13 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 07/08/2011

The automatic 4 wheel drive shifts from 2 wheel high to 4 wheel low while driving. I have replaced encoder once and now does it again. This not uncommon in chevy p/u's. Was told by service writer this happened to a truck while it was going down road at 70mph and it destroyed power train. The person was lucky that they had teir seat belts on. Problem # 2 is sometimes the spedometerworks and sometimes it does not another common defect. When I worked for a plumbing company they had this some of their trucks. I also talked to a former gm mechanic and he said that these problems were common with chevt trucks. There are recalls for hub caps and lights but not for something as sreious as these 2 defects. How long before someone is injuried or dies before this is corrected?.

15 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 11/25/2010

While making a left turn from a 60 mph highway in my 2006 Chevrolet c1500 truck my right rear axle came completely out with tire still attached. Thank god I had slowed to about 20 mph to make the left turn when it happened or a crash could have resulted. I am reporting this because as I said I was on a highway going 60 mph and if the axle had come out at that speed it could have been bad. The failure seems to be that the end of the axle broke off where the keeper goes. I am going to have to have the axle replaced and I will have the old part. This happened on thanksgiving and I was very thankful that my son and I were safe. Like I said it could have been much worse.

16 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 07/10/2010

Safety issue with 2010 GMC/Chevrolet 1500 pickups with 6 speed automatic transmission. The issue involves driving one of these vehicles with the tow/haul mode turned on. If going down a hill at 55 to 65 miles per hour, actually any speed, by laying your foot on the brake pedal hard just hard enough to turn on brake lights these vehicles will begin downshifting. The one I own will go from 5th gear to 2nd gear in less than 10 seconds. At this point the tachometer will peg to the max and the rear tires will begin to slide. I have had this at the dealer twice and have been told this is normal and they recommend I don't use the tow/haul mode. My vehicle hit a small bump in the road once while this was happening and actually was completely sideways at 50 mph.

19 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 04/08/2010

I was going down the highway about 50 miles per hour. Heard a pop and my truck wheels kind of locked and then rolled on. I pulled over and got out and looked under the truck and found nothing. Went on to my location and when getting back in my truck I had no reverse. Had I had an 18 wheeler behind be this could have been a disaster. Have not put it in the shop yet. 2004 chevy z71 silverado.

20 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Purchased a new truck in 2006. The truck had just over 42000 original miles. The trucks warranty was 3 years 36 miles. And the transmission is shot which chevy is doing absolutely nothing. The transmission shop is telling me this is a really odd incident and that I should file a complaint with you.

21 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 11/13/2009

2003 thru 2007 gm full size trucks and vans. The automatic transmission shift lock control (formerly known as the brake transmission interlock (bsti)) does not operate with the key in the accessories position. Called gm and was told to take it in and have it diagnosed. Gm dealer checked it out and gave me a gm bulletin that says"the shift lock mechanism is only active when the ignition is in the run or on position. " I know that the years prior to 2003 and years after 2007 that is not possible to shift the transmission out of park with out the brake pedal applied with the key turned to the accessories position. If it was not a problem from 2003 to 2007 why did they change it and why wasn't it that way before? I think that this is a safety issue that could create serious injuries or worse.

22 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 11/28/2008

While driving down the interstate, my truck would not go into overdrive. A little farther down the road, while shifting into 3rd gear the truck would slip into gear. Eventually 3rd, 4th and od went out, the only gears that worked are 1st and 2nd. The dealer said it would cost over $2500 to rebuild because of the damage or replacement would cost $2800. The truck only had 85000 miles on it.

23 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 08/23/2008

I was heading down interstate running around 70 mph. Next thing I knew I was red line on my rpm and was slowing down. Had to call a tow truck cause transmission was tore slap out. I mostly drive about 70 miles round trip 5 days a week to my job other than it sets in the drive way. After a big tow bill to home I have to pay again to have it towed to the shop and find out it will be a $1800 repair. I have been a chevy owner all my life. Had a 98 model truck just like it went till I rolled 250,000 on it with only minor problems. And this one doesn't even make 85,000.

25 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 07/02/2008

The tranny in my 06 silverado quit shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear. My truck had 45,700 miles, just out of the warranty by 9,700. There was no warning signs leading up to the failure. Not even a message from the dash computer or a transmission light. Dealership said tranny wasn't putting enough pressure in the shift plates and it smoked a couple of them. Dealership also said they don't know what causes the problems it just happens. Luckily for me dealership called a rep and I only had to pay a $500 dollar deductible because my pickup was so well cared for and there was no reason for this to happen. So if this happens to you make sure you check into them or yourself calling a rep. $500 is cheaper than a rebuild or new tranny.

26 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 04/30/2008

The contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact accidentally realized that when the vehicle is in the off position, he is able to shift into drive and/or reverse. 27 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 03/28/2008

2 months after buying my vehicle the brake on my vehicle had a bad squeal. Which happens when it is very humid outside. I went to the dealer they said it was weather and my brakes getting run in. 1 month later the same from the dealer no problem with the brakes, service tech's say it looks fine. 1 month ago a mechanic at my work saw pitts in my brake rotors. 28 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 02/21/2008

I purchased a new chevy silverado ext. Cab 4x4 ltz and drove approximately 30 miles from the dealership. After traveling through an intersection I noticed smoke coming from the engine compartment. I proceeded approximately another 50 yards in an effort to find a safe place to pull over to investigate the problem. Before I could pull over the smoke increased and the interior of the vehicle almost immediately became filled with heavy smoke. I stopped in heavy traffic and used onstar to call for assistance then exited the vehicle and opened the hood to investigate the problem. I saw heavy smoke and flashes of fire coming from the left side of the engine near the catalytic converter. The fire extinguished itself shortly after turning the engine off and the smoke cleared and/or stopped after about five minutes. After the police and fire department cleared the vehicle to be moved, I contacted the dealership and got towed back. After a brief investigation the dealership service department stated that "a component of the transmission was either improperly installed at the factory during assembly or immediately failed in the first 30 miles that the vehicle had been driven. This failure resulted in transmission fluid being sprayed directly onto the catalytic converter thereby causing the fire. ".

31 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 05/25/2007

2006 Chevrolet silverado hybrid, upon coming to a stop light in the mountains of north carolina the hybrid vehicle shuts the motor off until until you remove your foot from the brake pedal. When you remove your foot from the brake pedal before you can place your foot on the accelerator the truck rolls backwards at a high rate of speed depending on the incline. Chevrolet customer service has said there is no fix for this flaw as of yet and expects us to continue driving the truck as is. I feel this is very unsafe and this vehicle design should never have been sold in the mountains. Thank you.

32 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 05/19/2007

We have a new 2007 Chevrolet silverado that has been a problem. When you gave it gas it would shift real hard, we took it to the dealership and the seals in the transmission had to be replaced. The truck was in the shop 2 or 3 days for that. The hard shifting was still there. We continued to drive it. A couple days later my husband was driving the truck, and it stalled on him while driving. We drove it for about a week like that until I called gmac to report to them what was going on with the truck. The women I talked with told me it was a saftey issue and needed to be taken into the dealership. We took it into the dealership everytime the truck would stall while driving and nothing showed up on any dashboard displays. When the dealership had it,they hooked a computer to it and drove it. It did stalled on them, and their computer registered a failure, but it showed no codes. The dealership said they had to contact gm to find out what to do. We needed our truck by Friday because of prior plans. We called gmac complaint line on Thursday to find out what was going to happen. We talked with the complaint department as well as their saftey deparment explaining everything that was going on and that we needed thetruck. They said there was really nothing they could do, and pretty much told us we could pick thetruck up, knowing it was already noted as unsafe to drive. On Friday the dealership put a new computer in it, and my husband picked it up. On Saturday my husband and I were driving on I-75 in the passing lane going 75 mph and the truck quit on us. We almost had an accident with a Jeep, along with almost going down a hill. I called gmac right away to let them know what happened, along with letting them know that the computer wasn't the problem. This truck was a major safety issue. I've explained my concerns with GMC over the last couple of days, and they didn't want to help us at all.

35 Automatic Transmission problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 07/18/2006

The vehicle is driven 1 hour at freeway speeds then when accelerating from a stop the 1-2 up shift slams into 2nd. The resulting hard upshift causes a forward uncontrolled lurch forward. This is particularly hazardous in rush hour stop and go traffic. Correction is a known gm issue TSB 01-07-30-023a. But not available at manufacturers financial participation if out of basic warranty. The issue is a design defect in material selection and needs to be replaced across the board. The lurching upshift is not an if it will occur on a vehicle but a when will it occur symptom. Research on the commonality of this defect can be researched through any search engine using the dtc p1870.
