1 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2020

The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu maxx. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, a clunking sound was coming from the steering column while turning the steering wheel in either direction. The cause of the failure was not determined. The contact indicated that the steering column was previously replaced however, the failure persisted. The local dealer john elway Chevrolet located at 5200 s. Broadway, englewood, CO 80113 and the manufacturer were notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 45,000.

2 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2020

Steering wheel column makes clunking noise when turning. It has been repaired at least 3 times. The last 2 were 5/31/2013, which we paid for, & 10/1/2014, which was on a recall. Now it has been doing it again for several months.

3 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 05/14/2019

While pulling into a driveway, it appeared as though the power steering stopped working, ie. Very hard to steer. Then there was a very loud "bang", and the steering wheel just, freewheeled, with loud "clicks" as it turned. There was no steering in either direction. Luckily, I wasn't at highway speeds. It appears that the intermediate shaft on the steering column broke. This was a recall item from 2014. We bought the car Nov. 2018. The local dealer told me that the recall expired in 2017. A recall expired??? and a steering column broke??? this is a major safety issue and should be addressed my gm, without an expiration. Not to mention, are the replacement parts identical to the part they replace? or has the defect been re-engineered to not happen again. Reports I've now read concerning this issue, state that the same condition re-occurs in less than 20,000 miles. This should not be considered a "wear and tear" item. This is a gm engineering defect and must be addressed by gm.

4 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 02/04/2019

Turning left off the highway onto a road the steering froze. I had to stop and back up to release the steering. This has happened 2 or 3 times both right or left turn. The steering column is making a noise and I believe it is the intermediate shaft. Mayploe chev replaced the steering column.

5 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 12/19/2018

The power steering would stop working periodically, most often upon starting of the car but it failed while driving on the interstate one time. The mechanic read it as a c0545 code, steering wheel torque input sensor. The dealership stated the steering column needed to be replaced. This issue is well know, and it appears some vehicles with the same make and model and year were covered under a recall, but my particular one does not seem to be.

6 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 01/30/2018

I was driving and a warning signal sound came on and the "power steering" message appears on the screen then the power steering went out. I was on on on the highway so that was the scary part. I started to go home because I knew it was not safe. The car would shake and make noises while I was stopped at a stoplight and the steering wheel would jerk and move and continue to rattle. I was able to pull over and turned the car off. I started it back up and it was okay. I started to drive and again the signal sound and the power steering message came on and it went out while I was turning which was a scary moment because an accident would've happened had another car been in the way. It was very difficult to drive and I was worried about an accident happening. I was told to take it to the shop and did so. Was told it was probably a sensor. I looked up recalls and that was a recall on my car. I called the gm/chevy consumer line and they recommended it take it to my local chevy dealer and stated the recall had been fixed. Local chevy dealer calls to tell me that there is a "bulletin" and the steering column needs to be replaced at a cost of $1,100. The steering column is listed on the previous recall but they only replaced a sensor. I was told I had to pay to have it fixed. I find it very disturbing that millions of cars have this issue and nothing is being put out to fix the problem. It is dangerous.

7 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 09/16/2017

2005 Chevrolet Malibu. Consumer writes in regards to problem with steering column. Consumer states that their is a "clunking noise" coming from steering column.

8 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 01/03/2017

Power steering column and motor went out after having this recall corrected. It is now out again, just 2 weeks over a year after having it corrected and gm will not pay to fix it. This creates a huge safety issue in my opinion. Also, the brake lamps continue to malfunction which were also corrected by a recall issue but continue to go bad.

9 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 11/18/2015

Takata recall: steering. My car had the steering column replaced over a year. On 11/18/2015 I was driving on the fwy when my steering wheel got hard on the curve, was a very scary situacion. I took the car to the dealer and they said there's anything they can do about it, because the warranty was over, I cal gm and they said the part was replaced already replaced. On my opinion if they put a new part and last less then 2 years that means still defected, because it should last longer . Please let me know what should I do about this problem. I'm very scared to drive the car like that.

10 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 11/16/2015

Tl-the contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated that the steering column made a loud thumping noise in the park position and when turning the vehicle. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was 175,000. Ad.

11 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 04/15/2015

12 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 11/19/2014

I had the recall of the sensor on the electric power steering accomplished in October. I have had the loss of ps three times since upon acceleration and the problem is worse now than before the recall. The dealer indicates the problem now is the voltage spikes per TSB 08-02-32-005. This TSB indicates a defective coil causes voltage spikes in the electrical system thereby damaging the electric ps motor/module. The codes c0900, b1325, and c0176 were set. I spoke with gm with no avail. There is a TSB 10183 which extends the warranty to 10 years and 100,000 miles. This is with a loss of signal from the steering column. My VIN is not covered by this TSB. My contention is a loss of ps by any cause is a safety issue and gm should recall and fix it. The TSB admits the coil is defective as the TSB requires a replacement with a new enhanced coil and a ground strap added to the coil. This is a manufacture defect and should be corrected by gm. Any vehicle with this defective coil can have the electric ps damaged at any moment without knowing that the failure has occurred. Again, I believe this is a safety issue. What is the point of gm replacing the sensor because of a safety issue and will not correct other issues that cause the same safety issue. Why would one fault be more of an issue than another causing the same safety issue? I have ordered the new coil and related parts to correct the voltage spikes which could damage other parts. That still leaves the motor/module which the dealer indicates needs to be replaced.

13 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2013

The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu maxx. The contact stated that the steering wheel emitted a clucking noise while making a turn. The dealer performed a diagnostic test which located the failure in the steering wheel drive shaft and column. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 76, 000 and the current mileage 78,000.

14 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 09/11/2012

The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated that there was an intermittent failure with the connection of the fuse box and the connecting screws. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who replaced the screws and the fuse box. The contact also experienced a failure with the power steering. The steering wheel was tight and the contact experienced extreme difficulty turning the steering wheel left or right. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who replaced the steering column. The remedy corrected the failure. The contact had been waiting for months to have the vehicle repaired according to NHTSA campaign numbers: 14v252000 (electrical system, electronic stability control, exterior lighting, service brakes, hydraulic, vehicle speed control) and 14v224000 (power train). The dealer did not provide a specific date for when the parts would become available. The manufacturer was notified. The contact also indicated that the vehicle idled high and it was difficult to change gears. The approximate failure mileage was 62,000.

15 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 03/14/2012

The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu. While driving approximately 20 mph, a chime sounded inside of the vehicle as the power steering warning indicator illuminated. Immediately, there was a complete loss of power steering. The vehicle was maneuvered to the side of the road where the engine was turned off. The failure recurred four times. The engine was restarted and the vehicle resumed as normal. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated the power steering column and intermediate shaft would need to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the malfunction. The approximate failure mileage was 155,000.

16 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 06/02/2011

I have a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu maxx. We had experienced loss of power steering at 87017 miles. Dealer replaced power steering column under policy 10183. Car has again had the same problem now at 101754 miles. Policy 10183 states that gm will pay for repairs but only up to 100,000 miles. I'm 1754 miles over this. However it was repaired before only 14,737 miles ago. Is gm repairing this defect with the same defective components? if so this endangers everyone and is unethical. This car has had numerous front end issues including replacing the steering rack several times (clunking noise when turning - now also back again), wheel hub and bearing issues and steering column replaced at 50425 miles for a failed torque sensor. We are concerned that the vehilce may not be safe to drive. Gm should be re-engineering these components and replacing the failed ones with new design. This needs to be a recall for all impacted models before someone is killed or injured due to loss of power steering which can be very sudden and dramatic. Gm claims it is not a safety issue. However, someone unprepared or without upper body strength can get into serious trouble very quickly. Who will make the decision to do the right thing with this problem? apparantly this is well documented with other gm products as well.

17 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2011

The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu maxx. While driving various speeds, the contact stated that the steering column became hard to move. The dealer advised the contact that the vehicle was no longer under warranty and offered no further assistance. The manufacturer was notified and the contact was awaiting a response. The vehicle was taken to a private mechanic who advised her to take the vehicle to a dealer. The current mileage was 130,000 and the failure mileage was 129,000.

18 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 10/08/2010

Tl contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu. While the contact was driving approximately between 10-15 mph, a chime sounded inside of the vehicle and the power steering warning indicator illuminated, followed by the steering wheel locking. The vehicle was driven into a parking space safely. The engine was turned off and restarted. The steering wheel began to operate properly for thirty seconds. Then the failure reoccurred repeatedly. The manufacturer was notified and they stated there was not a recall related to the defect. The manufacturer issued a 100,000 mile extended warranty pertaining to the steering column, however, the vehicle exceeded the required mileage. The contact scheduled an appointment with the dealer for the steering column replacement. The failure mileage was 100,009.

19 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 09/28/2010

This is in relation to what I've seen in a few crash iihs crash videos. I was hit on the left side, with the impact range from the left front wheel to the outside mirror. I was beginning to make a left turn when I was struck. The impact on the steer tire caused the steering wheel to spin quickly to the right as it absorbed the energy from the collision. The steering wheel turned so violently rightward from the force of the vehicle hitting it, that I ended up with a fractured right elbow and torn ligaments in my right hand - injuries sustained from a collision on the left. I have seen the same thing in a few iihs crash test videos. In a few of their videos, the steering column shifts significantly to the left or right so there ends up being no contact between the dummy's head and the steering wheel airbag. I don't know if there is communication between NHTSA and the iihs, or to what standards are set, as I've seen some truly disturbing iihs videos on brand new cars; disturbing enough that I'm surprised that the vehicle is let into the market. Thanks for taking the time to read this. My right side injuries seemed very strange until seeing some of the iihs videos in slow motion that explained how this happened.

20 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 09/23/2010

1. I was passing a car up hill on a curve in the road. When I accelerate hard I loss my power steering. I had to applied more pressure on the wheel to get around the car I was passing but half way around the car the power steering kicked back in but because of the extra pressure I was applying on the steering wheel I over steered and almost hit the guard rail. This was on a very busy highway in the new york city area and everyone was traveling at high speed. 2. I experience a loss of power steering assist caused by electrical input signals within the steering column assembly. 3. Gm sent a letter too my home stating they are aware of the problem but will only fix it if the car has less than 100,000 miles. My car is over that limit. Gm says it is not a recall. This is a safety issue. The power steering cuts out at high speeds.

21 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 09/21/2010

The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated that the steering locked up several times while the accelerator pedal was depressed. The dealer replaced the steering column September 21, 201 but the failure continued. The failure mileage was approximately 49,000 and the current mileage was approximately 79,000.

22 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2010

My 2005 Malibu started making a thumping sound coming from the steering column when turning left or right. It seems to occur as the steering wheel returns to center. I have researched this enough to know that if it gets worse I probably will need to replace the steering column. I called gm customer service and told them that I considered this to be a very serious safety problem (based on my research of numerous vehicles with failed steering components) they were very sympathetic but totally unconcerned about the problem. I was told that they would not pay for any repairs because the vehicle was out of warranty. My car has just over 42,000 miles. I strongly believe that this is a safety related defect in the steering column.

23 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 07/27/2010

I have a problem with my power steering in my 2005 chevy Malibu that has been diagnosed as a known defect with the power steering column. I called and spoke with a NHTSA representative today and he said it was a known defect on many chevy models where the cobalt was recalled but my 2005 Malibu has not been recalled. I am scared to death to drive this vehicle. I've read online about accidents happening as a result of this problem as a result of power steering loss. Please can you resolve this problem with Chevrolet so they issue a recall. I drive my kids in my car and I am afraid to drive it. Updated ivoq 08/31/jb.

24 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 06/17/2010

My son was driving my 2005 chevy Malibu to work & the "power steering" light came on & was having troubles getting the car to turn corners. He called me; I told him to get fluid. Upon getting fluid & reading the manual, he discovered that it was an "electric" power steering & get to your gm dealer immediately. We did so & was told the power steering column was shorting out & needed replaced. There had been no recall on this for the Malibu but had for the pontiac g6, cobalt & others. The dealership we went to replaced & I had to pay out of my pocket $644. 86. I feel this should have been a recall & that the safety of my son driving at the time put his life in danger. I would like reimbursed by gm for this expense & a recall done so that other Malibu owners do have incur any injuries and/or expense for replacement. I am sending a letter to gm as well as a copy of the letter to NHTSA even though I am submitting an email complaint. Thank you for your attention in this matter.

25 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2010

The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu maxx. The contact was driving approximately 45 mph downhill when the brakes were applied and the steering wheel collapsed. The contact was able to pull the steering column back up but had to hold it upward while driving. The failure persisted. Later, the contact purchased a repair kit directly from the manufacturer at a local auto repair shop. After the repair kit was installed, the contact stated that the failure did recur but not as often as before the kit was installed. The dealer was contacted and advised there were no recalls for the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 60,000.

26 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 03/29/2010

Over a period of about 6 weeks, our 2005 chevy Malibu first start to display a power steering fluid low message on the instrument panel (on digital text readout). This vehicle does not have a fluid reservoir, it used electronic assist on the power steering. Initial, no noticeable issues were detected while driving the car. One day this display started to occur about every 30 seconds, with a beeping audit alert. Our daughter was driving the vehicle that afternoon, and when turning a corner there was a loss of power steering assistance. This was in town at low speeds, she was able to recover from the incident with no accident or damage. The vehicle was taken to the nearest dealership, keys Chevrolet for repairs. Repair order states "tested and found failed steering column motor". This vehicle was purchased used at about 39. 000 miles, and was about 125 miles out of a gm certified 12 mo / 12,000 mile warranty. Gm did not cover the repair, paid bill for total of $660. 05 from our oen funds. In an internet review, this problem seems to be a common issue with owners of this year and model, and several people have reported damage after crashing into guardrails, etc. When this problem occurs.

27 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 01/15/2010

My son was driving my 2005 Malibu when the power steering went out. A warning light indicated the problem to him. He was able to pull to the side of the road where he restarted the car. The car reset itself but the same problem occurred again. It was at that point I told him to take to a dealer to have the car inspected. Upon inspection it was discovered that the power steering column needed to be replace. In December of 2007 general motors sent me a letter detailing possible problems with the power steering system. What happened to my car was what was outlined in the letter. The letter said not to take the car in to be inspected if I didn't have any problems at that time. It also said that they would reimburse me if I had any problems with the car but with a deadline date. I had to take the car in by December of 2008 and the car had to have 70,000 or less miles on it. Since I did not have any problems with the car up to that point I did not take the vehicle in to be inspected. The problem with the car occurred in January of 2010. I had the car repaired because it wasn't safe to drive in the condition it was in. I contacted gm with my concerned and asked for reimbursement. I was turned down because the problem came after the deadline outlined in the letter.

28 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 12/11/2009

12/2006 I purchased a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu. On three occasions in 2007 I experienced a "loud knocking noise" in the steering column of my vehicle and the first two times, it was not completely fixed and finally after the 3rd time they said it was fixed. Until 12/11/2009 when while I was driving, my "power steering" warning flashed across my clock screen and my steering wheel suddenly locked up and I was unable to turn my vehicle. Then on 12/21/2009, I was pulling out of a parking lot and again, the same thing happened 3 times within an hour. I found out from aaa that Chevrolet(gm) had printed a service bulletin regarding this particular problem with the 2005 Chevrolet Malibus and I immediately took my car to steve moore Chevrolet at 9325 south boulevard, charlotte, nc -- at which time they informed me after inspecting the car, that my whole steering column had gone bad. On 1/13/2010, I had to pay $792. 00 to have this repaired and I feel that since this was a problem that gm was aware of, I should be reimbursed for the expense that I've incurred as well as the inconvenience I was caused due to gm not being willing to extend coverage for this repair.

29 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 12/11/2009

Steering column shakes and moves on its own then power steering pulled to the left and power steering went out almost crashing into highway barrier. If it happened to my wife she would not have been able to recover and would have hit the barrier at highway speeds, probably killing her and the kids. Power steering comes and goes at any time I never know when it will go out. Dealership will have to replace the entire steering column for about $2,000. This is an obvious issue since there are several complaints on this year of Malibu and there has been 2 tsbs on this particular issue and they will not extend the mileage more than 70k. This is a safety issue due to the fact that you never know when the power steering is going to go out and what the steering column is going to do. This causes an unsafe condition and the probability if having an accident is great since it is directly related to the steering and steering column.

30 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 12/10/2009

I have had several problems with my power steering. It just went out all of a sudden this morning. I almost had an accident. There was an error message on the dash stating "power steering" and the steering column got really tight and was very hard to turn. I investigated and noticed that there have been several complaints for the 2005 chevy Malibu power steering issues. I called the gm dealership and also had a diagnostic done and the problem was the power steering module. I'm really upset because this is the second time this has happened. I'm very afraid to even drive the car because this could occur at any time which can cause and huge accident. The dealership informed me that they would not be able to assist me because I have more than 100, 000 miles on my car. This is totally not fair. I asked the representation (peter) what if I have an accident. He stated that there is really nothing he could do. Out of all of the reports on the power steering issues it's about time something gets done.

33 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 10/23/2009

The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated that when depressing the accelerator pedal, the steering wheel would lock and the vehicle would abnormally pull to either the left or right. The failure was constant. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that the ignition coil would need to be disconnected and the steering column would need to be replaced. The contact called the manufacturer but no assistance was provided. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 76,000 and the current mileage was approximately 91,000.

34 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 10/22/2009

On October 22, 2009, while driving on the highway, steering column in car began making popping noise when turning in either direction. (vehicle mileage at time of this incident just over 52,000) some loss of steering control experienced. No warning light or notification from vehicle. Vehicle was immediately taken to a mechanic. Steering column replaced for a cost over $650. This is the second steering column replacement on this vehicle, which is a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu. The first replacement was done at 25,145 miles on February 13, 2008 was done within the warranty period by dealership.

35 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 10/11/2009

I have an issue with the steering column popping in my 2005 chevy Malibu (62,000 miles). After researching this issue online I am unsure of what action to take to repair it. Almost every post indicates that after repaired, the popping started again. Have also read posts of drivers losing control of vehicle because of this issue. I am hoping that gm will respond with a recall since there seems to be many issues with this. I am concerned about the safety of any passengers in my vehicle, especially my 5 year old daughter.
