Chevrolet Suburban owners have reported 19 problems related to battery cable (under the electrical system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Vehicle dash and headlights turn off while driving, engine stalls and dies, power steering becomes inoperative. Transmission pops out of gear and freewheels. Service stabilitrack light. Very dangerous situation for my wife and 5 kids when this happens on curvy backroads at night like just happened last night! this is also the same problem as our previous chevy tahoe so we knew the problem was likely related to poor quality battery cables that are degrading prematurely. This should not be happening on a 3-4 year old vehicle. After searching a gm web forum and finding other people complaining about the same issue, there was a reference to gm TSB 18-na-161 on this exact issue I am absolutely amazed that gm has not done a recall on this yet, as it is a major safety failure likely to cause a crash and potentially a fatality. I checked the tightness on the connections by hand, which were both very tight, then I reseated and torqued the battery terminal connection. I measured the resistance across the power jumper, lug to lug. This is gm part number 84494554, and I measured 0. 3 ohms across this little section of wire at multiple points on the lugs. Trimming back the insulation and continuing the measure, the highest resistance appears to be coming from the wire to the lug connection at the fuse bus, and not the crimp connection at the battery terminal, and not the bolted connection to the bus. There were some strands broken at this connection. I made and added a temporary jumper of the same wire gage, and the resistance across the same measured points dropped to 0. 0 ohms. Absolutely a major safety issue if the vehicle suddenly dies without warning. I can see this same issue happening once, I forgave gm once years ago, but with the same issue happening to two different vehicles 8 model years apart, the safety of my family is too important to buy gm product in the future.

Tl- the contact owns a 2013 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated that various electrical failures would intermittently occur while driving at various speeds. He stated that the automatic doors would independently lock and unlock, several warning lights would flash on the instrument panel, and that the home screen would flicker on and off. Once the failure occurred, the vehicle would stall without warning. Each time the failure occurred, the contact was able to pull off to the side of the road, wiggle the battery cables underneath the hood and restart the vehicle. The contact had taken the vehicle to an independent mechanic who was unable to diagnose the failure. He also contacted three different dealers, gold rush Chevrolet(570 grass valley hwy, auburn, CA 95603), john l sullivan Chevrolet(350 automall dr, roseville, CA 95661) and winner Chevrolet(1624 s canyon way, colfax, CA 95713), all of whom stated that they had never heard of such a failure. Upon investigation, the contact discovered NHTSA campaign number: 14v614000(electrical system) which he linked to his failure. The manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 160,000. Jo.

Vehicle was serviced at the local Chevrolet dealership subject to NHTSA recall 18v-586 on Friday, September 14, 2018. The next day, 9/15/18, vehicle experienced same problems that were happening prior to being serviced. Specifically, on Saturday(9/15) at approx. 4:30 p. M. Cst, while making a rolling right hand turn on green the vehicle lost power steering and lost all power. No one was directly behind me as I stopped in the middle of the city street. I put on the flashers and, after unsuccessfully trying to restart the vehicle in neutral, was able to restart the car while in park. I noticed the battery voltage meter was lower than normal for the remainder of my trip, however, it had returned to normal the next morning. This has been an ongoing problem which started on Aug. 9, 2018. First trip to the chevy dealership resulted in replacing the f-module. Problems persisted and the next recommendation was to replace the negative battery cable, which was done on 9/10/18. Now, after servicing due to recall, I continue to have the same problem.

Engine died on highway lost all power and no steering. Was told by dealer it was a bad neg battery cable. It is shocking that a bad battery cable can cause a deadly situation. Certainly someone will die from this defect if they havent already. Dealer claimed to repair the vehicle and it happened only a few miles after I picked up the vehicle. Error code was p0601. They have the car for repair again, but I refuse to every drive the death trap. I have had 20 Suburbans and I hope this is an isolated defect not one that affects all Suburbans. This defect is extremely dangerous. Someone will certainly die from this defect.
Car does not start. Completley dead battery. Easily jump starts. Alt shows 14. 5 charge after jump. . Thishas happened 6 times. T ook to dealership twice. Hey say - negative battery cable. .

Engine intermittently goes into "reduced engine power" "traction control disabled" for no apparent reason. Engine power is reduced by two thirds. Issue has been occurring for approximately 2 years now. Gm/chevy dealership has been unable to resolve the issue. I've had the car in the shop over 20 times some times on a weekly basis. Throttle body, tac, battery cables, and other components have been changed to no avail. Several close calls on the freeway with 18 wheelers bearing down on rear end when issue has occurred. I no longer allow my wife and kids in the car. I'm sure someone will eventually die as a result of this issue and maybe then gm will address the issue. Hopefully when it happens it will not involve small children which is what Suburbans are typically purchased for. . . To drive around families with small children. Consumers thinking they are purchasing a good size vehicle that will keep their family safe should steer away from gm products.

The battery cables leak acid, . When the battery becomes corroded, there is no power to the vehicle. The dealer has told me that the battery cables are bad, which we have replaced, and the problem continues. We have had the batteries (replaced more than one) checked, and they are fine. We have had the posts replaced, and the problem gets worse. The latest, (im stranded right now) seems to be the worst yet. At first when this started happening, it was a couple of months apart, now its every week. Also when it started the cables where really corroded before the engine quit. Now they can be wiped off with a dry towel. Also, the a/c has stopped working due to cracks in hoses. (from the acid) being as I live in texas, even if the truck is running I cant drive it in the summer, even if we fix the hoses it happens again. When I had the vehicle towed to the dealer the last time, they told me the battery was fine, but I needed to spend 400. 00 to have the cables replaced again. How is this problem really corrected. Talking to other people who had Suburbans I have found that a number of them have had vehicle fires due to the acid problem!!! having children in the car, im terrified to drive my truck. (when it even starts) I cannot sell it to someone else and put them in danger. The fuel pump has failed. We were told that we have to keep a 1/4 tank of gas in the truck. Well it is going out again and I keep it full! also, something to do w/ the abs booster being bad. Well my brakes are failing again. (less than a year later) the pads are fine. The acid leaking has caused damage to our driveways, not to mention the kids and animals in the neighborhood getting into the acid on the ground. Please send me any info that might help me. Im am going to contact the dealer and talk to them again about the information the I have found, im not the only one this is happening to.

Consumer stated that while driving vehicle cut off. Consumer took vehicle to a Chevrolet dealer/mechanic, and each time was told that vehicle needed new battery cables. The battery cables were replaced twice, but vehicle kept doing the same thing.
Battery connection cables-cables wiggle loose and car cannot be started. This has occurred numerous times in the past 4 months. The dealership states that they know this is a problem however, they say there is no way to fix it.

I have a diesel version of the Suburban, on several occasions, I have noticed that the battery cable connecting the two batteries is very loose and will not stay in the channel designed for it over the fan shroud. I replace it each time, while coming to work this morning, I hit a bump in the road, and then heard an awful noise. I pulled over, opened the hood to see sparks flying everywhere. I immediately shut the truck off to investigate and found that the cable had come out of its place yet again & fallen into the fan. I was lucky I shut it off when I did, there was only a few "threads" of copper holding it together. Had it cut completely in two, there most likely would have been a fire.

Brake pedal went to floor without stopping vehicle. Battery acid leakage ran down battery cable and corroded hydraulic line, causing failure (independent mechanic assessment).
In February my car died while leaving a parking lot. I turned out to be acid corrosion on the battery. I have already had to have my positive battery cable replaced under extended warranty due to acid corrosion. Even after cleaning the acid off I am still having problems and will have to replace the battery even though it says it is still good. I know of another Suburban (95) also having the same problem.
Pinion seal on rear diff. Leaked at 36k miles, fuel injectors clogged at 40k and inoperable oxygen sensor. Battery leaked at side terminal (38k miles), corroded battery cables and shelf. Winsheild wipers do not go all the way down to the starting position when turned off. Currently having problems with starting the vehicle. Starter was checked and is o. K. Probably electrical, due to leaking battery or a computer problem.
There is a strong odor of gas fumes in vehicle. Dealer was notified about this problem and tightened gas cap. Consumer still smelling gas fumes. On may 28th, vehicle would not start. This was to due to a stripped battery cable. Battery and battery cable has been replaced by the dealership.
Battery leaks and subsequent positive connector/cables rottening from acid prevent current flow to the starter and to the computer - so that the engine will not start. It is necessary to loosen the battery cables, and clean soak them in a mixture of soda and water, then rehook! my wife can no longer use the car, because she is unable make repairs of this nature, in the very good likelihood that the failure to crank will occur when she is driving. I have previously reported this, but did not report that I have just discovered that battery acid leaks have caused severe rusting of the right front brake tubing directly under the battery connections. This presents a potentially serious safety matter. Fyi, the car now has had 3 delco 78 series battery in it - first two replaced because of leaking!! , and now the new 3rd one is leaking. William j fisher.
Dealer refused to warrant the cable, although the extended warranty clearly indicates that it was covered.
