Chevrolet Silverado owners have reported 7 problems related to automatic transmission column shift (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
The contact stated vehicle would not go into park. He thought he had put the car into park but when he began to exit the vehicle it started moving. When he looked at the shift indicator it was in reverse. He checked to see if there was something lodged in the column shift. The contact said he did not find anything lodged in the column shift. At this point the vehicle would only go into reverse. But, yesterday when he was inspecting the vehicle noticed it would only go into first and second gears. The vehicle has not been inspected by a dealer to determine the cause of the problem.

Upon parking, had slight difficulty placing vehicle into park gear position on very slight incline in driveway of home. Stepped out of vehicle, returned a few minutes later to find vehicle had rolled into pole. Attempted to start vehicle, but would not start, tried to put vehicle in neutral, and column shift was very loose. Applied parking brake and contacted dealer for tow next morning. Dealership determined the shift cable had broken, replaced with new shift cable. Only explanation offered was plastic sheath had cracked allowing cable to kink, they stated initially it sometimes happens, but they did not explain why. I am very concerned that if vehicle were parked on street on a slight grade it would have rolled downhill possible causing damage or injuring someone.

On 2/28/02, I reported to gm that my 1999 Chevrolet Silverado was jerking & binding when the vehicle rounded corners or in a 180-degree turn. A service manager took this vehicle for a test drive by himself in the parking lot and did a couple of turns and a 180-degree turn. He also found that it did have a jerky or jumping movement as it went into the turn. This front wheel binding may be some type of design irregularity or flaw, which occurs while in the 4-wheel drive mode. Since the service manager considers it a normal condition, and nothing can be done at his level to correct this issue, I believe that this irregularity should be further investigated. Why, because these erratic movements could jerk, bind, or stop the vehicle at any speed if the steering wheel is being turned and the vehicle in motion. Nowhere in my operator's manual, or on the dash is there any sticker which identifies that this vehicle while in a 4-wheel drive mode will jerk or bind while turning corners.

Transfer case failure while driving. Vehicle taken to dealer, and informed consumer that a transfer case mode switch had to be replaced, repairs were done. Feel free to provide any further information.
Vehicle was in 4- wheel low and consumer was in back of it, vehicle moved on its own, went down hill, and hit a tree. Dealer found vehicle had jumped from 4- wheel low into neutral due to the linkage not adjusted rightly. Damage to bvehicle was $ 6000. Consumer was injured in accident.

While in 4 wheel drive front end binds and comes to a stop when wheels are turned.
During blizard road conditions on way to work 4-wheel drive did not engage. I think this gave me a false sense of security and should be handled as a safety issue.
