Automatic Transmission Torque Converter Problems of Chevrolet Silverado

Chevrolet Silverado owners have reported 9 problems related to automatic transmission torque converter (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 01/15/2020

Transmission shifts hard into gear when slowing down and extremely hard when towing 2,000lb empty trailer, currently at dealership to have new torque converter and pump installed. Dealership stated no metal shavings in transmission they believe. When accelerating engine rpms increase while vehicle speed decreases. Stereo constantly disconnects from wifi when streaming music. Wifi will continue to work for other devices. Voice commands work 80%ish of the time.

2 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 10/16/2019

The steering wheel vibrates at around 65 mph. It feels like you are rolling over rumble strips. The dealership balanced the tires, but the vibration continues. Researching the issue indicates it may be a problem with the torque converter.

3 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 02/22/2019

The transmission on this truck has not been right from the beginning. When starting in the morning it will do one of three things: surges and transmission skips, hesitate and then race or jump ahead, or chunk and thunk like it really doesn't want to go to work and shifts hard when it does. I keep asking when gm will take care of this problem and I keep getting the run around. I have brought it in 3x, have had diagnostics run, transmission flushed and of course it has not helped. I am now bringing it back to chevy dealer and now they say I have to do the next step according to gm which is put in a new torque converter. I bought a beautiful truck that runs like crap and I am very frustrated.

4 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 05/07/2018

8 speed transmission clunks when shifting into 2 gear and at times feels like you got rear ended. When it down shifts into the lower gears it's also clunks and is not smooth. This is happening when going at slow speeds and is worse after a cold start . The vehicle shifts fine at hwy speeds. I have already brought it to the dealership twice and problem is still there. Talking to other people with gm 8 speed transmission and they are having the same issue. 8 speed transmission needs recall. Possibly torque converter.

5 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2015 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 09/24/2015

Had been complaining since 2 days after purchase that transmission was shaking/shimmying/sputtering. Was pulling onto a county highway off of a residential type road (after picking up granddaughter from school - she was in truck) and truck bogged down & wouldn't go. Intersection is at top of hill and around a corner. Was clear when I started pulling out, but was almost hit by oncoming truck before I got my truck to get on across the intersection. Has been in shop twice to fix it. First time to double transmission flush. That didn't work. Next time a few weeks later, a technician hooked up a computer to my truck so he could manually shift gears while riding with me. He felt the issues and said he saw several problems. Dealership ended up replacing torque converter. Also replaced vlom manifold - whatever that is? that's what it says on work order. The problem still exists. I believe there are bulletins out on this truck's transmission already. I have talked to others who have had the same problem.

6 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 09/28/2012

This fault has been present since the first week of owning my 2012 Silverado crew cab lt equipped with the 5. 3 liter and 6 speed transmission. Upon slowing to a stop, the truck surges and lunges forward as the transmission downshifts between gears, and is most noticeable when traveling up or down hills. The failure mode can be technically described as the following sequence of events: 1. Slowing to a stop (coasting), engine begins riding out 4th gear (for example). 2. Apply brakes; transmission downshifts to 3rd, and engine rpms increase to compensate for dynamics of shifting. Torque converter immediately engages the engine to the wheels. As the engine is at a high rpm level, an accelerating load is applied to the wheels, while braking. 3. This creates an unintended surge of acceleration, which is then also noticeable through the remaining gears (truck slows, then surges, slows, then surges until coming to a complete stop). I have also verified that this is a common complaint in the online forums, and many people are experiencing this fault. In fact, one of the dealerships actually informed me that many of his customers go to an aftermarket shift program to avoid the issue. I have tried this, and it did not resolve the issue. Each time the transmission is evaluated at the dealership, the daps (digital parameters) are "reset" (according to the service shops), and the truck drives fantastically. However, roughly 10 miles later, it is back to exhibiting the exact same failure mode. Dealership has troubleshot this fault extensively, and has stated that this mode of operation is "normal" - I asked them to explain how forward acceleration during braking was "normal", and of course they could not.

7 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 08/20/2005

Truck will not move initially when put into drive or reverse after it has been parked and just been started . Automatic transmission seems to loose fluid in torque converter after setting. This has been since new and is getting worse.

8 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 02/26/2001

I own a 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 4x4 ext. Cab with a 5. 3 engine and have had, what seems to me, to be a strong vibration coming from the torque converter at 40-50 mph. Dealer tells me they can't find any vibration even though the mechanics can feel it when driving it. Also the rear leaf springs clunk going over even the smallest of bumps. Both have happened ever since I purchased the vehicle.

9 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 06/16/2000

While driving down the road vehicle shook and shimmied. Took vehicle to mechanic, and transmission/torque converter had to be replaced.
