Chevrolet Suburban owners have reported 7 problems related to tailgate (under the structure category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Tailgate problem of the 2016 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 03/15/2020

The power tailgate comes down with such energized force that myself as a 5'10" adult athlete cannot stop it. Just yesterday it almost decapitated my 10-year old daughter, bruised her head and strained her neck about one year ago I took the Suburban in to my dealer, hendricks Chevrolet and they said there was nothing they could do about it. After yesterday's incident, I scheduled a service call to being it back on tomorrow, March 17th and told them if they did not fix it, we would what other owners are facing the same dangerous problem to force them to fix it, hence why we are contacting you. The vehicle is parked, in stationary position.

2 Tailgate problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 04/10/2017

I have 2012 chevy Suburban 1500 lt. The rear tailgate unlock and lock intermittently causing the manual liftgate to stay ajar or stay lock. There is no manual release or key access. It only unlocks and lock by keyfob. On one occasion, the liftgate opened without noticed while driving prompting the car alert. It was then closed and the liftgate stayed in the lock position (unable to unlock with keyfob) after diagnosis at a local GMC dealer, it was determined that the rear liftgate lock actuator failed. The repair was in excess of $400. 00.

3 Tailgate problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 02/01/2013

The rear window lift hinge attached to the glass to the tailgate is defective. After researching this hinge online, I located several with the same problem. This could cause several problems if the glass were to separate during travel and should be a huge safety concern for Chevrolet. The estimated repair cost is $1,300. 00 for a defective part that will just re-occur with in a few years as some of the complainants observed online by new owners of 2 years. This part is defective and not due to normal wear and tare.

4 Tailgate problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 12/01/2011

2011 Chevrolet Suburban 1500. Consumer states when the tailgate is commanded to lift it raises between 20% and 50% and then returns to the bottom and locks without stopping the consumer stated when he arrived at the dealer, the tailgate lifted approximately 80% and then without warning an explosive noise occurred and a violent downward motion caused it to close and lock. The consumer went to another dealer and the tailgate opened fully and then closed and locked without command. The consumer stated he has been to the dealer six times for the faulty operation of the tailgate.

5 Tailgate problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 07/16/2007

I noticed a sound like that from an open window and check all driver and passenger windows verifying that they were closed. Upon utilization of the rear hatch, it was noted that one of the two (50%) latches that hold the rear window/door to the car had separated. I brought it to Chevrolet dealer at the time and was told there was nothing they could do. They did not consider the doors as required or this to be a safety issue. At the time, I found 1000's of people online complaining about the same issue. I'm sure that this has increased 10 fold since then. I only use this car as a 2nd car now and do not utilize it daily. I fear that the 2nd rear window/door latch will also fail and cause the entire window/door to separate from the vehicle thus landing on the highway behind me (hopefully) or on the poor family in the vehicle behind me (worse case). Unfortunately, I live in the washington DC area where people like to tailgate. Traveling on highways with the wind rushing through the window causing additional stress on the latch make the later scenario more deadly and more of a reality. Gm/Chevrolet should fix what seems to me as a minor repair to ensure the safety of the general public why hasn't this been addressed if so many people are having issues with the latch?.

7 Tailgate problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Suburban

Lock on tailgate has failed 4 times. Neither upper glass or lower metal tailgate can be opened. This is a safety hazard because it eliminates one point of egress in case of accident. This would be the fastest way out for 3rd seat passengers.
