Abs system engages and creates dangerous brake sponginess. I have a difficult time stopping this vehicle. I have taken it to numerous dealers who attribute the problem to the existing recall on similar gm light trucks and SUV's related to oxidation/corrosion of the brake system. I would like this fixed.

I have a 2002 chevy Tahoe and because I live in CA, I am not covered under the hub bearing recall. I hear noises when I break and sometimes my car jerks forward when I'm stopping. I have had no accidents yet but I'm upset that I have to pay for a problem that is an apparent issue.

My 1998 chevy Tahoe has an abs event when coming to a stop at approximately 6 miles per hour. This just started happening at around 60k miles. It has gotten progressively worse as the miles accumulated. Currently I have 80k on my SUV. This increases my stopping distance an worries me about how much control I have if I need to stop quickly. I have not done anything yet to fix the problem. I just started researching this and found that there is a limited recall already happening on gm suvs and trucks from 1999 - 2002. I am scared to take it to the dealer due to the costs. Everytime I come to a stop, the abs kicks on.

Gm recall for hub bearing areas and abs activation. I went to the chevy dealer in florida bob taylor and service advised us the repairs were not necessary in florida. They did not inquire where the vehicle was located etc. We had to insist the recall repair be done. They did not even want to inspect. With our insistence it was done. How many vehicles have been turned away without inspection by this dealer. It is not up to the driver to decide on a recalls necessity. We complied but with dealer indifference. I am concerned about other individuals who would not have the legal background to insist. They will be told they did not comply when they did. No record would be kept of the dealer discouraging the service and the defense if this is linked to an accident is that they did not get the repair/inspection. This may not be the spot to notice but I am concerned to have this occur.
I was in an accident today. The reason for the accident is that my anti-lock brakes engaged at less than 15 mph therefore not allowing me to stop in time. The brake actually felt as if they were not working at all. I was informed that newer models were included in a recall in the salt belt, but not in mn. What can we do to fix the problem? it happened in mn and in a 1999 Tahoe. Thanks, joan godfrey.
Dear NHTSA: I am a senior mechanical engineer and owner of a 1997 chevy Tahoe 4wd vehicle. I have owned the vehicle since mid-2001. A few months ago I started to notice that periodically, the brakes would not work properly when pulling to a stop. I can hear and feel the abs system pulsing the brakes rapidly, but it provides extremely poor stopping ability. I have had several close calls with cars in front of me, not to mention pedestrians in crosswalks. This is not correct. I am a former engine designer and have worked for Ford motor company. I understand mechanical systems and can tell you this isn't good. . . Or safe. I noticed in the paper that there is a known issue regarding gm truck anti-lock brake systems. Additional internet research confirmed this. I am logging this complaint so that NHTSA is aware of my problem in the hopes that gm will fix the problem for me. I have not taken the vehicle in for repair yet, as I was researching to see what could be done about it. Is NHTSA aware of the best course of action? I live in madison, wisconsin. . . Land of a lot of salt and metal corrosion. Please let me know. Sincerely, tim higgins.

Abs activation at low speeds for past 9 months on a 1998 Chevrolet Tahoe recalls in my state applicable to 1999 & newer despite gm service bulletins of models of 1995 & up affected by problem. Paid dealer to clean abs since gm refused.
The recall that chevy has for the antilock brakes only goes back to 2000. Mine had the same issue and I had to replace the entire hub assembly on each side because it got so bad that they were activating all the time. I do not have the parts, but I got it repaired at a service garage and have the receipt.
Antilock brake activation at low speeds (< 5mph). Sounds same as recall 05v37900. Started out intermittent, now occurs 80% of time. Dangerous as it effects stopping distance as you approach to make a stop. Dealer will not address as recall is for 1999+, my Tahoe is 1998.
I heard of a recall on cnn, and investigated it further on your website, campaign id number 05v379000, dated 8/29/05. When I called Chevrolet to get this fixed on my vehicle, because I was having the same trouble with the antilock brakes, they informed me this recall did not include the state of utah. My antilock brakes activate quite often at low speeds and cause me to skid, which could very easily cause an accident, but has not yet to date. Where the recall is known, I don't understand how this could not include my vehicle when I am experiencing the exact same problems. I have experienced this literally hundreds of times in the last few years.
