2 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 01/16/2016

As I come to a stop, the brake pedal pulsates from abs activation increasing braking time and distance. The ground is dry while this happens. After a while the and light comes on. Was told by a dealer mechanic it was a bad abs sensor and to replace hub. I did and now, two years later, it is happening again. Now I'm being told it is a problem with elements in my area, being in a snowbelt state, getting into wheel speed sensor and blocking signal. Same exact symptoms as last time, different diagnosis. Neither time did they plug into my truck for codes. Both times, I have to open my wallet for faulty products.

10 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 12/30/2013

I realize that this vehicle is well out of the 3 year 36,000 mile manufacturer warranty. But lately with how rapidly this truck with less than 70,000 miles seems to be falling apart on me its just really been frustrating. I've only had the vehicle out of the shop less than two weeks for front wheel bearing/ abs sensor repair when my speedometer completely went out. Most of the time speedometer is reading 0 mph occasionally it will flutter between 5-10 mph. Reading online I see gm extended their speedometer warranty to 7 yrs/70k miles. Just very frustrating general motors. I can only imagine what this what this repair will cost. In the past year alone the repairs that were made to this truck with less than 70,000 miles have been. . . Front wheel bearings, sway bar(links/bushings), inner/ outer tie rods( both sides), upper/ lower a arms (both sides), new brakes/rotors( all the way around) , a front end alignment with my new tires. This is a 2 wheel drive 1500 truck not a 2500 4x4 that was used to plow snow with for years. No idea why the whole front end of my truck was so rotted out to the point everything needed replaced. Not for a truck with so few miles on it. And now this.

11 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 10/18/2013

The wheel speed sensor for the abs system is affected on multiple trucks chevy produced from 99-06. This causes the braking below 10 mph to cause pulsation and abs malfunctioning causing me to almost rear end vehicles and be unable to slow down correctly. Chevy knows of the issue yet it is not a recall for my vehicle.

12 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 12/19/2012

The contact owns a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that he attempted to stop the vehicle but once the vehicle reached 3 mph, the brake pedal abnormally traveled to the floorboard. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection where the contact was advised that the wheel speed sensor needed to be removed and cleaned. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified and stated that the vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic). The failure mileage was 75,000.

14 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 04/02/2012

Experienced braking failure and activation of anti-lock brakes when braking at low speeds. This causes longer braking times and distances and I have narrowly avoided hitting cars in front of me, running stop signs, etc. On numerous occasions. After researching this phenomenon, it is known as unintended low speed abs activation - a common problem for older model gm trucks. Additional research has revealed that it is a common problem for 2006 silverados, yet it has yet to be addressed by the manufacturer. It is commonly the result of an increased air gap between the wheel speed sensor and hub reluctor ring due to rust and debris build up on the sensor mounting surface. This is a serious hazard that needs to be addressed for silverado trucks from rust-belt states.

15 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 11/15/2011

The contact owns a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that while driving at 5 mph, he applied the brakes and the anti lock brake system engaged. The failure recurred on an intermittent basis. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that both front speed sensors needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and offered no assistance. The failure mileage was 70,000.

16 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 10/31/2011

Wheel speed sensors replaced under recall failed again failing to stop vehicle in safe distance under 10 mph. Had to replace both wheel speed sensors again. Was told brake lines also corroded. Have found that a common complaint on chevy silverado.

Speed wheel sensor failure, gm do not want to be responsibble for the safety recall, they gave me a a case number, and told me because I was the second owner warranty does not cover to fix the problem.

19 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 10/13/2010

The contact owns a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. While applying the brakes the anti-lock brake system activates. This causes the vehicle not to stop when braking. The contact took the vehicle to a dealer and the dealer stated that the issue is with the anti-lock brakes and only happens in the north east or salt belt states. The dealer stated the front wheel speed sensor needed to be replaced. The contact had the front wheel speed sensor replaced under a recall three years ago. The contact stated this is a major safety issue that could cause a crash. The failure mileage was 21,538. The consumer believed the problem was not performed correctly, the first time. Updated 01/20/jb updated 01/28/11 the consumer stated when the abs activated, he was almost at a complete stop. Updated 02/04/11.

20 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 09/20/2010

A problem exist with my 2006 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 lt. When braking at low speeds, the low speed sensor causes the abs system to engage. When the abs system engages, the vehicle does not stop where intended. The vehicle travels around 5 feet further then it would under normal braking conditions, depending on speed. This happens only at low speeds(under 10mph) and every time the vehicle attempts to come to a complete stop. I have not tried to repair the problem. I have been told by a mechanic that the low speed sensors are dirty, and need to be cleaned or replaced. I have found other people complaining of this same problem with this model of vehicle. I feel this is a safety concern, do to a possibility of delayed braking. Although I have not been personally involved in an accident, I am concerned that this problem exists. Delayed braking can cause a vehicle to be involved in rear-end collisions, or to unintentionally enter intersections.

21 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 07/10/2010

I own a 2001 Silverado 1500. I have a reocurring problem with my antilock brakes. The antilock brakes engage at low speeds while trying to stop. I had this problem in 2004 and had the hub replaced on my dime. Then it happened again in 2006. There was a recall at that time and had all the speed sensors replaced per recall. Now in 2010 I'm having the same problem re-appear. I own another 2004 gm product w/ antilocks, and many friends with other year gm vehicles with no abs issues. Is this problem only with the 2001 Silverado 1500?.

22 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 06/07/2010

There is an issue with the brake system on the 2001 Chevrolet silverado pick-up that Chevrolet has failed to address satisfactorily. The trucks were recalled due to an issue with the speed sensor that would cause the brakes to fail. In 2005 Chevrolet recalled the trucks for this issue and supposedly put rust protestant on the speed sensor to protect it from failing. In 2010 I was nearly involved in a traffic crash when my brakes failed. The dealership advised that the speed sensor went bad. I contacted Chevrolet and they failed to properly address this situation. In doing research I found that this is not an isolated incident and needs to be addressed before someone is killed or injured as a result of faulty brakes.

23 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 05/18/2010

The contact owns a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact was driving approximately between 3-4 mph coming to a complete stop. When engaging the brake pedal, the anti-brake system appeared to be in activation because of the pulsation; however the brakes would not respond causing the vehicle to roll seven feet and crashing into the proceeding vehicle. There was no injury. A police report was not filed of the incident. The contact sustained damages to the front bumper and bumper covering. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where they informed that the failure was contributed to the anti-lock brake system. The technician cleaned the front wheel speed sensor mounting surface. The contact stated the vehicle had been repaired in 2005, under NHTSA campaign id number 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic: anti-lock). The failure mileage was 106,500.

24 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 05/06/2010

The contact owns a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that the speed sensor for the abs was defective; when he applied the brakes, they would pulsate and make a clicking sound. The failure only occurred when he would attempt to completely stop. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer three times and repaired but the failure continued. The contact called the manufacturer who stated that they would contact the dealer and contact him back. The vehicle had not been repaired. The current and failure mileages were approximately 46,600.

25 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 05/01/2010

Please note mileage on this vehicle at time problems began was at 37,000. Brake pedal was traveling to the floor at speeds below 10 mph causing abs light to come on and pedal to move up and down. More allowance in stopping distance was required. May 2010 - had to install new brake pads in the front and shoes in the rear. The rotors and slides were extremely corroded for a 4 year old vehicle with 37,000 miles. October 2011 took vehicle to gm certified service center for the continuing abs issue. Corrosion was a main factor in causing the speed sensors to fail. Diagnostic scan showed left wheel sensor bad. However, once replaced, they soon discovered right wheel sensor bad also. Both sensors had to be drilled out due to corrosion. When the service department went to replace the right wheel sensor, the wheel sensor they had in stock was defective. Defective parts in stock does say something about the product. The truck was kept overnight while a new "set" of wheel sensors was ordered. Cost of diagnostic was $74. 50. Set of wheel sensors was $505. Labor, tax and "misc charges" total $313. 50 for a grand total of $893. 19. The msrp on this vehicle at time of purchase was $34,000. Our vehicles are garaged, kept clean. We are the sole owner of this truck. We do not live in chicago where we have to chip salt off our vehicles. This is the first vehicle we have ever experienced with this issue; therefore, we feel the parts are inferior and a recall should be in place. Thank you. After talking with gm customer service center, there were recalls on older vehicles 1999-2005 (certain models) with the same issue, but nothing was noted on models from 2006 or newer. The gm certified service center stated that they do replace abs wheel sensors pretty frequently.

26 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 04/15/2010

Brake line failure in a 2003 Chevrolet silverado with approximately 24,000 miles. Rear brake line corrosion led to leak and failure of rear brakes. Had the truck towed to the shop, where heavy corrosion was found on all three other brake lines. All had to be replaced with specially manufactured stainless steel lines because gm doesn't manufacture them. Previously had trouble with the abs system. Both speed sensors were faulty; had to be disassembled and replaced.

28 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 03/02/2010

Wheel speed sensor causing abs to falsely activate at 8 mph. Same problem that gm has recalled for 1999-2002 model year of silverado.

29 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 02/05/2010

The contact owns a 2001 Chevrolet silverado. Whenever the contact would apply the brakes at a low speed the abs wheel sensor would activate increasing the stopping distance of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealership where the contact had the front abs wheel sensor replaced. There were no prior warnings. The current and failure mileages were 90,000.

30 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 02/01/2010

In 2005 a recall was issued for certain models of the Chevrolet Silverado 1500. This recall was directly related to the abs speed sensors. At slow speeds the abs system would activate causing extended stopping periods. This problem occurs each and every time the brakes are applied. The consequences are an unwanted increase in stopping distance which can lead to tragedy. To correct the problem dealers were instructed to remove the wheel speed sensors, clean the mounting surface, and re-install. No parts were repaired or replaced. In this case the recall process was performed at approximately 65,000 miles and the problem re-occurred at approximately 89,000 miles. General motors was contacted and unwilling to assist in any way. This problem was not fixed properly during the recall. The solution was only a temporary fix and the problem continues to re-occur endangering the safety of all motorists.

31 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 01/19/2010

Abs activates at low speeds (less than 10 mph) for no reason causing reduced braking. The problem is caused by a buildup of corrosion, dirt and other materials between the front hub/bearing and wheel speed sensor causing loss of speed sensor signal. The problem was first repaired in 2005 under NHTSA recall campaign number 05v379000 - service brakes, hydraulic:antilock:control unit/module. The problem recurred again in January 2010 and was repaired again. There was no accident.

32 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 11/18/2009

My 2004 chevy silverado goes into abs mode at speeds under 10 mph increasing stopping distance . This occurs at every stop. The dealer cleaned rust from the front speed sensor seat ,this fixed the problem. This is the same problem that 2002 and prior models had that resulted in a recall. The dealer said this recall was for the same problem but did not cover 2003 and up.

33 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 10/23/2009

Vehicle was involved in recall for front abs wheel speed sensors, recall was allegedly performed 6/21/05. While pulling into a parking spot applied brakes while turning in, abs engaged at a low speed, approx. 2 mph, and vehicle would not stop, collided with two concrete posts that were protecting the gas meter for the building damaging the front bumper and impact strip. I do not believe that the recall was ever performed. Vehicle is a 2002 Chevrolet silverado extended cab 4x4.

34 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 10/13/2009

Unnecessary abs activation at slow speed. Abs wheel speed sensor output found to be low. Vehicle was previously serviced by dealer (1/18/06) under gm recall 05068. Service consisted of 'removing and cleaning abs wheel speed sensors'. Subsequent failure indicates that the corrective action does not adequately address the underlying defect.

35 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 09/11/2009

I first received recall notice for abs brake system on 2001 Chevrolet silverado in 2005. Immediately took vehicle to dealership on 11/1/05 and had brakes "fixed", which was simply cleaning the abs speed sensor. Mileage was 61,911. Then on 9/11/09 my wife was pulling into a parking space at our supermarket at low speed (3-4 miles per hour). Brakes failed and truck continued forward and struck the front of a parked vehicle, which in turn was pushed backward hitting a woman putting groceries in her trunk. The woman was knocked to the ground and may have been injured. Took truck to the dealership immediately and they again "fixed" brakes. This time it was at my expense of $447. Mileage was 100,670. Gm has not sufficiently addressed this recall campaign. First, the recall "fix" was actually just a band-aid to temporarily resolve the problem and not a root-cause solution. There was no service bulletin or communication to owners that this service needed to be done again every few years (at owners expense) or the brake failure at low speed issue would return again.
