36 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 04/09/2010

Chevy silverado 2002. At low speeds stopping distance is unexpectedly increased due to the abs preventing a total stop during dry conditions. This occurred coming to a stop at a stop light and coming into a parking spot. The problem has occurred intermittently at least 7 times in the weeks following this first incident. The brakes also make a grinding noise at the last point of breaking. I called the dealership and described the above. They informed me there is no problem with the abs unless the light is on. They said they would have to keep the truck and drive it until it exhibited the problem. I called the gm recall hot line on may 12, 2010. Based on my VIN he said my truck was not included in the recall but that his notes showed that the wheel sensor had been inspected and cleaned when I had the brakes done in 2007. He offered no help at all. This problem is serious and I will be pulling the abs fuse to hopefully disable the system and avoid an accident. It is clear from the many complaints here and elsewhere all over the internet that this is a safety issue due to a failure that gm should be responsible for.

37 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 04/05/2010

Low speed activation of abs braking system causing extended stopping distances and/or no stopping at all. No abs system codes set. No abs light comes on. Dealer checked it out and said the front abs sensors were bad. I replaced both sensors, with the same problem existing, if not worse. The left sensor is available, but the right one was broken during removal and thrown away. I did not know I would need it. This happens every time the vehicle is driven and the brakes applied at low speed to come to a stop. There was a recall for earlier models of my vehicle and I believe my model year should be included as well as others. This is a dangerous situation. I think it should be repaired, recalled or resolved to the complete satisfaction of all involved!.

38 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 03/09/2010

Abs light keeps coming on and off, when this happens I have no brakes causing me to run out into intersections or property. I have cleaned the abs sensors 2x and the problem keeps persisting this has happened 3x now.

39 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 03/01/2010

During slow speeds, under 10 miles per hour, stopping (approaching stop signs, traffic lights, other vehicle traffic, etc. ) the abs kicks on without warning making braking very difficult. The vehicle has no abs warning light on. Much more pressure must be applied to the brake pedal in order to overcome the abs and come to a complete stop. Makes driving the truck much more dangerous and has a large potential for a vehicle accident. My opinion is that this issue should be a vehicle recall item. I live in the snow belt where much sand and salt is spread on the roads.

1999 chevy silverado abs light came on and noise along with it. I knew what it was right away because I replaced the abs module once before at 40000 miles. Chevy garage confirmed. Ridiculous and unsafe of chevy not to issue a recall.

Failure Date: 04/10/2009

Vehicle is having abs problems. There was a recall (74013) issued 8/29/05 which only covered vehicles in certain states, not virginia. Since brakes are a safety issue it seems that it should be. I called gm and they informed me it was not (71-716605105 claim #). Problem started with abs light coming on, took to repair shop and was told abs unit & ecm unit needed replacing (4/10/09). Total bill 1940. 00.

43 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 03/18/2009

Abs light came on and flashed while driving. It went off when vehicle was turned off and sat for several hours. Two days later, was driving and heard a noise from the driver's side front wheel. Took vehicle into a mechanic and discovered wheel bearing was bad and had to be replaced. The mechanic advised me to keep the part due to the fact of the number of Chevrolets he has seen with this same problem. My vehicle has approx. 44,000 miles.

44 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 01/31/2009

I am writing in regards to my anti lock baking system (abs) and my steering column. I was nearly involved in an auto accident on dry pavement when my abs system engaged and then dis-engaged at a speed of less than 10 mph. When steering to the right to avoid the accident, my steering column had a strange vibration/loud humming noise. My antilock brakes engaged while I was slowing to swerve to miss the oncoming vehicle and then my abs stopped working and my abs warning light along with my parking brake (p) warning light came on. Now, since that day (2 days ago), my steering column still makes noises when I turn to the right and my abs system continues to engage at slow speeds when stopping even on dry pavement. I have been told by a gm dealership that the two issues that I am experiencing are not on a recall list but are common problems with my vehicle. They further advised that since my vehicle is no longer under warranty, I would have to pay for these malfunctions. I was told by an independent mechanic that the above issues are safety issues and gm is aware of the problems. With the above being said, I feel that my issues with the abs system and the steering column are safety issues and gm should be addressing these issues before someone is seriously injured or killed. I need to get these issues corrected on my vehicle, however, I do not feel that I should be liable for these repairs when gm is aware of the issues and nothing has been done to remedy the problem.

Failure Date: 10/14/2008

Abs module went out on 1999 silverado that has 51000 miles. Symptoms are that the module/pump continues running even with ignition turned off. In addition, abs dash light is on. Dealer states that repair will be roughly $1000. Internet chat room for like vehicle has literally 100's of people with exact same problem. Only way to stop module/pump from running, aside from spending $1000, is to pull 60 amp fuse that enables the abs brakes.

48 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 08/01/2008

Nhtsa recall campaign number: 05086 was done on my 2001 chevy. Silverado on 11 oct. 05 at 59,952 miles. No parts were changed out. Just cleaned the abs sensors. All has worked good until August 2008. I have at least 4 occurrences a week at speeds of 1 to 6 mph. This happens each time I drive the truck since 8-01-08 to today. I've been told my chevy. Dealer that this is a one time clean/fix and cannot be done again. That I could disable it and the abs light would remain on and the abs would not activate. To have them clean or repair would be at my expense because I no longer have a warranty on my truck. I have a 2001 chevy. Impala that has had the same problem with the abs and had to have both front hubs replaced at my expense. I keep my receipts in hopes that if there is a recall I can be reimbursed. I hope that with all the other complaints that you will consider another recall so this problem can be resolved. Thank you.

49 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 05/17/2008

A few years ago I was driving my truck (1999 Chevrolet silverado z71 4x4) on a connecting road (dirt) when I hit the brakes to turn. The abs pump started running. I thought it was odd that it kept running but didn't think about it. When I returned back to my apartment, it was still running. I got up the next morning and the battery was dead. After charging the battery, I noticed the abs control unit (under the cab on the drivers side) was still running. I took it to a Chevrolet dealership which proceeded to tell me I needed a new abs unit $1100. As I cannot afford an $1100 part on a 9 year old truck. I just unplugged it. Both the brake and the abs light stay on in the cab any time the engine is running. I have attempted to find a used unit to no avail. The vehicle now has over 240000 miles on it, with exception of a little rust, the only issue I have is the anti-lock braking system.

50 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 04/18/2008

Updated 05/08/08. The anit-lock brake motor and wires from the motor caught on fire, but never blew a fuse. Updated 05/09/08.

51 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 1997 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 03/01/2008

At speeds less than 5 mph, each time I apply the brakes to stop, the abs systems engages and the vehicle does not brake to an immediate halt. Numerous times I barely avoided collisions with other vehicles and buildings. I understand that gm is aware of this or a similar problem on 1999 and later trucks and has issued a recall for a repair on some of these vehicles, but not all. After researching this problem I discovered that by removing the abs system fuse the abs does not engage and the vehicle will come to a stop upon application of the brakes. I have now removed the abs system fuse to disable the system. I now know that this is a very widespread problem that gm should stand behind or at least offer to disable the abs system (and the abs light) so the conventional brakes will function.

57 Brake Abs Warning Light problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 12/01/2005

Faulty abs braking with 2004 chevy silverado since time of purchase, low speed braking results in pulsing and unsafe stopping distance on dry pavement. I have 40,000 miles on this 2004 truck and have had 2 full brake jobs (rotors and pads, and had the rotors turned once) I mostly use the truck for commuting without much braking (highway miles). I have never had the abs light come on, yet the brakes are dangerous. The dealership I purchased from simply said gm went with rear drum brakes the next year to make it better, with no service bulletin or recall created. Do I have any solution or recourse for this costly and dangerous braking system?.
