalled in friends cobalt (same part #) but not in Hhr, I have now filed complaint with bbb. I am woman and carry my small grandkids in this car each day but I am getting stronger in my arms having to steer this way. Why is this Hhr not on the lemon list yet?.
Vehicle shut down due to power steering. Light came on, manual says to turn off engine and restart and it will clear light. However, when reaching speed of 40mph the power steering was again hard to turn. Again light came on. Vehicle is very hard to turn and get over to side of road especially if you are in the left hand lane and the power steering quits working. Upon the second time this happened, almost causing a wreck, it was extremely difficult to steer vehicle and get it off the roadway. Took vehicle to dealership and was told the vehicle needs power steering repair. Costing $365. 00. What a costly repair on a new vehicle. I have had older vehicles that never had the power steering needing repair. Also ask that transmission be checked again. Vehicle has already had rebuilt transmission installed by gm/ Chevrolet. Transmission is still slipping when trying to get on freeway. When slowing down from high speed, the transmission will sound like it is slipping into another gear.

The contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Hhr. The contact stated that the steering failed. The power steering light illuminated before the failure occurred and the steering wheel was hard to turn. The vehicle had been turned off for a moment to have the steering return to normal function. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 74,000 and the current mileage was 74,300.
Driving on freeway at 55 mph power steering indicator came on and steering was very hard to turn. Continued home very slow and steering the car was difficult and dangerous. Power steering worked upon restart. Now this happens every day. I will have to get it repaired and I am not happy after reading all of the similar problems with this steering unit. Why has the 2008 Hhr not been included the previous recalls?.
The power steering in my 2007 Hhr stops working at random times. The steering wheel is hard to turn and once I turn it off and back on it works again. The power steering light comes on at the same time it randomly happens!.
I was driving the car at approx. 15mph when the power steering light came on and steering was hard and non responsive. I could not steer the car. I stoped the car, in the middle of the lane, turned the ignition off and then on and restarted the car and the problem went away. This is the first instance of this problem with this car.
2007 chevy Hhr having problems with steering. Car is based on colbalt and was a replacement for few years. The steering is hard , jerky, not reliable. Can the recall be enlarged to cover Hhr s for same years? mileage is under 50,000 miles and not abused.
Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6) hi, [xxx] , I have a Hhr from Chevrolet, it has all the same power steering issues than cobalt and pontiac g5, that have been recalled for this issues, me and a thousands of owners of Hhrs have the same problems, power steering suddenly just went off and is very hard to steer, I have to turn off my car and then turn on to solve this problem, but suddenly after 8 to 15 minutes occurs again and it is dangerous, because the steering is very hard to steer, I think this is a safety issue, and I know the power steering is the same as a g5 and cobalt, why the Hhr was not included? can you please provide me some response?
