Cooling Fan Problems of Chevrolet Trailblazer - part 1

While highway driving with cruise control engaged I heard a loud whining sound and experienced a sudden loss of power. I was almost hit from behind several times before I could get the vehicle over into the right lane. When I took the vehicle to my mechanic I was told the cooling fan clutch assemble had failed. I have had this fan replaced three times now and am not at all pleased that this vehicle has not been recalled for this problem. I have read that this is a "common" problem on this vehicle that can cause a severe accident. I have receipts for the repairs but have no way to upload them.

2003 chevy Trailblazer. Consumer states problems with fan clutch the consumer stated once the rpm went up, the fan clutch would disengage and then sound normal. The fan clutch has been replaced twice.

Fan motor only works on 1-4 settings, after a few weeks no setting works. Inspecting fan blower found burnt wires leading to the resistor, external before harness. New resistor and harness are needed to remedy.

This will be the third replacement of a clutch/cooling fan to the cost of over 700. 00 not under warranty.

The contact owns a 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer. The contact stated that the fan clutch was failing and sounded like a plane taking off when pressure was applied to the accelerator pedal. She first noticed the failure in July of 2008. The vehicle was taken to a mechanic, who stated that this was a common complaint for this type of vehicle. The mechanic repaired the vehicle for $710. 68 at the contact's expense. The manufacturer stated that there were no recalls and could only make a note of the failures. The failure mileage was 78903 and current mileage is 94,000. Updated 09/18/09. The consumer stated even though the fan clutch was repaired, it continues to make sounds. Updated 09/21/09.

The contact owns a 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer. While driving at any speed, the contact heard a loud roaring sound coming from the engine. Afterwards, the rpm's will increase to 3 or 4 and remain there for a while before decreasing. A mechanic stated that the fan clutch needed to be replaced. The purchase date was unknown. The current mileage was 89,000 and failure mileage was 87,000.

For approx. 2 years there had been a constant ticking when my 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer was running. Questions about the noise was dismissed by the service technicians as normal. Finally on 3/22/08 my fan clutch failed causing an overheat problem and a constant loud noise, along with a service engine light. Upon investigating this issue I found literally thousands of complaints on the internet regarding the Chevrolet Trailblazer and its premature fan clutch failures. To correct the failure I had to incur the $724. 00 repair.

Just as many other 2002 chevy Trailblazer owners have found, one day there was a loud fan noise when accelerating, reduced gas mileage, and a lack of ability to accelerate that lasts for about a mile. After a few minutes of searching on the internet it is apparent that my problem is the fan clutch, TSB 060602003, NHTSA 10019510. It appears that thousands of owners are having the same problems and have been for years but there is still no recall. Although this problem is intermittent at this time it almost caused a serious accident the first time it happened. I was merging onto a highway and couldn't get the engine over 30 miles per hour. We were nearly rear-ended. I have copies of at least a thousand internet complaints with the first one posted around November 2001 --- just about the time we purchased the vehicle new. (if you don't know it already there are websites just for the purpose of complaining about the chevy Trailblazer!!!) I can't believe that gm would turn away from it's customers like this! I certainly doesn't make me want to purchase american made again!.

Loud roaring noise that sounds like a jet plane. Was intermittent, but now constantly. The noise is even louder when you accelerate. The fan is turning at an astronomical rate of speed and gas mileage now is only about 9 mpg. Right before this constant jet plane sound started, the battery blew up. Yes, blew up! and the truck would die if the a/c was turned on. The dealer told me it was the water pump and the pulley and belt also need to be replaced. I have no idea what a water pump has to do with any of this, but $711 later I still have the problem.

Bad clutch fan again!!!.

I have a 2006 Trailblazer and my cooling fan motor assembly went out for the 2nd time in 1 month.

Everytime my 2006 Trailblazer would be driven in the rain the check engine light would come on. The last time it would not go off so I took it in and they told me it was the cooling fan motor. While finding someone to work on it I discovered this is very common on this vehicle and it was 700. 00 to repair.

My truck has been driving average, with prior issues of the truck sounding like it is struggling to accelerate. This weekend, it began sounding like it is struggling to accelerate. Because of this, I had to drive below the speed limit for over 50 miles for fear of my truck blowing up. After taking my truck to the dealership, the problem is the fan clutch. After going online, I observed that there are thousands of people who have had the same issue with Trailblazers from 2002-2007. But to no avail, I cannot find any recalls from Chevrolet about their many faulty parts. I am supposed to pay $900 to repair something that should be recalled from chevy? where is the justice? I am a family member of 3 generations of gm employees, and I am truly disappointed in Chevrolet.

While under warranty was told by dealer that the noise was normal and that there were no problems. After warranty expired the fan clutch failed and was then told that the noise was not normal and that this SUV has a major problem with the fan clutch. Dealer stated that even though this is a part with a very high failure rate it is not a recall item.

I brought my 2003 Trailblazer in for service to my gm dealer while still under warranty for a ticking noise. The noise is intermittent and the periodic rate is constant regardless of engine speed rpm's. I now have 50k miles and the fan clutch motor failed and operated at 100%. Through research online, the ticking sound is directly related to the fan clutch failure many gm Trailblazer and envoy owners have experienced. The fan operates at 100% due to the fan clutch failing resulting in loss of power. I too have experienced what is described by many as the "lear jet" sound. The sudden loss of power at high speeds in my opinion is as safety concern and gm should recall this defective fan clutch motor. Customers with my 2002 and above have complained on several websites on this issue.

I got in the car to go to work the other day and as soon as I put the car in drive and stepped on the gas it made a loud fan noise that made the car sound like an airplane taking off. This was the first time the car had ever made that noise. I drove the car around that day before getting it to a mechanic. The mechanic said it was the fan clutch that needed to be replaced. I believe they said it was an electronic relay, which was why it cost $600 to replace. The SUV was a 2002 model and had 57,500 miles on it.

Have been having major trouble with the front end. Had it checked multiple times at the dealer and at a local mechanics shop and the ball joints and bushings had to be replaced. Even the the warranty was finished, the dealer did not charge me for this, but unfortunately I thought that this would take care of the noise on the front end, but it is still there!! also yesterday, April 24, 2007, I had to have the fan clutch replaced. This vehicle only has 35,000 miles. I have also had the service engine soon light come on and stay on several times and after reading other complaints, I should check out the gas tank for any cracks. This is my first and last gm product!!!! it spends more time being fixed then on the road. I have also had trouble with the rear tail light burning out, but that has since been fixed!.

I had the fan clutch replaced on my 02 Trailblazer at 75,000 miles. The clutch fan sticking, making a very loud roaring noise that the dealership calls normal. The fan had been doing this virtually since new purchase, but only occasionally and always went away quickly. Nothing I could demonstrate to the service department. Until it failed.

Ev cooling fan runs at a high rate of speed and does not disengage for serveral minutes while driving. The vehicle does not shift properly during this period of time. Since I am unable to get up to highway speeds, I feel I am a safety hazard to other drivers that must slow down until they can pass or I get up to proper highway speeds. I will be replacing this component at the dealer they gave me the following estimate: part cost $350 and labor cost $300. I will be asking for the old component. This problem began occuring without any warning. One morning it just began operating at a high rate when I started my vehicle and as stated, continued for serveral minutes.

2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer mechanical problems due to fan clutch defect. ***.

The engine fan clutch failed on my 2003 chevy Trailblazer the truck is only three years old with 65000 miles on it. I was told that gm has change this part several times to try to fix the problem I think there should be a recall on this part as the cost was about $630 dollars to have it repaired.

I own a 2002 chevy Trailblazer and recently experienced loud, roaring noise from engine coupled with reduced power and very poor gas mileage. Took the vehicle to a dealer and confirmed the fan clutch had failed. Dealer quote was $637. 50 to repair. I ultimately purchased the part online and had it installed by a local mechanic and saved myself around $260. Vehicle runs fine now. I cannot believe gm has not issued a recall for this issue. A simple internet search will return hundreds of posts related to the fan clutch failure. Very disappointing.

Fan clutch failed on vehicle that is only 3 years old. I have searched for info on this on the internet & have found page after page after page of other people having the exact same problem, all have had to pay $600-$1000 to fix the issue that seems to be very common on 2002-2004 Chevrolet Trailblazers. This needs to be a recall issue that Chevrolet fixes without charging its customers!!!.

Doors rattle and shift while driving down the road. The windows also rattle, particularly on the drivers side, front and back. Also, the air/heat blower is stuck on #4. It won't blow on any other settings.

I have a 2002 Trailblazer with about 50,200 miles and the other day it began to make a high pitched sound, almost like a plane landing. When I took it to the dealer, he said it's the fan clutch and it's going to cost $711 to fix. When I asked if this is normal wear & tear, I did not get a proper answer. The response was that this happens a lot on the chevy & gm vehicles. When I called chevy corporation, I was given a claim# & told that they will have to investigate this problem & then they will call me back in about 3 days to advise if they will help with the costs of the repair. Both the customer service reps I spoke with at Chevrolet corporation (800-222-1020) told me that they've personally never had such a complaint before and that this was new to them. But when I googled this problem for the chevy Trailblazer 2002, I got several web pages including NHTSA which documented this problem. This should definitely be a recall item. I am now waiting to see if Chevrolet will help and to what extent.

Clutch fan failed to release. Fan locked up without warning. Engine has less than 40,000 miles.

Engine kept making this very load roaring noise. Had to get the clutch fan replaced like many other Trailblazer owners. Gm needs to recall this part!.

2002 Chevrolet electronic clutch fan failure. Many of these electronic clutch fans are failing in our area. Imo, due to high heat causing o-ring seal failure and loss of silicon lubricant. Imo, part is not well enough built to withstand sw heat.

When I first bought my 2002 Trailblazer, the fan clutch would occasionally be fully engaged when I started the truck in the morning. It usually resumed normal function within a mile or so. As of yesterday, it will not disengage and the check engine light came on. It sounds like the labor to replace this clutch is very high. I'm not sure if I dare tackle this myself, but the thought of paying $700 to replace something that shouldn't fail at 47,000 miles is disgusting.

There is a loud roaring sound from under the hood. (sounds like a jet engine. ) vehicle dealer says that vehicle has a bad cooling fan clutch and that the related computer software needs reprogramming. This loud noise problem used to only happen when the vehicle was cold and would go away after about a half mile. Vehicle appears not to shift properly (automatic transmission) and the vehicle does not accelerate well while this loud sound is present. Sometimes now the problem occurs when the vehicle is warmed-up. The loud noise goes away after a short while.

My 2002 Trailblazer sounds like a jet engine when preparing to start out in the drive position at all times no matter when speed you start out in. The auto mechanic I took it to several times said it would cost hundreds to replace the clutch fan to see if this would fix the problem possibly more and it is using way too much gas now.
