Chevrolet Trailblazer owners have reported 33 problems related to engine cooling system (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
My ac system in my truck suddenly stop working in April 20111. I assumed that it was the ac compressor. I took my vehicle into a certified mechanic and was informed that the wiring to the resistor had burned. He took pictures of this damage and stated to me that he looked into this and was informed that this has been a major issue with gm trucks and a service alert has been sent to dealers about this.

Thermostat has failed twice during long trips. This causes the engine to run hot or cold. I am on my third one and have concluded it must be a design defect. Failure of this component may cause the engine to fail and thus strand the driver.

The air conditioning on my 2006 chevy Trailblazer ext stopped working. The problem was the blower motor resistor module and resistor module connector. The parts had melted together, causing the wires to become loose at the connection. Apparently this is a common problem with my chevy model. There are many online postings indicating that the problem could cause a fire. Chevrolet company refused to even look at my vehicle until I paid a $110. 00 diagnostic fee. The service technician immediately knew what the problem was and explained that it was a common problem with my model and the tahoe. The gas gauge also stopped working recently which I was told by the technician that it too was a common problem. There are numerous complaints on these parts as well as the brake light circuit boards, which also went out on my vehicle. The technician once again said that it was a common problem. These parts seem to be failing shortly after the warranty expires. There are many issues with the electrical system in this vehicle. The problems are hazardous safety issues and are known to the Chevrolet corporation. I was able to find the parts at nearly 80% cheaper than what the dealer wanted to charge me, not including the labor and diagnostic fee. Safety recalls on these parts should be issued.
Trailblazer was making roaring noise when first starting up and took about 2 minutes for it to run normal, voltage meter fluctuates as well as the lights dimming intermittently during this time. This started happening about 3 weeks ago. When first taking off after being stopped, engine accelerates unexpectedly. It jumps, and I have to hit the brakes. It has had this problem since I have owned it (since Jan '09). The last couple of days if the radio is left on, it does not automatically shut off like it is supposed to when you shut the door. The passenger side works. Just had clutch fan and water pump replaced and the mechanic says that it is a common problem with these vehicles. After having that done, it still makes a roaring noise for the first five to ten minutes of driving. Going to have another diagnostic on it to see what is wrong with it. The SUV is a 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer LS, 4wd, 6 cylinder motor and has about 88,000 miles on it.

The fan clutch on my 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer has failed for a second time. First failure at 81000 miles and failure of dealer installed replacement at 115000. The failure results in a loss of acceleration ability, the noise level is a considerable distraction to myself and other drivers, and the pending failure of the cooling system could lead to unsafe roadside conditions.
Antifreeze is leaking from rear heater core. Caused my engine to overheat. Fluid leaks at a fairly rapid rate. In doing research I found that they changed the heater core so this repair costs an extra $500 for parts to retrofit a new heater core. If there is a flaw in the design why isn't this a recall? it could cause engine damage. I called gm with no luck.
2003 Trailblazer transmission lines. Coolant lines rusted at the factory connection. Major fluid loss, had to repair immediately.
My heat gauge would show fast rising temp. Of the engine. The dealer did not believe me when I told them it must be the temp. Sending unit. They said they never go bad. . . . Called later to say it was the heat sensor, replaced it, tore the thermostat out of my trail blazer, said it was bad [I don't think so], replaced it and then said I needed to have my seven computers reprogrammed so the car would run right. [I didn't believe that either]. Since everything depends on computers to diagnose everything, I had to have them do whatever the dealer said. So, I feel that I was ripped off for unneeded parts and service. . . To the tune of $750. What a rip off ! ! ! !.
I have a 2005 Trailblazer ext purchased new in July 05. Recently while driving, the car had reduced engine power, the check engine light then came on then my car just shut off. It started back up after pulling off the road but had to endure this the entire time while driving home. When I took it in for diagnosis I was told the accelerator pedal sensor needed to be repaired after having that repaired I drove home and the same thing happened with the check engine light and the car shutting off while driving. When I took it back again they noticed an additional problem " the fuel level sensor wiring was chaffing on fuel pump ground terminal" or in layman's term the wire was sitting in fuel so they had to remove the fuel tank and reroute the wires. This sounds very dangerous and if this is happening please report it. There are TSB reports on the issue with the accelerator pedal but gm has not issued a recall on this. The question is why not? I have also had to have the output shaft seal on the transmission replaced last year and again this year. Not very happy with this vehicle. In my opinion these are vehicle defects not problems you should be having with the normal maintenance issues. Gm needs to issue recalls to have these issues resolved. Oh in addition to the other problems I also just had to have the thermostat replaced in early June.
2006 Trailblazer ext, 12/08 exiting freeway onto 50 mph roadway and accelerating from stop sign at top of ramp, when engine lost power and slowed to a stop, with engine running and check engine light on, all at once. Almost broadsided on drivers door by approaching traffic. . Onstar said in was a throttle valve body issue and had it towed to dealer for night drop off. Next morning no code found, but they cleaned the throttle body valve assembly and linkage. No charge for diagnostics or cleaning! 4/21/09, 3000 miles later, the check engine light comes on with vehicle operating normally. Onstar says get it to a dealer in one day, its the throttle valve body and linkage. $100 for diagnosis already sent to dealer by onstar. Dealer says the electronic radiator fan clutch is not engaging and engine runs cold, technician said no, it runs hot, neither of which was occurring. Dealer says they have a history code for throttle valve and linkage, so its obviously carboned up and though its not listed anywhere in owners manual for such service, they say its a maintaining issue, don't void your warranty. If you don't let us do it for $149, it's $52 for reading the history code. They remove the air cleaner duct and they try to sell me a bill of goods, I. E. Look at the carbon build up, which is nothing more than a very thin, thin coating of darkened oil vapor residue which is pulled in from the crank case vent hose attached below the intake horn, after he air filter and sensor. Rip off! the vehicle ran perfect but for the check engine light, never ran cool or over heated and was getting good mileage. I let them replace the $600 plus fan for the $100 diagnostic fee. To keep from voiding my warranty, I had to spend the $149 for an old history code, to prove that I maintained the vehicle per dealer recommendations. Rip off !!!.
Have owned a 2002 chevy Trailblazer for three years when I purchased it made a load fan noise but it went away after a few feet now it makes the sound all the time chevy needs to call them back before someone gets hurt or killed when the fan explodes it will happen the fan is plastic and can only take so much rpms chevy you should do this before you have a law suit.
The fan clutch on my 2002 Trailblazer have been acting up and not working properly for quite a while. From the initial startup of the vehicle , up to traveling speed of 55 mph the load jet noise, fan clutch revving can be heard. The revving up, jet noise, and lack of power from the engine and no acceleration when needed. Service engine light has come on several time p0495. Seems as though the problem has slowly got worse over the past year. Finally had to purchase a new fan clutch from automotive business and replace the part. A simple 5 minutes search of the problem on the internet showed a very eye opening response from several hundred other owners of similar Trailblazers with same exact problem. The fan clutch was replaced with a new one and the old fan clutch is still available if anyone needs to see it. The loud engine revving fan noise/like jet engine, used to happen every few days, but then it became a daily problem , hence the concern to replace the part. Bought the vehicle two years ago with 36000 miles on it and it has 56000 miles on it now. For your information of the other hundreds of owners with similar problem, here is the link. . Read more...
The cooling fan clutch in my 2002 chevy Trailblazer has gone bad. There have been many other reports about this part failing on these vehicles. Causes decreased power, increased rpm's, and may cause engine destruction.
Since I purchased my 2003 chevy Trailblazer in Jan 2004, I had it returned twice complaining of a ticking sound from the engine. Local dealer would not address the issue as the noise would come a go. . I issued a complaint to the dealer and they got upset but never volunterred to fix the noise. . Last month a loud noise came from my engine, like a vacuum sound. . I lost power and was forced to leave the truck at a gm dealership. . They fixed made repairs by replacing the clutch pump. Cots me 900. 00 for repairs. Now 3 weeks later I noticed that the ticking sound from the engine has disappeared. . . . If the chevy dealer only addressed this problem a few years ago when I originally complained , I may not had to dish out 900 for repairs. . Thank you chevy! and you wonder why your going out of business. ! good riddins!.
My "service engine soon" light came on today and I brought it in to be put on the diagnostic machine. It is reading error code po495 cooling fan circuit error. After researching online I found that it is generally a problem with a faulty fan clutch. And that this is a very common problem for my vehicle (2002 chevy Trailblazer). The site I visited had 279 pages of comments on this problem! statements made were that if the fan clutch malfunctions it can "explode" causing more damage.
I own a 2002 Trailblazer LS. The vehicle has acquired approximately 82,800 miles. On a least five separate occasions, while covered under factory warranty, the vehicle was taken to midway Chevrolet located at 5915 montana Ave. El paso, TX. , due to recalls and various other mechanical problems. On at least two occasions, the vehicle was taken to midway Chevrolet of el paso due to an unexplained high engine noise and a light engine warning light. On each occasion, I was told by the midway reps. That nothing was wrong with the vehicle. They simply reset an electronic component which turned off the engine light warning indicator and eliminated the high pitch noise. The vehicle worked fine for a short period, then the high engine noise returned, and so did the engine warning light. I simply grew tired of going to the dealership, therefore continued to run the vehicle with the high engine noise and the engine warning light. Today, I received news from said dealership that the high pitch engine noise and the engine warning light is, and has been, due to a cooling fan clutch assembly. This non-stop mechanical problem now keeps me from a texas state inspection sticker. To repair this problem, they tell me, will cost over seven hundred dollars. This should have been repaired while under warranty. They had several opportunities to remedy this problem. They failed to honor their responsibility. Now, I am unable to, legally, drive this vehicle anywhere in the state of texas. From recent information gathered, this problem is all to well known to chevy and GMC, yet they have done nothing to correct this problem. I wish to register a complaint against chevy and midway Chevrolet of el paso for their failure to repair the cooling fan assembly problems when they surfaced and while under factory warranty. Joseph e. Gaines.
Engine revs with no power, fan clutch stuck on . Started when vehicle was new. Progressively worse and had to be replaced at 50,000 miles. Six months later problem back.
At about 40,000 miles it started making a loud roaring noise at start up until you get about a mile down the road. I changed the plugs and air filter at 60,000 and the noise seemed to go away. It was soon replaced with a squeaking noise from the belt area. I took it in to have the belt replaced and $90 later that didn't fix the squeaking noise. After a little research on the web I found out about the fan clutch problem and the water pump bearings were going bad. So I replaced the fan clutch and the water pump myself for $300. The roar is not as bad now but still there, shifts abnormally, and now at 60 mph it jerks forward and rpms go from 1500 to 2000. I researched more on web and found that after changing the fan assembly you must get the pcm updated. I called the local dealer (maroone) and they want $104 to do that. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
When turning on my chevy Trailblazer. . Sounds like a jet airplane taking off. Had it replaced last year (2007) and it's starting to do the same thing. I was told that the original fan clutch had some sort of upgrade or was it just defective?.
I have a high revving sound when my vehicle is about to take off (it only happens on take off, first gear). Then it will go away after it shifts into second gear. I have taken it into the dealer ship to get looked at and they could not do anything because it was not happening at the time. I was fine with that. Two weeks later it starts doing it again and I take it in 2 days after it started doing it again. The day before I take it in the "service engine soon" light comes on. Keep in mind the noise has always happened before the light came on.
Trailblazer over heated about a year ago, ran diagnostics-changed the fan clutch assy, worked for two months. Over heated again- more diagnostics-warranty fan clutch, worked for a week- warranty fan clutch again and changed the coolant temp sensor- still over heating. Dealership wanted to change the fan clutch again- I refused because this is about to run me into the poor house.
I own a 2003 chevy Trailblazer lt @ 35,825 miles I reported my vehicle binds up on turns & of course the garage found nothing (drove it 20 miles for comparison @ the time). So now that I am up to 82,090 miles now I mention suspension issues still & of course they find both lower ball joints need replaced @ $320. 06 & left outer tie rod end broken @ $170. 80. Also they inform me I need to replace 3 of my 4 stabilizer bar links are loose & rattling @ an estimate of $320. 00 (haven't done yet) also, I have looked on a website called mycarstats. Com & found many others with these same issues with this vehicle @ much lower mileage & where tie rod issue caused an accident -- they weren't as lucky as me. Also people I work with who have this same yr & model vehicle have had to have ball joints, sway bars replaced, and other suspension work @ lower mileages. I also had an issue with my 4-wheel drive becoming inoperative & this did almost cause me to wreck going up hill during winter weather. They replaced front differential engagement actuator. All these things in my mind should not have happened at these mileages. The 4-wheel drive quit @ 80,000 miles. All these issues can create safe driving issues for the consumer especially someone who pays over $30,000 for a vehicle when it's new. Let me add now that the latest expensive repair to add to my list is the fan clutch assembly on my engine cooling fan system $573. 00 -- also found many gm owners of bravada, rainers, envoys & Trailblazers experiencing this items failure too.
Air conditioner controller will not work on the #1 setting.

I backed of the garage and heard a loud noise. As I pulled forward the truck moved very slowly for how far the gas pedal was pushed. I went to go in reverse again but the truck would not go into reverse and could hear a loud whining from the motor. I this just happened to day but I figure it's the transmission. Also, when I bought the truck I had problems with the temp. Sensor and the air conditioning the dealer took care of the problem with the air but the outside temp. Sensor is still broke. I don't know which is worse the failure of the transmission or, seeing all the like complaints on this site with no action.
Fan clutch has/is failing. Hangs and doesn't always release even if vehicle has been sitting for days. No 'logic' as to when it chooses to disengage. No engine fault light. Is as likely to be fully engaged on a cold morning as a hot day. Affects mileage and by inference emissions. This is a chronic Trailblazer problem per my mechanic and web complaint evidence.
I have had my water pump replaced twice in that last 1. 5 years. The first time was covered under warranty but the next time about 10 month the dealership claim it didn't work again. Just today 12/12 I went to drive to work after letting my car warm up for 5 minutes I decided to turn the heat on and nothing came out now I have to call and see if anyone can look my auto. Worse brand new auto that I have had.
While driving to lax airport after rounding curve to get off on airport ramp, tranmission failed. Vehicle would not move. Local airport police assisted to get me towed ($45) to police lot. Notified onstar and was towed to closest Chevrolet dealer, albertson Oldsmobile Chevrolet in culver city, California. After three days the dealer had not even looked at the vehicle. I then ha car towed to aamco transmission in orange California where after less than 24 hours I was informed transmission was completely burned up. A pump had failed and the inside of the transmisson assembly was filled with metal shavings. In October of 2003 the transmission had failed and the car had to be towed to gateway Chevrolet in la mirada, California. Car was repaired. I have also had many other problems with this vehicle including brake lights, windshield wipers, heating & air conditioning system.
While driving appox 50 mph, got hung in traffic. All of the sudden my engine coolant hot warning lamp came on. I pulled off and had to call my father to come get me. He added a small amount of water to the system. The car drove fine for the next 10 miles. After driving again for about 30 miles, it began to over heat again. Pulled off and let it set for about 30 minutes, once again added a small amount of water. Drove fine for the next couple of days. My husband and brother flushed the cooling system and added dex-cool. Drove fine for a day or so when it began overheating again. Parked the car until the following weekend when my husband flushed the cooling system again. Ran fine again for a couple of days. All of the sudden it started overheating again when I noticed that it occured during "stop & go" traffic, but when moving, the car would cool back down. My husband then replaced the clutch fan. Worked fine for one day when it bagan overheating again. Took the car last week to a dealer where they checked the code and it was wrong, so they entered the correct code. Worked fine for one day when it started overheating again. Don't know what it wrong with this thing!!!.
I have a 2002 chevy Trailblazer. In recent months it has suddenly stalled numerous times, on street driving at approximately 30 mph, and at highway driving at about 65 mph. During the highway stall the car lost power steering and braking control and was fortunately steered off to the side of the road, with great physical effort since the power steering was lost. The stall causes an abrupt stop of the car without warning. I have had the car in for testing and repair at romano cheverolet in syracuse, NY as well as curry cheverolet in scarsdale, NY. Neither shop has been able to diagnose or repair the problem since the car's computer is not registering the stalls. They replaced the fuel filter several weeks ago but the car suddenly stalled on me in normal street driving at 30 mph a few days later. I have spoken to cheverolet customer service and they say they are "investigating" the problem. I have sent copies of NHTSA service bulletins on this car to curry cheverolet but they claim they are not applicable. The service bulletins clearly state that there are problems with stalling due to an engine and engine cooling problem, but curry cheverolet claims that my engine is fine and that the NHTSA service bulletins do not apply to my car. However, they can't fix it. I have suggested to curry cehverolet that the car computer is defective and needs repair or replacement since it has not registered the numerous stalls. However, they claim that the computer is fine, even though it is not registering the stalls and what they are caused by. The people I have spoken to at curry cheverolet are the dealership manager, mr. Conte, and the repair shop manager, dennis. I have spoken to duane cox at cheverolet customer service, and his manager ms. Patricia frey. Mr. Cox's phone number is 866-952-4368, extension 57020. Ms. Frey said I could reach her via mr. Cox, her assistant. The cheverolet customer service reference number for my car 1-219-824-950.
Transmission went out couldn't drive-repaired/ rear window won't roll-up/seatbelt won't retract, later fixed, but still won't work on occasion/ brake lights have gone out 5+ times repaired still not operational/ water pump exploded/rear window won't lock first try/ check engine llight stays on.
I bought a 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer lt new about 10 months ago the truck has been in for service many times for different things as for seatbelt looking up and wont release, brake lights failing, derectionals that blowout every few days,radio/cd player wasnt working, leakage of water everytime it rained etc etc. . Anyways I just took it back on 6-9-03 for seatbelt to be done again and for the derectional that failed again and also to have truck inspected I picked it up later that day and found that the inspection sticker had a wrong VIN # on it and that other work was done I left there knowing they said they dont know why the light in derectional keeps failing but they did change the bulbs { this is everytime I bring it this is all they do to fix it} on 6-10-03 the derectional wasnt working again my husband changed the light bulb this time due to the fact it takes me almost 40 mins to get to dealership . . . . . I will be going to the dealership to ask for a copy of the history on truck and will be getting a lawyer involved and also contact the dealers commintion and channel 12 on this matter . . . . . I payed almost 30,000 for a truck that is not worth it and I am a very unhappy costumer . .
Air/heat vents have a really bad odor. The dealer has cleaned and spray something in them and suggested I do the same. I have done so. This causes a severe smell in the vehicle for a couple of days that makes occupants sick, then the smell will disappear completely for a couple of weeks then return. The dealer says that it is some type of mold or mildew in the vents. This has been happening for several months.
