Chevrolet Silverado owners have reported 8 problems related to transmission not go into gear (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
The 8-speed automatic transmission exhibits numerous issues. 1) when slowing down to under 10 mph, as if you were yielding to traffic and then pressing the throttle to accelerate the vehicle, two issues can occur. First, the vehicle's transmission can hesitate between gears, providing no power to the wheels. Second, when vehicle does shift into a gear, the vehicle can lurch forward unexpectedly as if you were hit from behind. There is sometimes an audible "clank" when this issue occurs. This issue can prevent a driver from successfully entering traffic due to loss of instant power to the wheels. 2) during low-speed acceleration, the vehicle can hesitate between the first three gears, providing no power to the wheels. It has a similar feel to a transmission that was slipping. This can cause a driver to over-correct the deficiency in power to the wheels by applying excessive throttle and cause an accident. 3) when proceeding slowly in stop and go traffic, the vehicle can shift up or down suddenly, causing the vehicle to lurch forward unexpectedly. There is sometimes an audible "clank" when this issue occurs. This can cause the vehicle to strike the rear of another vehicle, in tight traffic, if the driver isn't prepared to apply the brake when the event occurs. 4) when driving normally, the transmission may hesitate to downshift when the accelerator is applied as would be necessary when trying to pass a vehicle. This does not appear to be gear dependent. The loss of instant power can prevent the driver from successfully overtaking another vehicle in the event they need to conduct a passing maneuver.

Transmission cannot find gears when coasting or slowing down and then hitting accelerator. Very dangerous when it hesitates for seconds before finding the right gear and going, or it stays in too high of a gear instead of downshifting to accelerate and rattles. Happens every time I drive the truck, and many other people have the same issue. Gm doesn't care!.

Contact owned a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado. While driving consumer's vehicle began to pass another vehicle. When the vehicle went into passing gear consumer heard a loud noise. Consumer let off the gas and the vehicle shifted into another gear. While taking the vehicle to the garage consumer realized there was no reverse and it was shifting oddly. The service dealer stated the transmission will have to be repaired, but did not know the cause of the transmission failure. There had been no previous problems regarding the transmission and the vehicle has minimal usage. The warranty of the vehicle was for 3 years/36,000 miles, the vehicle has approximately 38,000 miles when this incident occurred.

I bought a new 2005 Chevrolet Silverado in may of 2005. A few weeks after owning my truck, and with less than 1,000 miles on it, I noticed the auto transmission would slip. It would only occur when I was accelerating from a stop. Basically, I would give the truck gas and the engine would rev up to about 2,000 rpm's, without the vehicle moving, and then it would all of the sudden make a loud thud sound and then lurch forward, as if it was not in gear and then all or the sudden put into drive. This can't be good for the transmission of the engine. I called the Chevrolet dealership and asked them if I brought my truck in if they could look at it and they said they would, but if they could not duplicate the problem or if there was not any check engine light on they would not be able to diagnose the problem to fix it. The slipping of my transmission has occurred about a dozen times. The problem is it works fine most of the time except when it slips. So I have no idea when it will happen. I could stop and accelerate 100 times and it won't slip. Then just out of the blue it will decide to slip, and make that terrible banging thud of the transmission engagement. I hope that Chevrolet finds out what this problem is and fixes it so I don't have to replace a transmission after my warranty ends after 3 years or 36,000 miles. Not to mention the safety hazard if I had to accelerate to get across traffic and my trucks transmission hesitated and I got into an accident of it.

At 33,000 miles, oct 2002 -approximately 55mph, acted like it was not in gear then the transmission fluid hot light came on. Immediately pulled off to side of road - checked transmission fluid, it checked ok and the light went off. Pulled back onto highway - it was fine. Immediately took to local dealership; they hooked it up to the computer and didn't find anything wrong. In Jan 2003, upon acceleration, around 25-30mph, it acted as though it wouldn't go into 3rd & 4th gear. Same as oct 2002, but nothing registered on the truck's message center this time. And this time, the problem didn't go away. I took to another local dealer - mechanic drove vehicle and noted the problems. Still, nothing registered on the truck's message center. Mechanic even hooked up the truck to his computer and drove it while it was still failing. To his suprise, nothing registered on his computer either. They overhauled the transmission - replaced 3rd & 4th gear. They adjusted the bill - as if I purchased extended warrenty. Contacted gm - they report there have not been any problems like this with these trucks. "sometimes this happens when people make things -it's unfortunate that it happened to you". After that call - I found this site and found a technical bulletin referring to this same problem. Very disappointed with only having 36,000 miles since March 1999.
