Abs brakes engage at slow speeds (under 10mph) while coming to a stop. While applying the brake the abs activates and the vehicle lunges forward a few feet until the normal braking activates. This exact complaint was addressed by Chevrolet on safety recall bulletin 05058c and this repair was completed on this vehicle back in 2005. The design of the hub allows the reluctor wheel to rust which in turn doesn't allow the speed sensor to achieve a correct reading and has created the exact same issue as addressed in the original safety recall.

Complaint involves a 1999 chevy Silverado 1500 4x4 abs activates at low speeds (typical <5 mph). Experienced multiple near-misses of low speed crashes when braking; one involving a pedestrian. Failure occurs on average 1 out of 2 times when braking. Brought vehicle to gm dealer - balise Chevrolet/Oldsmobile, w. Springfield, MA - on 7/16/09. Vehicle mileage was 122,846. This is the same dealer from which vehicle was purchased original in 1999. Dealer diagnosed problem as probable corrosion at both front speed sensors. Recommended cleaning and possible replacement of both sensors at cost of $234. 25. I informed dealer that this was the same problem that occurred prior to recall 05068 (NHTSA campaign id number : 05v379000) where both front wheel speed sensors were inspected and replaced at 73,428 miles on 10/13/05. Dealer checked vehicle records and confirmed. Dealer was asked to repair at no charge based on recurring problem but declined. Contacted gm customer assistance on 7/20/09 and spoke with representative (service report 71-742297566) who reiterated that gm would not repair at no charge based on prior replacement of parts under last recall. She gave me the name of the gm manager at Chevrolet to whom written complaints should be sent.

Unwanted abs activation on 2006 Chevrolet silverado truck due to defective/corroded hub/bearing assembly-wheel speed sensor. Unwanted abs activation between 4 and 10 mph thereby increasing stopping distance. Gm issued a recall for prior model years of same vehicle with the same issue under #05068c: product safety - front wheel speed sensor corrosion - ( March 6, 2008).
The contact owns a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that if the vehicle wsa driven under 10 mph, the abs function activated and the wheel speed sensor failed by not detecting the wheels turning. As a result, the vehicle made a noise and jerked forward without warning. The contact had to apply force to the brake pedal to stop the vehicle each time the failure occurred. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who cleaned the wheel speed sensor. Years later, the failure recurred. At a low rate of speed, the brake pedal was slow to respond and required great force to stop the vehicle. The vehicle was inspected by an authorized dealer again and, an hour later, indicated that they were not able to get the wheel speed sensors removed to clean them. The wheel sensors were placed back on the vehicle. If they were damaged, the contact would need to replace the wheel speed sensors, if they were damaged. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 24,000.

Driving at slow speeds and applying the brake to stop the pedal had a chatter feel to it and then the pedal went to the floor and I could not stop. At that time I had to swerve to avoid hitting the vehicle in front of me at the stop light. This has happened a few times. This also happened pulling into a parking lot and the truck jumped the curb and bent my plow mount. I am fortunate to have not hit the vehicle or someone or something else. The most recent time was 3/24/09. I took it to the dealer this morning hoping they can figure out what the problem is. They say it might be the speed sensor, but if it something else like the abs control module that thing costs over $1000 plus labor maybe the manufacturer should look into this if this might also have a problem with this unit.

The dealer removed the wheel speed sensor and thoroughly cleaned the wheel speed sensor mounting surface on the bearing; however, the failure recurred. While pulling into a parking space at 5 mph, the vehicle failed to stop because the abs engaged. The contact crashed the vehicle into a brick wall. There were no injuries. The vehicle was driven to an auto center and the mechanic pulled the fuse from the antilock brake. The failure is intermittent. The contact was informed that the hub assembly needed to be repaired. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer and they stated that she would be responsible for the repair costs because the vehicle was previously repaired according to the recall. Stopping the vehicle, the anti-lock brakes would kick in at around 3 to 5 miles per hour and the vehicle would not stop, would roll a few more feet. Almost hit a woman and child in cross walk, had to stand up on brakes. This not stopping happened 5 or 6 times, this was the came reaction as in 2005 recall, called gm. Gm Chevrolet customer assistance center said, go and get this problem confirmed by a gm dealership, did oct. 9, '08 and they said corrosion build in same area, but because right front hub was replaced with a non gm part (after market part) they have no responsibility. This hub came with the sensor attached. In 2005 my 2002 Chevrolet silverado was issued a recall for severe corrosion area between the front hub/bearing assembly and the wheel speed sensor. They found the left side sensor was missing an o-ring, they installed under the recall. The vehicle is doing the same thing and a local dealership service department confirmed this same corrosion problem. Called Chevrolet customer assistance center oct 10, 08. Gm Chevrolet customer assistance center called me Monday oct, 20, '08 and said that once the recall was fixed, (how did they fix corrosion) the same problem is now my problem. When I dropped off the vehicle the brakes were bad, when I picked it up at the end of the day they were 10 time worse, really unsafe to drive. They did not charge me a dime, said that they would work it out with local rep. I will get the vehicle fixed, but how does this correct the problem?.
The incident happened while driving my 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. I was applying the brakes to come to a stop and once my speed went below 5 miles per hour the abs kicked in. My 2003 Chevrolet silverado has a braking issue where the brakes fail to work. The general motors corp had a recall on this issue identifying model years 1999-2002. I called the general motors corp for help with the issue. I was told by their representative, I needed to have the vehicle evaluated by a Chevrolet dealer, if the problem were found, they would repair it at no cost to me. I brought the vehicle to my local dealer, they found and documented the issue on a service report (I have a copy). When I called general motors back, I was told that they were not going to fix the problem, it was my problem to fix. I explained numerous times that this is not a wear item, they had a recall previously, their dealer documented my vehicle as having the problem. Still, to no avail, I was told it is my problem and they won't cover it because it wasn't identified under the recall. Therefore, why was I told to bring it to the dealer for no reason and a cost to me of $42, and more importantly why are they not concerned that my vehicle has an issue where the brakes fail to work. General motors service bulletin # 05068b, NHTSA campaign number: 05v379000. The evaluation was performed by keigan Chevrolet in franklin MA, service report invoice # 82978a. The vehicle was manufactured in 11/02 although it is called a 2003 model. I only seek to have the braking issue repaired. As noted by the service report, the front wheel hubs need to be replaced. I also have a second issue following the same chain of events, the intermediate steering column rattles. There was also a service bulletin for this issue, also found to be a problem at the dealer, also documented on the service report, told same thing, my problem. I would like them to replace the intermediate steering column at their cost.

Pulling into a parking spot at a slow rate of speed, the antilock brakes kicked in and I could not stop. I ended-up hitting the car in front of me causing 1,100 in damage to her car. This issue was supposed to be fixed in a recall in oct 2005. The fix was a bandaid to the real problem. The abs system is in these trucks are faulty. I was told the best thing to do is take the fuse out of the truck for the abs.
I own a 2000 chevy silverado pickup, when I slow down to come to a stop brake pedal goes to the floor and vibrates, drastically increasing my stopping distance. I received a recall notice in 2006 for the speed sensors on my 2000 silverado. The dealer lubricated the speed sensor. In November 2007 the abs brake activation started again. I took it to the dealer and the day Chevrolet service department said they couldn't get it to occur. It continued to get worse and began to occur frequently when stopping at a red light or parking. In April 2008 I almost wrecked into the car in front of me when parking. I took it in and they replaced the speed sensor. They said this was not covered under the recall. The bill was $442. 23. I could not have my truck unless I paid for it. I escalated it in gm and got a call this morning that said the final ruling from gm is that they will not pay for the speed sensor replacement. They said they already satisfied the recall in April 2006 when they lubricated the sensor. There is no further escalation available.
The speed sensors failed on my 2003 Chevrolet silverado, nearly causing a crash because the abs system came on unexpectedly. The recall only extends to the 2002 model year, and gm will not fix my vehicle, even though this caused a dangerous situation for me and my family. Gm does not stand behind their products or care about the safety of their customers. Over 200 actual crashes have been reported. Do not buy a gm vehicle unless you enjoy car crashes and poor customer service. Now I am paying $500 on a leased truck to fix something that was defective.

I have a 1999 chevy silverado. Last week I went to the chevy dealership and had them fix the wheel speed sensor under the recall for the abs activation. I told them that I pulled the fuse for the abs motor a while back and I didn't have a replacement. To my surprise, he said that fixing the wheel speed sensor would not fix the abs problem I was having. He said this without any details as to why I pulled the fuse. He said that the problem was the abs motor. He said that the circuit packs within the motor are shorted and the motor would have to be replaced. It seemed like he has seen this problem many times before. Even seemed annoyed when I asked further about it. I got the feeling that he has to answer questions about this all the time. Everyone I know with this same vehicle is having the same problem. The mechanic I use to go to told me that he sees this problem all the time on chevy's and gms from around 1999. He owns a 2000 gm sierra and is having the same problem. Gm put out a recall for the abs, but are not fixing the problem completely. Chevy dealership told me it would cost about $800. 00 to replace the motor. I feel like gm took the cheap way out by fixing the wheel speed censor. Is everyone else with this problem being fooled thinking that their abs problem is going to be fixed with this recall that is currently out? why is gm concerned about one safety issue (the cheap one) and not another (the expensive one)?.

On the fourth trip to the dealer, the contact was informed that no failures could be found. She is unsure if the dealer will replace or clean the sensor, but she requested that it be replaced. In addition, the intermediate steering shaft was replaced with a re-manufactured part in July of 2005 at 18,031 miles. In November of 2006, at 29,650 miles, the steering shaft was lubed. In April of 2008, at 43,194 miles, the steering shaft was replaced a second time. Currently, at 56,000 miles, the vehicle is still experiencing issues. The dealer must check and replace the shaft failures every 25,000 miles. Lastly, the rear brake rotors were resurfaced four times and all of the window regulators have to be replaced. The dealer stated that the recall repair had previously been performed on the vehicle in may of 2004. When braking at low speeds the abs would come on and the vehicle would not stop on solid dry pavement. Upon my investigation what I found was the front hub bearing seal rusted out. This caused road salts/water to enter the hub assy. . This then created a rust that gathered on the magnetic abs speed sensor . The gm campaign under NHTSA campaign number: 05v379000 says this is due to an exterior rust issue. This is not what I found ! when the gm procedure to repair this is done , it will fix the problem for a short time because the rusted grease is removed from the sensor tip . I replaced both front hub assy and this is now not a defect . My complaint is that many have reported that , this is a one time fix, so it is my belief gm sold this quick fix to NHTSA to cheap out on the real fix , which is to replace the front hub assy and use seals with a rust resistant metal . It is a lot cheaper to remove the rust off the sensor tip , than to fix the real cause which is a rusted damaged hub assy due to poor metal quality of the grease/hub bearing seal. I have been working on transportation vehicles since 1977 including vehicles with abs braking systems .

The vehicle has not been repaired. The contact called the manufacturer and was informed to take the vehicle back to the dealer for inspection. They further stated that no compensation would be made regarding the speed control sensor because it was previously replaced. The failure mileage was 50,000 and current mileage was 84,000.
