My power steering unexpectedly has gone out. When it first happened I was on the freeway in the rain and it locked up. Thankfully there were no others cars near me or I would of had an accident. I called the dealership and they said there was a recall but too much time has passed! this makes no sense. If it's bad it's bad, what the heck! so now I have taken the fuse out and it at least keeps it from locking up it it is very difficult to steer and I fear not being able to respond quickly in an emergency. Then I was noticing that when I add gas it had trouble turning over. Only when I added gas. Gas mileage began getting worse and then I felt the motor having difficulty while again on the freeway. I could smell gas and pulled over. There was smoke under the hood and I could see gas puddling up under my car. Now I am scared of my car. I called GMC and they said they couldn't help me with either of these issues to contact my dealership. I havnt done this because I already know they are gonna say they can not help me. This is absurd. I have had this car a year and nothing but problems for me.

Power steering went out completely causing me to swerve on the highway to side of road. The steering locked up and it was raining and I would of crashed had anyone else been on the highway. I was going about 55 mph at the time. I then proceeded to carefully at about 30 mph force my car to drive another half mile to nearest exit ramp. The entire time I was driving in the middle of the lanes and a huge liability as far as safety is concerned. Thankfully I made it with no harm to myself vehicle or anyone else. I pulled over to side of road and slept in car till the rain stopped. Prior to this I backed into a fence when the steering failed backing into a carport resulting in body damage to front end under left headlight. Months before I had asked the chevy dealership to diagnose issue and they found nothing wrong as in the beginning the car would still steer at its own leisure. The light didn't come on when they looked at it. After the night in the rain I have taken the fuse outta the power steering part and just manually steer. This should be replaced as it is a common issue to all Hhr. Mine isn't covered as it is an ss but clearly it should be covered by a recall. Hopefully I don't die before this is taken care of.

My car's power steering has dangerously disappeared while I was driving on the highway. The power steering came on on the dashboard and I had to stir the car with so much force to get off the highway. I had my 10-year-old son with me on his way to school. No one knows why this happened and I can't drive it with a 10-year-old boy who I have to get to school and myself and my wife to work. Mechanic after mechanic no one can tell why the power steering wont work. Please help!.

While driving in town lost the power steering on a turn making it difficult to steer and control the car. Self explanatory for keeping control of the car. Not sure what the problem is for sure the motor or other components. There was a vehicle safety recall but I was not notified that my vehicle may have been included. Problem still exists. No inspections as no accident occurred. Got a chime when unit failure immediately when it got disabled. No warning or message before or prior to failure.

My power steering is going out randomly making it unsafe to drive, I see there's a recall for 2010 chevy Hhr power steering which is exactly what's happening with my vehicle. When I turn it off and turn it back on it will work for a minute then click and go back out, yet when my VIN was ran the recall doesn't show up for my car even though the recall states 2010 chevy Hhr. . Mine clearly has the same issue as the other recall yet you guys haven't put it on my VIN so it can be fixed properly.
While driving down the interstate the power steering light flashed and locked the power steering to the point I was unable to steer in any direction. It has done this on multiple occasions to the point it has almost caused several accidents. This is a serious issue!.

Power steering warning.
Power steering keeps going out while driving. It's been happening for over a year.
Recently, without warning, I loose the power steering and the sign "power steering " comes on. It becomes very difficult to make a turn. When I stop the car and restart it, the steering is back to normal but after a few seconds it goes out again. That has been happening for the last 1 or 2 weeks. I called the dealer yesterday and told them about it and asked if there was a recall, they said that my VIN number was not affected by it. I know from research that quite a few cars had the same problem and that there was a recall. How do they know that my VIN number is not affected by it. Can you please investigate it? thank you!.
Tl the contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Hhr. The contact stated that while driving approximately 65 mph, the vehicle loss power steering assist and became difficult to steer. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who replaced several fuses however, the failure persisted. Deery brothers inc located at 200 s. Gear Ave, west burlington, IA 52655, and the manufacturer were notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 138,000.
Our chevy Hhr 2010 has been dying and stalling out on us while we are driving it, the only time it had power going to it was when it was being jumped. Even then soon as the cables were unhooked it would jerk then die right away. It seemed as if most of the lights inside and outsided of the truck only would flash while jumping it, then nothing. It was also very difficult to turn the steering wheel, and everything basically seems like it's mailfunctioning. This has been on and off for a few weeks now but I dont know how to fix it, nor can I even start it at this point, but I definitely dont feel safe driving it the way it is right now being that it powers completely off whenever it wants to. It was in motion a few times on city streets, and in motion turning when it died for this last time. Its now parked on a street unable to drive it.
My power steering keeps going in and out and flashes a warning light that says power steering then the power steering turns off and it's hard to steer it happens just going around the corner as soon as I start turning my steering wheel it goes off if I turn my car off and turn it back on it comes right back off and I can drive but then it will come back on a little bit later while I'm turning or when I just start the car or if I try to back up randomly it will just come on until I turn the car off and then it will go back to regular but will always go back to power steering.
Power steering stops frequently making it very difficult to control car.
The vehicle has started losing power steering at low speeds intermittently. In researching the problem, a recall on the electronic power steering for this 2009 Hhr was found. In addition, I found that gm issued a bulletin (14119) under recall n140115, stating that for model year 2006-2008 and early production 2009 Hhrs, to provide eps motor replacement for the life of the vehicle. Since I have not had this vehicle since 2009, I contacted the dealership to look up the recall history and found the eps motor was replaced once already. However, this late 2008 production/mid-2009 delivery Hhr is losing power steering at low speeds again. While myself and teenage daughter have driven it on the road. The dealership could get no diagnostic code of this and has told me there is no open recall on this vehicle and we are responsible for paying for the motor replacement. I am very disturbed that this problem 1. Generates no code, 2. Is being unacknowledged by gm, and 3. Seems to be an on-going threat to safety for many Hhr drivers. Gm has made a mistake in not including my make/model (or so it seems) in the bulletin pertaining to replacing the eps motor for life and is failing to acknowledge that they may have additional vehicles on the road needing to be serviced, especially when the driver states there is a problem posing a serious safety concern. Note, the production of my Hhr being in 2008, delivered in 2009 and failure by gm to acknowledge under bulletin 14119.
With no advance warning while driving the power steering will stop operating and the car must be steered manually. I never know when this may happen and sometimes it will happen many times in one day and other times we may drive several days without any issues. This is an extremely dangerous situation when traveling on a 2-lane roadway for myself but even more so for my wife. There are known issues by both the NHTSA and general motors yet no help is available to correct the manufacturer defect.
Electric power steering first started to fail about 12/20/19. It would not allow assisted steering until the vehicle started moving. It worked like this for a few days and then started to fail at random while driving, the worst incident when starting to make a turn at a busy intersection. I barely avoided an accident because it tried to straighten my wheels while I was in the turn. Shortly after it failed completely. It now has no power assist. I would here a clicking from under the dash, and when that stopped, my steering returned. Now it clicks and there is no further assist. I saw where other gm cars with this system were covered under a recall, including newer models, but when I called them, they stated there were no open recalls on my vehicle. The car is unsafe to drive in this state and needs to be repaired.
The power steering went out as we were dealing with a starter issue. It indicated only once on the dash that there might be something wrong with the power steering. Now it's completely gone. The dash doesn't show any information that there could be an issue. It's very hard to take turns. Both wide or tight. It takes a lot of strength to get the steering wheel to move. If I drive it, moving from lane to lane is difficult. I now have it back in the shop for the mechanic to check it out and run a diagnostic test on the electrical system.
Driving and power steering randomly quits working been happening for 5 days.
Have owned 1- 2008 & 1-2009 Hhr ss with 2. 0l turbo charger and manual 5 speed trans, and right at 100,000 miles the front suspension makes a horrendous noise like the front suspension is going fall out from under it when hitting small bumps . Also if you move the steering wheel back and forth it will make a very similar noise. The 2008 got totaled from a lady pulling out in front of me had changed the sway bar end links prior to accident made no change. Meeting the same mileage on the 2009 and already making the same exact noise . Almost afraid to drive it on the freeway for fearing of loosing the steering and killing anyone. I have read up on this concern and have seen alot of people with same noise and have spent 1,000s of dollars and noise still there. You would think someone would have been able to correct the problem before there are deaths involved but even the dealership can't find the fix. Really feel like this should be investigated at once, can't believe that there hasn't been a recall done yet.
When driving the steering wheel will lock up and I can not turn. Power steering warning message appear in the dash panel. This occurs when driving on the highway or anywhere I'm driving.
While driving on a 2-lane highway the power steering assist quit working and the message "power steering" appeared in the driver information center screen. Later I discovered that shutting the car off and restarting it restored the power assist.
The power steering is suddenly inoperative. No power steering. It just came on the warning lights one time, power steering, and I can't find a fix. The vehicle was parked in my driveway when it happened.
While driving the power steering shut down and dangerously went into manual mode. Upon stopping and starting the p. S. Worked for 5 minutes then it went out again. Only 151k miles.
Intermittent loss of power steering. The last two days while driving home the power assist went out on the freeway driving home. Standard freeway speed. Hot day 95 to 100 degrees. The first day I replaced the fuse steering worked. Today it went out at the exact place roughly 20 minutes driving. Very frightening although I was on a straight stretch of the road. Today. The car sat for 30 minutes and to my surprise it started with up with power steering. I dont understand why my year was part of the recall in canada but not the us. Peoples life are at stake and the burden of this repair ir replacement should fall to the manufacture incident dates thus far 6/10/19 and 6/11/19.
Electric power steering quits working at times making steering difficult. When this happens a chime sounds and a message appears on the instrument panel. There have been recalls on other models and maybe even this model but for some reason it does not register for my VIN . I have not been involved in a accident.
I was heading out to my car and tried to remote start my car and it did t work and I tried it twice and then got in my car and notice my check engine light and power steering came on after I put the car in gear and began moving and I stopped and when I went to turn it was hard to turn and had to use to hands and I did research and this a know problem and the remotes and this power steering issue should be recalled or it may hurt or kill someone.
Power steering goes out. Warning light indicates power steering. Occurs while freeway or city driving and while stopped at a traffic light or stop sign. Occurs from 0 to 65 mph. To resolve issue you must turn off the engine wait a few seconds then turn it back on. Issue has been occurring for the last 3 to four months.
Electric steering keeps going out . Works 5 mins then turn the car off try again world 5 mins and goes out again. Snatched us off the road into a ditch. Can't turn steering wheel.
Power steering on my vehicle will stop working after 10 second of my moving my vehicle.
Electric power steering malfunctioning causing power steering to shut off while operating vehicle at highway speeds. Should be a recall for this. All models but Hhr were recalled for this issue.
I bought a 2006 chevy Hhr last February I qas driving it on the interstate and it suddenly starts beeping saying power steering it doesnt say there is a recall on this year but I feel they should be because it starts out doing it ever now again to everytime u drive it. It was very dangerous I got my replaced which was 200 dollars but im glad I dont have to. Go through that again.
Power steering goes out seconds after the wheels start rolling. It is extremely hard to maneuver after that. Turns r close to impossible unless you are going a decent speed. Putting the car in park or neutral and shutting it off then back on again will reset the steering and it buys you a few second of easy turning before u hear a click nose under the dash and assistance is gone. This is a hazard to the person driving and any vehicle or persons around while turning.
