Last week my wife was coming home from work when she thought she ran over something. She said that the steering wheel shuttered and it scared her a lot. I'm just thankful she was not on the interstate when that happened because it could have put her life, as well as others, in danger. She was turning a corner after the light changed for left hand turns as was only traveling around 25-30 mph. When she looked she did not see anything in the road. The Caravan suddenly stopped. She got off the road. She was able to restart the car and make it home, about 5 miles. I had the Caravan towed to a transmission repair shop. They told me that this problem is very common with Dodge Caravan's with an engine rating of 3. 1 to 3. 8 litter and the 41te transmission. I need the car so I had it fixed for $2,265. F Dodge (Chrysler) knows about this problem, why is it still happening to owners of this vehicle?.
My transmission broke down on a highway no warning and I almost got kill, speeding cars behind me. My old trans in a 92 Dodge Caravan broke down 3 times and it cost me 9,000 and now my 96 Dodge Caravan the trans broke and I do nt want to pay thousands of dollars so I am planning to sew Dodge for not warning on the trans problem and the new models re not better then the old, and I have proof that self destruct, in bad weathers or out of no where.

I consider ourselves fortunate after scouring thru the numerous customer complaints on the 1997 Dodge Caravan. We bought the vehicle used in 1999 with 23,000 miles on it. It was mainly used to transport myself and our three children all under the age of 6 at the time, but now my husband drives it back and forth to work. We to have had the intermitent ghost wipers ever since purchasing the vehichle and were constantly told by the dealer that nothing was wrong or could be found to be wrong. We have within the last six months replaced the drive belt, the water pump, & timing belt due to routine maintenance. However, the transmission at 123,000 miles just went out on my husband while he was driving down the road. We are told that it will cost $1,500 to fix. We have chosen to get it fixed, but at the time of that decision did not realize the number of complaints about the Chrysler transmissions. This is definitely a safety issue, as the van left my husband stranded in the middle of an intersection with oncoming traffic. Will it take someone getting killed before Chrysler is held responsible for these defects? I do not like the fact that my husband will be driving this vehichle again, once the tramission is repaired. As I stated above I consider ourselves one of the fortunate ones to not have experienced so many problems as other owners have had with their vehichles, but when will the time come to hold Chrysler responsible for their shody workmanship? I can honestly say this is the first and will be the last Chrysler car I ever own. My other car is a Ford f-150, which I am very proud to drive!.

While shifting gears transmission down shifted on its own. Driver took vehicle to the dealer for analysis, and mechanic replaced speed sensor.
While driving at 15 mph and turning to the left, the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was towed to the dealer. The technician stated that the automatic transmission needed to be replaced. The consumer wanted to know what the criteria was for issuing a recall.
1998 Dodge grand Caravan se id#1b4gp44gowb500517 with under 100,000 miles ended the life of the transmission with a loud metalic clunk.
Computer controlled transmission in 2000 Dodge Caravan. This transmission has twice been disconnected from the engine by the computer in traffic. The second time I was in heavy traffic on the middle lane of interstate 20 at weatherford, TX. And had to coast over to the emergency lane. The Dodge dealer in weatherford who fixed the transmission told me that there was nothing actually wrong with the transmission, but that the computer disconnected the transmission from the engine because of low pressure in the transmission system to keep the engine from tearing the transmission apart. My problem with that kind of scenario is this: what this should happen when I was passing a vehicle on a two lane high way with on coming traffic at what would have been a safe distance away but all at once I find I am coasting in the wrong lane with traffic coming at me head on?.
At 51,000 miles in a three year old Caravan the transmission dropped out and needed a $2300 repair. The dealer told me gleefully my warranty was expired, there was no extended warranty on the transmission and there was nothing they could or would do.
At 72,000 miles my 1999 Dodge Caravan needs a new transmission due to a pinion in the pinion shaft coming loose and tearing through the transmission casing. Over $2400 worth of work was required. No injuries, but I lost control when incident occurred and was able to drift to the grassy edge of a rural road.
Took my car in for a transmission to be serviced, picked my car up a hour later. He transmission locked on me. I had my vehicle towed to another shop. The total ost of repairs was $1400. 00.
While driving the car, the transmission started to go in neutral and then to drive.

I have a 1998 Dodge Caravan with a transmission problem at 65,000 miles with a cost of repair at $2140. 00, the dealer telling me I have a 15% off total cost to fix. An actual replacement is a $2600. 00, a rebuilt at the cost of 2,140. 00. A complaint has been made with Chrysler, with no response from them as yet. The dealer said the would contact the zone mgr, but not available for me for at least a week. When I asked why this would happen, the dealer did reply, well, the van is 5 years old. Meaning? a disposable van at 5 years or 50,000 which ever comes first. Ridiculous!.
Moving with the military from mo to nv. Van is 35 months old but 10000 miles outside warranty (46k). Check trans fluid every day prior to driving. Fluid was full in denver. Arrived in st. George, ut and transmission stopped going in reverse. Took it to the dealer. Dealer charged $80 to assess the problem. Stated transmission needed overhaul. Both dealer and Chrysler corp told us to drive to las vegas, our destination. Chrysler said they would assist with the repair. Upon arrival took it to the dealer. Dealer told Chrysler that vehicle had no trans fluid and should not be a good faith repair. 1) transmission should not fail at 46000 when properly serviced. 2) st. George was wrong for telling us to drive 120 miles in 107 without transmission fluid. 3) or the dealer is lying about the fluid level to force us to pay. Chryler states they cannot say one dealer or the other is wrong so they refuse to assist further. Additionally, I have been told that I cannot talk to anyone higher in the company than the customer service agents at Chrysler.
While driving at 40/50 mph a pin from the automatic transmission flew off and blew the transmission. Engine shut off, and driver was unable to change gears.
The cylinoid pack in the transmission had to be replaced. The vehicle was taken to the dealer four times for problems with the transmission.
The vehicle will not go higher than 30 mph, anything over may destroy the engine. Tvehicle is sticking in second gear.
Vehicle slams into second gear while driving at any speed causing car to nose dive and almost causing it to be rear ended. Incident occurred 10/15/02, 10/26/02, 11/23/02 and 04/29/03. Vehicle is currently at dealer after having been "fixed" three times before this.

Failure of transmission.
Wife was loading grand kids into minivan, grandson crawled across drivers seat and grabbed the shifting lever, which the caused van to go into reverse and back up into step wall, we realized you do not have to put foot your on the brake to shift into gear when engine is running.
The transmission locked up, and caused the rear tires to lock up, which made it difficult to control the vehicle.
Sometimes after my 2000 Caravan has sat overnight, it will not go in reverse to back out of the garage. The parking brake will be off and the gear shift will be in reverse but the van won't move. Only after repeated attempts at pushing down on the accelerator will the gear pop out and the van finally go into reverse. The van has 35000 + miles and is approaching the end of the warranty. The dealer can not find the problem. What makes this worse is that the very same thing happened after we bought the van new and after three failed attempts by the dealer to figure it out, they put in a new transmission -- after only 900 miles!.
Intermittently when the vehicle was in the reverse with the gear and gas pedal depressed, the vehicle didn't accelerate or when it was in the drive gear and gas pedal was depressed, the vehicle would go into reverse. This problem occurred three times a week when the vehicle was in first gear. The engine revved, but the vehicle didn't move. The consumer's foot was on the gas, and had no idea the vehicle would move. The vehicle had been back to the dealer on three occasions; the first time for warranty, the second time the vehicle was involved in an accident, and the third time the dealer wasn't successful with finding the problem. The consumer discovered Ford had problems with their transmissions.
1997 Dodge Caravan transmission has been replaced three times. When the transmission pan was removed, the mechanic found metal contamination and broken parts.
We bought the Dodge Caravan se in 1998. Last year, when the vehicle was around 30,000 miles, the car was starting to have problem on shifting. It sometimes locked on the 2nd gear and wouldnã‚t go faster. After we turned off the engine and restarted, it was all ok again. On Feb 21st, 2003 while we were driving on the highway, the transmission gave up and broke. The whole family was stranded, as the vehicle wouldnã‚t move at all. The vehicle had only 42,000 miles on it and only 6000 miles after the warranty expired. I therefore contacted the Chrysler support. They replied plainly that it is my responsibility because it has passed the warranty. I then purchased a remanufactured transmission from phoenix remanufactured transmission in arizona and had kuanã‚s auto repair, an ase certified repair shop in st. Paul, fix it. I went on and conduct an extended research on chryslerã‚s transmission. There has to be something wrong if a brand new transmission would broke in 42000 miles. The result of the research is astounding: Chrysler had this type of the transmission since 1988 and it is a design flaw in the transmission. The worst part is, Chrysler knew about it since beginning and did nothing about it. Thousands of people have the same problem with this type of transmission (a604 41te) on Dodge, Plymouth, Chrysler brands of Mini vans. Chryslerã‚s ignorance to the problem continues to jeopardize the safety of thousands of families with this defected transmission on their Mini vans. A Mini van is a family car and thousands of mothers and children depend on it. It is time for Chrysler to put the safety and quality on their priority and pay for the cost to fix those faulty transmissions.
The transmission locked into second gear without warning.
While driving, the vehicle stalled out. The dealership indicated that this was caused by a pin in the automatic transmission which was coming a loose, and had blown a hole in the transmission. Ph scc.
My 2001 Dodge Caravan se has transmission problems at 35,000 miles. The van stop on the freeway for no reason at all. The dealer fix it and 2 weeks after that the car will not shift form 2nd gear. And the gauges didn't work at all. The engine light came on. This is my 2nd Dodge Caravan minivan and the last one . I'll buy a Honda for now on when I pay or nearly pay this one. I'm a Dodge man , I have 2002 pt cruiser that I had a recall already. These are the last american made car I'll purchase. I had purchase 7 new vehicles in the past 10 years(3 Dodge,1 gm, 2 hondas and 1 Mazda) I was very satisfied within all the japanese cars but not with the american cars. There are junk!!!!.
1999 Dodge Caravan has two baseball size holes in casing of transmission after bringing down to ? sound of transmission and was told it was fine by dealers , I feel as though this is a defect in transmission. I would like a transmisson replaced due to only having for 11/2 yrs and owe 10. 000. 00 still on loan.
The transmission on my 1996 Dodge Caravan has failed again for the third time. It was replaced once in 1997 at 7,000 miles by Chrysler. It was reconditioned in 2000 at 56,000 miles by Chrysler. The most recent failure at 81,000 miles in December of 2002. Chrysler refuses to acknowledge a problem with the transmission and refuses to perform any "good will" repairs.
This is the third Dodge I've owned that the transmisson has failed. I know this has been problem but I thought it had been corrected but I guess it hasn't. I'm having it repaired by an independent garage and would like for Dodge to pay for it. Dt.
While driving approximately 30mph on highway the transmission shifted itself into neutral without warning. Dealer advised that the transmission "blew up". Ts.
