On the way to my doctor's appt, I noticed that my truck did not shift to 2nd very well, but I parked, and when I was attempting to back out of parking space, the truck would not go into reverse. On the way to dealership (rick hendrix Chevrolet), I noticed that it would not shift into 4th (overdrive). When I had the guys check my truck, they told me that the 2nd, 4th and reverse gears had gone out on my truck: a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 4dr extended cab LS 4wd 5. 3ltr engine. Which I have had for 1 year and 6 months. The dealership would not repair it unless I pay $1800! there is currently no recall on this problem, but there is a kit available for the dealership to fix it! there are many complaints I have found on the internet about this specific problem. . . I am lucky so far. . . I have not been injured or my 8 y/o daughter who I have full custody of and am concerned about her well being when riding in my vehicle! I guess people have to die in order for a recall to be made by general motors.

About 3 or 4 moths ago, there was a light that came on in vehicle that said transmission fluid hot. This happened on the interstate. Also, there was a vehicle warning light that instructed driver to pull over and let vehicle idle. Owner took it to dealer, who reported that there was more than normal metal shavings in the transmission fluid pan, and that the clutch could be going out. Then, dealer changed fluid and filter, and instructed the owner that he could continue driving it until it absolutely had to be repaired. The owner continued driving the vehicle, and has hard shifting. Owner called the dealership, who reported that could be a symptom of the computer trying to compensate fort he transmission which was failing. Then on the 12th of July 2005 the message came on again transmission fluid hot. Then owner contacted gm directly, who tried to sell the owner a new truck, but offered no assistance to owner with transmission problem. The vehicle was going to be repaired. The vehicle was regularly serviced with some service records available. There were no other major issues with the truck.

I noticed a month after purchasing my 2005 Silverado z71 extended cab that if the key was turned to the 'acc' position, this disables the lock that requires the brake pedal to be depressed fully to shift the vehicle out of 'park'. I brought this to the attention of friedns and family who have gm trucks and SUV's. All these vehicles (2004-2005) do the exact same thing. I took my concern to web forums. Though members thought I was nuts, they tried this on their vehicles and the same thing happens. It seems to be vehicles that have changed the acc location on the ignition. The acc location used to be turned back toward the driver, but now it is one click toward the dash now. This info is not in the owners manual. If parked on any incline and the vehicle is knocked out of gear you would have difficult time braking or steering.

Last Feb. Purchased a new Silverado truck. Gm replaced the transmission at 480 miles. Ever since then I have had a vibration in the rear. I have had the truck to the shop on several occasions. The problem is intermittent and they can't locate the problem whenever I take it in. The problem is most common at speeds of 65-70 mph. The vibration is so bad that the mirrors rattle. Also lately, I have a different vibration (also intermittently) at slower speeds while going up hills. Dealer also unable to diagnose unless the problem occurs while they have the truck.
My 2002 Chevrolet Silverado z-71 transmission went out with only 45,000 miles on the truck. I had it repaired and was told it is a very common problem with Chevrolets and GMC trucks.
Transmission shifts hard. . . Was taken in and transmision was rebuilt due to unusual wear. Less than 5 months the transmision lost 2nd gear and reverse.
The support cables that retained the tailgate broke while loading a snow trailer, which caused the tailgate to collapse. No injuries to report. The dealer was notified. The dealer informed the consumer that the vehicle was not covered under a recall. The consumer stated that there were no weight restrictions posted for the capacity of the endgate. The consumer was loading a craftsman 5 hp compact snow thrower 165 lbs on the truck. The selling dealer offered to cover the cost of replacing the broken cables at their expense. The consumer stated the problem has nothing to do with the selling dealership but everything to do with general motors the producer of the materials used in the manufacture of this vehicle. The consumer stated that he removed the transmission oil pan for fluid drainage. A transmission filter that would fit this vehicle as ordered from the selling dealer would not work with the transmission oil pan originally installed on the vehicle. The consumer had to purchase the correct transmission fluid pan that should have come on the vehicle.

Driving down the road, some loud sound. Can't go in revserse at all. I only have 42000 miles on the truck. The transmission does not shift into 1st gear correctly, and has a hard time shifting into high gears, and the rpm stay high running in the truck. Need a new transmission. Chevrolet dealer that I bought it from call the 800 number for gm and they are paying for the over 3000 payment for a new transmission. Since it should not have broke at that time. Give me a break. I will not buy another gm car in my lifetime.
2003 and up Chevrolet Silverado 1500 4. 8l automatic
I found I am able to shift the transmission out of park without the engine running and with the key in the accessory position. This is from no key inserted to inserting key and rotating to the accessory without going to the run or start positions. This can be done without depressing the brake pedal. This has also been verified on numerous 2003, 2004 and 2005 Silverados with automatic transmission but unknown engines at several dealerships. I was told everytime this is normal operation but was unknown to them prior to me bringing the problem up to them. This problem is consistent and occurs everytime attempted. Possible scenerio involves children in the vehicle with the key set to the accesory position to permit the radio to play while the driver exits to perform some task. The children could hit the shift lever and move it out of park permitting the vehicle to move. Again, this is possible without the engine running and without the brake pedal depressed. With the key in the run position, the brake pedal must be depressed to move the shift lever but never with the key in the accessory position.

2002 chevy Silverado 1500 4x4 5. 3l transmission. Sun gear. . At 75000 miles the gear failed in a parking garage when I parked my truck I had appox. 2 feet between my truck and the wall. When I returned to my vehicle the trucks front bumper was touching the wall. Thankfully it wasn't parked so it would have rolled down the ramp. After starting my vehicle it did not have reverse and after getting it out of the ramp it would not shift into 2nd gear. I spoke with the dealer that I had purchased the truck from and he said that it was a common problem. Also I talked to other people that have the same transmission and they have had the same problems. I thenk there should be a recall on this because if I had something in tow or the parking brake were to fail it could posibly injure or kill some one if it were to roll away. I had to have my transmission rebuilt and the transmission shop said that it was a common problem and that gm has come out with a revised part that is hardend.
We have had several thing go wrong with our truck. We have had the expandable mirrors replaced once and fixed several times, the transmission was rebuilt, the speedometer quit working and the memory does not recall the driver or seat position.
Consumer complained about a transmission problem. When driving transmission sounded and rode roughly. Consumer took the vehicle to dealer on three occasions . Dealer was unable to determine the cause of failure. Manufacturer was also contacted.

Transmission went of gear whenever the key is in the accessory position. This caused a collision.
I have a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado z71 pickup crewcab and a clunking began in the transmission around 2000 miles and has worsened. The truck now has 19,000 miles and the dealer said there was not a problem and it was normal for this truck. I know this is a problem from doing some searching on the internet and want to know what will be done to correct the problem.
Transmission shifts hard from 1st to 2nd gear. This may cause a loss of control of the vehicle on icy roads.
2002 chevy Silverado 1500 z71 5. 3l transmission sun gear. At 37260 miles the gear failed, my vehicle it did not have reverse, and it would not shift into 2nd gear. I had to have my transmission rebuilt and the transmission shop said that it was a common problem. The cost to me was $1963. 00 and if it is a known problem from the manufacturer then it should have been covered by general motors and not me or the other buyers of this model truck. Gm ought to reimburse us for the cost since they were aware of the problem and could have fixed it prior to the problem by recalls.
While driving 70 mph vehicle stalled. Consumer restarted the vehicle, and towed it home. Driver will contact the dealer in the near future.
Truck shifted into 3rd gear for no reason then would not shift back into 4th while on the highway almost causing me to be rearended. I purchased a this gm certified vehicle four month ago thinking I was getting a better than average vehicle. I spoke to a transmission shop and they said they they get a lot of the same problems and I would like general motors to repair it since they haven't fixed this problem with the 4l60 e transmission in the last 11 or so years they've used it.
When the vehicle sits on a grade it will roll backwards when in drive. The transmission will read a false neutral on level ground. The consumer took the vehicle to the dealership and they replaced the transmission, but the problem recurred. This vehicle has a 4l80e transmission. The problem started approximately a months after purchasing the vehicle. Has not hit anything yet, but has come close on several occasions. A service writer at groth brothers Chevrolet told consumer it was normal for the vehicle to do this. Consumer has a case open at general motors #1-258070464.
After towing a trailer and putting the vehicle in reverse vehicle jumped and tore a piece of rubber out of the tire. Dealer stated that the vehicle was repaired. However, the transmission jumped from second gear to reverse without warning. Consumer stated that the dealer said there was no code set, and to continue driving, but the consumer refused.
Three year old child took vehicle out of park and the vehicle rolled and crashed into the carport. The consumer requested compensation for the damage to the vehicle but was denied. The representative indicated that there was a design change therefore he could not received compensation.
Transmission shifted through all ranges while in first gear (low) would not down shift to pass.
Allison automatic transmission nsbu switch failure. Two other people in shop with same problem at same time. Dealer service writer and other mechanics state problem is very common and part should be recalled.
2004 Chevrolet Silverado experiencing problems with transmission. . . . . Transmission bangs when shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear and downshifts hard from 3rd to 2nd gear. Reported problem to dealer in February 2004 at 3796 miles. Repaired on March 2, 2004 as per bulletin 1430080. Problem recurred and was reported to dealer in October 2004, and dealer indicated it was normal as per bulletin 1430424. At this time, service manager provided bulletin 1538220 which stated that problem was corrected in transmission built after February 2004. Problem again recurred in November 2004 and March 2005, and dealer stated that it was just excessive drive line lash. Consumer reported this to gm, and they increased warranty terms to 5 years/75000 miles. Consumer claimed warranry was no help because if dealer won'r correct problem now they won'r correct it later.
Consumer complained about a transmission problem. The transmission would only move into third gear. The neutral safety switch was defective as per owner. The consumer had the switch replaced.
Loss of reverse and transmission at 54,000 miles. Started out going into 1st and 2nd very hard now this.
Hard shifting from 1st to 2nd gear - slipping into overdrive - eventually failing to upshift untill rpm reached aprx 3500.
Drive line "clunk". Appears to be too much play in the drive train. Clunking sound when automatic tran shifts. Been to two dealers 4 times. They say it's "normal". Talked to gm and they say it's "normal".
The driver started up the vehicle while pressing down accelerator pedal and the vehicle stalled. The driver had the vehicle towed to the dealer for analysis. The mechanic noticed the yoke to the transmission need replacing.
Consumer was complaining about a transmission problem. Transmission changed roughly when exiting off a ramp. Driver had to turn vehicle off and wait 5-10 seconds, then restart to reset the computer.

My 2000 chevy Silverado with 75000 miles transmision would not shift from 2nd gear to 3rd gear. The 3rd and 4th gear plate is burned out because chevy makes this part of a plastic resin instead of a aluminum plate.
While driving my truck on the freeway, the transmission did not shift higher than 2nd gear, while in (d). I have to slow down and drive off the freeway. This vehicle had all the scheduled services at my local dealer and this truck was driven like a car, no towing, no hauling. But, at 49k the transmission locks up. This is unacceptable for a $29k truck that is 3 yrs. Old! right now the service charge is $800 and that is to pull the transmission to find out what is wrong.
Clanking in transmission between 1 and 2.
2003 Chevrolet Silverado the truck will shift in 4 low while driving. The service 4 wheel drive light will come on. The truck has been to the dealer, dealer can not give reason why the truck does this or has been able to repair it. Sooner or later this truck will cause a accident when it pops into 4 low on its own.
