It loses the power steering at times, after is turned on. This is something that happens often.
Power steering fails. Loss of power steering while driving. When I turn off the car and restart it power steering returns. Lost power steering six times in one week.
While stationary, steering wheel in vehicle twitches back and forth while making a mechanical grinding sound. While in motion, vehicle loses power steering resulting in difficult turning both to the right and left while at low and moderate speeds.
Vehicle looses steering at low speeds. Previously had a extended service campaign that they never had parts for. Expired now but a recall on other same make and model of the same year. This is a serious safety issue and needs reexamined. Called gm and they are not concerned about loss of steering. Was driving and had to make a turn at 5 mph lost power steering and signal chimed. Was unable to complete turn almost caused accident on city street.
The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu. While driving various speeds, the vehicle inadvertently veered to the left or right and the power steering warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle also lost all power steering ability. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer stated that VIN was not included in a power steering recall. The failure mileage was 191,000.
My wife was slowing down to enter a rest stop in her 2005 chevy Malibu maxx when there was a ding and power steering was displayed on the driver information center. At the same time, she noticed she had lost power steering. She was able to stop the vehicle safely and turned it off. A few minutes later, she restarted the car. There was no longer the power steering display and the power steering had returned. A recall notice was issued on April 21 for electric power steering assist for this generation of Malibu (gm recall no. N140116; NHTSA recall no. 14v153) but we still haven't gotten a letter. When I called the Chevrolet customer assistance center, I was told parts are still not available. Apparently there are three other gm electric power steering recalls, with parts available for those three others but not our car. So far the problem hasn't returned, but once it happens the first time doubt gets planted. Especially because this is at least the second time there has been such a recall. We got a recall notice in late 2007 for the power steering system as well, and I'm pretty sure there was another one before this year's recall.
While checking out my daughters 2005 Malibu classic for complaints about intermittent airbag light I happened to slightly tug on her keychain while driving about 50 mph on the highway. The engine shut off. I lost power steering. I lost power brakes. I could not restart the car while it was moving. Luckily I was able to pull it over to the side of the road. It would not restart until I put the shift lever into park. I investigated this on the internet and found other gm vehicles being recalled but not this one. I called gm's recall line. They said to contact my dealer. I asked the dealer to make some keys with a center hole rather than a slot (at my expense) to prevent the ignition switch from rotating to engine off when a keychain is attached. They said they could not do it without gm authorization. I am concerned about my family members using this vehicle. Luckily no one was hurt.
Was traveling app. 35 mi per hr and went to make a turn and lost the power steering and was almost hit by another car. I have lost the ability to steer properly several times over the last year the worst being when this happens and I am on the interstate. This recall happened in may of 2014 and now it is July and the dealer is saying they still don't have the parts to fix the problem. Are they waiting till our cars are to old for them to be fixed under the recall? I have not recieved any notice from general motors.
While driving 25 ? 45 and making a left turn or changing lanes to the left the steering wheel loses it power steering. This vehicle cannot be steered unless you are a power lifter at that point. This is my mom?s only vehicle and she is 77 and had carpal tunnel surgery on both her wrists, so I doubt she will be able to steer at all. So if gm says it?s not a safety issue, and the car can still be steered, they are wrong. There has been ?special coverage adjustments? for this issue on the 2006 models in united states and gm has actual recalls for 67,000 vehicles in canada for the same thing. (manufacture recall number 12221) her vehicle VIN number doesn't fit into the selected VIN numbers and she has the exact same issue. Someone needs to have gm open up this special coverage for this issue period, regardless of the year. People with same problem on VIN numbers that get the coverage get a free steering column install and she has to pay $600 - $800 for same services? all this because of a small part that is riveted to the steering column on the inside that goes out every 30k miles.
My 2005 Malibu maxx LS loses its power steering. It does not matter what the temperature, or what the weather is like, just out of the blue the bell goes off and power steering it runs across the dash. It will reset itself once the vehicle has been shutoff and restarted. It has happened on several occasions, however, it has become more frequent. This isn't very safe!!.
The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu maxx LS (na). While driving approximately 5 mph, the contact stated that the vehicle lost power steering. Neither the dealer nor manufacturer were notified. The vehicle was not repaired. The current mileage was approximately 149,000. The failure mileage was approximately 148,500.
The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu. While traveling at speeds of 30 mph, there was an unusual chime and within seconds, the vehicle lost power steering. The vehicle was not diagnosed and there were no prior warnings. The current and failure mileages were 60,000.
My 2005 chevy Malibu sometimes loses power steering. When I was driving, the "power steering" message suddenly appears with a sound and I have no power steering in my car. It was very hard for me to make turns because the wheel was stiff. I turned off my car, waited a moment, and then turned it back on. It was just a temporary fix. If I was driving on the high way and cannot control my car, it could be deadly. I searched online, and a lot of owners also have this problem.
My sister was using my 2005 Chevrolet Malibu and when exiting the nys thruway she heard a chime, a light went on and the vehicle lost the power steering. Her husband in the passenger seat had to assit with steering. It was too difficult for my sister to steer by herself. They parked the car and shut it off. After a short time the car was turned on and the steering was fine. This problem only occured once to date although I have had steering problems in this vehicle since 2007. While under warranty the steering was lubed. After the warranty expired I have had over $981. 00 in steering repairs at the dealer which included steering suspension shaft, steering ball joint and steering arm. The latest incident of the loss of power steering is a safety concern. Please investigate. I have read gm was recalling cobalts for this problem but no mention of the Malibu. The Malibu has the same problem.
We lose power steering with no warning on our 2005 chevy Malibu- once/week. We brought it into our local dealer and they told us it was not covered and would cost $1200 to repair. The dealer however showed us a service bulletin that showed that this is a recurring problem on Malibus.
The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu. While driving 20 mph the power steering warning light illuminated on the instrument control panel. And there was lose of power steering. She restarted the vehicle to resume normal vehicle operation. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection. The technician stated that the steering column assembly needed to be replaced. The current and failure mileages were 89,500.
Lost power steering without any notice or indicator error lights. Previously when turning would make some squealing noise like low on power steering fluid, but is electronic power assisted turning. Car is chevy Malibu classic 2005 with 76,000 miles on it. Safety issue as I could have been driving 55 - 65 mph on highway when the power steering quit!.
My wife almost had an accident when the power steering failed. She pulled out into an intersection and the power steering failed and then the car stalled in the intersection the car to a certified repair shop. He said there was a bulletin out by general motors dated November 8, 2007 that 2004-2005 Malibu's and 2005 pontiac g 6's are having problems with the power steering. General motors knew that you might have a lack of power steering, vibration, or a rattle or clunk noise from the left lower instrument panel. Gm should have recalled these cars to fix their problem. I was told that this problem was a safety issue and that general motors should be responsible. I took the car to a gm dealer and he agreed that gm should fix the car. I filed a complaint with gm and finally after calling for 2 weeks, they said they would do nothing. I am very upset with gm and just wonder how many people have wrecked Malibu's because of the failure of power steering. If you have one of these cars, I suggest you sell it or take it to the dealer for repair before you lose your power steering when pulling out into an intersection and the car dies in front of another vehicle. I will never buy another gm product and advise the same for anyone else.
