The contact owns a 2007 Dodge Caravan which was purchased on December 28, 2006. While approaching a stop sign she noticed that the vehicle began to idle excessively. The vehicle was taken to her independent mechanic where she had a transmission flush performed. After the transmission was flushed, the vehicle would not proceed beyond 40 mph while driving. The vehicle was taken back to the mechanic where they performed a diagnostic test and found that the transmission was failing. The mechanic also presented a technical service bulletin for the same failures and recommended taking the vehicle to the dealer to have the transmission replaced. The current and failure mileages were under 48,151.

The contact owns a 1997 Dodge Caravan. Two weeks after the vehicle was purchased, the check engine light illuminated. The dealer stated that there was nothing wrong with the vehicle. Two weeks later, the transmission failed and the vehicle was towed to the dealer. They took three weeks to repair the vehicle and, before the contact could pay for the repairs, the new transmission failed. The dealer informed her that she would have to pay for any new repairs made to the vehicle at the cost of $900. While the vehicle was at the dealer for three weeks, someone in the service center caused the front windshield to crack. The mileage information and VIN were unknown.

My transmission failed thanksgiving day 2006. Van was parked on hill. I placed it in drive and it rolled backwards down the hill. Was able to cautiously drive it to transmission shop. They had to rebuild the unit. The check engine light never came on. After picking it up I had to take it back to the shop because it wouldn't go out of first gear. Shop stated it was due to a sensor problem. A couple of month's later it did the same first gear. Shop replaced the sensor again. Luckily the rebuilt transmission was still under warranty. Dodge only warrants the powertrain to the original purchaser. I purchased it used in 2003.

I purchased my 2002 Dodge Caravan new. It has had several problems in the four years that I have owned it. Aside from all of the recall work, my transmission has failed twice now. The first time it failed was two months ago, the mechanic said it was a sensor problem and that it was fixed. It went out again last night while driving. Now they want to charge me another deductible to "fix" it again. My air conditioner has not worked properly in over a year, water leaks down on the passenger side floor, and cold air only comes out of the passenger side vents, the driver side vents blow out hot air. My driver side window has not worked in over a year, the interior lights go on and off at random, and the arm rest on the passenger side front seat just snapped off. The dealer is not very helpful at all.

The vehicle received regular and routine maintenance. The road conditions were clear with no road hazards or debris. The vehicle was towed to the contacts residence. The dealer determined the transmission pin fell out without inspecting the vehicle.

With 79,000 miles the transmission went into safe mode and locked in 2nd gear. Repair shop hooked vehicle up to diagnostics and vehicle will need a transmission rebuild. Vehicle has a history of transmission leaks and transmission lines letting go dating back to first year of ownership. A transmission service (at several hundred dollars) was completed in February at 74,000 miles. Owned 96 Caravan -transmission failed at 51,000 miles. Was assured by salesperson and service manager that transmission on 2000 was a complete redesign or I would not have purchased a second Caravan.
Transmission failure at 96,000.

I own a 1998 v6 Dodge Caravan. My wife was traveling on the interstate and the transmission literally blew apart. It was not merely a transmission failure, but the transmission case was destroyed along with the transmission. I have checked the transmission monthly since I purchased the van in 1999, and I have properly maintained and changed the fluid. The damage to my vehicle was $2,511. 00.

While driving 55 mph, the transmission failed without warning. Please provide additional information.
Transmission failed at 39,000 miles.
Transmission failed at 63,000 on the highway, on a cold day, 90 miles from home when I had my children, ages 2 and 5 in the van. This is supposed to be a family vehicle! it should be reliable and safe. I've always had toyotas and hondas and put 200,000 miles on them with no transmission failure. The public is being dumped by daimler Chrysler into thinking that replacing transmissions is a normal part of vehicle ownership. I just had to spend $2800 to fix a vehicle that is worth about $7000. I've recently learned that many, many people have had this same problem and that Caravans are notorious for bad transmissions and motor failure in under 100,000 miles. If they are going to market family vehicles they should be safe and reliable!.
While driving transmission failed, causing consumer to pull off the highway. Driver had vehicle towed to the dealer.

While driving at 60 mph transmission failed without warning.
I have a 1998 Dodge Caravan sport with 57000 miles. Today 7/2/03 the transmission failed, it appears that the casting cracked due to an internal failure. I know of two other owners of the same year van that had the same problem. I contacted the Chrysler district office and was told I was out of luck. .
Transmission failure at 60,400 miles that resulted in having to replace the transmission.
Transmission failure at 115,000 miles.
The transmission failed while driving.
The mechanic informed the consumer, the transmission failed.
Complete transmission failure on a 1999 Dodge ge and Caravan VIN# [xxx] at 67,723 miles. No help from Chrysler on this problem, because of high mileage. Transmissions should not fail this soon. We had a transmission failure on another grand Caravan with VIN# [xxx] that had 37,491 miles on it that was mostly covered by them. These vehicles appear to have defects and should be covered by Chrysler and built to last. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
Automatic transmission failure. Extent of rebuild/repairs being assessed by benchmark transmission, wilmington DE. Probable failure of shift governor due to internal failure of part/parts was preliminary diagnosis of brandywine Chrysler, wilmington DE and benchmark transmission, wilmington DE. Preliminary estimate of rebuild is $1400, but dependent on extent of internal damage. Benchmark reported no electronic failure or cause. Mileage is 56,111. Vehicle purchased new in July 1998 and still owned by original owner.
I have had 4 complete transmission failures with my 2000 Caravan: 2 ofwhich required a complete rebuild and 2 of which required entirely new units (transmissions) and new cv axles as a result of the transmission locking up. The worse of the 4 times was on thanksgiving 2002, less than 2 weeks after a factory rebuild where the front wheels locked up while on the interstate. 3 of 4 repairs were completed at a Chrysler/Dodge dealership. The 4th and so far final repair was completed at a local transmission shop and it has lasted the longest, over 22,000 miles. After looking on the internet, there are so many complaints about Caravan transmissions. I really feel that this warrants a defect investigation. Please help all of us people who have dumped $30,000 into junk. This is not an isolated incident. I have much more specifics I would like to provide, but this form is limited to 2000 characters. . . . My original submission contained 3,493 characters so it has been trunkated to fit in the space allotted.
Consumer stated the transmission failed, the manufacturer offered to reimburse consumer 50% of the cost of the repair. Ts.
Consumer stated the transmission failed. Ts.
Transmission failed at 39,000 miles. Seems to be manufacturer's defect. Required a "soft overhaul" because it would not shift into higher gears. Dealership repaired clutch pack seals that were not holding pressure. I feel that a transmission should last more than 39,000 miles. This is the second Dodge I have owned with the same problem - seems to be a transmission defect. Dealer repaired under extended warranty so I did incur out of pocket expenses. Subsequently traded in the Caravan and lost a refund of $700 on my extended warranty due to the transmission repairs, so this repair did cost me $800. Know two other people with recently (this past week) failed Dodge Caravan transmissions.
