5 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2010 Dodge Caravan

Failure Date: 07/14/2010

I rented a Dodge grand Caravan from national car rental at the charleston, SC airport on July 14, 2010. That evening the van slipped into reverse when I was exiting the vehicle. It knocked me down and ran over my left leg. I suffered scrapes and bruises all over my body and a bone contusion on my left knee and am now recovering. The safety of the dash mounted gear shift in this vehicle should be examined by the manufacturer. It should also be questioned by any other vehicle operator or provider.

6 Automatic Transmission problem of the 1999 Dodge Caravan

Failure Date: 07/09/2010

Driving 20 miles an hour under normal conditions. My transmission fell apart in my 1999 Dodge grand Caravan se 3. 3 automatic transmission. There is a pin inside the transmission that simply breaks apart. You receive no warning of the defect. When this happens your vehicle seizes and stops. I was lucky I was close to home. When the pin breaks it destroys the case as well. In researching this defect I found out it also happens in 1999,2000, and 2001 Dodge Caravans, Plymouth voyager and Chrysler town and country vans. This breakage can occur at any speed. It seems to happen at around 100,000 miles. Again in my research came across a person who replaced the transmission 5 times in one year and another who was going 60 miles an hour when it happened luckily they gained control of the vehicle and no one was hurt. There are still a great many of these vehicles on the road and present a danger to all occupants and even those who are next to them on the road when all systems shut down. You must purchase an after market built case that stabilizes the pin and helps prevent the metal fatigue or the problem will continue to happen. Chrysler needs to offer some assistance to owners as this is 2000. 00 or more repair. They do not acknowledge the problem and it seems to be very common.

8 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2008 Dodge Caravan

Failure Date: 02/26/2010

When coming down an incline with the cruise control set, the motor begins to rev accessively within rpm redline and the speed of the vehicle starts to drop. This problem can only be corrected by pulling off the road and turning the vehicle off. The vehicle has been to two different dealerships, and the problem was reported to the better business bureau. People who work at the dealership have commented that they have the same problem with their 2008 Dodge Caravan as well, but Dodge has said it is acceptable.

9 Automatic Transmission problem of the 1998 Dodge Caravan

Failure Date: 01/01/2010

I found out that the 1998 Dodge Caravan that I purchased has two design flaws. One is that the vehicle does not have brake-shift interlock. The other is that the vehicle is equipped with Chrysler gen3 seat belts that, in some vehicles, have unlatched while people were driving. I believe that the government should order a recall of the 1998 Caravan for both of these important safety issues.

While driving about 45mph I heard a loud thump. A few moments later the van stopped pulling itself. I took it to a shop and they said that a pin in the transmission had broke and tore up the housing of transmission causing all of the fluid to pour out onto the road. No one was hurt but I was told that it was a common problem and think that if it is common Dodge should help pay for some of the damage.

Also, the brakes will not release while the brake pedal is depressed, this occurs every time, and causes the rims to get hot, causing three blowouts on the front end. 26 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2002 Dodge Caravan

Failure Date: 08/01/2004

When driving the vehicle through varying speeds the vehicle shifts improperly. Sometimes it is an extremely hard shift between second and third gear at speeds of 20-30 mph where the vehicle will pull back and then lurch forward and a loud thud occurs. It shifts improperly with the same actions when it shifts down into first gear when attempting to stop. It also shifts erratically between 3rd and 4th gear on the expressway at speeds of 55-65 mph. However these issues are not consistent and the problem doesn't occur every time the vehicle shifts in to these gears. The first time the vehicle was taken into service they identified the problem as a bad transmission program. However, after they claimed to have "fixed" the issues, my vehicle' s transmission problems worsened instead of improving. Since then the vehicle has been in for service two more times where the Dodge mechanic said they cannot duplicate the problem I am having, and refused to fix my vehicle. They will only drive it around the block and if it doesn't act up they send it home and say there is no problem.

I bought a used 1999 Dodge grand Caravan se in 2002 with 28000 miles. The original mfg warranty had expired so we bought extended warranty. From the first week this car gave us trouble ending with a major accident due to gear shift. On the day of the accident while driving the car the gear shifted on its own from drive to lower gear. 5 min later the car when parked on my driveway moved from park to reverse on its own. Since I was out of the car I was run over by the car causing severe injuries but I was lucky that I did not die. The fatality rate is over 50% in such accident but I escaped with rib fractures, internal blood loss and extensive bruising.

30 Automatic Transmission problem of the 1996 Dodge Caravan

Failure Date: 06/20/2004

As a precaution to other drivers. My 1996 Dodge Caravan 125000 miles, upon leaving a parking lot after a highway speed and city speed trip the vehicle would not move forward. A police officer waved me to stop. Upon inspection of the passenger front tire we found the outer tie rod joint broke seperating at the ball socket causing the wheel to not move with the steering. By the grace of god it did not happen on the way with my family aboard. We were able the change the tie outer tie rod so we could return home. The other driver side outer tie rod was replaced the next day as a precaution. Is there a recall about these tie rods? the replacement part from a aftermarket parts store appear heavy duty compared to the originals. The original part showed wear on the ball aswell as the socket. The repacement part has a grease fitting to lube the joint and the original does not. Please contact me via e-mail if a recall exist or with questions. Please inform the public to have these parts inspected before a problems occurs for them. Thank you for listening and best regards /david derouen.

33 Automatic Transmission problem of the 1998 Dodge Caravan

Failure Date: 03/30/2004

I started out in the morning to take my son to school, and we had to make a stop at the grocery store. When I got to the stop sign to turn into the grocery store I heard this clanking sound. The car had stopped and would not move. I had my car towed to a repair shop, and they said my transmission broke into pieces and fell out from under the van. He could not understand why this happened being that I only had 67,000 miles on the van. He could not fix it so I had to get a new one from the manufacturer. The whole process cost me $2400. 00 (outrageous). Before this incident happened there was leaking coming from under the van. With all the complaints and problems with the transmission I cannot believe Dodge/Chrysler has not done something about this. They should be held accountable.
