2 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 02/08/2021

Transmission locked up and failed. Acted like it bound up. This happened during a normal shift sequence, acted tight then engine just kept over revving. Happened about 3-4 months ago. Dealer fixed for free. Said it was common. This happened right at 60k miles. Said if it happens again they will not warranty it as there is no fix for this problem. Suggested I buy another new truck. Next problem is my right front caliper has failed twice and needed complete replacement. It is now failing for the third time. This is seriously unsafe and crazy. I have only about 73k miles on this truck. Third thing is my chrome trim on my door handles has repeatedly failed. I was told by my dealer this is normal and it is not fixable unless I pay them. It is not normal wear and tear. The truck is babied and kept in perfect condition.

3 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 09/22/2020

While parking the truck I loss all brake pressure. The pedal went to the floor and I had to stand on the brakes to get the truck stopped. Once stopped and parked I repeatedly pumped the pedal with no changes. I had the truck towed to a mechanic who found no issues with the fluid or system in general. He drove the vehicle with no issues for 10 minutes. He checked the pads and calipers for any issues with none being found. After putting the wheels back on the truck it exhibited a recurrence of loss of brake pressure.

4 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 07/07/2020

When I step on the brakes it gets really hard and will not stop. It happened to me in a parking lot. I was pulling into a parking spot and did not stop. Then when I was driving down the road I rear-ended someone and I was not driving very fast. My concern is that if a child or car runs out in front of me I wil not be able to stop. This has happened several times now. I have paid mechanics to replace my brake pads, calipers, disc's because I do not want to hurt myself or someone else.

6 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 02/27/2019

Yet another failure of inadequately specced brake lines. I have now had to replace two brake lines (from the bpmv to the front-right caliper and bpmv to the rear-left drum) due to blow-outs originating from heavy corrosion - both of which occurred in heavy-traffic situations. On every other vehicle I have owned, brake lines were an item that could more-or-less be presumed a lifetime part; they rarely needed to be replaced unless damaged. However, on my truck (and hundreds of others just on the NHTSA's complaints page for the 06 silverado alone), the hard brake lines are about as far from a long-lasting, high-quality part as you can get. There is an endless amount of documentation scattered across the internet on this matter, yet the NHTSA seems averse to holding gm responsible for the safety of their product. It may well be too late at this point for the NHTSA to do anything about it, but why didn't they do anything sooner? the oldest recorded complaint on the NHTSA website is from 5-22-2012 (id# 10459283), there are hundreds on the exact same matter, and yet the NHTSA has publicly opened 0 investigations on the topic. To the NHTSA, please hold gm accountable for speccing lines that are not adequate for a service environment, and quit making consumers responsible for gm's choices. Thank you.

7 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 11/28/2018

Brake pedal in the truck will occasionally go to the floor when the truck is in reverse. The problem seems to happen more when backing a boat trailer down a ramp at a boat launch where the truck is at an angle. Have lost brakes multiple times when doing that. Fluid is full in the reservoir and the mechanical portion (brake pads, rotors, calipers) checked out as fine.

8 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 07/10/2018

There is a major safety design flaw in the 1999-2002 brake system. The front tires through the salt and grime from the roads onto the brake lines where Chevrolet has located them in the design. This causes the brake lines to corrode and burst during driving. Mine have now burst for the second time in the last 5 years. The first time in 2013 I was driving at about 35-40 mph when I went to make a rh turn and the brakes went to the floor. This time I had went to a local gas station and was on the way home when I stopped to talk to a neighbor and once again the brake pedal went to the floor. I drive the truck very little so I have only put just over 17,000 miles on the new set of brake lines that I had installed by a Chevrolet dealer in 2013. I live in southern indiana, just north of louisville, ky so our winters are not that harsh, so the amount of salt from roads is pretty limited. I have talked with other Chevrolet silverado, yukon and suburban owners and they all share having the same issues with their brake lines. I have went to youtube to see how to make the repairs myself and have seen countless videos on individuals repairing their brakes because of the corrosion and the brake lines bursting. Come on nhtsb what are you waiting on before you issue a recall, someone to die or be permanently disabled! do the right thing and issue a recall to fix the brakes with stainless steel lines, rotors, calipers and brake pads that will not rust after a few years!.

9 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 07/20/2017

At 4200 miles the front right disc brake was damaged beyond repair. The mechanic stated that the front left showed normal wear and that it still have more than 50% left on the pad. The right front caliper was not retracting and caused the brake to run compressed for a long time hence causing unrepairable damage to the rotor. The dealer service did not inform me of the defective caliper, only that they needed to replace the rotor and brakes, never mentioned that the left side was normal. Is there a recall for brake calipers on this vehicle??.

10 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 04/29/2017

Front brakes on left side stick and wear unevenly and rapidly. I have had front brakes replaced twice with 80% pad life on right side by midas. Midas stated that there is a service advisory to replace the left side piston/caliper and a new hose which is larger allowing the brakes to release properly.

11 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 10/30/2016

2004 Chevrolet silverado experienced complete brake failure. Driving down a short hill, brake pedal pushed completely to floor with no brake response or stopping availibility. Driving @ approximately 20 mph, applying the emergency brake had little effect and had to turn into a dirt hill to stop the truck. Upon further inspection, 4 brake lines direclty underneath the cab on the drivers side were completely corroded with 2 lines failing simultaneously releasing brake fluid onto the ground. The 2 lines from the proportioning valve in the engine compartment to the abs and the 2 lines from the abs to the 2 front wheels run parallel under the cab and are severely corroded in 2 places only. The 4 lines were severely rusted at the point of the plastic clips that secure the lines to the frame of the truck. The plastic clips that hold the brake lines hold moisture and salt and cause all the brake lines to corrode at those points. It's important to note that there is no rust in the lines to the rear of the truck or at both rear brake calipers. This is not normal wear or lack of maintenance. I clean the underside of my vehicle every winter. The lines are rusting as a result of the clips retaining salt and corrosives and causing year round contact to the brake lines. Is anyone reading or investigating here? there are literally hundereds of complaints here regarding this exact issue. I have seen multiple post thast list the corrosion in the exact same spot as my truck. These lines rust not from normal wear but because of a defective clip design. Repair estimate from Chevrolet dealer is $1250 to replace all lines. When will gm consider this a defect or write a service bulletin?.

12 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 10/25/2016

Tl the contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. While driving 85 mph, there was an uncontrollable vibration coming from underneath the vehicle near the transmission. On several occasions, while driving various speeds, the brake pedal was depressed and failed to slow down or stop the vehicle. The contact stated that the vehicle occasionally also pulled to the left or the right when the brake pedal was depressed. Furthermore, while driving, the vehicle stalled and shut off on four separate occasions. The contact was able to restart the vehicle after several attempts. The vehicle was taken to wommack Chevrolet (currently known as north park Chevrolet castroville, located at 1955 us-90, castroville, TX 78009, (830) 931-9200) where it was diagnosed that the brake calipers, brake pads, brake lines, and torque converter needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. The contact was advised to turn off the abs and traction control and the vehicle would perform better; however, the contact refused. The manufacturer was notified of the failures. The contact was provided case number: 84425679432. The approximate failure mileage was 6,967.

13 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 10/24/2016

I was going down my driveway, pulling a 16 ft stock trailer and the brake line to the rear passenger side wheel ruptured. I was able to stop, but could not have if I'd been at highway speed. The electric brakes on the trailer helped. Took to chevy service and all brake lines were corroded and eaten through. Pistons corroded and stuck on both front calipers. All lines were replaced along with the calipers. Total cost was $1647. 94 parts were $484, the rest was labor. Truck had to be towed to dealer. They wanted to replace rear pads and drums because they were exposed to brake fluid, but we can't afford that right now.

14 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 11/07/2014

I left my home and drove approximately 10 miles before pulling into a parking lot. I was away from the vehicle for about 45 minutes. Upon starting the vehicle I depressed the brake pedal and engaged the transmission. At this point the pedal seemed to travel further than usual. I left the parking lot and drove about 200' before having to stop; this time the pedal went to the floorboard but slowed the vehice somewhat. (at this point the dash showed a check brake system). By driving under 30 mph I was able to get the vehicle to the Chevrolet dealership. The lines were rusted as were the calipers. Parts and labor=$1700 the truck is 12 years old with only 26,910 miles on it.

15 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 10/06/2014

I while driving vehicle, it lost brake pressure causing the brake pedal to push to the floor, upon examination it was discover the brake lines that run from the master cyclinder to abs module were rusted out and the brake lines from the abs module to the brake calipers where rusted out as well. The brake lines had to relpaced.

16 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 09/04/2014

All six break lines rotted away, lost 2 lines while driving home at night, no warning, thank god I was close to home, 2 front calipers rotted so bad, I could not bleed the lines. . . All this after the heads leaked antifreeze into the oil at 40,000 miles. I was told chevy new about the defective heads, but did nothing about it. Instrument cluster bulbs blew, gas guage cluster failed, passenger door will not unlock when shifted back into park. Serious frame rust showing. . . . . And the hits just keep on coming!!!!!!.

17 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 08/21/2014

8/21/14- left work at 5pm, approaching an intersection to make a right turn, traveling approximately 20 mph, applied brakes and pedal went to the floor. Safely turned, pulled off the road and stopped vehicle. Found brake fluid pooling on the road under bed of pickup. Found a badly rusted and blown out rear brake line. Had truck towed home, replaced all of the brake lines with aftermarket stainless steel pre bent lines as every single one of them was rusted. I also had to replace both front calipers as they too were so rusted that the bleeder screws broke off as I tried to open them. Total cost for me doing all of the repairs was over $500. 00 how can gm consider this problem "normal routine maintenance" ? belt's ,hoses, lights, brake pads, they are normal routine maintenance items, not brake lines.

18 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 08/20/2014

While traveling through town approached an intersection when brakes were applied pedal went to the floor tried to pump them as fast as possible to not get into a collision with car sitting at the red light. Did an avoidance manuver into right turn lane was unable to stop truck and narrowly missed oncoming traffic turning left as I approached the corner, I shifted transmission into low gear and was able to apply parking brake to stop truck. Took to mechanic and found brake line ruptured below drivers seat had to replace all brake lines due to corrosion . Was informed by mechanics repairing the ruptured line could break surronding lines as they were all corroded as well. So they replaced all brakelines and all piston calipers as well because ferrul nuts were rusted into calipers. $1600 dollar repair. Lines and calipers (4).

19 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 11/01/2013

On multiple occurrences, driving at varying speeds, without traction control disengaged, the parking brake and traction controls warning lights and sounds activated for no apparent reason. The lcd dic indicated stabilitrak off and service brake system messages. Tried engaging and disengaging both the parking brake and traction control with no change. When the parking brake was engaged however, the sounder began sounding again and when disengaged it would shut off. Service brakes, rotors and calipers were replaced approximately 4000-4500 miles ago. First occurrence was about 1000 miles ago. Has occurred 3 times total. Possible bad abs sensor?.

20 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 10/21/2013

The contact owns a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that while driving 5 mph, he attempted to engage the brakes but the brake pedal sunk abnormally into the floorboard. The contact then attempted to engage the emergency brake but it also failed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technician diagnosed that the brake lines were completely corroded. As a result, the brake lines and the calipers would need replacing. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was repaired. The failure and current mileage was 47,305. Updated 12/20/cn.

21 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 10/10/2013

This is the 3rd time I lost brakes,in 2005,w 54000 miles, I lost all brakes and had to replace all rusted calipers rotors and rear rusted hand brake cables and drums. In8/10/10 w/74000 miles and had rusted brake line repaired. Now on 10/ 10/13 lost all brakes, due to another rusted brake. I had all rusted brake lines tested and replaced, by a auto repair shop. These repairs cost me 2300. 00 dollars. Ps/this vehicle has only 88000 miles,6000 miles a year and always, always has a undercarriage wash in salt road conditions. The only major problem with this truck is the bad brake rust problems. No other vehical I owned has had rust as this truck. I still own a 1972 vw that has all original brake lines w/ no rust.

22 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 04/07/2013

Went to sears to have their technicians replace rear brake calipers and they refused because they said my brake lines were so rusted that they were about to break if they tried to replace the calipers. They advised me to go to the dealership milton ruben here in augusta georgia or someone who deals with replacing steel brake lines. After further investigation of the steel brake lines they are completely rusted throughout the truck from front to back. I will be taking a picture tomorrow for my records. This is a real safety concern and I will be taking it to a service shop to be replaced as soon as possible. I am glad that sears pointed this out, it probably saved some lives.

23 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 02/05/2013

Replaced brakes and calipers bleed system then went to drive and when stopping no pedal at al. Rear brakes work fronts dont. Rebled brakes and with both front lines off there is no fluid coming out the lines and when testing the rear I get fluid coming out. My truck is disabled till I can fix this.

24 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 12/07/2012

Took truck in for state inspection, truck failed inspection due to rusted brake lines, power steering pump leaking , dealer said it would be $1228. 43 to $1420. 99 to just fixed the brake lines all lines needed replaced and calipers screws. Power steering pump cost 535. 00 to replace. Poor quality ,high cost to fix and lack of safety on gm part for not covering rubber coating or using stainless steel lines to protect our family very discouraged with service tech said these are the prices. What happened to our safety. Brake lines and gas lines should not be made of steel that can corrode and rust out and break. Power steering pump with these few miles should not have gone out. My 1988 chevy truck never had these problems. There needs to be a recall.

25 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 10/10/2012

First incident: upon leaving work, I merged onto the highway, travelled around the circle, stopped, crossed onto another highway, stopped again, accelerated normally, reached approximately 40 mph and had to hit the brakes hard to stop because of traffic in front of me stopping short. The next time I depressed the brake pedal, it travelled nearly to the floor. The line from the abs unit to the rear brakes had cracked. I was able to get the vehicle to my garage where I removed(and saved) and replaced the line. Second incident: Tuesday, February 19th. On my way to work, normal driving and braking, approaching a traffic light, light changed to yellow, I was going approximately 50 mph, depressed brake pedal, pedal continued to travel and I was able to stop in the middle of the intersection after the light had turned red. No accident or injury. I will most likely receive a ticket as the light has a camera that photographs anyone running the light and sends them a ticket in the mail. This time, a line going to the passenger side front caliper broke. I was able to get the vehicle back to my garage where I cut out and began the difficult task of replacing this line. I also noticed the line going to the driver side front caliper was equally rusted, but had not broken yet. It is now Thursday, February 21st. I have missed 3 days of work and now I will have to have my truck towed to the dealership I work at where I will most likely have to remove the body of the truck from the frame to properly install new brake lines to the front calipers. I have saved the old brake lines as evidence. They look more like rotten twigs than they look like steel brake lines. It's disgraceful that a vehicle only 9 years old would need all new brake lines when I have had several old vehicles from the 70's and 80's which had original brake lines that did not break. Only surface rust appeared on them.

26 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 09/29/2012

Thankfully after removing my box of my truck to repair rust, I noticed severe corrosion/rust on the brake line that feeds the rear calipers (enough corrosion where it was bowing out and slightly leaking). I went out and purchased corrosion proof flex line and replaced the entire line. Upon further inspection the entire line is basically corroded away. I started looking at the other lines and they all have this same problem I really can't afford to replace them all nor do I have the time, reading online I'm not the only one. This should be investigated, this is putting many lives at risk! please investigate this. Gm needs to be held for this problem.

27 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 06/26/2012

The brake lines of the chevy Silverado 1500 have all rusted out. The undercarriage and brake lines have corroded causing brake failure. Some of the lines were replaced within a few years. Brake calipers affected as well.

28 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 04/06/2012

The contact owns a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. While driving approximately 25 mph, the rear brake lines fractured. The contact discovered extensive rust on all six brake lines, calipers, and the undercarriage. An independent mechanic repaired all six brake lines and replaced the calipers. The manufacturer was notified. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000.

29 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 02/14/2012

When I had the oil changed I had the garage check the brake lines since I had heard of many failures. They determined and showed me that the lines were corroded and the connections to the calipers were also so corroded that they broke when they tried to remove them. I had everything replaced to prevent a failure of the system.

30 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 01/11/2012

On January 11 2012 I was driving my Chevrolet Silverado 1500 1999 home from work. It was a clear night with clear road conditions. I went to hit the brakes, and as was the case when the brake lines blew in my Chevrolet silverado 2500 2000 I felt little to no pressure before the pedal slammed to the floor. I had to use the emergency brake to stop the vehicle and had to pay $300 for new lines. The rear axle brake lines on both sides blew, as well as the driver's side front brake line going to the brake caliper from the brake booster. I would like to have the brake lines repaired by a dealer at no cost to me, as I had them done at an independent shop with aftermarket parts. I have faith in gm, and continue to buy nothing but gm products, and would like my problem repaired with the gm customer service, reliability and durability that I have seen with gm products in my history of ownership.

31 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 11/09/2011

I've had to replace all my brake components such as, rotors, calipers, brake lines, backing plates, also the rear leaf spring shackles had to be replaced and welded in all due to metal corrosion or rust. Now my latest problem is the rear shock mounts have broken due to rust so now my shocks are just dangling around not doing anything to prevent me from getting into an accident. But it doesn't stop there, the rear crossmember that goes from one end of the frame to the other is also rotted through so now I can't even repair the shock mounts because they mount to this crossmember which is now a piece of rotted metal! I can't believe how fast this truck has rotted through, I have a 1984 pontiac grand prix and I have never had to change or replace any of these parts because of rust. I have read that gm had used cheaper metal from china on their model trucks from 1999-2004 and didn't stop using them until all of the complaints started to surface. Why doesn"t gm take responsibility for the use of shoddy materials and compensate all the hard working people who have purchased their trucks for these years!!!!!!.

32 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 09/27/2011

All the brake lines are rusted, from the prop valve to each rubber line on all four calipers. It appears that gm used steel lines instead of a material that doesn,t rust(ss). Is there a recall for this problem as it is a saftey concern? I was lucky no one or any property was damaged.

33 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 09/15/2011

Front brake line rusted thru. Truck had to towed to repair shop. 8 feet of brake line was repaired. While the mechanic was under the truck he said this was only the start, all the brake lines have very heavy rust. Upon inspection by me, I saw exactly what the mechanic was stating. I was doing a simple u turn on my street when the brakes let out. There was no braking at all, the pedal was to the floor. It was very lucky I was doing less than 5 mph. The repair at the shop cost me $980. 00. Four calipers had to be replaced due to heavy rusting. This truck is a maintained vehicle. Yes I do live in long island n. Y. Where there is snow removal but I have never had this type of rust on any of my vehicles. I keep many of my vehicles for 15 years do to the low mileage I put on a vehicle. I have never had this much rust on their brake lines nor have I ever had a brake rust thru. In addition I was under the impression that if the front brakes were lost you would have the rear brakes working to stop the vehicle. Not so on this vehicle. This vehicle has lots of rust on all its brake lines. Drive safety is an issue that certainly should be addressed. The truck is unsafe and a correction recall should be instituted. I understand NHTSA is looking into this issue as thousands of these vehicles have this problem. This problem is a huge safety concern as many people do keep their vehicles for many years, however I do read that vehicles much younger than mine also have this problem. Gm has a problem, they know about it and they stand buy doing nothing. You folks (NHTSA ) need to step in and correct this deadly issue. As a side note,I do not complain about anything, but this safety issue has really gotten to me. I if I am involved in an accident or if my wife and family are in this truck the ramifications could be enormous. [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

34 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 06/02/2011

I got off work, pulled up to get onto main road brakes felt spongy, did stop, got onto main road traveled 1/2 mile about 35 mph, slowed truck by letting off gas to make right turn, tried to use brakes to slow more, brakes went to the floor. I managed to get slow enough to make turn safely. I pretty much traveled 5-10 mph another 50yds to get into lowes parking lot. I tried to brake again, no brakes. I put truck into neutral and coasted to stop. I got out of the truck smelled brake fluid. Brake fluid was everywhere around my driver rear wheel. I called a tow truck to get my truck home thinking my caliper or hose failed. After taking off my wheel, I found that the steel brake line was ruptured. Called a mechanic to see if he could take a look at it, he said he could maybe late Friday, he just did a 2004 silverado with the same problem. I called a tow truck again to get truck to his garage. He calls me late Friday evening and said all the brakes lines have to be replaced because of heavy corrosion and maybe the calipers depending if they fail. He quoted me a price at $900. My CO-worker had his brake lines replaced not to long ago and his is a newer model.
