While driving my truck down the freeway, the engine light suddenly came on and a warning appeared on the dashboard stating "reduced engine power" and the truck shut itself down to 10 miles an hour in seconds. I had vehicles coming up behind me traveling at 60 mph and higher that nearly hit me from behind. Even if I floored the gas pedal the truck would not speed up making it extremely difficult to get out of the way of oncoming traffic. The local chevy dealership had my truck 2 days and charged me $400. 00 for an emissions part. I picked my truck up on Thursday evening, Jan. 20, 2011, and it broken down the very next morning with the same issue. I took it right back over there and they told me to return it on Monday Jan. 24 which I did. They returned the truck to me on weds. Jan. 26, and said they couldn't figure out the problem but may have been a loose wire. The truck broke down with the same issue again on Feb 14. The dealership had it another 3 days and said they soldered some connections. Again on March 10, my truck broke down again, same issue. They had my truck until March 14, and again charged me for replacing the wiring harness and throttle body. I picked my truck up at 6 pm mon March 14 and it already broke down again this morning March 16, same issue. On two occasions now I have had my kids in the back seat, driving on the freeway when the engine decides to shut itself down. No one at chevy seems to care if we are injured or killed when we are hit due to this defective truck. I am not the only chevy owner reporting this problem. Not only are there complaints all over the internet, but the dealership had another truck in at the same time as mine at the March 10 visit, with the exact same issue and it had already been in multiple times for the same issue as well.

Wiring harness caught on fire under dash.
The climate control fan speed module has shorted out causing the wiring harness to melt. The module overheated to a point that caused smoke and almost ignited will could have resulted in a fire under the dashboard.
The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. While driving approximately 50 mph, the contact smelled burning wire underneath the dashboard. He looked under the dashboard and discovered a red, glowing, burning wiring harness, which he then unplugged. The blower motor resistor and the wiring harness failed. The current mileage was 68,357 and failure mileage was 66,000.
The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that the heating circuits under the dashboard were heating up excessively and would crackle and sparkle. There were no recalls for this failure. The manufacturer would not assume liability for the failure. The contact was concerned that a fire could occur. He also stated that the heater and defroster were inoperable. The failure and current mileages were less than 22,588.
Blower motor under the dash quit working. A fellow worker has the same truck and it also happened to his truck a couple of months ago. G. M. Dealer said the wiring harness and resistor was shorted and needed to be replaced. Over $400 dollars for repairs. The person that fixed my friends truck said he was lucky his truck didn't catch on fire.

2005 silverado truck, interior of truck caught fire in the middle of the night when family is sleeping. Believed to have started in power seat motor only days after a new battery replaced. Wiring problems versus defective instrument that drew power off the battery to begin fire?.
Fire in center of dash.
(1) hot humid weather was apparently too much for my vehicle air conditioner. (2) the air conditioner blower motor resistor failed in addition to the associated electrical wiring going to the resistor. (3) the parts that were replaced cost $51. 62, and the labor to replace the parts cost $445. 00. The failure occurred with just over 31,000 miles on the vehicle. This failure could have just as easily resulted in a fire within the dashboard assembly in the passenger compartment of the vehicle.
The fan speed selector wiring plug in the passenger side compartment started smoking when the fan was on speed 5. I got it turned off and looked at it when I got home and found the plug at the hot wire and the hot wire (red one) were melted. It happened at 37590 miles. Could happen to more vehicles.
This problem pertains to a 2005 chevy silverado. The vent fan / air conditioning shut off while I was driving. I started to see smoke come out from under the dashboard by the passenger side. The connector that was attached to the resistor for the a/c and heater was melting due to extreme heat. The black wire was glowing bright red and was melting the plastic on the connector. After a phone call to the dealership where the truck was purchased, I found out that chevy already new about the problem and that they had seen it many times. The parts to repair it were in stock, they were purchased and replaced. The fan and a/c are now working.

Smoke filled cab , sparks and flames from under passenger dash.
The stalk for the combination turn signal, windshield wiper, cruise control, broke resulted in unreliable operation of the windshield wipers and unreliable turn singal operation. In the case of the 2001 silverado the windshield wipers activated when the turn signalwas selected. Since this same control was used for several critical functions, including turn signals, wipers, and cruise control activation and deactivation, I expect certain failure modes could present a serious safety issue. Researching this issue, it seems to be a common problem on this model silverado and other gm vehicles that use the same combination control.

: the contact stated that while driving at 40 mph, the vehicle lost the fifth fan speed on the air conditioner. Grey smoke began to come out of the vents, accompanied by a burning smell. The vehicle was taken to a service dealer, who determined that the wiring harness for the air conditioner had melted. There were no repairs immediately made.
