4 Steering Pinion Shaft problem

Failure Date: 12/08/2012

Today we driving through a parking lot and trued to turn and heard a popping noise, and then lack of steering. The steering wheel turned but the wheels did not. Had to call a tow truck at a cost of $88. 00 and took it to my local chevy dealer. The diagnosed the problem as the steering intermediate shaft bolt broke and also the airbag sensor. The total cost of this repair $88. 00 for the tow truck, $1500. 00 for the repair and 2 1/2 days without the car. We have had this popping noise for a while and no one could figure out what it was. Some dealers said we needed to replace the complete rack and pinion steering system, others said it just needed greased. We chose to grease it and the noise went away for a while. So far I have replaced the power steering motor, which gm reimbursed me for about 1 year after I had it repaired. It seems like there are many complaints about this problem. It has been a good car except for these constant problems. Something needs to be done so gm will fix these issues.

5 Steering Pinion Shaft problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2009

On 8/29/09 I asked my mechanic to listen to the clunking sound made when the steering wheel was turned left and right. He checked and said it was the rack and pinion. I have had this problem before and had 2 steering columns replaced and the steering shaft. Now it's the rack and pinion. The above incidents were covered under warranty but not now. I checked for recalls but there are none. I have seen many complaints about the same thing on car stats. Can't something be done by chevy before someone gets killed.

9 Steering Pinion Shaft problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2006

I purchased my 2005 chevy Malibu maxx LS as a "program car" thinking it was the next best thing to a new car. I guess I was wrong. Since purchasing the vehicle in April 2006 I have had consistent trouble with my front end. I have had to take it to the dealer for warranty repairs four times! now at 50,500 miles my front end is acting up again. The last time I had my repairs done I was out of warranty and called gmac and asked for a repurchase. Gmac contacted my dealer and returned a call to me stating that I should try another dealer they could not get anywhere with my current dealer. I was not surprised after being told by the shop leader that"his wife's car did the same thing and that the best thing I could do is drive it till its paid for! I have had it with this car and the service my local dealer . I love gmac and I wish they would be more aggressive at dealing with bad dealerships. My dealership made me feel stupid and like I was bothering them. I am still paying on my Malibu but am looking to trade but I am so scared that I will just gain a whole new problem from another vehicle. . . What do I do?.
