Electrical System Problems of Chevrolet Suburban - part 1

My vehicle completely shuts off while driving. All of the components on the dash and even my steering wheel moves into the prestarted vehicle position. It has happened 3 times in the past week now. One particular instance, I was on the highway and thankfully it came back on immediately before completely stopping but shutting off while driving 65mph is so dangerous.

The engine light comes on and then the rpm's drop to 35 and a notification comes up that says "reduced acceleration. Driving with caution". If I stop and turn of the vehicle and restart the rpm's will be better but the truck still seems to have a difficult time increasing in rpm's and accelerating gears. It's incredibly dangerous as if I'm driving at a substantial speed on the highway or freeway and it drops rmp's rapidly I'm likely to be in an accident which could be detrimental. The dealer has had my vehicle on two separate occassions. The most recent time they've had it for 5 days and still do not know what's wrong with it. The engine light will not turn off.

After a major hvac repair involving the evaporator core (performed at a Chevrolet dealership), my vehicle began experiencing serious electrical issues. The second-row 12v outlet no longer functions, and the vehicle has gone completely dead three times while the engine was off due to the auto stop/start system — once while stationary on a major highway, creating a dangerous situation. Each time, the engine failed to restart automatically, and the entire electrical system became unresponsive.

Driving down to florida, no warning, no lights, never any issues except a belt replacement. I get oil changes, tire rotation every 3500 miles. Almost got killed doing 75 miles per hour, engine sputtered, totally shut down. Coasted onto an exit ramp thank god it was right there or we could of been killed. Tow truck towed to davis chevy gainsville, they called me on Monday said good news I have a warranty bad news total engine failure, will take 3-4 weeks to replace. Now I am trying to find a gm rental large enough to get me and my family back to TN since gm said they will only pay for a gm rental car. Scary, could of gotten killed. No notice from gm about any possibe problems. . . . We almost got killed and crashed along with the other drivers on the road. Thank god it was a Sunday and 6 am so not much traffic or it would of been worst.

I have had my cruise control set and my car will slam on the brakes with no vehicles in front of my car or on each side. This has happened multiple times, it doesn’t matter if I am going 40mph or 60+mph. I have taken it in and they say there is nothing they can do for the issue. I’m worried for the safety of myself, my family, and my unborn child. As well as any cars around (behind me potentially) when this happens. I do not want to unintentionally cause an accident.

There is an electrical problem with driver side door harness which causes my car not to start causing me to have to keep replacing the fuel pump from malfunction of ground wires leading to the fuel pump and ecu from what I am told.

Main display, driver display, and hud froze while driving. Speedometer froze as well. Main display goes back while the driver display freezes. No blinkers worked. This happened 3x throughout the day. Only way to reset is unhooking the battery.

Onstar module factory defaults/malfunctioning - power button don’t turn on so there’s no internet connection. This effect all the safety features in the car. Please recall. There has been numerous incidents reported online to this particular default.

Sat may 3rd we went for tire change from that date since that day, every time we try to start the car there’s always a different warning light the warning light is never the same issue. On may 15 when we received a warning light about transmission we went to the dealership that day they said they were about two weeks backed up but flushed the transmission and paid $504 for the service. Since that day we also received numerous warning light which include. Driver window. Esc. Winshield fluid. Tire pressure. Lift gate open. Forward collision system unavailable. Your 2021 Chevrolet Suburban detects a battery, starter or connection issue. Lastly the check engine light came on and the car won’t start.

I am contacting you regarding a critical engine failure in my 2021 Chevrolet Suburban lt, which is equipped with the l84 5. 3l v8 engine. Due to a valve lifter malfunction, the engine suffered catastrophic failure, with metal shavings found throughout the oil system and internal components. I’ve been quoted approximately $14,000 by the dealership/service center to replace the engine, and the vehicle is currently awaiting repair. I was driving the car with my son when the vehicle began to shake, make ticking noises, and the check engine light went on. I pulled off the road and several error codes popped up including "service esc" and "service traction control. " this is the second time that a lifter valve has failed on this vehicle. In 2022, the lifter valves on the left side were replaced under warranty. It appears one of the left side lifter valves failed again, this time causing significant cam shaft damage and damaging the engine. Given that this issue appears to be affecting many owners with similar engine configurations, I would appreciate your assistance in investigating this matter to see if these issues stem from possible manufacturing defects which could result in engine damage or failure. I reached out to general motors to ask if I qualify for extended coverage or any known service programs to address this situation and they told me I should talk to the dealership because they are unwilling to offer assistance. I've attached receipts for repair of the lifter valve in 2022 and the current diagnosis of engine failure, cam shaft damage, and lifter valve failure. This vehicle is only four years old and was regularly serviced by general motors. It is available for further inspection. Please let me know what other documentation or information you require. Loss of steering, jerks the week right out of your hand and then you are unable to turn the wheel. Engine stalls and you have to try to coast to the side of the road, put in park and try to restart the vehicle. Service stabilitrak warning appears on display, alarm sounds, radio beeps and display goes blank, navigation compass does not work. There is a current technical service bulletin for these issues: #18-na-161, document id 5075841 that lists the years from 2014 to 2020. There were product safety recalls issued: 17276 loss of steering assist, reference number:n172085440 for vehicles listed in this TSB for 2014 and 2015 but no recalls for later vehicles with the same problems.

My vehicle suddenly stalled while driving. I later replaced the battery and discovered the telecom module was damaged, making the onstar system inoperable. Gm disagreed with my warranty claim and required me to replace the module at my own expense. I discovered the same issue is common in various gm models from 2023-2025. My Suburban and yukon both have the same issue, making them defective. However, gm will not provide a free replacement under warranty.

The contact owns a 2021 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, the infotainment center malfunctioned and displayed a black screen. The contact stated that the back-up camera was inoperable. The contact stated that due to the failure, the vehicle was unable to receive over the air updates from the manufacturer that were safety related. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The local dealer and manufacturer were notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was 88,000.

1/10/25 complete braking system failure, could no brake, could not use emergency brake. Almost crashed into my garage -chevy service dept. Replaced electronic braking control module 1/24/25 complete braking system failure, could no brake, could not use emergency brake -chevy service dept. Replaced battery 2/1/25 car shaking terribly, my kids screaming we were going to “explode” , car smoking, white smoke coming from exhaust -chevy service dept. States there is an engine issue, they will need to break down and replace parts / repair.

Issue: the vehicle intermittently displays a “key not found” or “no key detected” message on the dash and refuses to start, despite both original factory-issued key fobs being present and having fresh batteries. The issue began in summer 2023 and has progressively worsened. The vehicle has stranded our family multiple times, sometimes requiring a tow, family impact, missed obligations. Luckily for all urgent needs like trips to the er or urgent care, we were able to use our other vehicle, but we no longer have that vehicle and it is important that our sole vehicle be a reliable one. Impact: •two emergency room visits and multiple urgent pediatric appointments affected •forced to rely on one family vehicle for months •paid for tow and fob batteries •multiple instances of no rental coverage •gm and dealers often declined documentation or action due to the issue being “intermittent” ? request: we believe there is a systemic defect in the Suburban’s keyless entry/ignition system (likely receiver or antenna module). We request that NHTSA investigate and that gm be required to issue a recall or permanent repair for affected models. This issue poses a safety concern and has created financial and logistical hardship for our family.

Engine replacement at 120,000 miles. I was told by mechanic that the 2020 Suburban's have a problem with the fuel injector wiring harness dry rotting and the sensor changing the engine from v8 to v6 when on highway going bad causing misfire in engine and ruining the engine.

Incident report vehicle information: year: 2016 make: Chevrolet model: Suburban I am experiencing a recurring issue with my 2016 Chevrolet Suburban involving the steering column lock module and the theft deterrent system. The truck intermittently fails to start, displaying a "theft deterrent" warning message on the dashboard and lighting get dim on the display. On some occasions, after waiting approximately 10 minutes, the vehicle starts, but other times it does not. Additionally, there are instances when the truck starts but cannot be shifted into gear. To address the problem, I have attempted to disconnect and reconnect the battery to reset the system, but this has not resolved the issue. The problem appears randomly and unpredictably, creating significant inconvenience and safety concerns, particularly in situations where I am stranded or unable to move the vehicle. Impact on safety: this issue poses a risk to my safety and the safety of others. The inability to reliably start or move the vehicle could lead to dangerous situations, especially in emergencies or high-traffic areas. It is also concerning that the theft deterrent system may be malfunctioning, potentially leaving the vehicle vulnerable to unauthorized access. Resolution attempts: despite attempting to reset the system by disconnecting the battery, the issue persists. Online forums and anecdotal evidence suggest that this may be a common problem with the steering column lock module or related systems in this model. Request for action: I urge the NHTSA to investigate this issue as it appears to affect multiple owners of similar vehicles. A thorough review and possible recall or service bulletin could ensure the safety and reliability of affected vehicles.

First, side detection system warning light would come on, then all dashboard gauges would fail and go to position as if the car war turned off, doors and windows would not unlock or open, series of warning messages would pop up as if all systems were malfunctioning. Car would still drive but if you turn the engine off all electrical systems would stay on for a extended period of time. Vehicle would not start, even with a jump start. After sitting for 12 hours, would start again and repeat shutdown after running for about 3-5 minutes.

Vehicle first start sometimes when pushing the start stop button. Dash illuminates but then goes black as if no power. P129d code appears after being able to start.

I was driving our 2021 chevy Suburban, which had ~107,000 miles on it, at approximately 75 miles per hour. With no other indication, the low oil pressure light came on, then within two seconds I lost all power (motor shut off) and lost electronics in the car. I had to man-handle the vehicle to get it off the road without power or dash controls. Our family was stranded near the California/nevada border with no cell reception in the middle of the night for over seven hours. I spent a fortune having the vehicle towed to a chevy dealership (wild west Chevrolet in yerington, nv) where they indicated that there was a main bearing failure which caused the engine to seize. A full l87 motor replacement is required. The motor is currently on backorder with gm due to the high number of l87 engine failures. Gm has not provided an estimated date of when they plan to have the motor replaced.

While driving approximately 70 miles an hour and trying to switch lanes, we got a stabilitrack warning and the car shut off for a second and then came back on. The weather was nice and there was no snow or any other adverse conditions. This happened a couple more times on the ride and then when we tried to turn into a parking spot it shut off completely and we had to restart it. We turned stabilitrack off and the car was ok for a couple of short drives. Then driving late at late and we passed another car the same thing happened. Then when we tried to turn our brights on we got the same message. Then we got a brake assist message and then we got a collision alert. The headlights were flickering the rest of the drive and we couldnt use our brights. We had our 4 children in the car and it was shutting down at high speeds and very scary. I looked up our VIN and it said that the recalls had been worked on but I dont remember this being done. This has never happended before this. Our car would be available for inspection if needed.

The check engine light came on at 14k miles indicating there was an emissions error. The brakes squeal and have had to be replaced 3 times since the original purchase in March of 2024. After the third replacement of brakes they still squeal. Even if the car is not braking it makes the noise. The radio shuts on and off constantly. Chevy reported they are aware of the issue but there is no fix at this time. The dealerships reset the radio but the issue persists. I’ve had to park the car because I’m afraid the brake issue is much more than they’re willing to admit.

Had the transmission replaced after 100,000 miles. Not even a year later the whole engine blew. With zero warnings lights or signs the engine gave 5 gallons of gas was in the engine along with other issues. We replace the engine and everything starts falling apart. Another $1,400 later it’s still throwing codes which come to find out the computer is now bad. Less the 300 miles have been put on the engine since it was replaced. Constant cam shaft sensors are going off causing the car to not run. $10,000 was put into it to have a running car and huge mechanical issues continue to happen with maybe 150,000 miles. Maintenance was done regularly. Zero issues prior to the transmission which thankfully was covered under warranty.

When turning the car left, the power to the engine dies. This also happens on many instances that the power has died to the engine mid drive on the road and hwy. Suddenly the forward collision note appears on the dash and other warnings appear after and then the power dies to the engine. Must stop and restart the engine for it to reset. Yes, it is available for inspection. While driving at high speeds the forward collision appears, and the car can suddenly die mid drive. Even at highway speeds. No, they claim that they cannot reproduce the issue. It has been taken to the dealer at least 5 times it appeared after seat heat function went out and was worked on.

I purchased this car at carzone in riverside this April 2024. I drove home with my kids in the dark and people kept honking. The lights and turn signals did not work. I took the car back in. The back up camera was broken, the safety system is broken, brakes are bad, they put two bald and all four tires with gummy plugs after I brought it back a fourth time. The tires were not fixed. I found out driving on the highway with my daughter. My tires popped. I had to pay for all four to be replaced and the dealership will not take any of my calls. I then had a check oil light. I took the car in. Pep boys discovered they had replaced the oil hose with a different one. It backed up into the engine. I paid for an oil change and was told to keep an eye on it and contact the dealership. They would not respond. I went back to pep boys be my car was completely out of oil one week later and my headlights kept dying and the car wont excellerate. They did another diagnostic and contacted the dealership and warrenty saying it needs a new engine entirely. They sent an adjuster who said nothing was wrong and closed it. I have had to take the car back since. The lifegate is zip tied to the tail pipe. I am terrified to drive this car, espcially the head light and brakes. I bought new tires bc the delaership would not help even though I have all the text messages they sent about the issues. It no longer accelerates the way it should and I have to put three quarts of oil minimum per week to keep it runnung at all. I am out so much money that I do not have and I cant drive an unsafe car with my babies in it. Upon further investigation I have found this dealership has done this to many people. I just need help getting them to take this car back or pay to fix it and to make sure they are following safety laws. I feel responsible to report this because I know I wish someone else had and it would be absolutely devestating if someone got injured in a vehicle sold by them.

While traveling back from labor day weekend on September 1, 2024, I was driving in the dallas fort worth area when I experienced loss of power to our vehicle on a major highway (ne820 and blue mound rd) and directly on a bridge with my entire family in the vehicle (4 kids and all of our luggage). It was a very dangerous and scary situation. We had to wait one hour for a tow truck to come and take my vehicle to the closest gm dealership. I was left stranded, 3 hours from my home with my four children and luggage. The Chevrolet dealership contacted me 9 days later and informed me the technician looked at the vehicle and determined the engine was locked up/seized. It would take 9 months to get the vehicle back into the shop to determine what caused the issue and then take 6-12 months for a new engine. I have a family of 6 and I'm left car-less for two years. Yet I still have to make the monthly payment on a vehicle that I won't be driving or be in possession of. My biggest issue: gm has known that they have had engine issues for many years. Particularly, with dynamic fuel management causing lifter issues which leads to engine failure, yet never disclosed this to me when I purchased the vehicle. Furthermore, they never disclosed that the issue was so prevalent that motors were back ordered for over a year. Consumers are being misled into spending their hard earned money on vehicles that have major mechanical design flaws known to the manufacturer. Once the mechanical flaw is realized, the vehicle can't be repaired for up to two years. Hiding this data from consumers should be criminal. Furthermore, general motors to this point has been no help, with the gm customer satisfaction team telling us they can't do anything until a dealer diagnosis the issue, and the dealer stating they can't diagnose the issue until may of next year, at which time they would then look to order the motor which will take 9-12 months to deliver and install.

The windows would go down all by themselves and not roll up . The infotainment system will flash on and off telling you to start strip all by itself. The door locks will lock you out and in not letting unlock the truck . The key fob is the only way to unlock it. I have taken it to the dealer five times to be repaired and they say gm software is not capable of finding the electrical problem. They just keep replacing parts. I filed a complaint with the state ag office and gm said they were not going to address the complaint because the vehicle was still under warranty.

While driving on vacation our car just slowed down gave the message, “reduced acceleration, drive with care” and then shut off while on the high way. We were able to start it again but after that haven’t had that message but have had the message to service safety restraint system multiple times. I have taken my SUV to the dealership multiple times for both issues and they have said multiple codes generate but they can’t find anything to fix.

The 2022 Suburban lost all power and came to a dead stop in the travel lane of a busy major highway. The vehicle becoming disabled in the middle of flowing travel resulted in a rear end crash from a vehicle traveling approximately 60 mph.

My Suburban 2007 drains battery overnight, tried different alternator and batteries but continuously drains battery’s.

Seat, mirror, steering column pre-set driver adjustments do not come into proper driving configuration on a regular basis when starting vehicle. This is a dangerous situation when a malfunction does occur. Seat has tendency to squeeze driver torso into steering column and knees into dash. Lh mirror inadvertently and unexpectedly tilts down toward the ground and ofter unnoticed. This makes for a dangerous condition where the driver assumes that there is no oncoming rear traffic and it's safe to pull away from a curb from a stopped position. This condition has occurred for over a year and while the vehicle was covered under factory warranty. Numerous trips to bonner Chevrolet in kingston service department for remedy have yielded nothing. Bonner Chevrolet walked away from this serious issue and told us there's nothing more they can do and said, sorry. In contact with Chevrolet through chat messaging, the recommend other surrounding dealers. None are interested at this point. The chat messaging is as useless as bonner Chevrolet. Meanwhile I'm driving and paying for a useless and dangerous vehicle which no one knows how to repair. This has been an ongoing event since June, 2023.

Sitting in my truck and everything just stopped working. Starter was still going even with the key out of the ignition and there was a burn smelling come from under the engine and the truck wouldn't starter. Had to get it tow from my job. Till this day my truck is still down. Engine be replace and the dealership still don't know why it still wouldn't starter. Also before the electrical problem. Me and my family was come down the highway from a vacation and the engine when I lost acceleration to the engine. The speed limit was 65 I can only do 25 because the engine lost acceleration. I only had the truck for three months. People told me that there was recalls on engine problem with the Chevrolet Suburban and tahoe. I looked it up and it is for 2019 and up. So know I have to pay 3800 to replace everything. I cant afford to replace anything I cant afford I use vehicle. The dealership that I got the vehicle from is closed down because they was lemons to people know everyone is stuck with a vehicle that they still have to pay the bank. And can't drive there vehicle. It's not right they have recalls on vehicles that are 2019 and up. I'm just looking for help. Because to be honest me and my family wouldn't be here because of the engine and electrical problem. Had to replace motor. Had to replace the vibrater in the seat. Had to replace transmission. Electric shorted.

A warning message appeared on my 2021 chevy Suburban dashboard that says "service safety restraint system". This impacts the airbag control module under the driver seat. After doing some research on my own this is a TSB pit5759 but it is not covered under a recall, as per my local dealership. I took the vehicle to the chevy dealership where purchased and was told this is not a recall or warranty part. This is very disappointing as it impacts the airbag controls which in an accident could cause severe injury or death.
