Power steering light continuously chimes on. There has never been loss of steering but light has been chiming on more and more frequently, almost daily. When taking it in, light didn't come on so they said there was nothing wrong. Becoming more frequent every day, doesn't matter what speed I am going, comes on on highway or driving through town.

Takata recall. Steering locked up while driving going around a corner and took a few minutes to get it to unlock. Happened to my wife with our son in the car. This happened before we got the recall. Got the recall fixed and now the power steering warning light is coming on. Headlight are constantly blowing bulbs. The headlight will go out so I will go to replace the build and then it comes back on. Front right turn signal goes out a lot and if I tap on it then it comes back on. The same with the rear tail light goes out often. This summer the traction control would ding and the button would not turn it on or off. When did this happen question doesn't make sense. It is a on going events.

August 1, 2013, was driving off the parking lot at work when power steering went out. It came back after three days but on August 23, 2013, it went out completely. Was driving down the highway, doing 65 mph and completely lost steering capacity. Power steering light came on and beeped twice. This was very scary until I remembered I would still have manual steering. Immediately got off at the nearest exit. Took to get repaired at dealership because of recall related to power steering. Part covered under the recall does not and did not fix power steering of vehicle. An additional $700 needed in order to fix the power steering module, which houses sensors. This module, I was told by the dealer, is what is needed in order to completely repair vehicle. Why can gm not repair the entire steering component when, apparently, the module is the most expensive and most common part on these vehicles that malfunctions (if the blogs are to be believed), not due to abuse/misuse by owners but due to manufacturing defect(s).

The steering wheel became very tight for about 3 mins. And the power steering light flashed on the radio panel. When the steering wheel loosing up it was too loose. The next day the check engine light came on and I went and had a mechanic check it out and he said that it was coming up as an electronic steering failure.
Turning left at about 5 mph, power steering went out and made it hard to turn the corner, almost caused an accident in the middle of an intersection. Power steering light came on radio display and buzzer went off. Pulled into gas station and restarted engine. Problem went away. Waiting for it to happen again. Judging by the same complaint from from others, this will by my last gm.
As other owners have experienced, the steering alarm light went off in my Malibu. I have seen that other Malibu in my cars VIN range experienced the same issue as issued by a gm warning. This seems to me to be an unsafe vehicle and gm should stand behind your vehicle as I could not allow my child to drive to CO with the possibility that the steering would go out. While I did not get to the point where we had steering failure, the motor was diagnosed with major issue as did the electronic control which appears to be the root cause of the issue. This car would have steering failure if we did not got to the dealership and replace the motor and steering column.

I am told the steering column may need to be replaced.

I own a 2005 Malibu. The electric power steering light comes on and power steering randomly quits working. Its happened three times at 107,000 miles. There is an extended warranty special coverage # 1-0183, may 2015 or 100,000 miles. I had the dealership diagnois the problem ,cost me $100. 00. To fix it is $700. 00 to $800. 00. The dealer will give me 10% off of parts. Gm will not assist with cost because it is not within coverage perimeters. This was a company car where I work. I bought it one year ago for my teenage daughter. I feel the steering just now became a problem at 107,000 miles because it was driven highway miles only. I am a single mother and cannot pay the expense to fix the steering problem. Due to safety I cannot put my daughter back into this car. Gm has been rude and will not even discuss assisting with the cost of their power steering issue even though they admit it is a 2005 Malibu defect. Can you give me any advice. ? this is a well documented common problem with this model and make of vehicle. Definitely a safety issue and gm responsibility.
