2005 Chevrolet Suburban. Consumer writes in regards to vehicle odometer problems. The consumer began having problems with the speedometer approximately 2 years ago. Intermittently, the needle on the odometer would climb above the actual speed he was traveling, then move up and down tens of miles above the actual speed, at times, it would rise to 120 and remain there. When he turned the vehicle off and on again, it worked fine, until the next time.
Speedometer stayed at speed I was driving when I stopped the car. When I restarted the car it did not return to zero but started at last speed I was driving, then increase from there. Speedometer finally stayed at 100 mph, it did not return to zero and I was unable to determine speed of car when driving. Rpm also malfunction, it stayed at 1. 5 when driving and didn't vary when I increased or decreased my speed. Had to have it replaced as I could not determine speed I was driving. No official recall, only a class action suit. My make/model/year was part of the cars affected in the suit, only I didn't qualify for reimbursement of repair because the problem occurred outside of the 7 year 80,000 mile parameter gm set up for reimbursement.
The speedometer gives a false reading that could cause operation of the vehicle at an unsafe speed. This first happened while driving with my family. I noticed that the speedometer seemed to be giving a false reading. Using a gps my wife was able to confirm that I was unknowingly traveling at a speed very different than the speed limit. The issue is intermittent . The dealer says this is a known problem but will not fix it despite the obvious safety concerns.

I went to washington auto show today 2/4/2012 and one of your rep gave me a card about your service. I came home and check out your website and found out you have been receiving complaints about instrument panel of chevy Suburban. I bought a 2005 chevy Suburban in March 2005 from win kelly chevorlet in clarksville, MD. About middle of last year I noticed that my speedometer is always stuck, running high than the speed I am driving and just exactly as being described by other owners of these vehicles. What is the department doing to help with this manufacturer's defect and have it corrected rather than we consumers being saddled with unexpected repair cost?.
Instrument panel - cluster device -- panel/ speedometer went dead. Gm service dealer told us, " the entire truck could die and stop working as a result. ".
Gage failure, specifically the speedometer, on the instrument panel. The speedometer works intermittently and also gets stuck at a speed > than 75 mph when my vechicle is going much slower than that and then registers > 120mph when I am going around 60-65 mph.
My 2005 Chevrolet Suburban has 79,985 miles and this week while driving route 95 (70 mph highway in the south) from new jersey to south carolina my speedometer started showing a much higher speed then I was traveling. I was using my gps at the time and it said I was doing 69 mph while my gauge showed a constant climb till it reached 120 mph and flat lined beyond that point. This was a 1600 mile round trip and if I had not had my gps with me I would not know how fast or slow I was going. I was waiting for something else to go wrong. While in south carolina I went to recalls on the internet with 2005 gm SUV's and found a whole bunch of similar complaints, yet gm (Chevrolet) has not done anything that I could find. I returned home today and called my local Chevrolet dealer and explained to the service department what had happened and they said they never heard of this and gave me an appointment for next Monday 1/3/2011 to bring in the SUV. Since this car is out of service I am holding my breath as to what the bill could be. This is a very dangerous thing, I could be not looking at the gauge and be running right into a high speed error and putting my family in harms way. Can anyone help?.
Speedometer goes to 120 randomly.
While driving the speedometer jumped to 20 mph and never dropped back down.
The speedometer quits working or gets jumpy and sporadic in when and how it works. Vehicle only has 57000 miles on it. The only event that we thought caused it was the really cold temperatures but its warmer now and completely quit working. It is everytime we are in the vehicle driving that it doesn't work. We have not got it fixed yet. Researching problem first to make sure no recalls were done on it first.
The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Suburban 1500. The contact stated that the speedometer gauge and fuel gauge would not display an accurate reading whenever the vehicle was in operation. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for a diagnostic testing where they detected that the needle within both gauges was stuck and informed that the instrument panel would need to be replaced to correct the problem. The manufacturer previously issued a voluntary recall associated with the instrument panel however the contact did not receive the notification. The vehicle was not included in the recall due to the excessive mileage, although the manufacturer stated that they would consider extending the special coverage under the recall. The contact was waiting upon a response from the manufacturer regarding the repair. The failure mileage was approximately 82,000.
The speedometer on my 2003 chevy Suburban is off by over 50 mph. I had the same problem on 2005 silverado. I see alot of complaints over this same problem with other owners, why is gm not held responsible for a recall. There is no way to know how fast I am actually going, if that is not a safety concern then I'm not sure what is.
Speedometer quit working correctly it does not go below 42 mph and sometimes will not go below 90 mph.
The contact owns a 2003 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated that while driving 25 mph the speedometer would malfunction leaving the contact unaware of the speed that the vehicle was traveling. The contact also stated that the speedometer malfunctioned when the vehicle was in park. The speedometer would display 60 mph when the vehicle was not moving. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer who stated that the vehicle had under 80,000 miles. The dealer also advised the contact to file a complaint with the manufacturer to have the vehicle repaired at no cost, but since the contact did not file a complaint with the manufacturer and has high mileage the contact was responsible for the repairs. The contact stated that the manufacturer should issue a recall since the issue with the dashboard was very common. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was 128,000.
Speedometer for Chevrolet Suburban 2005 no working properly, even when the car is stop the speedometer show 70 mph.
Speedometer has completely failed on my 2004 Chevrolet Suburban. This is a known, widespread problem that gm refuses to acknowledge as a safety issue . . . And refuses to make good on . . . Despite the fact that they have already been compensated by the parts supplier. It's time for the department of transportation to step in, declare this as a safety issue (which it is), and encourage general motors to make good on these faulty parts . . . Irrespective of the arbitrary mileage cutoff they have imposed. Additional background on the issue, from a media source. . . Read more...
2003 chevy surburban speedometer failure. Speedometer fails to give accurate reading while stopped or while driving. This causes the hazard of not being able to gauge speed accurately and makes it impossible to comply with local, state and federal speed laws for public roadways.
Speedometer on 2002 and 2003 model of Chevrolet Suburban sticks at a random place. We have been pulled over twice by police for driving too slow. Happened more than once.

Gauge for speedometer gets stuck or doesn't measure at all. Contacted the dealer and they said my vehicle was above the 70k amount & 80k. I have never been contacted on this issue. But yet I get mailings for service work. The failure is ongoing.
Fuel gauge and speedometer on GMC/chevy Suburban, 2004 year. This is the second time I have had to replace the gauge cluster and GMC/chevy dealer insist this is not a safety issue and not their problem. Since replacing the fist cluster, there have been many more complaints noted on the internet. This is clearly not an exceptional defect. The failure has come after about two to three years of use, and is worse in winter, but occurs inconsistently year around. I have not yet had an accident, but I did run out of gas in a rural area in the winter because the gauge said I had half a tank when it was infact empty. Speed is an issue in icy road conditions because it is very difficult to know if your speed is appropriate for the conditions when the speed shows zero or bounces around inconsistently. The failure has occurred at about 30k miles for each cluster. Lack of support by gm on this is disconcerting. Please assist.
2004 chevy Suburban speedometer stuck and max speed with 72,300 miles. I also own 2004 chevy tahoe with oil pressure gauge stuck at maximum with 92,000 miles.
My 2004 Chevrolet Suburban with 88,000 miles has a faulty speedometer and I am unable to tell what speed I am going at all times! I have a 4 year old and a 6 year old in the car with me often and this causes me great concern over the safety of my family and I.
The contact owns a 2003 Chevrolet Suburban. While driving the speedometer displayed inaccurate information. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for inspection. The technician stated that the instrument panel cluster needed to be replaced. No repairs were made. The failure and current mileages were 132,000. The VIN was unavailable.
The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Suburban. While driving approximately between 55-60 mph, the speedometer displayed inaccurate readings. While traveling at any given speed the failure occurred without warning. The authorized dealer stated that the instrument cluster required replacement. The vehicle has not been repaired at this time. The failure mileage was 55,000. The VIN was not available. The current mileage was 56,000. Updated 11/16/10.
The contact owns a 2003 Chevrolet Suburban 1500. He stated that on November of 2009 while driving approximately 25 mph, he noticed the speedometer was failing. The speedometer began to increase and decrease in speed until it stopped working. He took the vehicle to the dealer. The diagnosis located the failure as the cluster program. The dealer replaced the cluster program. The cost for repair was $500. 00. The manufacturer took a report and stated that they will not assist with the repair. The failure mileage was 94,000 the current mileage was 106,000.
Speedometer (pin or needle) freezes and periodically fluctuates. The driver is unable to determine the speed the vehicle is traveling. Upon approaching a hill, curve or bad weather the driver is able to negotiate speed properly, making this very dangerous and unsafe.
Speedometer does not work on my 2005 Chevrolet Suburban 1500. Stopped working at about 60,000 miles - there should be a recall as this is a common problem on this vehicle and it costs approx. $500 to fix and it is a safety hazard.
While driving in a 45mph zone, I checked my speedometer as I passed a police officer and it read 75mph so I immediately hit the brakes to slow. I didn't think I was speeding as I was going with the flow of traffic. Upon further investigation I discovered the default position of the gauge was 30mph. Eventually the speedometer was fully pegged at 120+ mph. I discussed the failure with colleagues at work and two independent mechanics and I discovered 1) the problem is common in GMC trucks in model years 2002-2006 and 2) the only way to correct it is to replace the entire instrument panel at a cost of approx. $700. I believe this is a safety hazard for two reasons: first, the failure is insidious and can cause an overreaction (one case ii know of where someone was pulling a boat trailer on a wet road, looked down and saw 90mph, hit the brakes and skidded off the highway), and second, because of the high cost of repair for older vehicles owners (as I am) will be hesitant to spend the money to fix one indicator needle. Thank you for assistance.
Speedometer reads incorrectly. Reads speeds over 30 mph while standing still, 120 mph while going 40mph, or nothing at all. It varies from day to day.
I noticed while I was driving that the speedometer seemed a little off and I was correct it starts at 10mph and while driving its about 13 mph off.
2004 chevy Suburban speedometer fails sporadically. Will stick at anytime without notice. Showing up to 120 miler per hour while parked. Cannot ascertain exact of speed of vehicle. Wper haps effects odometer and hour meter.
Speedometer stopped working when odometer read 76,000 miles. Does not work at all. Currently read 120 mph. Dealer will not fix as warranty has expired. Speedometer stopped working due to poor quality, not improper use.
