4 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 04/01/2013

The speedometer is erratic, displaying 40, 50, 80 mph running, sitting still in park. Then will peg to 130 mph when driven. Later, it will eventually correct itself after cranking 4, 5, 8 times and work properly temporarily. Then repeat. This is a common, known problem with these gauge clusters and Chevrolet div. Refuses to fix at no cost because the truck is outside the timeframe stated in "special policy # 07187", but it meets the mileage and VIN criteria. To the best of my knowledge, the truck did not fail during the stated timeframe. Cost of the repair is $560 and I believe Chevrolet should fix it at no cost to the owner.

5 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 03/15/2013

Was driving about 60mph and speedometer went to zero then wouldn't go past 15mph after that. Sometimes it works and then not.

6 Instrument Panel problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 02/01/2013

Speedometer stuck at 70mph and stayed that way for a few days. After multiple starts of the vehicle, the speedometer eventually worked its way back to zero. It's now happened again. After contacting gm, they told me to take it to an authorized shop for a diagnosis, which I did and they confirmed it was the issue that gm issued the contract adjustment for, but since it has now expired, there is nothing they could do for me. So why did they ask to have the truck taken in for an inspection? the vehicle now has 66,000 miles on it and I'm very displeased with the customer service.

7 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 12/06/2011

I was operating the vehicle on the interstate. The speedometer showed 70 mph; however, everyone was passing me. I pulled over to investigate but the speedometer would not go lower than 30 at a complete stop. It did go back to 0 within a few a days; however, it is again showing 20 mph at a dead stop. Dealers/mechanics have given me three different stories as to how to fix the problem. Per a lot of other similar reports, this appears to be a defect with the vehicle and should not be at my expense. It is a severe safety factor. I've always been a chevy silverado man but I'm feeling disappointed in gm by not backing their product like they used to do.

10 Instrument Panel problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 12/22/2010

Speedometer on my 2004 chevy silverado stopped working. As I have been doing my research this is a very common problem with thousands of people. Chevy has offered to fix the problem for trucks under 70000. Most problem happen after the number they selected. This is a safety issue.

Speedometer not working properly. Does not read accurate speed. When needle starts to rise, the motion is not constant. The needle instead "ticks" up upon acceleration.

13 Instrument Panel problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 11/05/2010

My cluster og gauges speedometer, oil, temp, mileage stop working all the time, I was stopped once because my gauges stopped working and got an unlawful speedometer ticket. There is a serious problem with this 04 chevy Silverado 1500.

14 Instrument Panel problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 10/22/2010

2003 Chevrolet silverado speedometer sometimes does not work and pressure gage sometimes works intermittently along with the speedometer.

15 Instrument Panel problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 08/01/2010

The contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. While parked, the contact noticed that all the lights on the instrument panel were not working. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostics or repair. The approximate failure mileage was 42,000.

16 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 07/05/2010

The speedometer reading is very erratic and does not display the correct speed any more. Speedometer reads 30mph + while sitting still. Gm dealer claimed that the vehicle is outside the 70,000 mile replacement period since the vehicle has 80,000 miles on it.

17 Instrument Panel problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 07/05/2010

While driving at any speed, I hear a chime from the instrument panel, then notice that the vehicle can no longer accelerate. I also notice that the engine light is on, and there is a message displayed stating the vehicle is in "low engine power mode". At this point, the vehicle can still be driven but at very low speed only. Any power for maneuverability under heavy traffic or highway conditions is gone. After pulling over to the side of the road and shutting off the engine, the engine light stays on but the engine power may have returned to normal (for a while). The following day or so - the engine light may even stay off, and everything appears normal. When the problem is first noticed, it seems to recur every few days. As time goes on however (maybe 2 weeks) the problem happens more frequently and is less apt to "reset" just by turning off the engine. The first time I took the vehicle into the dealer, they replaced the throttle control sensor connector, for a total bill of about $350. Now, after only 10 month, the problem has recurred. I took it back to the dealer yesterday, after only two of these "events" within one week, and was charged another $535 to have the throttle body replaced ("faulty sensors within the body"). Last night the problem came back again (yes - same day!). Today the dealer added a "redundant" ground to the throttle body (no charge this time). I was told by the mechanic that this problem has shown up on many vehicles like mine, and that gm seems to be at a loss as to what is causing the problem. This is an electronic throttle control (no direct linkage between gas pedal and carburetor). I am thankful that gm designed this to fail with power loss rather than full power (Toyota), but I believe this is a safety concern none the less. Gm is obviously aware of the problem but is doing nothing to repair an obvious design flaw in their product.

18 Instrument Panel problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 07/01/2010

2003 Chevrolet silverado k1500. Consumer states problem with electronic dash the speedometer has been inconsistently working since July 2010. The gauge would be fine at first, when suddenly it would register speeds that were not correct and the needle was slow to respond to any change in speed and it would not drop to zero when the consumer came to a complete stop. It would usually correct itself overnight, but not always and it would remain normal until the next intermittent episode. Also, there was an intermittent clicking noise coming from the dash. The consumer also stated the doors would lock and unlock on their own while stopped and while driving. The headlights went out briefly, all of the dash displays and side door light panels worked intermittently. The power heated seats would jerk and make noises.

19 Instrument Panel problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 06/04/2010

Speedometer is not working at all, will not register which is causing the transmission to slip. It is constant, and we cannot drive the vehicle we had to take vehicle to have it repaired, it cost $492. 50. GMC/chevy is aware of the problem but no recall has been issued and if your vehicle is 7 years new or has less than 80,000 miles it is being fixed for free. My vehicle is only 7 years old but has 100,000. I also own a 2004 GMC envoy which appeared to be running okay and then on the way home from getting the chevy fixed now the speedometer on the envoy is not working. I have attempted to call GMC customer service and I am just getting the run around. I spoke to john at jba Chevrolet (he is the mechanic - 410-766-6305) he said this is a known problem.

20 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

2005 chevy crew cab. Speedometer problem. Incorrect speed reading. 17 year old son now drives truck and concerned about safety and tickets. Is gm going to recall this obvious safety hazard. Concerned parent.

21 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 04/15/2010

Speedometer works intermittently.

22 Instrument Panel problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 04/08/2010

Instrument cluster quit working. Everything was working fine going to work then home. Started the truck to go to church and nothing worked on the instrument cluster with exception of the lights.

23 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 03/19/2010

My vehicle is 2005 chevy Silverado 1500 purchased in 2007 with mileage of approximately 47,000 miles at the time of purchase. Upon driving thevehicle for three months, my speedometer started sticking intermittently, but would reset. Since, my speedometer sticks on a daily basis, sometimes all day. The only remedy has been to turn my vehicle off and back on, where as my speedometer goes down at five mile per hour increments until back at zero. In the last three weeks, my tachometer has also malfunctioned and does not read at times, therefore making it impossible to know how fast I am going nor how high my engine is idling or increasing/decreasing in speed. There is no apparent event leading up to the failure and my conclusion is that the instrument cluster is defective in its entirety. In March of this year I was traveling in oklahoma during a sudden snow storm in which traffic was traveling at an estimated 20-30 miles per hour. I accelerated to an unknown speed, however not excessively. I lost control and my vehicle slide across two lanes of traffic opposite the lane I was in and I slide into a ditch in which my bottom air dam was torn off. I was able to repair the damage however I only accelerated because I thought I was traveling at ten miles per hour. When my vehicle came to a rest in the ditch, my speedometer was still at ten miles per hour. A state trooper did assist me by getting a tow truck, however no report was filed by me. I believe that if I had know how fast I was going, this may not have happened. It is inconclusive, however I do believe the malfunction is a safety concern. I have priced the replacement, which is the only remedy, at or about $450-700 and this is not an isolated malfunction. I have researched and found that there are many, many cases of this very defect in the same model truck from the same manufacturer and believe that it should be a recall, not a "special provision" du to the manufacturers knowing since 2003 about this particular defect.

24 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 03/13/2010

Our 2005 chevy silverado's speedometer broke at 57, 218 miles. We called a dealership in the area and were told that there are no current recalls for this and told me that they wouldn't be able to do anything for me. I told them that I do not think a speedometer should break when the vehicle has less than 60,000 miles on it. I found a recall online, but evidently it doesn't cover my vehicle. . . Only certain 2005 silverado models. . . . I don't feel I should have to pay for yet another thing to break on this vehicle (hub assembly twice, actuator broke 3 times before the dealership would actually listen to us and fix it correctly). I want to file a complaint to be pro active and report the problem in the hope that gm will do something about it and start making their vehicles better.

25 Instrument Panel problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 03/04/2010

Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6). 2003 Chevrolet silverado, [xxx] sticking speedometer, unable to determine correct speed. Outside warranty extension parameters of 7 yr 80,000 miles. I believe this is a safety issue and warrants a recall, not a warranty extension. Contacted customer service and they are unwilling to help. Must repair at own expense.

26 Instrument Panel problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 02/20/2010

2004 Chevrolet silverado extended cab, poor braking. Replaced brakes and rotors and still have poor braking. Have to bear down on pedal to stop. Speedometer reading goes up and down on it's own. Had a speed sensor replaced but didn't correct the problem had the dealership replace steering coupling in steering column because of clunking in the steering. The clunking, loose feeling has started again.

27 Instrument Panel problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 02/15/2010

The speedometer on my 2004 silverado z71 extended cab either doesn't work or shows incorrect speeds. Gm has issued a recall on this up to 70,000 miles and while I have 106,000 miles currently, the problem started at 67,000 miles. I was over 100,000 miles when the recall letter arrived by mail. I did not previously fix the problem for the same reason I still haven't, lack of funds. If this is a known problem and safety issue due to faulty equipment gm should be required to remove the mileage requirement. I should not have to pay for a known faulty part simply because my work entails extensive driving.

28 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 01/29/2010

I have a 2005 chevy silverado and all the dashboard gauges stopped working. When I called gm they said they knew about this problem, but never sent out any notices. They would cover parts and labor for mileage of 80,000 and below. My truck has 102,200 miles. I feel gm should stand up for their products no matter the mileage. It is nothing that I did to cause the gauges to stop working.

29 Instrument Panel problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 01/22/2010

Speedometer on chevy 1500 silverado 2003 erratic at times. Dealers at first did not acknowledge a recall, and now state I am out of policy allowance. Never received notice of recall, only heard in news. Problem has become much worse in past 2 months, I first reported to dealer at 70k in Jan 2010.

30 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 01/20/2010

Purchased a 2005 Chevrolet k1500 silverado used in 10/2009. In 01/2010 the speedometer stopped working at approximately 72k miles. Dealership advised us that this is a known problem in several gm full size trucks and suvs 2003-2007 model years. Gm will not fully cover the cost to replace the defective part. We argue that a speedometer is not a wear and tear item, that the presence of multiple complaints by thousands of consumers prove that this part is consistently failing. We argue that proper operation of a speedometer has a direct impact on the safe operation of a vehicle. We believe that gm should be required to fully cover the cost of the replacement at no expense to the owner of all affected vehicles. If a speed related crash resulted and the liable party was driving an affected vehicle, gm would share in the liability of that loss. This again points that this is a safety component that is consistently failing in thousands of these vehicles.

31 Instrument Panel problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 01/07/2010

2003 Chevrolet silverado speedometer is showing I'm traveling at 70 mph when actually doing about 10 mph, and at other times shows I'm traveling 30 mph when actually going significantly faster. This is causing a safety issue, and it appears that this is a systemic issue with Chevrolet.

32 Instrument Panel problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 12/30/2009

The contact owns a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that she was involved in an accident in December 2009. Since the accident, the speedometer stopped working. The needle on the speedometer no longer moved. She took the vehicle to the dealership and was told that the instrument cluster needed to be replaced and would have to be done so at her expense. She had not called the manufacturer to-date. The vehicle had not been repaired at the time of the complaint. The current mileage was approximately 89,000. The failure mileage was approximately 88,000.

33 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 12/21/2009

Around December 2009 I noticed that my tachometer was working intermittently. The problem has now moved over to my speedometer which is registering my speed +/- 25 mph off the actual speed. This is worse than me texting while driving as I am always having to pace my speed with over vehicles or trying to mentally gauge my actual speed.

34 Instrument Panel problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 11/14/2009

The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. While driving 65 mph the speedometer registered the speed at 120 mph. Whenever he reduced the speed, the speedometer reset itself to 55 mph. The failure will be diagnosed by the dealer. The failure and the current mileages were 53,000. Updated 01/05/10 updated 01/07/10.

35 Instrument Panel problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 10/18/2009

I own a 2004 chevy silverado. It had only 59,000 miles at the time of the defect. The defect is the speedometer on the truck. I was returning from an out of state trip when I noticed I was passing everyone on the interstate. My wife told me to slow down but I told her I was doing the speed limit. At least I thought I was about ten minutes later I looked down at the speedometer and it said I was going 30 miles per hour and I must have been doing 65-75. I slow down to what looked like a safe speed because I did not want to get a ticket or cause an accident. Later we stopped for gas and when I returned on the highway I had no reading at all. I had 800 more mile to go and could not tell how fast I was driving on the interstate. As we made our way back home over the next two days the speedometer read anywhere from 70,40,25 or nothing while on the interstate. I contacted the chevy dealer only to be told they was nothing can could do since the warranty expire. I looked for a recall but could not find anything. What I did find was over 40 complaints on the website called auto beef where owners of 2004 silverado was having the same unfixed issue. Updated 01/25/10 as of today I have not fixed the problem due to financial problems due to the holiday and lack of fund thereafter{like everyone else!}I feel this is a safety issue and I feel that chevorlet should issue a recall on this problem since there are so many with this serious issue with such low mileage on their vehicles. They are probably more out there that just paid to have theirs fixed after being told by the dealers that they could not help them with this default. Please look into for the safety of our drivers. Thanks for your time on this concern. Updated 01/25/10 updated 01/26/10.
