Failure Date: 02/20/2009

Speedometer sticks then at idle it says you are going 70 mph. If you start and stop the vehicle multiple it comes down 5 miles per hour and eventually you get back to zero. However, it will do this again and again and needs to be fixed because you can't tell you how fast you are going and I almost lost is on a 45 mile hour turn speedo said I was going 120 but in reality after stopping the Suburban I figured out I was doing about 55. This happens at all mileage and is a defect. Chevy recalled, I believe, up to 30,000 miles. Owners say it happens at 20,000; 40,000; 50,000, and well any mileage. I had 90,000 when mine started. I read one person who at 90,000 got his fixed free. Chevy wouldn't fix mine. This is a safety issue that needs to be called. Please help. I reported to chevy but they wouldn't fix. Internet says it can happen to any of the gauges in the cluster. There is a guy in oregon that replaces the 6 stepper motors. Chevy should do this for us. I've owned chevy's all my life (I"m 49) but if they don't fix this I'm done. I'd rather have a Toyota at least they are recalling. Do a google search - everyone is having this problem.

41 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 02/01/2009

Defective speedometer, have contacted chevy on several occasions and they refuse to pay for cost. Gm recalled same defect on other models except mine which is a 2005 chevy Suburban. Chevy told me my car exceeded all warranty due to mileage which is in the 80k range. This is a defective part and should be replaced no matter what miles I have on the car. Currently this problem is intermittent so I'm never sure if speedometer is right or wrong. My teenager drives my car and is unable to know what actual speed he's driving. This is potentially dangerous and I cannot afford to repair myself.

44 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 12/15/2008

2005 Chevrolet Suburban approx. 64,000 miles I have a faulty reading speedometer, which I feel is a safety hazard. I never know how fast I am going. Thankfully I have not had a accident or gotten a speeding ticket yet. I took it in to my mechanic, who tried replacing the speed sensor in the transmission, to no avail. I know there is a recall for 2003 & 2004 models. I tried calling the gm hotline and was told there are no recalls for 2005. I called a local dealer who told me the same thing. I don't know where to go from here. I would like to get it fixed before it reaches 70,000 miles. The dealer did ask if I was the original owner. I assume they would say if I wasn't, they would not fix it. I don't know what that should have to do with anything. What or where do I go from here?.

45 Instrument Panel problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 12/04/2008

Speedometer jumped from approx. 69 to 110 and continued to stay haywire and is not reading accurately. Apparently a known problem by chevy but they are only repairing in 7 years 70,000 miles. Of course I am at 4 years and at 77,000. I was over 74k miles when notice came out so even then would not have been able to get known defect fixed.

In November, my speedometer on my 2005 Suburban 1500 started fluctuating all over the place. Sometimes it doesn't even read on the numbers. Called dealer and they said their was a recall only up to 2004. I read on line that alot of people were having trouble with the cluster. Now in beginning of February my gas gage is reading wrong. My wife mainly drives it to take our kids to school and their activities, and errands. Will the dealer repair for free?.

53 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 11/01/2008

I have a 2005 1500 chevy Suburban that the speedometer reads erratic. It goes 120+ while at a red light or 25 cruising down the interstate. This has been going on for about 5 months now. I talk to the dealers and they say there is nothing they can do that I will have to pay the 600-900 dollars for the repairs. Not knowing how fast or slow you are going only guestamating is very dangerous for myself along with everyone else I share the road with.

55 Instrument Panel problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 09/22/2008

A couple of months ago I received a letter from gm informing me of a potential defect on the speedometer of any 04 chevy Suburban, but it stated that I should not take the vehicle to the dealership unless there is a problem. Yesterday 9-22-08 coming back from my son ball game the speedometer was stuck on 70 and when my husband applied the brake instead of decreasing the speedometer was going toward the 120 mark and we were almost at a complete stop. Now gm did send information that there might be problems but don't do anything unless you suspect problems. Anyway I have 78,000 miles on this vehicle and gm sent a letter that they will fix it no charge if it is under 70,000. Its a defect there shouldn't be a time limit to get it replaced a defective speedometer. It is extremely dangerous especially when children are in the vehicle. Why should anyone pay for an item that is defective. It should be replaced at no charge. I have heard of other people with the same problem as I have had. Something needs to be done such as a recall instead of a possible defect letter. Please help!.

56 Instrument Panel problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Suburban

59 Instrument Panel problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 06/15/2008

2004 Chevrolet surburban. The speedometer needle sticks. At first it only happened occasionally. A month later it is sticking at 0 miles per hour most of the time. Many complaints to gm. They finally issued special policy but will not fix my vehicle because the odometer reads 79,216. This is a known defect on many gm models year 2003-2004. The dealership will not even discuss the issue. This is safety issue that gm should take care no matter the mileage of the vehicle. This vehicle is only four years old. The repair will cost between $800 - $1000 or more.

60 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 06/13/2008

2005 Chevrolet Suburban 48,500 miles speedometer quit working from what I have read online this is a problem with many 2005 chevy vehicles.

61 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 06/02/2008

I have a 2005 chevy Suburban. At a little over 49,000 miles my speedometer needle began to report inaccurate readings while the truck was in motion. After a couple of days the needle fell all the way to the right of the panel and wouldn't move. After getting quote from the dealership to replace new and checking with some area junk yards I learned there were possible recalls on other chevy trucks and SUV's. Once I check on the internet and found numerous people experiencing the same problem. On tonight I called and learned that the 2004 Suburban has a recall but not the 2005 so I opened a case with cheverolet consumer assistance to see about getting my truck fixed as I can't afford $500 to fix a mechanical defect which should be covered Chevrolet expense and not the consumer. I'm now driving around not knowing what speed I'm driving and risking getting a speeding ticket which is another expense. I'm a single mother with 2 kids and this is my only means of transportation.

62 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 06/01/2008

I have a complaint about there not being a recall on my 2005 chevy Suburban on the instrument panel and electrical components. Sometime earlier this year my speedometer started jumping to higher speeds as I was driving and then got to the point it was going all the way past 120mph. Sometimes it would reset to 0 after the vehicle was turned off. Most recently it has gone past 120 and will not return to the normal functions it should have. It is very dangerous not to know how fast you are going, however, like everyone else I cannot afford the $400-$600 to pay for something that is a manufactures defect obviously! with so many complaints listed exactly the same on this site, it has to be a manufactures defect. Besides the speedometer not working properly, all the instrument lights are starting to go out or not work. Such as the radio on/off switch no longer lights up. Some of the other radio lights do not light up. On the steering wheel, some of the controls do not light up. I cannot believe that I have received a letter letting me know others are also experiencing problems with their chevy vehicles and they have started a law suite. My vehicle is a 2005 model, but since I bought it in March 2005, so it must have been manufactured before Jan 2005. The letter says it covers up to 2004 models and may later include the 2005 models. As I see it mine is doing exactly the same as everyone else and nothing is being done. Could someone explain what happens next? and when will chevy be responsible for all these complaints?.

63 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 05/23/2008

The speedometer on my 2005 Chevrolet Suburban at 50k miles without warning started to indicate incorrect speeds. The speed readings initially were slower than my actual speed and later as the problem progressed much higher. The initial incorrect speeds were only noticed after friends following me questioned my high rate of speed. My wife drives my 4 children around in this vehicle.

64 Instrument Panel problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 05/17/2008

In researching online I've noticed this on many different chevy 2004 models. The tachometer, fuel gage, and speedometer are what I noticed problems with and what others have seen problems with though the speedometer is the most prevalently noticed item. The gauge motors are not stepping back down when rpms, speed, or fuel levels drop thus leading drivers to respond in potentially dangerous ways. In my own case I almost caused a pile up when I thought I had lost my senses and applied my brakes a little harder than I should have, almost lost control of the vehicle, and certainly agitated the drivers behind me when they almost hit my vehicle. I don't typically get this problem as I typically drive less than 10 miles a day. When I do have to drive more than 60 miles I tend to have this problem. The problem has also been reported to be more prevalent in cold conditions which fits with the explanation I have had that it is the housing of the gear motors breaking down and jamming the gauge gears in the instrument panel. A problem with the plastic used in the housing of the gear magnets; "the problem lies with the plastic material that holds the permanent magnet for the rotor of the stepper motor. " now that I am aware of the problem and have asked around about fixes I have to stop the vehicle completely and turn it off. From there I have to turn the key enough to bring the instrument panel momentarily on and then back off. It steps the tachometer, speedometer, and fuel gauge back down, (bit by bit with each turn of the key) whichever is having the problem. This solution has been reported to stop working as the problem persists. The instrument panel needs to be replaced at a cost estimate of over $450 from a private shop and at over $800 from the chevy dealership. A gps for speed and a log book w/ calculator can get two of the three solved for me at a price of less than $200; it's just not safe to be writing log book entries while I'm driving.

65 Instrument Panel problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 04/12/2008

My speedometer displays incorrect mph, creating a driving hazard. I would like gm to fix this problem that so many others like me have had.

66 Instrument Panel problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 04/11/2008

2003 chevy Suburban speedometer has been experiencing issues since I purchased used over 2 years ago. But it outside of the manufacturers warranty period. So I decided to leave it until it stopped working all together. I was notified that from chevy that this an issue fall of 07, but by that time the vehicle had already surpassed the mileage restraint that gm put on the recall. Now the speedometer stopped working today. The speedometer is stuck at 70, and is not reading correctly. I called my dealer and they told me to call Chevrolet. After stating my case to the first representative I was told there was nothing we could do.

68 Instrument Panel problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 04/10/2008

I bought the Suburban new in 2003 and as I was driving it home off the lot, I looked down at the speedometer and it was showing "0. " I was, at the time, driving down the highway! I pulled off the side of the road and stopped, called the dealership and they said that if it did it again to call them. It did not do it again until today. I have been noticing, though, for a few weeks that the speedometer is clicky when it goes up in speed, it is not a smooth movement, it jumps or clicks up. Then, the other day, I was driving home and looked down and the speedometer was at "0" again. As I proceeded to drive and accelerate and slow down, it was giving erroneous readings. I called gm but there was no recall on this, but there has been recalls on it, "juse not on mine. ".
