Vehicle intermittently loses power steering at various speeds, from low to highway speeds. Making the vehicle very hard to steer especially in turns and corners, and extremely dangerous. There is an existing recall (14v15300) for this exact issue, but when calling the gm dealership and the gm customer service line I was told that my vehicles VIN was not affected by the recall. How, if I am having the exact same problem, is it not considered a safety issue for me? but they were more than happy to schedule me an appointment to fix the known issue, at my expense of course. My vehicle only has 61,000 miles, so this is not a normal wear and tear issue. Especially when I find an article by rueters in which the vice president of gm's global vehicle safety says with these safety recalls and lifetime warranties, we are going after every car that might have this problem, and we are going to make it right," said jeff boyer, vice president of gm global vehicle safety. "we have recalled some of these vehicles before for the same issue and offered extended warranties on others, but we did not do enough. " very frustrating that a VIN is what determines mine and my family's safety! gm needs to stand behind all their vehicles with this problem, not just a select group. . .

2010 chevy Hhr lt with 76,500 miles. Sudden loss of power steering while driving. Upon doing research this is a well known problem by gm and they refuse to warranty the defect or perform a recall. Unsafe to drive when power steering suddenly quits on highway. Was driving approx. 60 miles per hour on the highway when light came on dash and lost power steering. Steering to a lot of effort.
I was sitting in traffic trying to merge and the power steering light flashed on the dash and I lost my power steering. I got home and shut the car off for a couple of hours and the steering was fine. I drove to the store and as I was pulling into a parking space it happened again, the light on the dash flashed and I lost my power steering. I am very concerned about this because my daughter also drives my vehicle and I do not want this to occur with her. I am questioning if this was part of the life time warranty recall as I have never received any notices.
I tried to used remote start from my fob. It worked the first time but nothing after that. . My 2006 Hhr lost power steering. The light came on and it took all I had to steer it. Everytime I cut it all off and crank it back up the light will go off and I can drive it for about a minute to 5 minutes usually in the light saying power steering will come on and the steering issue will occur again. I love my Hhr and this is my first Chevrolet product but I really think there should be a recall due to the fact that after much much research I have found that the Hhr as well as other Chevrolet vehicles have hundreds to thousands of people with the same exact complaint. The power steering light would come on and they would lose all power steering. This should not be a cost that us who have purchased and put our trust of safety into Chevrolet to have to bare. This can be extremely dangerous and can actually lead to vehicle fatalities due to the power steering going out. Chevrolet should be responsible for the repairs of the power steering due to it being a known fact based on very much research and complaints from so many owners. This fact shows and proves that it is the fault of the way the car was designed or built or faulty parts used by Chevrolet/gm. Please consider the danger that this fault can cause to owners and do a recall to have these issues repaired so that it doesn't end up causing more damage or taking a life because someone loses control of there Chevrolet due to faulty parts. Thank you, melissa from halifax virginia.

Was driving down the road and went to change lanes and lost power steering. After pulling over and turning the car off it worked again for like five minutes. I almost got hit on the side of the car because of this issue. I can see I am not the only one having it.
When I was driving, suddenly there is a warning sound and the dash shows the words power steering. I lose the power steering at that moment. I also found that if I stop the car and restart, I get the power steering back, however it might not last long.
The vehicle lost power steering assist while driving. There was a chime and an indicator light. Power assist returned after the car was turned off and restarted.
Car lost power steering & steering system light came on . Our mechanic advised go to Chevrolet, it's a recall but they refused to fix free & charged $268. 17 for fix . Claimed it was turbo but what's the difference? can I get reimbursed? web site says this year was recalled.
I was driving and my vehicle lost power steering, this is the second time in a year this has happened. The dealership replaced the motor the first time and now they are refusing to replace the steering column when the recall letter clearly states if all components need to be replaced including the steering column than they shall.
We keep hearing a ding, ding, ding, and the instrument cluster reads out power steering as we lose our power steering and it becomes very difficult to turn the wheels. This keeps happening every so many days and I have changed the 60 amp fuse. But it seems that if I pull over and shut off the car and restart it the power steering works once again. It is very frustrating and dangerous in traffic. I called our mechanic and he said he will not work on electronic steering systems. That doesn't give me much comfort as it appears I would have to go to the dealer and guess it might be a big deal and very expensive. But other than that, we have been very happy with our car these last 10 years.
While driving this vehicle, the power steering light flashes on dash board and I lose all the function of the power steering. It has now happened 4 separate times in two weeks, the last when I was turning a corner and nearly hit a car on the side of the road because I could not steer the vehicle. I have a safety recall letter from general motors stating that I had to pay out of pocket to fix and then they would determine if it fell under there recall. When the letter states to bring it to the dealership should the power steering light ever comes on the dash panel, which it has done know 4 times when the power steering failed. I could been killed if I had been going faster or killed some one. This is an issue with the gm faulty mechanics. First it was the ignition having to give my vehicle up for nearly 6 weeks to have it fixed. This is a serious issue that needs to be addressed by general motors and paid for by general motors, not the consumer. What is it going to take, another death because of the mistakes. Even after they notified me that is a safety issue via letter, but I first pay out of pocket and then determine if they will reimburse me for it. The first time I was in downtown la going to work and once again when I turned left while driving, the second on the 405 in rush hour traffic, just as I was accelerating and changing lanes, the light flashed on the dash board (power steering) and I lost all power steering capability. The third was the week of February 15, 2016. Turning left again and the fourth time just yesterday again when I turned left.
Car will lose power steering suddenly with a message displayed on the information center "power steering". Does not matter speed or length of time car has been driven. At this point, the power steering returns to normal when you turn the car off and then restart the car. Recall from gm has only 2009-2011 Hhr, but many other older Hhr 2006-2008 have exact same issues according to Hhr forums. Chevy even sent us a notice in January 2015 stating the potential of the power steering failure, but offered no date for a recall to fix. The Hhr has 75,000 miles and dealer was notified, but was rude about even looking the car up for recall information or helping us. This car has only seen a chevy dealership for any service related issues.
Gm says drivers will instantly know if the electric power steering system fails because a chime and dashboard message will appear. The car can be steered without power assist, but it can require a lot more muscle to turn the wheel, especially at low speeds. Because of the difficulty, the car could be more susceptible to a crash. Our vehicle was in motion on a city street when suddenly, we lost all power steering. Other makes and models with the same equipment has been recalled already. When shutting off the vehicle and restarting, the power steering is restored briefly and will fail again while driving.
Tl- the contact owns a 2010 Honda Hhr. The contact stated that the vehicle was driving down a highway approximately 70 mph the vehicle lost power steering. In addition when the brakes were applied the pedal pulsated. The electrical power steering warning indicator illuminated. The contact stated that they were able to operate the vehicle with power steering after switching to a different key. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or independent mechanic to be diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The contact was made aware of NHTSA campaign number 14v153000 (steering) however was informed that the vehicle's VIN was not included. The failure mileage was approximately 85,000. Kh.
I was driving last week and I suddenly lost all power steering. I had to pull over (as I was on a side street) and put on my 4 way flashers shut off my car and then start it. When I started my car I suddenly had my power steering back. Just a couple of days ago I was once again driving on a busy road near the intersection of the highway) and the same thing happened. I'm wondering if there is some time of defect with the power steering. Ever since I had the ignition switch recall fixed, I've been having problems.
Driving my 2007 Chevrolet Hhr on 8/16/2015 when the power steering message came on and I lost all power steering in the car. I pulled over and turn the car off. Then I started it again and had power steering back; but after few minutes driving, the light came on again.
While driving, the power steering message came on and I lost all power steering in the car. I pulled over and shut off the car. Then I started it again and had power steering again! this occurs sporadically now.
While traveling on the highway at 60 mph, my power steering light came on and I lost power steering this was on the August 14, 2015. Thought I had blown the fuse replaced it. Did not drive the vehicle again until Monday, August 17, 2015 and again while travelling on the highway at 60 mph the power steering light came on and I lost power steering. Made it home parked the car, Tuesday morning August 17, 2015 turned the car on and the power steering was fine.
I was on the freeway going 65 mph & all of a sudden the power steering light went on &lost power steering immediately! this could have been a very bad accident & was scary. It will cost me $500 or more to get it fixed. Also, at approx. 48,000 miles the back rear door latch broke & would not open, it cost me $125 to replace it as there was no other way to fix this. Beware of your power steering.
Car speeded up and down ,car started to spin in circle, lost power steering, lost control of car,car flipped and rolled over 3 times down a 30 yd. Cliff . No head air bags worked at all ,only the steering wheel air bag worked. Took over 2 hrs. To be found by police. Had to use cell phone signal to be found.
Power steering light came on and I lost power steering.
The first time this happen I was on the interstate with my wife and kid in the car. The road curved to the right and as I was going around it, I lost power steering. Luckily I was able to use force and maintain control around the corner. If my wife was driving she might not have been able to because it took everything I had to turn the wheel and get around the corner. Since then it has happened almost everyday, sometimes a few times a day. When this happens I get a dashboard message that says "power steering". My wife will not drive the car unless its just a quick trip to the store, and we refuse to put our son in that car. This is a very dangerous problem and I don't know how this has not been recalled yet.
My son is just learning how to drive and we were in a parking lot practicing. We heard a ding and then there was an error message saying service power steering. We had lost power steering. We shut the car off and back on and it was ok for just two more turns then gave us an error message again. I know gm issued a recall n140115 for some years and models and then a service bulletin number 14119 which states my year. When I called chevy to get clarification they said my VIN number did not qualify for this. If all of these other years are having the same issue why do they not qualify??? the service bulletin just states non turbo engine which I do not have. Below paragraph is form gm's web site. So why do some of us have to pay for this problem and others do not. In addition, 309,160 non-turbocharged Chevrolet Hhrs from the 2006-2008 model years (and several hundred 2009 models) and 96,324 Saturn ions from the 2003 model year that are not subject to these recalls will be given lifetime warranties for replacement of the electronic power steering motor. Gm bulletin 14119 covers the following cars where gm dealers will replace the power steering motor for the life of the vehicle. 2006-2008 and early production of 2009 Chevrolet Hhr (non-turbo) 2003 Saturn ion.
As I was driving down the road, my chevy Hhr suddenly lost its power steering. There was a message on the dashboard that read, "power steering," but otherwise there was no warning. I managed to get home without an incident, but this is a potentially dangerous problem. The power steering was fully functional when I tested it later that same day. I read in the USA today that gm had issued a recall for power steering failure in several of its vehicles including the Hhr, but my local Chevrolet dealership told me that my vehicle was not under recall and that I would have to pay for any repair work. It is too dangerous to drive without getting it fixed, but I think that gm needs to stand by its product.
Sudden lose of power steering with power steering light coming on and engine stopping. Luckily we were exiting a shopping area and was on a downhill grade and was able to coast to the side without incident (except the irritated traffic behind me). We were able to restart the car with no difficulty but the power steering light immediately came on and indeed there was no power steering. Went to a local auto parts place who said the fuse looked good, but we changed it anyway, hoping this would fix the problem, but no such luck. I live in the city and work in a metropolitan area, this is my only mode of transportation and at this point my biceps and shoulders are getting pretty sore. Very difficult to pull in and out of my driveway. Looking back, I see how this could have been disasterous. What if my 16 year old had been behind the wheel? hope it doesn't take long to get repaired.
As I was heading out to work my car dinged power steering on the dic and became very hard to control and the panel shut down. The past week the car will surge in and out, as if it's racing. The car has lost all power steering to the vehicle and is in need of replacement, this is just two weeks after it came out of the dealership for the recall fix for the ignition, I find it very odd I've had no power steering issues until the ignition was replaced. The dealership is aware. I also called gm who is aware and cannot do anything.
The contact owns a 2007 Chevrolet Hhr. The contact stated that while driving approximately 60 mph, the vehicle lost power steering and the power steering light illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 69,200.
Vehicle steering wheel became extremely difficult to turn--similar to a vehicle having lost the power steering function. No vehicle warning--feeling, vibration, or sound--was apparent prior to the failure. The Chevrolet Hhr, as well as other Chevrolet models, have been issued a power steering recall; however, the 2008 Hhr model year is not yet included. Calling the phone number from the gm website, the customer service representative could not confirm gm would be issuing a recall for the 2008 model.
On 07/14/2014 we lost power steering assist while rounding a curve. The following morning vehicle was taken to local Chevrolet dealership where diagnostic scan revealed power steering motor had failed & required replacement. Upon completion of repairs, we requested a goodwill policy settlement for the $322. 46 cost of repairs based on a 03/2014 gm newsletter article acknowledging failure and subsequent recalls on "some 2006-2010 Hhrs". The request was immediately and unilaterally denied by the Chevrolet district service manager without reason. We then wrote to mr. Jeff boyer, vp of gm global vehicle safety, in September requesting claim be reconsidered & reimbursement granted. We were contacted shortly thereafter by a gentleman from mr. Boyer's office stating reimbursement would once again be denied but that recall may be expanded in "a couple of months" to include our vehicle & that we would then qualify for reimbursement of repairs. We feel a reasonable amount of time has passed to justify filing this complaint with NHTSA. Substantiating documentation available upon request. Refer original gm case file #711334870998.
Power steering alarm goes off periodically and I lose power steering of my vehicle.
As I was driving on the highway the power steering alarm came on and about a minute after that I lost power steering. My son was with me so he help me steer it off the road. I turned it off and then turned it back on and about 3 minutes the alarm came back on. My son was able to drive the car to the dealership. This could have caused an accident.
I was approaching a business driveway that required me to make a left hand turn, so I braked (at which time there occurred a heavy side-to-side shimmy of the steering wheel, a "clunk" or "pop" from the area of the engine compartment or front suspension, and a chime from the dash) and began the turn into a driveway across lanes of oncoming traffic. The steering became extremely difficult midway through the turn, which caused me to drive partially through a ditch rather than completing my turn safely and entering the driveway fully on the pavement. I then had to park, turn the key to the "off" position and restart in order to reactivate the power steering. We have been experiencing this randomly for several months and have even acquired some minor body and cosmetic damage due to having lost power steering in a curve. When I contacted the dealership, they told me it might be from a faulty ignition switch that is now on order and may take quite awhile to become available. Today, I ran an internet search and found hundreds of mentions of this same problem within my year model, including a number of recalls that seem to affect the electrical power steering of this model and others. However, when I again called the dealership to inquire, they informed me that my VIN is not included in any of the steering recalls, and that I would have to pay them or someone else to make the repairs and attempt to get reimbursed if it ever does become included. The advisor also instructed me to call 1-800-101-0220 to complain, which only gets me a recording stating that the call cannot be completed, which sounds as if it has been disconnected. This is a serious safety issue not only for the drivers and passengers of these cars, but also for other drivers and possibly pedestrians who might find themselves in harm's way when this completely random event occurs.
