36 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 08/20/2014

I was driving down the road at 45 mph, when a deer stepped out only 40 yards ahead of me, I applied my brakes and heard a loud pop and my brake pedal went to the floor and had absolutely no brakes. Luckily the deer started to sprint because I missed the deer by only a couple feet. After looking under the hood I found out the master cylinder blew a o-ring. I did some research and it looks like chevy knew about this problem.

37 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 08/07/2014

I was taking my daughter to the store when I tried to hit my brakes the pedal went straight to the fire wall. We were able to stop using the emergency brake. I took it to a garage and was told all of my lines were corroded through and that the master cylinder was bad to. I left it there to be repaired with the final cost of approx. 675. 00$ . Is gm offering any assistance for this premature brake line failure?? or do thirteen people have to die first??.

38 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 06/04/2014

I own a 2000 Chevrolet silverado z71 4x4 extended cab short bed with 5. 3l and auto transmission slt package with 165000 highway miles. I travel around 62 miles a day. On June 4th, 2014, I was traveling the freeway at 70mph and I began slowing to exit when the brake pedal dropped to the floor. No matter how much I pumped or held down the pedal it would not even slow. I immediately began shifting the transmission manually to lower my speed which did help and then applied the emergency brake which seem to work for a second then seized as I was pressing the pedal. It was just stuck and wouldn't go down any further. Unfortunately it was rush hour and the exit was backed up from the light and I was running out room quickly. Having no shoulder on the exit, I had to leave the roadway and veer off into a gas station lawn which I managed to get the truck to slide around and stop before heading into traffic. After checking the master cylinder and seeing it almost empty I towed the truck home. To my surprise when looking under the truck, I find a leaking brake line. Then I start to notice all of the brake lines are rusted completely through from the front calipers to the rear. This truck is only 14 years old which tells me the materials used to manufacture these brake lines were not adequate. The speed at which they have rusted is ridiculous for a 14 year old vehicle. After doing some research I watched multiple news channels have reported on this issue but gm refuses to admit their fault. The entire under carriage and frame of these vehicles are rusting out way to quick when compared to all vehicles manufactured the same year and they all are rusting in exactly the same areas. This condition is a danger to not just the vehicle owners but to everyone sharing the road.

39 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 02/22/2014

The contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that while driving 4 mph, the vehicle made a loud popping sound as the clutch pedal sank into the floorboard. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technician diagnosed that the master cylinder housing failed. As a result, the housing and clutch assembly needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 98,000. Updated 04/22/lj.

40 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 12/10/2013

1 of 5 brake lines (master cylinder to abs module) rusted completely through causing me to lose all braking ability as I was to turn left across traffic. Luckily there were no other cars coming in the opposite direction or I would have been hit. The cost of the repairs was $1346. 95 which included the replacement of 4 additional lines that were rusted and replacement worthy. For gm to say that 1 line wouldn't cause a complete loss of braking power is wrong. I had a complete loss of braking power with only 1 line completely rusted through. Vehicle spent 2000-2002 in the northeast where originally purchased, 2003 in hawaii, 2004-2006 in southeast georgia, 2006-2013 in connecticut and 2013 to present in hampton roads area virginia.

41 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 05/27/2013

Backing up truck, moved it forward and the brakes went, couldn't stop the truck. I was moving forward after having it on reverse, so the speed was slow (5mph). Noticed there was a puddle on the ground of brake fluid, and to further investigate, there was a lot of rust and corrosion that came from underneath. I was on vacation when this happened, called aaa for a tow on the date listed. Replaced brake lines, master cylinder, and noticed while replacing the brake lines, there's more corrosion coming from underneath.

42 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 05/02/2013

Rear brake line (not brake hose) ruptured due to corrosion. I was still in my driveway when the line ruptured but, was five minutes from getting on the interstate. I was pulling a trailer when the rupture occurred. When I applied the brake the pedal went to the floor with no warning. My driveway is on a steep hill but, I was able to stop the vehicle with the parking brake before entering the street. Very dangerous. I use this vehicle every day. This could have resulted in a serious accident since I was pulling a trailer and headed for the interstate, as stated earlier. I thought these vehicles with the split master cylinder still provided some braking in situations such as this. Apparently not.

43 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 04/23/2013

I was driving along coasting at a lower than normal speed, (fortunately) because I saw the traffic light way ahead of me turn red. . . . Not towing anything. . . No load in the bed of the truck. When I applied the brakes,in a normal/not panicked manner, the pedal went straight to the floor. There never were any warnings/lights, even after the failure. Luckily I had enough time, and piece of mind, to manipulate the emergency brake, and come screeching to a stop (by just the rear brakes) with only a couple feet to spare. If I hadn't, (or if the e-brake hadn't worked) I would have plowed into several small cars that were stopped at the light. , with my big crew cab truck. Certainly severely injuring many people! I discovered the rear brake line had failed. . . Totally. . . It is a pile of rust. . . Resulting in complete brake failure! I can send you a photo. . . . I would like to send you a photo! all of the lines are going to have to be replaced in order to safely operate this vehicle again. . . I have also found (with a quick internet search) countless other identical instances of this occurring in similar model year gm trucks. . Many, years prior to it happening to me! mine only has 50k miles on it, and is garage kept. . . And always kept spotless. I've always been under the assumption that if a brake line failed, the master cylinder was supposed to shift over to shunt/prevent the leaking line from bleeding pressure. . . So the rest of the brakes would work?? (not like in the movies) the gov't mandates 5 mph bumpers and everything else under the sun, but not this type of redundant brake feature? what is going on here? they do a recall because the tailgate cables rust, and might damage the tailgate, but don't for rusting brake lines that could kill people!!?? this is unacceptable!!!! I'm very anxious to hear a reply to this. .

44 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 12/28/2012

The brake line on my chevy silverado pick up ruptured do to rust. The line is located just under the drivers door. It runs from the master cylinder to the abs block.

45 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 12/06/2012

Brake line from master cylinder to abs unit blewout almost causing me to rear end vehicle in front of me.

46 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 10/06/2012

While exiting interstate 89 in swanton vermont, I applied the brakes and the pedal went completely to the floor with nearly no braking occurring. There were no warning lights or previous problems. Vehicle was towed to a repair facility. An inspection revealed the brake line burst very close to the master cylinder. The inspection also revealed the entire brake-lines were rusted and corroded beyond any normal wear. The repairman stated that he has seen this on a number of silverado's and that their is obvious problems with the quality of the lines. This vehicle is garage kept and shows no body wear or engine wear.

47 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 09/28/2012

Backing up to launch boat on ramp and brake pedal went to the floor. Drove truck 2 blocks to house used emergency brake to stop. Saw brake fluid on the road. Brake lines are severely corroded and one has failed. Master cylinder has lost all fluid.

48 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 09/22/2012

Tl-the contact owns a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. While driving approximately 30 mph, the brake warning indicator illuminated until the engine was turned off. The vehicle failed to decelerate when pressure was applied to the brakes until after several attempts. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the brake master cylinder and booster were replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the defect. The approximate failure mileage was 21,532. Kmj.

49 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 09/03/2012

Rear steel brakeline failure caused by rust-through, causing complete loss of brakefluid. Leak was at bend over frame bracket and fitting for flexible rubber hose for rear axle brake . Did under vehicle inspection of brakelines on vehicle, all brakelines front and rear need replacement because of severe rust and corrosion. Lines between master cylinder and abs brake controller and lines to all service brakes need replacement. Loss of rear brakes caused rear brakes to fail. Remaining front brakes system would have been useless if loss was at high speed.

50 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 07/24/2012

Severe corrosion lead to a brake line failure and subsequent inability to stop. Brake lines are corroded way before they should have, and much more than the fuel and steering lines. The line leading from the master cylinder to the abs unit was the one that failed, but all are showing severe corrosion. ## VIN passed ## Chevrolet 1500hd 2003 ##.

51 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 03/12/2012

On March 12 2012 I was traveling down a road going to work when a vehicle pulled out in front of me. Driver did not see me therefore kept on going so I immediately hit the brakes and swerved to the left avoiding a crash. . At that time when I hit my brakes the pedal went straight to the floor. The abs was activated but it took considerably longer to stop the truck since I had very little braking effort. . . I took it to a shop to have it fixed and it was determined that one of the 4 lines that were clustered together on the frame between the master cylinder and the abs controller had burst. All 4 of the lines were very rusty. In addition, today March 16 2012 I went by the shop to see what they had done on the repair. . The mechanic informed me that he had repaired the line and when he was bleeding the brakes, another one of the lines had burst.

52 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 02/07/2012

Noticed my brake lines coming out of the brake master cylinder are rusting ! these lines are not near the road [ chemicals/ road salts ] but are in the engine compartment. My truck is located and driven in southern California in a warm location [ not in the mountains and winter cold]. I will have to check the rest of the lines and do something before they rust thru and cause an accident. This is a safety issue.

53 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 01/28/2012

I was leaving giant eagle grocery store. I pulled out of my parking spot and pulled up to the crosswalk. There was a mother with her two small children crossing. I put on my brakes to stop to let them cross and the pedal went to the floor. Thankfully I put on the parking brake and stopped two feet from running them over, I pulled to the side and looked under my truck and saw one of the brake lines from the master cylinder to the abs module was blown out. All of the brake lines on my truck are severely corroded. This is the second brake line failure on this truck. One of my rear brake lines failed do to corrosion last year. I patched that one and I'm going to patch this one since I do not have the money to replace all of the brake lines. It's just a matter of when not if the brake lines cause my death or some innocent people to die when I crash into them because of these cheap junk brake lines gm put on these trucks!.

54 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 07/03/2011

Experienced brake failure due to corroded brake lines form the master cylinder to abs unit. The brakes failed while attempting to stop at red light on a major highway, causing the truck to enter the intersection. Both main lines blew causing total brake failure. Any vehicle in the north east region (USA) should come stock with stainless steel brake lines, as to prevent such premature corrosion.

55 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 06/25/2011

1. Brake line tubing corrosion blew a hole in the brake tubing while braking to make a turn. 2. Brake line fluid drained from master cylinder, truck can not be driven, it took some serious driving to get the truck slowed down to veer into an open parking lot before slamming into a car in front of me. 3. The truck had to be towed and is now sitting in the driveway without brakes. I have been reading about other chevy silverado owners having this same brake line corrosion failure.

56 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 03/11/2011

The contact owns a 2001 Chevrolet silverado. The contact was traveling 35 mph when he had to abruptly apply the brakes to avoid crashing into a vehicle that drove into his lane. There was an unusual increase in stopping distance and time. The contact inspected the vehicle and discovered that the brake lines from the master cylinder to the abs unit and from the abs unit to the front brakes were corroded. The failure mileage and current mileage was 115,000.

57 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 01/25/2011

The brakes failed in traffic approaching a stop light. A severe collision was narrowly avoided. The mechanic determined that a brake line between the abs controller and the master cylinder had rusted through causing a sudden rupture and brake failure. In addition, all brake lines were found to be severely rusted from end to end.

58 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 09/21/2010

Complete brake failure. I went to start the pickup truck and when I stepped on the brake pedal it went to the floor. The truck had just been used a few minutes earlier and the brakes worked fine. Due to rust, a brake line burst. I thought with a dual master cylinder I would never loose both front and back brakes at the same time. This was not the case. The brakes do not to stop this vehicle.

59 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 08/07/2010

Brakes failed while driving down my driveway, and the pedal went almost to the floor. All five lines leading to the abs unit located inside the frame rail, under the drivers seat, are severely rusted and will need to be replaced. One of the lines rusted through and sprung a leak. Since the lines are running along the top side of the frame rail from the master cylinder and to the front wheels, the replacement will be a difficult job. To the best of my knowledge, the manufacturer does not carry replacement lines and they must be custom bent. Since the lines are typically installed on a bare frame without the chassis, the original installation is much easier than field replacement. Given the difficulty of field replacement and the consequences of brake failure, the manufacturer should use a higher quality original part.

60 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 07/10/2010

The brake line running from abs unit to rear of truck ruptured in a parking lot in July of 2010. Several months later, in December of 2010, both brake lines running from master cylinder to abs unit ruptured when backing out of my driveway. I noticed the front brake lines going from abs unit to each front caliper were corroded in early March 2012 and replaced before they could rupture. It's a good thing I replaced them because barely moving the lines resulted in ruptures in both lines before they could be unthreaded to be replaced. Thankfully none of the ruptures resulted in an accident.

61 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 05/29/2009

For the past two weeks I've noticed that when I apply pressure to the brakes the truck does not stop immediately. It rolls a little and it scares me because I am pressing the brake into the floor of the truck with both feet. This is happening every time I drive and with this being the only transportation I have, I have to continue to drive it. I am currently calling around for quotes and notice that there may be a recall on this problem but it is currently being researched because of relations to the problem being salt crystals. Either way this not normal wear and tear. Its a problem for certain chevy models and year. I've been informed that it may be the master cylinder or the booster. Either way I need to get it fixed but if there is going to be a recall, it needs to happen soon. I have been quoted an estimated price of at least $300.

62 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 04/17/2009

I currently own a 2002 Silverado 1500 z71 with 22,300 miles. Today while driving it I noticed that the brakes were a little softer then normal and not stopping the truck very well. Shortly after that while coming to a stop I pressed the brakes harder and they went to the floor and I had very little to no stopping. I had to use the e-brake to stop the truck and get it off the road. It seems that the brake lines from the master cylinder to the abs box rusted out. This truck is not a daily driver and rarely will see a road when there is salt on it. With this few of miles I don't think this should happen due to the fact that I was lucky and could have been in a bad accident. I have also found out that this has happened on a lot of other silverado/sierras. Currently the lines are still broken and have yet to be replaced but will need to be.

63 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 03/27/2009

The contact owns a 1998 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that the brakes repeatedly failed. The hubs, calipers, rotors, and the master cylinder were repaired three separate occasions. Whenever the brakes were depressed, they would vibrate violently and seize. The vehicle was taken to two different mechanic shops for the repairs, but they could not diagnose the failure. The dealer was not notified. The manufacturer was notified and stated that there were no recalls or warranties available. No further assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 100,000 and the current mileage was 105,000.

64 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 09/25/2008

Sudden metal hydraulic brake line rupture one of two brake line runs between the master cylinder and abs frame mounted controller ruptured. The exterior appearance of the line is extremely rusty. The line is in a bundle of four lines - two going to the abs controller and two returning from the abs controller to each of the two front wheels. The other three lines have extremely rusty surfaces and appear near rupture as well. The failure occurred when braking for a traffic light and was made apparent by the brake pedal suddenly dropping to the floor. No accident or injuries occurred. The failure is not yet corrected. I have only called repair shop for estimate. The estimate was $400 to $600 per line or $1600 to $2400 for replacing all four lines based on material cost plus $82 / hr labor.

65 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 08/09/2006

Each of the 3 brakes lines under the master cylinder has failed on separate occasions, fortunately all noticed when backing out of a parking spot. On all 3 occasions, the vehicle experienced a near total brake failure. All the line had rusted through and required replaced at my expense. The dual brake master cylinder does not provide acceptable emergency braking with a ruptured line. I am reporting my incidents following a report on the local news about these same failures happening on many gm trucks. My vehicle was purchased used with approximately 61,000 miles on it. Previous history is unknown. Date of original incident is probably not accurate.

66 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 07/29/2005

2000 Silverado 1500 with 70,500 miles July/05 my brakes stated to feel like I only had 70% of my braking capacity. It does not matter whether I stomp on the brake or brake with increasing pressure, the antilock will not engage nor will the tires lock up. I replaced all 4 rotors and pads (non oe @ 62,500 miles). The lack of braking was still present. Next I replaced the master cylinder which has not solved the problem. I just had the dealer look at the system, they noted the rear pads were worn (after 8,000 miles). The dealership also said the non oe pads were probably the cause of the lack of braking. My concern was the fact that the lack of braking started when the oe pads were still on the truck.
