Transfer case: vehicle has shifted to neutral while accelerating with 4 wheel drive not engaged. 4 wheel drive will engage and dis engage at random while driving. Is not safe! took it mechanic and was told I need to replace entire transfer case but is "ok to drive" and to contact general motors or a dealership. I'd like this noted in case I am in an accident. -javier saenz.

Wheels locked up. Garage states it is 4 wheel drive transfer case. Garage checked with gm for a recall and this issue is on recall for this type/year of truck but VIN is not included in the recall. Transfer case must be reprogrammed according to diagnostic test and gm confirmed that is the fix. This vehicle has just over 40,000 miles on it and gm stated it is not covered by recall.

Transfer case automatically change to neutral.
Truck with just under 34,000 miles would not disengage from four wheel drive. The vehicle was turned off with the transfer case selector in automatic four wheel drive. After it was turned off and before it was restarted, the transfer case went into full time four wheel drive, the truck had an audible noise from transfer case when it was in motion and the transfer case would not change when moving the four wheel drive selector switch. Condition caused drive-ability problems. The correction was to reprogram and set-up the transfer case module which was not covered by Chevrolet even after the servicing dealer asked them for assistance. Since there was an available fix offered by gm with a software update, software programs do not change without intervention and the condition results in drive-ability concerns, I believe these vehicles should be recalled to pro-actively prevent the issue experienced and not wait until the consumer has an issue and then have the customer pay for the repair.
14192a transfer case shifts out of gear while driving, causing loss of power, that could result in a crash.
The transfer case module is not working in this truck I changed the buttons unit but still the same problem and the power goes out in the middle of my diving. Several mechanics change some parts but still the same. I can won;t be able to get out in a situation where I need the 4x4 the dash doesn't show the correct information, only the fuel and rpm.

I had an issue with the transfer case got stuck in 4hi and at the time it had a recall so I took it to the dealer located less than 20 miles of my house I never got over 45 mph while stuck in 4hi dealer did recall which fixed the problem for about 7 months then when I was hauling a 18 ft car hauler with a small truck on it and I only had to haul it 30 miles to my house I was about a 1/4 mile from my driveway and the rear end popped really loud 1 time and then all of a sudden it started grinding and I shut the truck off and called roadside and had it towed to dealer and I received a call from the dealer they said that the spider gears had broken and it was going to cost 3000 for a new rear end do to the cross pin retaining bolt had broken inside the differential carrier assembly I decline the service because I didn't see why I had to pay if I still have warranty on it and I had another rear differential carrier assembly and had it installed which it worked fine except that the when the original rear end broke it said service 4wd and it still said that when I got the rear end fixed and I took to the dealer and they told me that it would cost 130 just to look at it and if they found anything wrong with it that that 130 would go toward repairs and as I said before it is still under warranty and is only got 47000 miles and I took it to a friend's shop that has a snap on computer and pulled codes and researched the codes and what I found was that the transfer case shift module re learned or reprogrammed and that would fix the issue which a lot of other 2014/15 silverado owners have had the same issue with the transfer case and relearning or reprogramming fixed the issue.

This vehicle is 4wd. While traveling at highway speed, the electric shift transfer case shifted into neutral without warning.
When the below messages are received, steering the vehicle is extremely difficult, the steering wheel thrashes back and forth (when at slower speeds - I. E. Attempting to park) and usually enters a "low power mode" where you can't accelerate, steer or about anything. In all cases, turning off the vehicle and restarting seems to return to normal until it happens again. 9/6/while making a turn, received a "stabilitrak off" and "power steering assist reduces drive with care" 9/8/15; received the above two messages plus "service 4wd" - 9/10/15 dealer replaced the transfer case actuator per TSB 9/14/received stabilitrak and pwr steering messages when attempting to park the truck -- dealer stated love voltage codes present, so they charged the batter and returned the truck to me. 9/16/had the steering wheel thrashing when backing into my driveway, but no messages 9/24/while on the highway (lucky traffic was slow) received the stabilitrak (twice) and pwr steering messages, so I exited to take side streets home. When making a left turn received the stabilitrak and pwr steering message, the low power mode and thrashing steering. This occurrence was in traffic and dangerous. Currently at dealer, they state they are replacing both positive and negative cables and rerouted a wire that may have been rubbing the frame. Note: there is a recall on the 2015 models for the electric power steering (eps) gm # 14743 -- same symptoms. . .
The contact owns a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. While the contact's son was driving approximately 30 mph, the vehicle lost power and vibrated. In addition, the stabilitrak warning indicator illuminated. The failure recurred numerous times. The vehicle was taken to jim browne Chevrolet (located 11300 n florida Ave, tampa, FL 33612) where the transfer case shift control module and the instrument panel cluster were reprogrammed; however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and stated that a remedy part was not available for the repair. The approximate failure mileage was 35,000.
There is a bad seal where the right front axle connects to the shaft from the transfer case. This is a common part that happens to large number of vehicles.
Purchased a used 2003 silverado, 120,000km. Encoder motor on transfer case (4x4) failed. Was towed and part replaced. Cost $900. 00. Encoder off my truck was corroded and seized. Very poorly built. This is apparently a part common to most 4x4 gm trucks. This must be a major problem for the industry and consumers.

The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that the four wheel drive transfer case failed and wore a hole in the housing of the transmission. As a result, oil leaks out of the vehicle. This also locked the front tires and the vehicle could not be moved. He has an appointment to take his vehicle to the dealer for repair. The VIN was unknown. The failure mileage was 131,000.

My 2005 silverado z71 has a loud grinding noise coming from the front differential when it is in 4 wheel drive. This car has been serviced regularly, however I have only had this vehicle in 4wheel drive 5 times since I have owned it(new). The potential repair is in excess of $1000. 00, because I have been told that it is in the front transfer case because the noise is not there in 2 wheel drive. Can you please help me. Has this happened to many silverado owners.
The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 z71. The service 4 wheel drive light illuminated when he first purchased the vehicle in August of 2008. The dealer repaired the vehicle per the warranty and replaced a switch underneath the instrument panel; the failure recurred in December 2009. A local mechanic stated that there were codes for the transfer case motor and axle; yet, it was nothing definite. The contact also stated that the abs light was illuminated. The contact did not cite any performance issues with the vehicle. The vehicle has not been repaired to-date. He called the manufacturer and was referred to NHTSA. The current mileage was approximately 100,000. The failure mileage was approximately 55,000.
The contact owns a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. While driving 70 mph, the vehicle switched from two wheel to four wheel drive automatically. As a result, the transfer case detached from the back of the transmission and the driveshaft fell out and locked up the vehicle. The four wheel drive light illuminated prior to the failure. The contact did not drive over a pothole. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence for repair. The failure mileage was 135,000.
Purchased a 2005 silverado. Noticed from the beginning that it drove odd at times. . Spoke with a mechanic and he told us that when it broke in it would drive smoother. It was just shifting hard. It seemed like it was in 4wd at times. This went on for some time. We live out a ways and put alot of miles on a vehicle. Problem continued to get worse. Took it in to the garage at 17k mechanic said he couldn't find anything. Kept ignoring the problem. Twice charging us for things not covered under warranty like alignment and rotation. We took the truck in 5 times for the same problem. Close to the end of warranty the mechanic told us if we had any more problems they would note them so the warranty would cover them. Not the case. During this time I was taking my daughters friend home and was in a really tough spot against the side of a very big hill and realized I had no 4wd. We came sliding down. Fortunately no injury. On and off again 4wd until about 1mo later no 4wd at all. The truck was taken back to the garage when the service 4wd light was on and the mechanic turned it off and told us it was unrelated to the problem we were having. This was just weeks before the 4wd went altogether. During this time we contacted the garage and gm. No help for the problem. One left it up to the other to fix the problem. In the meantime we are catching rides because a truck without 4wd is useless to us here in the wintertime. We discovered from asking others that this may be a common problem in these trucks. Seems like the same. 4wd engages itself for awhile and then stops working altogether. There are times when losing 4wd unexpectedly, where we live, put you in a life threatening situation.
At approximately 50000 miles I noticed an oil leak from the transfer case in the 2003 silverado z71. I took vehicle to the dealer in my area, who diagnosed it as a faulty top seal on the transfer case, and charged me $500 for the repair as the vehicle was no longer under warranty. Two weeks later and less than 1000 miles I noticed the same area was leaking. I took it back to the dealer, and the technician told me you have pin holes in the side of your case. It' was like a flaw in the casting. They told me they would clean it off and apply a layer of jb weld epoxy to it to seal it up. However, 3000 miles later was still was leaking. After a week of waiting and missing phone calls gm customer care and the dealer told me I needed a new transfer case and they would gladly pay half of the repair, $875 would be my half as the truck was no longer under warranty.
Service 4wd message comes on, loose all 4wd capability. This happened while driving to work in snow, thus causing a safety concern.
- the contact stated that the 1999 Chevrolet silverado 1550 extended cab antilock brake pump continued to come on and stay on. He had to disconnect the antilock brake pump about one month after he purchased the vehicle. The contact stated that there was recall o5v379000 for the service brakes, hydraulic: antilock. He stated that the recall was repaired about six months ago, the pump already failed prior to recall. The failure mileage was 61,150, and the current mileage was 135,000. The 4 wheel drive light stays illuminated and there was a leak coming from the drivers door. Update 05/04/tr.

: the contact stated the vehicle automatically placed itself into 4 wheel drive. The service dealer changed a switch and electrical wiring but the problem was not corrected. Updated 11/30/06.
I purchased this vehicle new. A few days after using the four wheel drive I received a "service 4wd" message. Returned the vehicle to the dealer. Dealer said they needed to update the flash. A few weeks later same warning. Returned it to the dealer and they performed the same action. Shortly thereafter the vehicle began to periodically self-engage into 4wd low when stopped (traffic signal or stop and go traffic). Returned the vehicle to the dealership a total of 9 times in the first 72,000 miles (extended warranty). Shortly after the warranty expired, the 4wd began malfunctioning again self engaging then not functioning at all. Returned to dealership and they said it would cost $125 for them to look at the vehicle but since this was a recurring problem they would take care of it for free. Dealer updated the flash again and said the problem was fixed. Less than 1 week later at a 2-way stop the problem returned. When I was stopped the vehicle put itself into 4wd low without me knowing. As I entered the intersection I realized the problem and pressed the accelerator to the floor to avoid getting hit by cross traffic. I managed to get the vehicle off the road; however, when I attempted to disengage the 4wd I was unable. After returning home in 4wd low I parked the truck and did some research. Turns out this was a pretty common problem and chevy still doesn't have a solution. When I started the vehicle so I could take it to the dealership it somehow put the transfercase in neutral and gave me a "service 4wd" message which prevented me from selecting any drivetrain setting. After turning the vehicle off and waiting 15 minutes I started the vehicle while holding the 2h selector. It engaged into 2h and at that point I figured I had enough. I disconnected the wire harness from the transfer case actuator. I have been driving around without 4wd ever since.
Was coming home from work, the service 4wd drive light came on, shut the vehicle off, the light would go off for awhile, then come back on. As soon as I got home I called my mechanic, he said he had worked on several 2000 silverados with this same problem lately. Also found out the neighbor had the same problem with the same vehicle (model and year the same). Turns out it is a faulty switch in the 4wd button in the dash, won't fully engage, and could scatter the transfer case. Our mechanic has the vehicle right now, he replaced the switch in the dash, and also performed the recalls that we found abs & tailgate cables.
