36 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 06/16/2015

Driving vehicle on local street at approximately 15mph when I attempted to stop at stop sign. Brake pedal went totally to the floor and lost all brakes. Unable to stop I narrowly missed another vehicle which was already in the intersection. Car finally came to a stop against curb on other side of intersection. Upon inspection I found that both rear brake lines had completely blown underneath drivers door. They were completely rusted through causing them to fail. When I got home I did a simple google search of this issue and found quite a few stories devoted to this problem. I don't understand how there isn't a recall on this issue. Imagine if I was going faster than 15 mph if this event had occurred. I also have contacted gm about this problem through email.

37 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 05/28/2015

Wife was driving with son in car went to hit the brakes doing about 40 mph and brake pedal went to the floor. Luckily she had room to swerve out of the way of the stopped car while continuing to pump brakes coming to a stop in the middle of a busy intersection. Thank god no harm was done to her or my child. 2 brake lines has been ruptured on the driver side of vehicle and was spewing brake fluid everywhere. All of the lines connected to the abs pump were severely corroded and all have to be replaced.

38 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 05/20/2015

On may 20, 2015 our 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe experienced a hydraulic brake line explosion due to excessive corrosion almost causing an accident. There was no warning light indication. The warning light came on long after the fact when testing the brakes while the vehicle was stationary. The steel hydraulic brake line to the left rear wheel ruptured totally unexspectedly. This is a serious safety related problem. General motors is aware and only a technical service bulletin has been issued, no recall. The NHTSA must demand that gm recall these vehicles for replacement of all these inferior hydraulic brake lines before deaths and serious injuries occur. I am submitting this form to make it public knowledge that this is a serious problem that could cause death and serious property damage if not addressed on all the affected vehicles. I am truly grateful that my wife was not injured or killed.

39 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 04/28/2015

A brake line burst from abs module to rr brake and pedal went all the way to the floor. Lost half the fluid and fluid continued to drain when brake was applied to park the vehicle. Gm claim that the vehicle has a dual brake system apparently does not prevent complete brake failure. Wife was very upset as the pedal was completely at the floor. Luckily vehicle was not on thruway at 65 mph when failure occurred. The vehicle is in mint condition inside and out and washed frequently. Repair shop indicated that the brake lines were badly rusted. Gm should be obligated to notify owners of similar vehicles and truck of the danger of complete brake failure. Brake lines should not be made of mild steel that is subject to rusting through as this is life and death safety issue.

40 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 04/22/2015

My vehicle failed to start upon leaving the mall. After several trouble shooting procedures at my resident the next day, I found that the in tank fuel sending unit was not working. During the gently lowering of the fuel tank, the sending unit to filter fuel line that runs along the inside of the vehicle frame just crumbled into chunks of rust. After further inspection, I can not believe that gm actually installed fuel lines made out of plain unprotected steel tubing, especially on a vehicle that was sold and operated in a snow belt state. Also while I was replacing the fuel supply and return lines, I noticed that the brake line that feeds the rear brakes that also runs along the inside of the frame was in the same sad shape, during removal of this brake line, it also crumbled into chunks of rust, how these lines did not fail prior to this incident is beyond me. If it wasn't for being a skilled mechanic by trade, this would have cost a fortune in labor cost to repair. For a vehicle sold/operated in snow belt states, these lines should have been made out of stainless steel or some other non-ferrous alloy material.

41 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 04/19/2015

A car cut in front of me and I had to slam the brakes, when I did the pedal went straight to the floor. I was able to swerve into another lane and avoid the car in front of me but after pulling over I observed brake fluid gushing out out a rusted out brake line when the pedal was pushed. Very unsafe. I live in charleston south carolina and this type of corrosion on the brake lines is totally unsafe.

42 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 04/02/2015

Tried to stop and brakes failed due to rusted thru rear left steel brake line. Now have 2 others rusted thru. Car is at mechanic shop now mechanic is replacing all brake lines because he would not touch it other wise . Hesaid I can expect at least a $1200. 00 dollar bill or more.

43 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 04/02/2015

As I was pulling into the drive-thru at my local bank I pushed on my brake pedal to stop at the window & the pedal went completely to the floor. There was someone at the atm & I immediately pushed the emergency brake to stop before I ran over them. Took it to a local shop & they told me before they put it on the lift what was probably wrong with it. Rusted brake line(s). I said surely not on a 10 year old vehicle. They said OH yeah we see this all the time. It's a major problem for these vehicles. I have a lot older vehicles at home that doesn't have this problem. Sounds to me like inferior materials. Something should be done about this before someone loses their life to save a buck for the company.

45 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 02/04/2015

My daughter was driving our 2001 chevy Tahoe, that we have owned since new, in columbus ohio. She was doing 35 mph down a city street, when she went to stop, the brakes went to the floor. After running a few red lights and almost getting into 2 accidents, she slowed the vehicle down and into a parking space. I had it towed to jack maxton chevy and they said the brake lines were completely rusted away and gave me a quote of $5000. 00 to replace everything. I did not do the repair and am currently weighing my options.

46 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 01/06/2015

My wife was driving vehicle and tried to apply brakes and they went completely to the floor. She had no brakes and she coasted into a parking lot and put the transmission in park. Very lucky no accident because the brake lines rusted out under the vehicle an had no warning or lights to show problems.

47 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 12/23/2014

1) 12/23/2014 - sitting in pharmacy RX drive-thru with foot on brake. Without warning, brake pedal went to floor. Assessed problem and determined brake line feeding rear brakes burst from corrosion. Fixed brake line next day. 2) 1/27/2015 - ironically, sitting in fast-food drive-thru. Exact same as above occurred. Determined all 4 brake lines leading to the front of vehicle were split and corroded causing loss of fluid and full braking capability. I was fortunate (and lucky) that I was at a stand still each time this happened. Could have been catastrophic if I had been traveling at any speed. Especially with the size and weight of this vehicle.

48 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 12/13/2014

My 2003 chevy Tahoe, due to premature corrosion my brake lines failed suddenly causing complete break failure. Thankfully I wasn't traveling at high speed so I was able to stop the vehicle safely and luckily my child and fiancé werent in the vehicle. This could have been a very fatal accident if I was at high speeds. Let's get this taken care of and make sure people are safe.

49 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 12/10/2014

While braking hard for stopped vehicles on interstate highway my 2004 Tahoe brakes failed. It was later determined that my rear crossover brake line had rusted through.

50 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 12/03/2014

I backed out of my driveway and I started down the street. I got to the first stop sign in my neighborhood hood and when I pressed the brake I lost all pressure and my foot went to the floor. Upon further investigation, rite behind the driver side rear tire where the brake line is attached to a clip is where the line has a hole in it. The clip had worn a hole in it. The clip that holds it, has 2 peices that are bend down that hold it down, and that's where the hole was worn into my line.

51 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 11/15/2014

Came out of the my driveway and noticed I had to put my foot to the floor to stop the vehicle. I left a trail of brake fluid down the street. Was told by independent mechanic that the brake lines had rusted and completely deteriorated. This is an incredibly dangerous safety issue. I can't imagine what would have happened if I had been driving on the highway at 65 mph and had to stop with my family in the car. I expect to pay some $600 to replace the brake line which should certainly last for the life of the vehicle. This is a major safety issue and should warrant a recall/reimbursement for owners. I have to have this fixed, and can't wait for a recall -- the vehicle cannot be driven in anything approaching a safe manner.

52 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 11/15/2014

Brake line failure - was pulling out of parking lot and luckily there were no cars in area . Rolled down block until vehicle stopped.

53 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 11/14/2014

Steel brake lines are rusted. All of the under body lines show a lot of rust. Rear feed line from abs block ruptured at rear axle. I repaired that line, when I attempted to bleed the system the rear feed line and the in flow line popped leaks. Luckily I had enough braking to stop.

60 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 08/29/2014

I was towing my RV (travel trailer) to a campground for labor day weekend festivities utilizing the heavy duty tow package that gm installed on these vehicles. I arrived at the campground and was driving to my campsite when the brake pedal went to the floor followed by a loud chiming and a warning light. I was going down a hill and the 2 ton travel trailer was pushing my Tahoe as I tried to stop. I barely had any front brakes and no back brakes at all. I had to use the emergency brakes and use the gear selector on low to try to stop, which it finally did after much effort. It was labor day weekend so there were lots of people camping. There was a crowd of kids riding their bikes on the camp road in the drive path of my Tahoe however the kids moved out of the way only when I screamed out of my window that I could not stop my truck. This incident could have caused death or major injury. Luckily it did not otherwise I would not be able to live with myself. I now have my Tahoe at a local mechanic that I trust. He is stating that he has to replace all of the steel brake lines because they are all in bad shape and will eventually go. I am waiting to hear from him about how much this will cost me. I am a single father and do not have extra money to spend. My nerves are shot and that incident ruined our family camping weekend. I have nightmares that the kids on the bikes did not move and I ran them all over. I am definitely scarred for life.

61 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 08/26/2014

Brake lines roted out at abs system.

62 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 08/15/2014

Rusted brake lines failed. Lost brakes at highway speed.

63 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 08/11/2014

Rusted brake lines resulting in failure of braking system. Brake lines should last longer than the service life of the vehicle. Hence no brake lines should ever be made out of steel. Especially on on a system as critical as the braking system. This failure could have costed me my family. The the ethical thing for any company to do. Is rectify the problem. I really don't understand why this would be an issue. We are talking about the braking system on a vehicle that by itself weighs 5,000 pounds. Without a trailer or any payload attached to it. Many of people have not been as fortunate as myself. The vehicle is. Otherwise in excellent condition. To this day. If faulty ignition switches get recalled it's common sense to recall a brake issue. Especially since the brakes totally fail without any warning. I have been building cars since I was a kid. And this is a first. To see a brake line burst. Because of the corrosion. If gm doesn't want to recall these vehicles. The at least let the owners buy the parts and gm install them. And for gm to state that this a normal wear and tear issue. When was the last time anybody thought to check for rusted out brake lines when. They were changing the oil or doing a tune up . Or changing brake pads or tires. Those are normal wear and tear owner maintenance issues. My 2004 Ford f350 has 220 thousand miles. Runs great to but the brake lines aren't rotting out of the vehicle. What gm is claiming is a extremely weak argument. Thanks for your time.

64 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 08/11/2014

The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe. The contact stated that during an unrelated repair, it was advised that the brake line was entirely rusted and that the brake pad went to the floor. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 185,000.

65 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 08/09/2014

As I was backing out of my driveway I hit the brakes and the truck didn't stop causing me to hit my neighbors tree. . . The brake system failed with no warning or signal light or a sound. As I looked under the truck there was brake fluid all over the street. I called a buddy mechanic of mine and stated my brake lines are rusted out.

66 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 08/07/2014

I had to hit brakes hard to avoid a person that ran a stop sign. I drove off, down a hill and upon reaching the stop sign at the bottom of the hill, I applied the brakes and the pedal went to the floor. I had very limited braking and stopped 3/4 of the way into the intersection. Thank goodness there wasn't any cross traffic. I had the car towed to my local chevy dealer and was told that one of the metal lines had ruptured and that all the lines would have to be replaced. Dealer wants $2,800. 00 to replace these biodegradable brake lines. One would wonder why the muffler is still original and in good shape, but the brake lines corroded to the point of catastrophic failure. Dealer is not willing to assist in the cost due to the age of the vehicle. The investigation that is on-going needs to include more model years than what is being investigated. It may then shed light on how wide spread this problem really is. I am under the understanding that metal brake lines should last a lot longer then a muffler. Gm is taking the stance that the problem only occurs in "salt states". If I am not mistaken, don't they sell these vehicles in "salt states?" there needs to be a recall, before someone gets killed. This is serious.

67 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 08/06/2014

Rear brake line broke due to corrosion . My mechanic said . He replaced it with a non corrosive flexible line . Why didn't they use this to start with.

69 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 07/23/2014

It sat on the side of the driveway for about three months, then when I backed it out of the driveway, I lost all of my brakes. I ran into a tree with the rear bumper. There was just a small dent in the rear quarter panel. I had to have three brake lines replaced.

70 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 07/21/2014

The contact owns a 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe. The contact stated that while driving approximately 35 mph and attempting to stop, the brakes malfunctioned and caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle. The contact crashed into an embankment and several trees. The contact suffered from a left leg injury, multiple hip abrasions and contusions. A police report was filed at the scene. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the failure was caused by a ruptured brake line and the fact that there was no brake fluid in the vehicle. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 141,597.
