I have a 2006 chevy Suburban z71 with just over 95,500 miles. The rear hatchback/liftgate locking mechanism appears to have failed. The vehicle was not in an accident, and no other event ocurred. The lock simply quit working. Neither the door nor the glass will unlock. There is no manual way to unlock or open the rear door when the power locks are not working. There is not an emergency release to pop the rear door or glass in case of emergency. All other doors on the vehicle are still functional manually and electronically. No fuses have failed. I have not been notified of a recall and have not followed up with the dealership or a mechanic yet. In 2006/2007 we also experienced an odd electrical problem that the dealership could not reproduce. The vehicle would have an obvious electrical odor/burning smell and various lighting failures after being in heavy snow on three separate occassions. The problem was logged but never occurred again.

Lift gate glass hinges broke; catastrophic failure would have occurred if I had not noticed a gap in the back as I was pulling out of parking lot.
The contact owns a 2002 Chevrolet Suburban 1500. While the vehicle was parked in the driveway, the liftgate glass separated from the hinge. The contact stated that no wind was blowing at the time. The dealer stated that they would need to replace the entire liftgate with a different design. The purchase date was unknown. The current and failure mileages were 68,000.

The plastic hinge on the left side of the rear window glass on the Suburban tailgate has separated where it was originally joined and the window is no longer attached to the vehicle on this side. In talking to one of the local dealership repair shops and a local auto glass company, I was told by both that this was a fairly common problem with Suburbans. I think this is a potential safety issue as wind shear under the glass could rip the glass off my vehicle and create a problem for anyone behind me. Given what I was told by the repair shops, has an investigation of this problem been considered or conducted and is there consideration of a recall for this defect?.
The contact owns a 2003 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact attempted to close the window on the hatchback, but it would not close. The contact noticed that the hinge on the passenger side was detached from the vehicle and the rear window was hanging from the hinge. The dealer stated that they would perform a diagnostic test for $99 to determine the cause of failure. The current and failure mileages were 149,830.
My wife was driving our 2000 Suburban on the interstate when she heard a loud sound which sounded like something hit the vehicle. Upon investigation, we saw that the top of the rear window had an indenting like something had hit it and damaged the rear glass. So we filed a complaint with state farm and took it to a body shop. The body shop looked at it and said that the damage was caused by the right hinge breaking which holds the rear glass to the body. The hinge just broke on its own. After further investigation, I have found other people who have had a similar experience. It will cost about $1000 to repair this as there is no formal recall at this point in time.

2003 chevy Suburban 1500 (52,000 miles) with rear hatch. Recently one of the sides of the wind rear hatch snapped in half. This is a plastic piece bolted on to the vehicle structure. When I called a local Chevrolet dealer to inquire if there may be a recall the answer was no, but they see the problem often. Often tells me this is an engineering problem and should be fixed and not at the consumers expense. It is dangerous and may cause personal injury.
Contact states this past Wednesday while his wife was shopping, she opened up the glass portion of the liftgate. Then she almost shut it, and then she reached under to get a hold of the liftgate handle and raised the entire liftgate above her head . When she raised this the entire windshield broke and shattered on her head. . He has talked to the dealer about this, and they said that these things sometimes happen. He stateed that this was not acceptable to him.

I own a 2004 Chevrolet Suburban. The right hinge for the liftgate window has cracked and there is a possibility that when driving, the window could fall off if wind gets within the window and the hinges. Gm is ignoring any complaints on this even though they are all over the internet.
