36 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 06/18/2014

We were on vacation at ft. Myers, FL, on the highway, going 70 mph and the ding-ding-ding sound went off and we lost power steering. If I would have been driving I would have crashed as I have weak arms from a neck injury. My husband was able to steer it without the power steering as he is strong. The steering would come back on then go back off erratically. We got the car back home to mississippi and put it in a garage on Monday, 23 June 2014 at 9:30. I missed work to do that and am presently still waiting on turan foley to get the power steering unit to my mechanic who ordered it Tuesday 24 June 2014. Today is 27 June 2014. This was a very dangerous situation. We had been notified that our ignition switch must be replaced and have been waiting 3 months on the part. I called turan foley and spoke with the parts lady about the power steering to see if I could get a car in the waiting time. She said no as the 2006 power steering for Hhr's has not been recalled. I inquired about the ignition switch I've been waiting 3 months for and she looked in her records and said she'd notified us by letter and phone 3 June 2014 the part was in. She did not send us a letter or notify me or my husband by phone. There is no record whatsoever that we were notified. We would have fixed it before vacation as we've been very concerned about this. Gm has some very dangerous parts of the car malfunctioning-in my case my power steering and possible ignition switch defects. I will have to pay my mechanic $310. 00 for the power steering. I am very unhappy with the gm product, my Hhr 2006 model. Gm has done a great disservice to their loyal customers. I used to be one.

37 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2008 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 06/09/2014

At any given time I lose my power steering. If I turn the car off and restart it works for awhile but the problem returns. I did see where they issued a recall for 2009 and later but did not include 2008 however they did say that they would honor lifetime warranty on the power steering motor on my car but when I take the car to the dealer they say this VIN number is not under a recall when I tell them it is under a lifetime warranty they look at me like I have two heads. Can you send me anything that I can give to the dealer so they will fix this problem.

Failure Date: 05/08/2014

I had my my children up from school while driving I lost all power steering. I had heard I chime rite before and noticed it displayed power steering on the instrument panel. I did find out that by shutting the car off and restarting it temporarily fixed the problem for a block or so. The vehicle is going to be serviced this week. I don't think we should have to pay for this problem to be fixed when the 2009 and 2010 models are having the same issue and being recalled ours should be recalled also.

42 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2008 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 04/04/2014

The first incident occured as I was slowing to make a turn and a message appeared on the message center that said power steering. Over the course of the next 2 - 3 days I lost power steering in the car approximately 35 - 40 times. We then took the car to a chevy dealer to have the ignition switch work done. They had the car for 1 1/2 months. I didn't have any issues until about 2 weeks after I picked the car up and have continued to have problems with losing power steering as I'm driving down the road. From what I understand, my car seems to be doing the same thing that the 2009 & 2010 Hhr's that are being recalled are doing.

43 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 04/02/2014

I was driving my car and all of a sudden the dash board made a tone, it said "power steering" on the instrument panel and I lost all power steering. It was extremely difficult to turn the car and after getting it stopped, I turned the ignition off, sitting there for a few minutes I restarted the car and their was no issues until I backed out, then it did it again. I ended up sitting their for a while longer (aprox 15 minutes) and restarted the car again, backed out of the parking place and was able to drive off with no problem's. Since then I have not had another incident with the power steering. I notified Chevrolet the next day and they said my car wasn't in the recall so, they were not going to do anything to fix it.

45 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2007 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 03/14/2014

When driving down the road my chevy Hhr will lose all power steering making it unsafe to drive. The problem goes away after I turn off my Hhr and restart it. It is extremely dangerous for myself and the other motorist driving on the road. It started to happen about a week ago and goes out a couple times a day. There needs to be a safety recall on this problem before more people die.

48 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 02/28/2014

I was driving home from work and stopped at a drive thru coffee shop. After receiving my order and drove off, I lost my power steering. My power steering light came on and I continued driving home. Thankfully, I only live a couple of miles away, though driving home was difficult. While turning on one street, I almost hit a car, as it was very difficult making a turn. I took my car to the dealership and they have to replace the power steering motor which will cost me 312. 00 dollars. I am upset that the manufacturer will not admit to the faulty motor, as I have read many complaints dealing with the same issue. Please look into this, I am concerned that this could cause an accident if not addressed.

49 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 02/28/2014

Since February 2014, the vehicle loses power steering during every active operation. I have contacted Chevrolet regarding this problem and was informed that based on my VIN, the recall did not apply. I specifically in formed them that this wasn't just about the recall announcement, but that I was actively experiencing power steering failure during every operation, but I was emphatically informed by the recall representative that the recall did not apply to my car and that is was merely coincidental that my 2006 Hhr is having power steering failure and was not related in any way to the recall!.

50 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2008 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 01/10/2014

Lost power steering and simultaneously saw a "power steering" message displayed on the driver's information center. Had a very difficult time steering the car in heavy traffic. Was able to reset the condition by shutting off the car and restarting, but the problem keeps reoccurring with regularity.

51 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2008 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 12/03/2013

On December 3, 2013 while I was driving to work I lost power steering on my 2008 Hhr. I immediately pulled over. When I turn off the car and turn it back on, the power steering will work for a few minute before losing power again. I began to search the internet for a solution. I notice several blogs from Hhr owners having the same problem. I call Hhr customer service to see if there was a recall and I was told there was not. I have gotten an estimate on fixing the problem and was quoted approx. 850 dollars.

52 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2007 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 12/02/2013

Making a left or right turn, I lose power steering, if I turn the car off the power steering will come back for a while, then I lose the power steering again. It is hard for me to turn the wheel I have carpal tunnel, elbow and shoudler and neck and lower back pain already.

53 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2007 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 11/26/2013

As I was driving home on the highway, the power steering light went on and then I lost power steering. I pulled it over to the side of the road and turned the car off. After waiting a few minutes, I turned the car back on. It was fine - for a bit. During my 21 mile commute, this happened 4 times. Every time, I lost power steering, pulled the car to the side of the road, and turned it off. Each time I turned it on, it was fine for a bit. This is very unsafe due to the lack of steering - it felt like I was driving a tractor each time this happened and turning corners was very difficult. Once I got home, we checked the owner's manual and it stated that when this happens, the electronic power steering device is faulting. We checked on the internet to find out how to purchase that part and discovered that there are several reports claims that the 2007-2009 Hhr and cobalts have this same issue. So, we called and purchased a part from the Chevrolet dealership in elburn. I asked them about how to make a complaint and I was led to discuss this with gm and make a complaint. Then, I am making a complaint with your company as well.

54 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2010 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 10/17/2013

While driving the vehicle will lose power steering. Dash indicator says "power steering". I turn the car off and turn back on and it fixes the issue everytime.

55 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2007 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 09/19/2013

Driving on the highway and the vehicle chimes and the instrument panel reads "power steering", the vehicle loses power steering and the steering wheel gets very hard to turn. It is very unnerving when this happens. The problem is sporadic and it has been starting to happen more often. When it occurs I will pull off the side of the road and shut the car off and it will normally work fine for a day or two, but the past couple of days it goes right back out and it won't work. I really want to have this issue repaired but I just started a new job and I really can't afford it just yet, I think gm should seriously consider a recall because this could be a very dangerous problem for someone who is not strong enough to steer the vehicle when this occurs.

56 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 09/19/2013

Wife was driving the car, the power steering warning light came on and she lost power steering. She got home, called the dealer and asked about recalls and was informed the 2006 cobalt (mechanically and equipment wise the same car with a different skin) was recalled but not the Hhr. I took the car to firestone and the steering worked fine. They checked out the steering and could find nothing wrong but indicated the Hhr has been recalled for this in canada but not in the us and that the repair is quite expensive. Is the government protecting their investment in gm by not issuing a recall? please explain this situation or recall the twin of the cobalt.

57 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 09/16/2013

While driving and in traffic lost power steering. Had to pull over, shut off car and restart t. This has happened numerous times and is to the point we can not drive the car.

58 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2008 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 09/09/2013

While driving at speeds upwards of 45 mph, the power steering light came on and I lost power steering. I almost got into a crash and was unable to safely steer the vehicle. Once the vehicle was turned off the steering was returned. And then it would go out again utnil the vehicle was turned off again. Upon searching the internet I saw that 1. 3 million vehicles were recalled for the exact same issue but the chevy Hhr was not one of them. It seems to be a harzardous issue according to chevy's recall, and the have received multiple complaints from Hhr owners and haven't recalled this part on the Hhr.

59 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2007 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 09/01/2013

On multiple occasions I lost power steering lasting approximately 2-5 seconds. Occasionally the "power steering" light would register on the dashboard. I brought my vehicle to the dealership and they could not find any problem. Over the next 3 months I would lose power steering approximately one to two times a day. It would happen at speeds from 10-60 miles an hour, while turning right or left, and any change in the surface of the road. I brought my car to my local mechanic and they stated that there was voltage going in but not out. I had the power steering motor replaced. I have read multiple articles on this problem. I feel rather lucky since my power steering would return within 5 seconds. Many reports have people having to restart their vehicles to reset the system. I also feel very lucky that I was not involved in any accidents. This is a very dangerous situation to be in. From my understanding, the cobalt had a recall on their power steering motor and is the same motor in the Hhr. I hope that there is some consideration in recalling this motor in the Hhr.

60 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2007 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 08/22/2013

I bought my car a week ago. Drove it home with no incident. Then drove it was on the highway to take my elderly mother to an airport 40 miles away. After seeing her off, I went to get my new car washed. Then got back onto the I-5 and drove about 3 miles, when I heard a tone and the dash board under the speedometer lit up, stating I had lost power steering. I was in the middle lane of six lanes, going 60 miles an hours in a brand new to me car I was not used to driving, in congested commuter traffic. I am not strong. I was scared out of my mind. Luckily I was on a straight away. I put on my hazard lights and people eventually let me over. I took the next off ramp and managed my way home on frontage roads and side streets, which of course took forever. Arriving home I turned the ignition off and cried with relief and frustration. Then I turned the ignition back on to see what the message on the dash was again and it was gone. I'm terrified to drive this car again. And everything thing I've read online since, said that if the shop doesn't see the message or duplicate the problem, they can't fix it, equalling money wasted. This problem is not new, highly dangerous and recalled in at least one of Chevrolet's other cars and recalled on the Hhr in canada. Why not here??? aren't americans as valuable as canadians??? please make this a recall and contact me when you do. I have a car I can't drive without fear and can't sell in good conscience. I am older, in poor health and without much money, I feel that I have been cheated. No one should be allowed to sell unsafe cars any where!!! I also feel this problem is why Chevrolet is discontinuing the Hhr, and leaving us out in the cold with their mistake. Does someone have to die for a recall??? I feel it was close in my case!!! *I will begrudgingly be taking it to a dealer for repair. What else can I do?.

67 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 04/10/2013

The vehicle lost power steering control. A chime sounded and a message appeared on the instrument panel. The power steering cuts out regularly since, every time the vehicle is driven. I have contacted gm numerous times, they insist that my vehicle is not included in the recent power steering recalls even though it uses the same exact power steering motor as the vehicles that are included (my local Chevrolet dealer has verified this and has contacted gm on my behalf too). I am frustrated and angry that gm is still neglecting to address this safety issue.

68 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 04/05/2013

I was on the interstate travelling at approx 60 mph when I heard a ding-ding sound and I looked at my display panel below the speedometer and it said power steering and I realized that I had lost my power steering on my Hhr. . . Drove home thinking it was low on power steering fluid, I unloaded groceries and went up to my local advance auto. . Only to find the car had reset its power steering and all seemed fine. Purchased the ps fluid only to find it did not use ps fluid it is all electrical. It continued on and off intermittently until yesterday (April 7) when the ps alert came on and now stays on. . . I have no power steering which has caused me to just about hit parked cars. . . Turning a curve on my way to work this morning I just about lost control of the vehicle!! this is a very dangerous situation. Chevrolet seemingly knows about this issue on the Hhrs. . . A recall on the vehicles are needed immediately to correct this as the potential for a deadly crash is very high. I do not feel safe in my vechicle any more. . Why were the same parts recalled on other chevy models and not the Hhr?? I simply do not have the necessary funds available to me to fix this issue. . The responsibilty I think lies with the manufacturer as it is their part that is failing on these vehicles. .

69 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2006 Chevrolet HHR

I was driving on expressway in slow lane, power steering light came on on the dash and I instantly lost power steering. I stopped at next exit, turned off car called husband he said to take it home. I started car, it was fine, no warning on dash, drove fine. I drove a few hundred feet, lost power steering. This went on six times, with me stopping turning off car and restarting before I could get home. I'm a small women and that little car turned into a tank without power steering. I called my dealer he said no recall and it would cost $109. 00 to diagnose and $120. 00- $653. 00 just for parts not labor. I checked on line and there have been thousands of complaints about the same problem. The chevy cobalt and pontiac g5 have been recalled and they have the identical electric power steering assist motor. Why haven,t you recalled the Hhr? for the first time ever as driver have I felt unsafe in my vehicle. Please address this issue before this turns into unnecessary, preventable tragedies.
