38 Power Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 11/25/2013

The power steering failed while I was driving, and I almost hit a car at intersection while attempting to turn to the right when the steering wheel locked up. There are numerous complaints online about this same issue and there was special coverage adjustment #10183 (July 20, 2110) power steering assist, but my VIN # was not included in this coverage, even though the problem described in the coverage is the same. A diagnostic scan at dealership verified code co545- power steering module. The part that had to be replaced on my car was part # 25933396- steering column, as listed in the special coverage. I have been in email/phone contact with gm since the incident. As of a phone call today, they refuse to cover the cost of faulty steering column or the labor to have it replaced. The total bill was $645.

39 Power Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 11/03/2013

When starting the car in the garage, there were 4 chimes, and a message on the dic 'power steering. ' the electric power steering had failed and was extremely difficult to back the car out of the garage. The car was then shut off and restarted with no recurrence of the problem. It happened again 3 days later, same problem. Then again, 4 days later, same situation. We have notified gm of the situation. To us it is a very dangerous problem. There was a recall in canada with gm cars with this problem and the steering column was replaced. Why doesn't gm recognize that this problem exists in the USA? as I stated, it does not occur all the time. We were told to take the car to our Chevrolet dealer but unless the problem occurs at the dealer, there is no way that they can detect the problem. The computer only stores 'error codes' for a short period of time. We are fearful of driving this car.

40 Power Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 10/10/2013

The contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated that while driving approximately 30 mph, the power steering assist failed as the warning indicator illuminated and the warning alarm sounded. The vehicle was turned off and upon restarting, the vehicle resumed normally. The failure was recurring. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who informed the contact that the torque control and steering column assembly would need to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the defect. The approximate failure mileage was 41,000.

41 Power Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2013

My vehicle lost electronic power steering (eps) assistance when being operated in an underground parking garage. The vehicle gave an audible alert and warning lights displayed on the dashboard. The problem persisted after turning the vehicle on and off several times. Because the parking garage contained tight corners and required slow speed operation, I could not safely operate the vehicle out of the parking garage. The next day, the eps worked without a problem. This unpredictable and intermittent power steering failure is well documented in 2006 Malibu maxx vehicles. In fact, Chevrolet has extended warranties and conducted special customer service campaigns to select 2006 Malibu maxx owners to remedy the defective eps. Even though it is the same make, model and year as other vehicles determined to be defective, my vehicle's VIN falls outside of the range identified by Chevrolet. The VIN range identified by Chevrolet is insufficient. Owners like myself who operate vehicles outside of the VIN range are not being alerted to the possibility of defective steering components. The eps components are known to be defective in 2006 Malibu maxx vehicles and should to be recalled.

A couple of months ago they came out with the same recall, a if repairs wewe already made you would get reimbursed I feel im due back that 700 dollars and gm says im not. The work was don at taylor Chevrolet in taylor michigan, repairs were made on 8/01/13/ invoice # cvc275940.

44 Power Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 03/02/2013

Around March 2013, I first began to encounter problems with my power steering. It began at a low speed with a chime, a message display saying to check the power steering, and my wheel locking up (power steering fail). At the time, I did not think much of it because after restarting the car, the power steering seemed fine. After this incident, there were many times when the chime would sound and the message would flash but the power steering still seemed to work. I took my car in for other issues and had this checked out at the same time. The trouble code in the system was c0545 for torque sensor input failure. My mechanic explained that this was a common problem and even checked for a recall at that time. I left with my car that day due to having to wait for parts. Two days later while driving 45mph, the power steering entirely failed. It felt as if my wheel locked entirely. Luckily there were not many cars on the road and I was able to direct it into a parking lot. My car was taken back in immediately and they had to replace the entire steering column. This repair cost around $500. In July 2014, it was brought to my attention that gm finally issued a recall for this problem. So, I called gm to to submit my information to be reimbursed. I was told that only some 2006 Malibus were being recalled for this issue and that my 2006 Malibu was not one of them. . . Even though my 2006 Malibu had the problem they were recalling for! come to find out, this has happened to many other 2006 Malibu owners. Needless to say, gm has done a terrible job correcting a serious mistake.

45 Power Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 03/06/2012

Power steering intermittently fails on vehicle. Resets after turning car off.

46 Power Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 02/21/2012

I was getting ready to make a left turn onto a side road and the power steering failed. There was no hint of failure prior to the failure. A power steering notice appeared on the dash after the failure, no warning ring tones or sound given. I bought this car used from a Chevrolet dealer when it had appx. 36,000 miles on it. I was never notified by Chevrolet or the dealer about this problem, which seems to be rampant. I researched this issue on the internet and it appears that thousands of people are having this problem with various year Chevrolet models. This problem can cause injury or death. Gm should be forced to issue recalls for all models affected at no charge to the consumer. That is the only fair and proper solution to the problem.

47 Power Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 01/30/2012

The power steering went out when my wife was on her way home and was attempting to turn down our street. The bulletin says that when this power steering assist fails, the vehicle can still be safely turned, but I take exception to that. My wife is of average strength and if someone had been walking on our street she couldn't have steered clear of them or if a car was parked when she turned there would have been an accident. I had the car in the gm dealership service at 100,000 miles for front end issues and had over $1000. 00 of repairs including new front brakes and rotors. I feel that whenever a vehicle comes in that has a special coverage listed that is as potentially dangerous as this, the system should be replaced. When it failed completely it had 106,000 miles and we are told by gm that we are out of luck for any help. This problem is like russian roulette and even though it resets itself when turned off and back on, it may go out again in a week, a month or an hour and cannot be driven with confidence. I am very disappointed with gm that they won't at least cover some of this repair. This is not the type of problem that goes out gradually as to alert you of an issue, but rather all at once and takes you totally by surprise. I'm sure accidents have occurred because of this defect and is much more serious than gm makes it out to be. They should either fix the problem parts or at least cover a part with proven defects even if it is just past their mileage.

50 Power Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 01/02/2012

Upon slight acceleration (I. E. Merging from exit ramps or pulling out into traffic) the power steering fails. Warning sound chimes. Steering becomes unassisted without power for several seconds. This has occurred several times. I contacted the local dealer recalls/fix and was informed that I would have to pay them a service fee to look at the car for them to try to duplicate the problem. This is a gm/chevy problem and I should not have to pay for them to address this obvious safety risk/issue. This should be recalled/fixed immediately!!.

51 Power Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2011

Power steering failure. Had began to drive out of a parking lot when power steering went out and was very difficult to turn steering wheel. Car has electrical power steering. I tried to step on brake, shift gear into park then back in drive but still could not get steering wheel to turn. Was extremely difficult and would have been very dangerous if had happened while driving on a freeway with my kids. I have found a multiple sites with the same similar complaints about the 2006 chevy Malibu from people who had this happened to them. They have even had mechanics try to troubleshoot and charge them horrendous amounts for repairs but continued having issues after either the steering wheel column was replaced, coils and harnesss were replaced, or other parts that mechanics tried troubleshooting. Something must be done to issue a recall for this problem to be corrected before it does take someone's life.

52 Power Steering Failed problem

Pulled up to the stop sign leaving my street getting ready to pull onto busy highway . . . . Steering wheel went completely stiff. . . . Power steering failure message came on the dash. . . . Managed to turn it around and park it back in my drive way . . . . I have been reading all the other chevy Malibu owners describing the same problem and how it has cost them hundreds even thousands to get fixed and some still did not fix the problem. . . . I do not have hundreds to pour into my car. . . . Can barely make payments and insurance. . . . . I do not know what to do. . . .

54 Power Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 07/16/2011

We were driving the car on a twisting highway in rural montana when the electronic power steering failed. With no assist we almost missed a corner. The steering wheel required extreme pressure to complete the turn. The power steering returned again without warning. If the power steering returned during the time a lot of pulling pressure was being applied to the steering wheel we may have gone across the center line and impacted the front of a kenworth truck. If after a head on accident the power steering may again be working if checked. This is a fearful situation.

56 Power Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2011

When making turns, whether left or right, the power steering in this car fails. Luckily I am one of the fortunate ones (so far) that it goes out at lower rates of speed. A couple of times, I barely made it into the parking lot and avoided hitting any cars while making that turn. The thing that I fear is that when it starts to snow or if I have to make some evasive moves to avoid objects, the power steering will go out and I will be unable to correct it.

59 Power Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2011

Power steering fails. It started when I went to leave work. I started my car, and the power steering immediately failed and "power steering" showed up on the dic. I tried to turn the wheel, and it was almost like the steering wheel was locked up. I turned the car off, and then back on, and it was fine. Then, this past weekend, it did the same exact thing. I again, turned the car off, then on, and it was fine. I drove to the closest chevy dealership, and of course they were closed (it was new years day). I went to leave the dealership, turned my wheel slightly to the right and power steering failed again! turned the car off, then back on, drove to the stop sign, turned the wheel slightly to the left, and power steering failed again. I'm very scared this will happen unexpectedly while I'm driving home from work on the interstate. Something should be done, especially with how many similar complaints I've seen posted all over the net!.

60 Power Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 10/29/2010

I have a Chevrolet Malibu maxx and the power steering has failed on 2 separate occasions. The first incident was when I was taking a left turn and the power steering failed half way through the turn. Luckily I was able to pull off into a parking lot and turn off the vehicle. There was a ding and the front displayed "power steering. " the next day when reversing out of a parking lot I had the same thing happen although this time the steering wheel shimmied, then the ding, failure of power steering, and the display. I was once again able to turn off the vehicle and restart. Upon restarting the power steering resumed. Since these two incidents I have noticed that the steering wheel jerks a little with any turns. I am so glad I was not going at a fast speed or in heavy traffic as an accident definitely could have been caused. I have called and reported it to Chevrolet and set up an appt with a dealer on Monday. Chevrolet stated that it is infact a "special coverage on power steering" and in other cases have involved replacing the entire steering column. I am shocked that this has not been a recall and that other customers are put in this danger. Thank you for looking further into this.
